Tapestry #1

A Distortion of Fate

Rate this book
Calverous Curtaim learned a brutal lesson beneath the blade of his childhood hero: ambitious men will do anything—sacrifice anyone—to rise. Fourteen years later, Calver has embraced martyrdom as a means of redemption to those he was forced to leave behind. But first he'll have to break a monopoly on magical technology, evade a capture worse than death, and dethrone a dictator—all without succumbing to the insatiable bloodlust of his mind-djinn.

Amidst the chaos of failed plans and the search for answers, a forbidden act of compassion entwines Calver’s path with Raimee: a refugee with unthinkable powers, no control over them, and a total thing for him. As he tries to claw back control over his failing redemption, Calver plunges into a conspiracy far deeper than he imagined, while rekindling a hope for revolution… without war. At a crossroads of duty and destiny, he faces down the harrowing decision he never thought he’d make: choosing to stay alive.

A Distortion of Fate is the first installment in the Tapestry saga, a dark, political sci-fantasy reminiscent of Arcane and The Lies of Locke Lamora. Woven across four perspectives and a dozen timelines, Lindsey’s debut examines the motivations of mortals and the things worth saving as it barrels towards a deadly climax.

4.5⭐️ I’m honestly shocked this book doesn’t have more hype and ratings. With only around 100 ratings, A Distortion of Fate feels like a hidden gem that deserves way more attention!
From the very first few pages, I was completely drawn in. The intricate worldbuilding and layered political scheming scratched a part of my brain I didn’t know I needed. It’s rich and complex, but still totally readable and easy to fall into.

The characters are flawed and fascinating, and I found myself fully invested in each POV. I especially loved Calver’s dynamic with Raimee. Their scenes had this charged tension that kept me hooked. I also really appreciated how, as the characters started putting the pieces together, I was right there with them, experiencing the epiphanies and connections as they unfolded.

My only small gripe is that some of the early descriptions of Raimee lean into this “petite girl” framing that felt a bit too childlike, especially given her strength and presence. I get that it was meant to show how frail and starving she was when first introduced, but some of the wording still rubbed me the wrong way. But aside from that, this was such a satisfying read.

If you like science fantasy with high-stakes politics, layered characters, a subplot of romance and a story that makes you feel smart as it all clicks into place, I’d absolutely recommend it.

Full disclosure I was given a copy of this as an arc reader in exchange for an honest review.

Holy hell.

I'm going to start off by being frank I struggled at points with this book because my adhd didn't help me with keeping track of POVs and timelines but the more I read the easier it got for me. - I consider this a me issue not a book or author issue to be clear.

This story is so well thought out, the only way I can imagine M.J.Lindsey kept track of this was a corkboard and a lot of red string running between lines because this is a very complicated and imaginative piece of work.

She has written flawed characters which I love, it's a breath of fresh air with that as the characters recognise it to varying and believable degrees.

The Last few chapters had me sat muttering to myself as pieces of the timelines clicked futher into place in my head and wow.

Just fantastic, I really can't wait for Book 2!

We love a complex world with political intrigue - Lindsey has blended sci-fi and fantasy elements together masterfully - it's giving Mistborn vibes! I loved all 3 povs and the pacing and mystery unraveled and intersected in a such a beautifully smart manner. The characters were all damaged but in the best kind of way that had you invested in their success but they all felt so unique! Can't wait for book 2! This is definitely heavy reading from a world building perspective and I'm happy to hear a glossary is in the works for future editions. Thank you to the author for this ARC opportunity.

WOW! I knew there was going to be some serious world building when the author emphasized that this was not a romantasy while looking for ARC readers. She wasn’t kidding.

There is SO much information. And I don’t mean this as a complaint— I’m legitimately letting you know that this is not light, fluffy fare. This is a very well done blending of sci-fi with fantasy elements. This means you’re getting multiple POVs and pretty big info dumps with each change in POV, but you won’t be mad about it. If you’re not accustomed to reading dense sci-fi or fantasy then it may take you a bit to wade through everything , like it did for me. But what you’ll get is an excellent story that will have you waiting impatiently for book 2!

I read somewhere that if you're not confused in the first 100 pages of a book, it's not a good fantasy. This is the short version of this review - 5 stars, all the way.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Gosh darn I wished this book would not end and it did why oh why is this not an already established series with 5+ sequels? What do you mean the sequel is out next year? I need it now!

Sigh.. oh well

Any time I'm looking for a new book to read there's a certain thing that catches my interest enough to pick it up. Sometimes it's something minor like the use of a particular word as a slur in the blurb. For this one, it was the disability rep. I come across it once in a red moon and the representation is even more rare in a protagonist. And the cover is gorgeous!

The characters are the third strongest part of this book, but that doesn't mean they're poorly written. Quite the opposite!

I underestimated Niklaus and dismissed Attilatia at the start, but they both grew into fleshed out people as their stories unraveled. Atti's resourcefulness caught me by surprise and I laughed out loud a few times at Niklaus's quips. They're both on the struggle bus heading towards the other two but ended up there in vastly different ways.

