This is not a romance. This is not the story you pick up to escape. This is the story you pick up to face everything we, as a society, pretend doesn’t exist.
Julie Ann Addicott didn’t write a comforting narrative. She wrote a biographical brutal truth wrapped in fiction. She handed us Carlie—a child born into the unthinkable: the world of child sex trafficking—and didn’t flinch for a second. And neither should we.
This book devastated me. It shattered me. It bled pain and strength and survival on every page. And I loved it for exactly that.
Carlie’s journey is not easy to witness. It is graphic. It is heartbreaking. It is a literary punch in the stomach so forceful, it knocks the air out of you. But it should. Because this horror is real, even if the characters are not.
This isn’t a story wrapped in ribbons and healing tropes. It’s raw survival. A voice for the voiceless. A mirror to the ugliest truths we’re too afraid to face.
It got banned. And if that doesn’t prove how powerful and necessary it is—I don’t know what does. This story needed to be told. And we need to listen.
⚠️ Trigger Warning: As the author says, this is NOT a romance. This is not for everyone. It’s dark. It’s violent. It’s soul-wrecking. But it’s also real. And it’s important.
I truly fear that some readers didn’t understand what they held in their hands. Because this wasn’t written for comfort. It was written for awareness. For truth. For change.
And honestly? This is Julie Ann Addicott’s best work yet. I applaud her for daring to write what others are too afraid to say out loud.
WARNING If you are triggered by childhood sexual abuse, incest, rape, read the reviews before diving in. The author has a warning with the blurb too. TAKE HEED
The story begins with Carlie who is abused by her father and twin brother and sold as a sex slave which we later find out is a child sex trafficking ring run by her father and involving other girls. Carlie is recused by Eli (love him!!!!!!) who has his own back story and tries to stop the abuse happening by taking her to a "safe" town. The journey Carlie takes from being used and abused and sold to any man who wants to fulfill his sick needs is one that will tear your heart from your chest and smash it on the pavement.
Be prepared to ugly cry
There are moments of happiness and hope and of sheer terror and pain that will have you on the edge of your seat while simultaneously crying and screaming along with the characters. Reaching part two of this novel was a feat I wasn't sure I'd make but it was so worth it.
Without giving too much away, Carlie's life is an emotional rollercoaster of ups and down until it all comes to a grinding halt at chap 41/42 then again at chap 50. This chapter destroyed me. The writing is phenomenal, the author has pulled out everything to give readers of Love Lost Her Way every emotion there is on the human spectrum. Nothing is shied away from AT ALL.
I've loved Addicott's writing since her debut of Demon Soul but If i had to go back now, I'd drop a star from each of those books and add it to this one. Addicott has grown so much as an author and this book proves she's got the ability to write more than paranormal fantasy and angels.
This is a hard book to review because it triggered me in so many ways. Being the victim of incest and childhood sexual abuse I first want to applaud the author for writing about this in a way which does not glorify it. I felt EVERY F*ING THING Admittedly, I had to put this down for a few days and come back to it purely because of how realistically the abuse is portrayed.
Another reviewer said this book shouldn't have been written because of the themes. I do not agree. This story NEEDS to be read by people who don't believe this shit happens every day around the world. Whether it's fiction or non-fiction, or just damn f*ing good research, I honest to God have no idea but I felt this book down to my soul and it will stay with me forever.
PROS because I need to add these Carlie's character. Her weakness turned into strength until she had the courage to stand up for herself. Carlie is a character that will stay with me forever. Eli. What a true hero and character with depth and drive. Declan and Xavier. No spoilers here. Both these guys were perfect. Abby & Jake (insert all the love emotions)
CONS Cathie. No words. The father and brother disgusted me to the point of wanting to throw my kindle across the room. While I loved the ending I wanted to know more. I wanted at least another ten chapters on her new life.
Ms Addicott you've truely outdone yourself with this novel and I thank you for bringing light to a subject no one wants to hear about.
