He already lost his good name. Can he afford to lose his heart as well?
Silas Yorke is in hiding. After being falsely accused of murder by one of the most powerful peers in England, he has no other choice. But he itches for freedom. Concealment in the countryside was difficult enough, but to clear his name, he must assume a new identity and go to London. There, he courts real danger—the last thing on his mind is courting women.
Until he meets Miss Easton.
Arabella Easton has been raised with wealth and position—and no opportunity to make choices of her own. When her father allows her to join her cousin in London, she hopes to make the most of her opportunity. Her father might intend for her to make a match, but Arabella wishes to experience life rather than cede her freedom to another man.
Yet, she is drawn almost immediately to the mysterious gentleman she meets at a masquerade. Being with him is exhilarating in ways she has never known. But is he the man he says he is, or is their romance doomed from the start?
A Reckless Courtship is the third in a series of Regency romances, full of banter, a touch of suspense, and all the swoon without the steam.
Silas is in hiding. He has to clear his name and is in absolutely no position to pursue a courtship. But—the heart wants what it wants.
The author performs some fairly impressive logical acrobatics in this book, which I can’t really get into because of spoilers. You’ll just have to take my word for it: big parts of this story make very little sense.
However! Who cares. Silas and Arabella were cute together, and FINALLY, there was a long-overdue comeuppance for the villain. I was ready for blood, but given the circumstances, the compromise will do.
I can’t wait for Freddie’s book!

So. Are we going to talk about those huge plot holes? Why would we? Who cares about logic when there’s cuteness?
This is the third book in the series. It definitely works as a standalone but I recommend reading them in order. I was excited to finally read Silas’s story. I loved that the hidden identity trope was included. I loved Arabella and Silas together. I especially loved how they met and how she couldn’t decide whether to fully trust him or not. Silas’s brothers and Aunt are in this story as well and I love all the bantering between them all. The aunt cracks me up. Arabella is in a bad spot and I felt bad for her when she learns some upsetting news about her father. Overall, I loved this story and I definitely recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.75
“May a man not inquire about a young woman without all sorts of assumptions being made?” “No,” Aunt Eugenia said. “He may not.”
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
This is the third book in the A Chronicle of Misadventures series. Technically it contains a standalone story, but this series is best read in order. There are events that take place throughout books 1 and 2 that heavily impact the story of this third book.
I was enjoying the beginning of the book, especially the meeting of Arabella and Silas, but then things got really good for the last 2/3rds of the story. This was very captivating and made me not want to stop reading at bedtime.
There is both humor and some light suspense in the story. I highly recommend this series. Martha Keyes and her Regency books are always a favorite and must read for me. This one was no exception!
I did receive an advanced digital copy of this book from the author. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
I really enjoy Martha Keyes as a writer. She has a true talent of bringing characters and situations to life. This book was no different. The twist that came about halfway through was something I did not expect, nor could I figure out how the hurdle could be surmounted! Overall, I really enjoyed this book, but would have loved for relationship building between the characters. it felt like there hadn't been quite enough interactions to warrant the level of love, trust, and respect. I'm still excited to continue reading the series as I've really enjoyed it!
It was good until the end when Silas becomes all self sacrificing as soon as he finally got what he wanted/needed.
It was interesting to me that the villain was initially more colorful with a soft spot for his daughters that might have actually been twisted by fear into the root of his misdeeds. But by the end, he had been pretty flattened with all of that dismissed and a simple cause of greed at the culprit. I was disappointed.
Honestly I commiserated with Frederick - his frustration over someone he loved deeply being that reckless with his life. 😔 Silas was lucky drayton didn’t enquire more closely about his daughter’s social life. And that people didn’t start noticing and talking about this Hayes - with his close association to the hitherto unknown Miss Easton - that connection alone would have garnered attention I think. Or the jumping onto the barge perhaps.

I was excited to get Silas’ story after the first two books & it did not disappoint. After being on the run & in hiding for two years for a murder he did not commit, Silas re-enters society under an alias to try and clear his name. Of course, falling in love was not in the plan! I adored Arabella & Silas with all their teasing banter, sweetness, & forbidden romance goodness! And I love the entire Yorke family.
A Reckless Courtship is the third book in A Chronicle of Misadventures series. While you may be able to enjoy this one as a standalone, I think this is one that is going to be best read in order. We have gotten to know a little bit of Silas's story throughout the series and having that history will only make his book all the more satisfying.