Calver and Raimee have made this my comfort read for the past few days. I've enjoyed spending time with them so much. We have not had much insight into Raimee, but her gentleness with Calver touched my heart and it was a pleasure watching them navigate around each other and their defenses.

The plot and storytelling are the next strongest piece of this book and I can't talk about them separately because no fantasy series has ever been so aptly named. The story unravels like a lovingly woven tapestry with many intricate details. I mentioned being confused at the start because we are dropped smack in the middle of events and are fed pieces of info from everyone's perspective. We know less than the characters and the way the plot pieces come together is such a satisfying payoff! I haven't had such a payoff from a book since reading The Queen's Thief by Meghan Whalen Turner.

The best part of this story is the world building. It's so rich, it's more than what the majority of fantasy worlds consist of: war, religion and magic.
This one is lore, rumors and history, politics and science, and much much more that is yet to be revealed. I love the idea of distortion, and when it was finally revealed what it is I ate it up. Coupled with the last chapter, and the crumbs we were fed about Calver throughout the story, I am dying to find out where this goes in the next book!

Safe to say I'll keep my eyes open for "The Space Between Stars".

A Distortion of Fate combines the best of science fiction and fantasy into a masterwork that is both engaging and heart-wrenching. Lindsey’s intelligently rendered characters are easy to root for as they navigate a rich world of political intrigue, interpersonal conflict, and life-altering stakes. It's a compelling debut that keeps the pressure on until the very end.

If you love Lies of Locke Lamora, you absolutely need to read this book.

I was given an ARC of this book for an honest review.
First this is a romantasy with very deep, well developed characters in a thoroughly well designed and detailed world. The story is told from three different alternative viewpoints which can prove challenging, but again, rich with details. The single best word to describe the summation of the story, world building and characters is elaborate. Very elaborate and utterly fascinating.

This book is a dark, political sci-fi fantasy, multi-POV that tells the story of a current day political conflict and upheaval between the nations of Tera’athia and Nelfindar over the use of distortion, an energy source of unlimited potential that fuels Aetech technology. The story is interwoven between three protagonists. Calver, a victim of survival and the weapon of an underground organization at the center of political upheaval, who unexpectedly crosses paths with a Ruxian, the last of her people and the only person able to break down the walls he’s built over the years. Nicholas, investor of Aetech and prisoner to his high society life, fighting for social justice and hell-bent on exposing a nefarious political figure at all cost. And Attlatia, an Azadonian refugee and brilliant Aetech scientist with an abrasive personality. She has an obsession with distortion, the science behind the technology. With many secrets from her past life she is conducting secret experiments on company dime.

This book is told in such a beautiful, near perfect way. The storyline, character development, and world building advance by weaving together the past and present day. I was SO invested in finding out how the separate storylines of the present day were all in some way connected by the storylines told from the past. All of the characters are extremely likable, and I loved how the past gave you a better understanding of how they developed into the present day persons, but ESPECIALLY Calver. I’d say this is a slow burner, however does not drag in the slightest bit, and all comes together in a very explosive way. VERY GOOD.

The only reason this wasn’t a 4.75 out of 5 stars for me was I had a hard time reading the character introductory chapters. I felt like they were written in a completely different style than the rest of the book with too much creative writing. Rather than written things in a straightforward way it would be written as, something like “a character screwed their eyes shut.” The style was so prominent during these chapters that I had to consistently stop and think about what was being said that It really disrupted my flow of reading and ability to get into the story. I honestly almost DNF’d it because of it but thank god I didn’t because this was a banger. After those chapters though it was completely different and absolutely perfect. For rounding purposes on Goodreads though, it’s definitely more of a 5 than 4.

That being said, I’d recommend this to anyone that likes sci-fi/fantasy, political espionage, and a very well told storyline! It’s a 4.75/5 for me!!

Really solid sci-fantasy. All of the primary characters are great! Three-ish timelines- present, past, and distant-er past- are doled out at the perfect pace to keep me hooked. The action is well-written and believable, and slightly brutal but not gratuitously so. I'd been in a bit of a reading slump, and Distortion of Fate was the perfect thing to get me out of it-- I had to know where things were going once I hit halfway, and couldn't put it down.

My favorite character was Atti, although she's also the source of the one gripe I have with the book. While I think the choice to have her not speak fluently is meaningful and important for her character (reflecting HER choice to not want to speak fluently), to me the way her dialogue is reads as very specifically analogous to real world Chinese English learners (especially putting 'no' before verbs like 'no like'). The rest of the non-English words in the book very much enriched the world building and helped it not feel Standard Fantasy (TM), though, borrowing from real world cultures without being too direct of a mirror.

One of my favorite things in fantasy is a magic system that the characters can study and tease apart scientifically throughout the books (Sanderson is the best at this, and honorable mentions to Benedict Jacka and Rothfuss as well). The way magic works here is a step farther than that, to the point that characters disagree about where science stops and magic/religion starts. I really look forward to seeing how characters interact with this throughout the rest of the series!!!