Wow. I'm not even sure how to put into words just how much I loved this entire book. Love Lost Her Way has just been added to the top 5 favorite books I have ever read, and I feel like I wont be the only one saying this. &I am being 100% truthful when I say I do not have 1 single complaint. Julie Anne Addicott is not only an incredible poet, she is a phenomenal writer as well. This book has touched my heart in so many ways. I don't think any other book has ever evoked so much emotion from me. It takes a lot to make me cry while reading a book, but this story had me experiencing all the feels, and I doubt any other reader will be exempt from getting emotional while reading this story either. I feel you should go into this book somewhat blind to get the full experience, so I will only be giving a very simple explanation. This story is about a girl named Carlie. Carlie's start at life was filled with consistent tragedy. This book tells her story of strength, love, and inevitable happiness. While reading, you will find yourself smiling along with the characters, crying during the overwhelming feeling of certain situations, experiencing fear during graphic and heartbreaking times, and, last but not least, you will find yourself feeling peaceful and content while watching Carlie's strength and self confidence grow. While this book may have triggering situations, just know that Julie has handled these topics gracefully and with respect. She also gives a very vivid view of the effects of grief and trauma, and how important it is to know when to ask for help. So, make sure to read Love Lost Her Way, and I promise you, you absolutely will not be disappointed. Don't allow yourself to miss out on such a unique and original story. Carlie will help you recognize just how important it is to never give up! So take my word, and make sure to read Love Lost Her Way as soon as is possible! -P.S. Make sure to pay attention to the poems at the beginning of each chapter. They are yet another unique way at giving a glance at what to expect in the upcoming chapter.
This is the BEST book of 2019! Julie's words took me on an emotional roller coaster ride from which I'm still recovering. The story and well developed characters prey upon your heart and mind, which left me in absolute tatters when I finished the story. All in all the sign of a magnificent book. This dark story follows the journey of Carlie as a child born into the child sex trafficking world. I wept, cried, screamed with her on her journey towards the light. This book does not glamorize this horrific and ever so real issue in our society today, rather it highlights one survivor's account of enduring, living through and recovering from the absolute worst of humanity. A story of how someone considered insignificant for anything other than the ability to be sexual can find themselves and perhaps even love. A story of how someone with such a tortured spirit endures tragedy after tragedy which would drive even the most grounded well-loved person to the brink. This is not a story for those who are easily tormented by darkness, evil and horrific actions humans do to one another. The violence and graphic scenes enhance the story by showing just how resilient the human heart and mind can be in the face of absolute terror. The overarching theme of child sexual trafficking is something that is considered to be a dirty little secret in our society. Something shameful we avoid talking about. I applaud the author for not only discussing this in her story, but showing how someone can not only endure it but survive it. Though this book is solely fiction, perhaps as others read about this awful reality for so many children, we can put a light into the darkness and work towards eradicating this evil in the world. In all honesty, this is her best book to date. Bravo Julie Ann Addicott.
Addicott does this phenomenal job of capturing every fiber of your heart and soul with Love Lost Her Way! The emotions just ensnare you and immediately makes you love and hate the characters in this book! Love Lost Her Way is beautifully written, it touches on subjects that are horrifyingly dark, painful, and tragic. Addicott does an amazing job of not glamorizing the dark parts, rather feeds you the emotions that dwell in those depths. There is hurt, pain, disgust, horror, rage, sadness, love, and hope. I've felt it all.
Love Lost Her Way is a book that will not let me go. Its gonna be with me for a long time. It is Addicotts best work, and she did it with such poise and grace. You can tell she spent her time researching the subject matter; you can tell she poured her entire soul into creating such a masterpiece.
I’m not good at writing reviews, so be patient with me here, but this book is BEAUTIFUL.
Every chapter starts with a poem that tugs at your heart strings. I don’t want to say much and give anything away, but this book really is written to perfection. I’ll admit it can be a little hard to read for that very reason. It’s not overdramatized and I think because of the very heart felt, real life way it was written it can be... intense at times. But worth it.
My heart broke a little mid-part two. I’m not sure it ever fully healed from THAT part, but the ending was perfect. I adore Abby. I’m a vegan for the same reasons as her so I instantly connected with her, haha.
If you can handle triggers, this book is a journey that is 100% worth diving into. Beautiful Julie Ann Addicott💜
Again, thank you so much Ann for buddy reading this book with me. If it wouldn't for you I wouldn't have the courage to pick this up then. I'll go mad over my thoughts and I will be in a state of emotional/mental distress. We spoke about the book over chat so the only thing left to do is write a review,
So here we go...