Regency romance is admittedly very hit and miss for me... I enjoy them on occasion, but it's honestly not a genre that I tend to gravitate towards. But from the moment I read the first book in this series, I was absolutely hooked... and one of the things that definitely drew me in was Silas's character. Having gotten glimpses of his story in the background of both previous books, I was beyond excited for him to finally get his own book... and it absolutely did not disappoint! The last thing he is looking for when he returns to try to clear his name from a false murder accusation is to fall in love... but the connection with Arabella is undeniable. From their initial awkward meeting to a twist that most certainly complicated everything, these two absolutely drew me in and kept me wanting to see how everything would play out. With a hint of suspense, this was a fantastic read that I absolutely couldn't get enough of! If you love Regency romance, this is definitely one to add to your TBR.
A Reckless Courtship is a closed-door romance with kisses only and no language.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.
Silas’ story was so satisfying. Faced with the seemingly impossible task of clearing his name on false murder charges, he returns to London. While there, he finds opportunities to get out into society to find and speak to those who can help him without exposing his identity to the people in general.
He doesn’t expect to meet someone and fall in love. Unfortunately, he can’t tell her his real identity. How will she react when she finds out he’s been lying about who he really is? He’s really in a tough spot. Then, as if things couldn’t get any worse, there’s a big plot twist! This kept me turning pages. I had to know how his problems could ever be resolved.
I don’t know how Martha can think up such great plots and then she expertly weaves the story in a way that we can’t put it down.
If you like stories of redemption, fake identities, mystery and sweet romance you’ll love this one! Such an enthralling tale!
I have been anxiously awaiting Silas’ story since book one in this series and it did not disappoint! I read this one in 24 hours, couldn’t put it down! I would definitely recommend it!
Silas has been in hiding for 2 years after being framed for murder. But he is back in London using a false name trying to find evidence to support his innocence. But what he doesn’t plan on is meeting Arabella Easton one night at a masquerade. No matter how many times he tells himself to focus on his reason for going to London, he can’t seem to help himself when he is around her.
“When I am with you, I do a great many things I should not.” His gaze fixed on hers. “And yet far fewer than I wish to.”
Things I loved Teasing banter The butterfly bracelet Mustache 👨🏻 Aunt Eugenia The orangery 🍊 Freddie literally being his brother’s keeper
Speaking of Freddie can’t wait to get his story next!
Wow, so good! I did not like the 1st book and did not intend on continuing with the series. This 3rd book was just released, however, and I decided Silas’ story sounded just intriguing enough to give it a try… and I’m so glad I did. This book is excellent! I loved both MCs and their romance, which is wrapped in mystery, suspense, and danger. It seemed impossible that their relationship would work out, but Keyes pulled it off beautifully.
Thankfully, this book can be read as a standalone, with the loss of only a bit of context in Silas’ backstory. Highly recommended!
Content: There is no foul language, sex, or violence. The romance is limited to a couple mildly descriptive kisses. There is no real mention of faith or God.
I really enjoyed reading this forbidden romance. I can usually see plot twists coming, but I did not anticipate the major plot twist for this story! the book is sweet and clean and romantic, and I liked the resolution.
Gobble gobble gobble. I ate this up faster than a nerd cluster rope purchased at Blockbuster after being told I have to share with my sister. Sorry, not a crumb left behind.
Romantic, Suspenseful, and Utterly delightful. I was charmed by Silas in “Secrets of a Duke.” Silas’ endearing and fun-filled personality, even while he was enduring such hardships, simply stole my heart — and Arabella was obviously his perfect match, in spite of the major obstacles to be overcome, some of which are not revealed till later in the story. Highly recommend.
I liked Silas’ story better than William’s- but not as much as Anthony’s. I will admit that I never saw the twist coming. That was a happy surprise! What was not a happy surprise was that Silas really didn’t do anything to clear his own name. He just had the right connections and they did the work for him. Lame. Plus, I couldn’t read one more word about his mustache 🙄.

Another beautiful story in this A Chronicle of Misadventures Series. These books are really best read in order as the characters and stories continue from book to book. The previous books have touched on the Yorke brother who was accused of murder. Silas had to flee to France to save himself from being arrested and tried for murder. His family at first believed the story but his brother Anthony was out to prove his innocence. Silas had a difficult time trying to support himself in France and he had a bad case of consumption. After returning to his home area in book 2, he stayed in hiding on the family estate. Now in this book Silas is out to prove his innocence and to find information that will show that Lord Drayton actually committed the murder.