This book made me sobbed like a baby and I don't say it lightly. I have been anxious reading this book. Just read the Title. The story alone is very much the definition of a page-turner, from the get-go, you can't help but feel engaged and invested with the narrative and characterization. Julie Anne Addicott did a pretty amazing job when it comes to the writing style and characterization. She knows how to conveys the right emotions to her readers. Our heroine went through so much shit in her life since she was 4 years old. She was manipulated, traumatized, and abused both in physical and mental states. It's heartbreaking to read her standpoint. Then she meets our Hero who accepted her scarred past and loves her unconditionally. He showed what real loved is. It was pure and endlessly. Then in a blink of an eye, everything changed. It was devastating and shattering.
The only reason why I give this 4 stars because of the last 40% mark. I flew through the first 60% mark, the writing is very engrossing and the story pacing is natural, storyline-wise it was executed in utter perfection. Then the plot twist happens, and everything felt rushed, forced, and such a let down at least in my opinion. There's not enough build of the relationship, and it's such a tricky and gutsy move to pull out a plotline and throw it in the last 20% mark because there's a big chance that it wouldn't feel genuine and relatable for the readers. And that's exactly what I was feeling. In all honesty, I would be so much happy if the heroine just solely focus on healing herself and loving her twins. Because she's and went through hell for fucked sake. Just take a breather for a moment you know. I would still consider it a happy ending no matter how unconventional it is. What I don't appreciate is your writing a superfluous plotline for the sake of happiness and ever after. Because that's not how life works in general. But I can understand this is fictional yet it's just that me.
Love Lost Her Way What a phenomenal book, I have read many amazing books in my life but I know this one is going to stay with me forever, one that I will never forget . It’s so hard to express in words what this book means to me and just how phenomenal it really is, I guess you are just going to have read it to understand why this book has left me unable to express to you just how amazing it truly is. Such a heart breaking and beautiful story of a girl so broken yet so beautiful and brave.
It's tragic. It's heartbreaking. You'll cry. Take the warnings seriously. This is not a book to be taken lightly. It's beautiful. Oh how I loved it. I cried so many times, and I laughed a few. This book is so worth the read. Julie you are amazing.

Julie has done it again . This book will take you on a roller coaster of emotions that will suck you in from the very first page . I feel like my heart has been ripped from my chest in the most delicious way . 5 stars isn’t enough Easily one of the best books of 2019
Love Lost Her Way First and foremost, this is a very deep, dark, and heavy read. If you are triggered easily be warned. But please, PLEASE do not let this stop you. This is by far one of the most emotionally charged books I have ever read!
“Monsters in the shadows And hidden in plain sight Preying on the hopeless Predators by night”
Julie Anne will suck you in with this book and you will find yourself holding your breath! We meet Carlie as a young child who goes through emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. She has acts of so many depraved things a young child nor adult should ever deal with by the people who are suppose to love her the most. Thinking that is what love is Carlie only wants to make them happy despite the thoughts of uncertainty. Throughout this book you will experience hate, anger, sadness. And yes you will need the tissues. But it will pull you in and keep you wanting to read to see that she may be bent, she is not broken. After finding love and trying to move past the painful memories that haunt her, you will see a beautiful growth from Carlie. With the help of people who support her, she can learn to find some light in the darkness. But, that darkness is always lurking, and waiting. Can she truly ever find happiness and peace? Or she destined to be pulled into the darkness and despair? These answers are found when you read Love Lost Her Way!

Julie does something truly amazing and beautiful with this story. You can feel the blood, sweat, and pieces of her soul she lovingly ripped out to build these characters up and send them on their way. It’s a very powerful story that has some dark themes. Yet there is not a moment that doesn’t feel real and weigh heavy on your heart. Even if you haven’t lived a life like hers this will give you a small idea of what it would be like to walk a day in her shoes. For anyone that has ever been silenced you might find a piece of you in her.
The characters have a depth that draws you in. The details create such vivid imagery you feel immersed in each moment and go on the emotional roller coaster ride of your life. It feels at times that if you don’t hold on tight enough you might just fall into the darkness as well. Every stroke of the pen feels natural and each tear rips your heart out a bit more. The pacing is great and keeps you on the edge of your seat at each turn. The journey the main character goes on is not one of flowers and rainbows. It’s an intricate masterpiece sewn together with shame, loss, hopelessness, pain, and heart wrenching sadness. The characters are now stitched into my soul forever. I survived this journey, can you?
Love Lost Her Way is one of the most powerful stories I've ever read. The story of Carlie's life is a raw, horrific, dark tale that is occasionally sprinkled with just enough light to keep the reader from going mad. Addicott sheds light on a subject that most people turn a blind eye to, believing that it will never happen in their safe little world. The details are graphic and stomach-turning, but written so matter of factly that the reader can absorb them as part of this necessary tale. Normally when I read a book, I'm looking for a strong heroine that takes no crap and brushes everything off. For me, the power in this story came from the heroine being able to break down and admit that she was not ok. Her strength and healing were forged in the fire of admitting that at times she couldn't and didn't want to deal with the life she was given. This is one of the most thought-provoking and emotional books I've ever read. I'm talking full on ugly cry, throw my Kindle across the room pain. This is also one of the most phenomenal books I've ever read. Congratulations Julie Anne Addicott on this masterpiece you have created.
I have been looking forward to reading this book for a while now. As with all of Julie Anne Addicott's other books, it didn't cease to amaze me. But this one, this one will hit your heart.
The way Julie Anne Addicott wrote this story, you'll think you're actually in it. Such vivid description. I could picture all the characters in my head, what they look like, what they went through. I thought about them, well after I was finished reading the book. Some parts of the book were a little hard to read, as it hit home for me, but I was unable to put it down.
This isn't the genre of books I usually read, but I am so glad I gave this book a chance! This has to be Julie Anne Addicott's best work so far.
This book is differently a 5 star read. It ripped my heart out from the very begininng. The things that happened to Carlie are just awful but its a bit healing how she powers through. If you have any triggers with abuse of any kind I would reccommand you take this book slowly. This book helped me over come some fears ive had. Julie Anne addicott you once again wrote a amazing story.
4.5 beautiful stars!!!! Loved this book! Many times I was crying some big ugly tears while still reading with all the words blurry from my tears. This was beautifully written.
Although this book does have some romance in it, this is not a romance novel. It follows Carlie, a girl who was abused, in more ways then one, lose all hope. Until she met Declan. He shined hope and light into her life. He helped show her the power of love- not just what she grew up believing was love- he saved her. And then, he was gone. How does Carlie go on when there is no hope left and love is lost? This book was raw, emotional, powerful, and heartbreaking. It took me days to read it, because of how much emotion it pulled from me in it's grip. It was such a beautiful written tragic tale of a girl who grew up with so much abuse- physical, sexual. It was hard to read at some points, because I related to Carlie and some of the things she had been through. Glad I continued reading - to find out how Carlie's story ended. How she went from such tragedy, to who she was at the end. Even though the story was raw & heartbreaking it was still written beautifully. And this will be a story that stays with me for a long time, burried deep in the marrows of my bones. 4.5 tear stained ⭐s out of 5⭐. Warning: this book is recommended for 18 yrs old & up. There is some subjects that may be triggering to read. This isn't a romance novel, but rather a tragedy that contains romance.
This book will not be everyones cup of Tea, especially if you have triggers, BUT with that being said, it is a story that needs to be told! It is real, and raw, and powerful! And it shows us that no matter what horrible crap we go through, survival is possible with the right person by your side! This story ripped my heart out and tore it to shreds and I loved every minute of it! Julie Ann’s writing is amazing, its moving!
Its finally here!!! 😍😍😍 This book had my emotions all.over the place since I started reading it! This story is raw, its tragic, its emotional, but it's a story that needs to be told!! I loved it so much! There will be moments you will want to get in the book and fight for her, but then you will be so proud of her!! This is a must read book
This is the hardest review I've had to write and the hardest book I've read in my f*ing life.
I'm starting off with why I'm giving this book four stars. I've read all of Addicott's novels and poetry and love her writing style, attention to detail, and the way she creates beautiful imagery with words. I'm a massive fan of her PNR novels and was admitedly hesitant to read this one with it not being PNR. Love Lost Her Way has all of that imagery and more BUT the themes were so realistic I found it hard to push through. Thank God for my buddy reader friend Brooke!!!!!