Silas has come to London under an assumed name and he has changed his appearance. He knows that he has to be careful to keep his identity hidden. So when there is a masquerade he is able to go about trying to find Sir Walter Bence, who had done business in the past with Drayton. Instead he comes upon a woman who is being accosted by two men and pretends to be there for her. He has no idea who she is, but he will meet her again because one of the men he is staying with is related to her.
Miss Arabella Easton has never been away from her home due to a very protective father. Her and her sisters have been raised with wealth and position but no one even knows about them. Her father has kept them hidden. When he finally agrees to allow her to go to London for a short visit, she will stay with her aunt and cousin. She wants to experience as much as she can before her father will make her return to their home. The masquerade at Vauxhall was everything she imagined but when she lost her cousin in the crowd, she was accosted by some drunk men and a man stepped in to save her. She never got his name but she really wanted to see him again.
Silas never planned on a courtship while his name was tainted. He had nothing to offer a woman until his name was cleared but he could not seem to stay away from Miss Easton. Arabella also feels drawn to Silas even though she knows him as John Hayes. Her father is pushing her to make a betrothal with another man. Time is running out for Silas and Arabella to be together. Will he be able to prove his innocence and have a future with Arabella or will her father force her to agree to his plans for her.
This story has lots of drama and unexpected things are revealed. I am looking forward to the next story with the last brother Frederick.
I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.
A charmingly suspenseful Regency romance brimming with slow-burn tension, elegant mystery, and heartfelt character growth.
📚 Plot Snapshot Falsely accused of murder, Silas Yorke—an earl stripped of his good name—goes into hiding in London to uncover the truth. At a masked ball, he encounters Arabella Easton, a sheltered yet spirited heiress striving to forge her own path. As secrets unfold and danger closes in, their cautious courtship turns into a tender bond neither expected.
🖋 Writing Style & Vibe • Crisp and clever Regency prose with light suspense • Banter-filled yet emotionally rich • Wholesome romance with a touch of intrigue • Perfectly paced for fans of clean, character-driven historical love stories
❤️ My Highlights ✨Silas Yorke: A layered hero with a compelling redemption arc. His restraint, honor, and vulnerability make him quietly swoon-worthy. ✨Arabella Easton: Intelligent and curious, she longs for autonomy after a life of constraint. Watching her grow in confidence was deeply satisfying. ✨Their romance is steeped in emotional honesty, with trust built through shared vulnerability and mutual respect. ✨I especially loved how their masked beginnings mirrored their hidden selves—both longing to be known and accepted beyond appearances. ✨Arabella’s journey of navigating familial expectations while discovering her voice was one of the most emotionally resonant parts of the story.
🎭 Mood A thoughtful blend of grace, danger, and soft romance—like a quiet waltz in a shadowed ballroom, filled with longing and restrained affection.
🤔 What Fell Flat (if anything) Some might wish for more external stakes earlier in the plot, but the introspective pacing serves the character arcs well.
⭐ Final Rating + Shelf Status 4 ⭐️ | Keep-worthy and perfect for re-reading when in need of a clean, swoony mystery-romance.
🎯 For Readers Who Love 💕 Disgraced noblemen on the road to redemption 💕 Strong yet gentle heroines learning to speak up 💕 Secret identities, masked encounters, and slow-burn tension 💕 A clean blend of romance, suspense, and historical charm
Loved. Martha Keyes does a great job with dialogue and playful flirting. I realized pretty quickly who Arabella’s father was. I had to put aside my logical brain to see past how Arabella reacted to her father being banished, Silas realizing he was involved with his enemies daughter, Silas inherits everything leaving all the other victims without restitution, that Silas would even consider leaving a murder in the hands of his daughter to potentially hurt other people…but once I stopped thinking to deeply about that I loved the book. Great build up moments. I think I will buy this one.