The book starts with Carlie a 17 y/o girl who were told lives at home with her father, little sister and twin brother. Right from the get go were given explicit details of Carlie's sexual abuse and grooming by her father from her pov when she's 5y/o. Here's where my issues lied. As a mother of a 4y/o daughter, reading about the sexual abuse from a child's pov was confronting, devastating, heartbreaking - God help me I needed to put this book down so many times because the sheer weight of what was happening was bringing me to tears.
Further into the story, Carlie is rescued and I was hoping her life would get better right from that moment. I was wrong. I don't want to give away spoilers but Carlie's happiness doesn't last. She struggles throughout the story (and her life) trying to find hope and the meaning of love without being seen as an object to be used for sex. There are many flashbacks from different ages and times in her life. Some are terribly sad and some are unbelievably horrific.
Around the end of part 2 I found myself relaxing slightly and cheering for the good to overcome the bad. Again I was wrong. If you want to read a tragedy, this is hands down the book you're looking for.
I perservered and made it to Chapter 50 where again I needed to take a breather. After this its smooth sailing for a short while and without giving away too much, almost everyone gets what they deserve.
I commend Ms Addicott on writing this story it takes a strong brave person to be able to put these themes into words the way they have been. And God please if you have a daughter hold her a little tighter and look for the signs of abuse. Love Lost Her Way opened my eyes to the horrors of the world and I was thankful for the links at the end of the book that took me to websites where I found information I never knew existed.
I don't normally read this type of book but I have read the Untamed series and first 2 of the Fallen series by the same author and they were fantastic reading from this author so I thought I would try this book ... Well she did not disappoint me with this one .. It was gut wrenching ,brutal , tearjerking and tragic about a little girl bought up to be nothing but a commodity for her father and her brother and to be sold to the highest bidder .. I was so drawn into the story wondering what more could happen to this girl after being treated so badly all her life .. the twists and turns just kept me going and sometimes I had to stop reading and take a breather ... It is so gripping and the descriptivness makes you feel like you are actually there and I could see and feel what was going on but I do not want to give too much away because it will spoil your reading experience .. But believe me this is one book that you have to read as you cannot turn a blind eye to this story as this sort of thing actually happens in today's society ... This author is a brilliant storyteller ... She deserves so much credit for writing a book of this nature and I commend her for what has done with Brilliant book , loved it

Love Lost Her Way is a raw, gritty and chilling story of devastation, loss, injustice, love, friendship and hope. This book touched me on such a deep level that I felt it down to my core for weeks after reading it. Zahra's story is one that I won't ever forget and will think of her often. Wondering how she is doing and where life has taken her.
Addicott did an amazing job writing a story that contains such darkness. This book captured me from the beginning, often times making me feel like I was living the story right along with the characters. I have never felt such strong emotions of animosity, fear, heart break, desperation, hopefulness, love and sorrow. This is not a romance story. This is a story of survival, redemption and rebirth.
I'll be completely honest and tell you that the subject of this book is one I would normally not read. I tend to stay away from books such as this one.
However I decided to give this book a try and I can't tell you how happy I am that I did. I would be missing out on such an amazing story had I not. It will remain one of my all time favorite stories ever published.

5 stars isn't enough for this book. A dirty secret that happens more often than any of us want to admit. A story that must be told.
This book was a journey through all my emotions for me. This is the 3rd book I've ever read to make me cry. I was living through the anxiety of the aftermath and found myself so caught up in this story the real world fell to the background. I had to take several breaks because the pain was so real. Julie captures the raw emotions that this tragic life brings.
This story is exceptionally written and needs to be read. This book is so much more than just words on a page about a love story. This story has become a part of me. I will never forget Zahra and her journey.
Wow! What can I say? This book is awesome.... but is an emotional roller coaster for sure. Julie Anne Addicott takes us on a seriously intense journey into the world of child sex trafficking and pulls no punches - quite the opposite as she clearly depicts the horror of young Carlie’s world. It provides “all the feels” and I cried...hard...as she depicts this young girls horrific life with us. Although fictional, due to the depth of the characters, and obvious research, it reads as a true story. Please don’t let the dark theme put you off it truly is a brilliant book and when I say it provides “all the feels” it truly does and it will stay with you I’m sure. Well done Julie Anne Addicott for another amazing read and, dare I say, maybe your best yet?! (And I F-LOVED her other books!)