Arabella has been sheltered by her father. Silas has moved to London to clear his name. They meet at a party and he protects her from drunk guys. She is very suspicious of him. They meet soon after and she begins to warm up to him. He really loved her from the moment he saw her in the butterfly dress. One day he goes to get her punch and see Drayton, the man who framed him for murder. Drayton is her father. She catches him in her father’s study and Silas explains that her dad is a murderer. She kicks him out but does some digging and realizes her father is more selfish than she knew. She eventually confronts him. He confesses by blaming her for his actions saying they were done for her. She finds a ledger and gives it to Silas, but he decides he would rather live a wanted man than bring harm to her and her sisters. She eventually gives it to William, the Duke, who brings it to the Prince regent. Drayton is stripped of his title and land, and exiled to France. Silas gets all his unencumbered stuff which includes his textile business. Arabella and Silas get married and she starts doing the window displays and the store. She also brought her sisters to live with them.

I have been eagerly awaiting Silas’s story since I read Reputation at Risk a year ago and the wait was DEFINITELY worth it!! If you have not read this series you need to pick it up now and have a binge reading session!
Silas is such a strong and resilient character. He didn’t let his false accusation keep him down, instead pursuing any possibly means of acquiring his freedom through the support of one of his brothers and eventually his whole family. Silas was such a delight to read. He is kind and charismatic and such a flirt, I couldn’t get enough of his banter with Arabella. We get to watch him struggle with his feelings towards Arabella while also having to maintain his secret identity. He cares for her so deeply that he can’t keep away from her, even at the risk of his own life.
Arabella was so strong and sweet and it was so nice to watch her join society and make friends. She is such a kind and compassionate character, showing great care for all those close to her. It was also nice to see her ultimately struggle with trust and the truth as we neared the end of the story. The decision she had to make was not an easy one, but I admire the way Martha Keyes resolved their story.
This is a must read, but especially if you love historical romance, forbidden love, hidden identity, and the perfect teasing and banter Martha infuses into her characters relationships.
Content: Clean kisses No language Manipulative family figure Murder (in the past, no details)
3.5 stars This book was a fun regency romp. Silas was as fun in this novel as he was in the last one, and I was excited that he got a turn to have all the attention. The FMC was sweet, naive, and made me think a little of the FMC in A Confirmed Rake. I loved how sweet both characters were, both to each other and to the others around them. It was also nice to have closure with the accusations thrown at Silas.
There were a few things that made it less than 5 stars for me. One, and this is a bit of a spoiler so get ready... Why do all of Martha Keyes' women do the asking and speak the declarations first?!!!!!!! (not all of them, and I'm exaggerating a bit) Like, I understand it's supposed to be sweet, but this is the Regency era. Only Lydia's are so forthright and the sweet FMC here would have known better, naive or not.
It took me a second to get into the book. Actually, I had to go back and read the second book again to remember all the brother's names and their relation to Silas to help me get into it better. While this book is technically a stand-alone, you won't get the full experience and understand what is going on with Silas properly, if you start here, I think.
Everything was tied so neatly in a bow a little quickly. I kept thinking, "Wait, that was it?" Don't get me wrong, poor Silas needed things to start going better for him, but the last few chapters were a whirlwind!
I love this series so much! The continuing plot line throughout and the many MANY misadventures involving the Yorke brothers keeps you coming back for more! I’m so excited to have Silas’ story now!
Silas has been on the run from being accused of murder. Now he is even more determined to find the evidence needed to clear his name. But a chance encounter with a beautiful woman at Vauxhill might put a wrench in his plans…
Arabella has been sheltered for most of her life, so a visit to London is the perfect escape from her usual reality. Little does she know that the man who comes to her rescue one night has the power to change her future forever.
I loved how these two meet and the continual meetings and banter throughout. Every interaction between Silas and Arabella was so great and I thoroughly enjoyed the journey these two take. It was fun uncovering more of the plot and mystery and I loved how it all came about in the end. There were enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. I even gasped out loud as one piece of the puzzle got revealed!
Highly recommend this series!
I received an advanced copy of this book from the author. I was not required to leave a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I have been eager for Silas’s story since the beginning. His plight tugged at my heart and I have been cheering for the Yorke brothers in every book.
I was expecting one thing and I was completely surprised. I may have gasped. I was utterly hooked, turning the pages wondering how it would unfold.
The easy banter between Silas and Arabella made my heart flutter. Silas was so charming. His teasing was sweet.
I loved Arabella’s joy in everything. She’s finally seeing things after being sheltered her whole life. This new world of hers opens her eyes to some unfortunate truths. She handled it all with a grace and maturity that was impressive.
I loved the Yorke brothers and the whole family in general coming together to fight for Silas.
Added bonus was Aunt Eugenia. She was a hoot and I adore her.
"Oh, come, William," Aunt Eugenia said. "You had your romantic scandal. Anthony had his. It is Silas's turn."
Another great addition to The Chronicles of Misadventures. This is book 3 in the series and it can be read as a standalone, but all the books are fantastic, so I would read them in order if you’re going to read them. This story follows Silas York a.k.a. John Hayes, who has been in hiding after being accused of murder. He has finally returned to London to gather the evidence to set him free. He has no need nor time for romance right now. But when he attends the masquerade ball, he stumbles upon an enchanting butterfly. Arabella is finally in London after her father has basically sequestered she and her sisters to their country estate. When she attends her first masquerade ball with her aunt and cousin, she is gallantly rescued by a new acquaintance. This is just the beginning of a long wonderful story that has many twists and turns, witty banter, and sweet attraction. it is set in Regency era and is it clean wholesome romance. A very delightful story.!
First of all, can we just have a moment for this cover?? This entire series has definitely been easy on the eyes 😍
We finally got Silas’ story, and it was everything I hoped for and more! Watching him navigate society as a wanted man and falling in love at the same time? Sign me up 😂
Silas’ social status created a forbidden romance unlike anything I’ve read for a while. I loved watching him go from “I’ll do anything to clear my name” to “…maybe she’s worth more than that?” I loved Arabella’s quiet strength and how Silas helped her recognize and fight for her true worth. From the dynamic meet cute to the twists I honestly didn’t see coming to the happily ever after, I was enthralled!
Once again, we have such a fun cast of characters that added so much to the story. Both Silas’ and Arabella’s families were key parts of their love story, and I loved seeing couples of books past. I can’t wait to see what stories come next!
I've been curious about the elusive Silas Yorke throughout the A Chronicle of Misadventures series, so it was with great interest that I learned about his harrowing story from his own perspective. And harrowing it was! Once again I marveled at how Martha Keyes manages to weave a tale in such a way that it's entirely plausible that a satisfactory conclusion will be impossible for our protagonists. It keeps me reading and wondering how it will ever possibly be resolved. There were some truly unexpected twists! I was stunned that I never suspected them. Brava! Despite the despicable villain, this was a sweet love story. It also manages to provide some deeper, thought-provoking perspectives on the nuances of love and intentions. An enjoyable continuation of the Yorke brothers' saga. Can't wait for the next one!
I hate to say it but I’m a little bit disappointed in this because I expected it to be my next 5 star book. But it was a cute story and it was fun to read!
My biggest pet peeve in romance books is when the main couple likes each other really early on (maybe it’s because I read too many enemies to lovers books idk). I loved the two main characters, especially Silas, but I felt like they liked each other soooo quickly that the romance didn’t have any time to develop. Maybe it’s the trope of forbidden love I just don’t like, I’m not sure. I just know I didn’t absolutely love this one which sucks :(
It wasn’t bad by any means though, it was cute and the story was very fun and entertaining. I liked all the characters and it got pretty instense near the end too which was a good addition! All in all, it was a good book, I think I was just expecting more slow burn.
AHHHH! So goooooood! First of all, I was SO excited for Silas's book, and I was in no way disappointed. This series has been hilarious and fun and emotional--ALL THE THINGS. And I can't get enough. I love these brothers and their misadventures. I love the banter between them, but as always, Martha pulls off the romantic tension and character depth with perfection. Silas is just a lovable goober and Arabella (even as the daughter of his enemy) is his match in every way. This one kept me on the edge of my seat, and I couldn't put it down. I needed resolution! I needed justice! And both were delivered neatly wrapped in a perfectly romantic package with all the feels. Loved, loved, loved it and I cannot wait for the next one! Exceptional
I've been waiting for Silas's story since Book 1, and I was not disappointed. I appreciated that even though Silas's primary purpose was clearing his name, he didn't become selfish about it. As for sweet Arabella, I loved that she valued family ties so much. That certainly made her a good fit to join the Yorke family. I also loved the way that Arabella's joy at new experiences impacted Silas. They were a perfect match despite the difficulties they faced.
Though technically this could be read and understood as a standalone, I highly suggest starting with the first book in the series to get the full picture of Silas's story.
Though this is my review of an E-ARC, I loved this book and have pre-ordered my own copy.