There’s a lot going on in this book. Sometimes I felt like maybe too much which is why I took one star off from a 5 star rating. I enjoyed the overall story very much, but I felt that sometimes I had to work too hard to keep track of what was going on because it’s so dense.

The world building is intense, in a good way. Very intricate and full of potential. And also a lot of great character building.

If you like a solid fantasy/sci-fi story that doesn’t lean on romance to move the plot forward (I do) this is for you. It’s solid “epic high fantasy” with lots of multiple POV and timeline layers. There’s political intrigue, flawed characters, and even a little humor.

Really well done

Disclaimer: I am an ARC reader and have therefore been given a digital copy of the book for free in exchange for an honest review. I am a member of the author's Discord server and to my knowledge she has never tried to influence the reviews. I believe that my review is as objective as I can be.

TLDR: I very much enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the sequels. It is a pretty light and quick read.

It is not as long as the books I am used to reading, but the book's pace does not feel rushed.
A downside of the length of this book is that the number of side-characters you meet is limited. It is thus not a particularly broad introduction to the world, but moreso a deep one.

The setting of the book will not come as a surprise to people familiar with the fantasy genre, except for the inclusion of relatively advanced technology which drives the plot.
I largely like this addition, but wish it was explained a little better what the level of technology is. Especially as the first chapter introduces it with little explanation.

Unusually for books of this length there are multiple POV characters, but you get a good idea of the main characters' motivations and personalities.
The author has done a great job of giving each storyline a sense of mystery and allure. They entice you to keep reading and I enjoyed them all tremendously.
I also appreciate from a meta-perspective that it acknowledges the coincidences necessary to make the stories intertwined.
This is necessary to have a single overarching story, however it is normally brushed aside.
The reason for this coincidence is not given in the first book, but I hope it will be explained later in the series.

To conclude; I enjoyed the book thoroughly and much more than I was expecting - which is not to say that my first impression was bad.
I was a little worried whether I would be able to finish reading it before the end of the month (as was requested by the author) as I had to travel for work as well.
I ended up finishing it in only a few days because it was such a fun and light read.
I am very much looking forward to the sequels and would purchase them if I would not be invited to be an ARC reader again.

First, I just want to thank the author for sending me an E-ARC of a Distortion of Fate. It was such a great read.

This book delivered in the complex/morally ambiguous character front. And the political intrigue was *chef’s kiss.

A Distortion of Fate is a Political Science Fiction Fantasy told from multiple POVs at different periods of time. It centers around this energy source called Distortion which is a type of synthetic magic. It has limitations to its use but there are powers at work that wish to bypass these limitations and weaponize the it to achieve their goals and attain further power.

The characters and the world-building are just so well done. The characters have compelling backstories that shape how they became to be in their current situation and explores their morals on current political stances.

This is a heavy worldbuilding book, so keep that in mind when you read it, but by the end everything is woven together so beautifully. I am honestly so excited for the next book in this series.

This book captivated me from the very first page, keeping me glued to the story. The pacing felt just right, with chapters that often left me saying, "just one more" until I was deeper into the night than I intended.

Niklaus quickly became my favorite character. His sharp wit and raw emotion brought a refreshing depth to the narrative, making every scene he was in a standout. Lindsey's portrayal of his damaged psyche and relentless pursuit of setting things straight had me eagerly anticipating his next appearance.

What truly sets this book apart is Lindsey’s prose. Her skill as a writer shines through in every carefully crafted sentence, creating a world that feels both vivid and immersive. It's been amazing to have a book of substance I could really sink my teeth into, and this one hit the spot.

The plot's complexity was a pleasant surprise. The multi-layered conspiracy had me on edge, wondering how it would all unravel. Each character’s journey was interwoven masterfully, with secrets that kept me guessing.

Overall, this book was a gripping read, filled with memorable characters and a plot that never ceased to thrill.

A Distortion of Fate: by M.J. Lindsey is a very coolblend of science fiction and fantasy that took me on a super fun ride. Lindsey’s writing engaging the characters are well-developed and relatable, each with their own unique motivations and struggles.
Lindsey’s debut novel is reminiscent of works like Arcane and The Lies of Locke Lamora, offering a dark, political sci-fantasy that keeps you engaged The world-building is well-done blending fantasy elements with sci-fi technology(I for one now need a liqor chair). The plot is full of twists, leading to a climax that leaves you anticipating the next installment in the Tapestry saga

If you’re a fan of intricate plots, well-crafted characters, and dark paths, A Distortion of Fate is well worth you time It’s an excellent debut that promises great things for the future of the series.

A Distortion of Fate by MJ Lindsey, book one of Tapestry Saga ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

First, I'd like to apologize to MJ for not finishing my ARC by release day. Life got in the way and I took on more ARCs in September than I could realistically handle.
That said, this book was AMAZING! The pacing kept me on the edge of my seat and I didn't want to put it down.
Calver, our mute MMC with a tortured past and secrets. Atti with her single minded determination but heart of gold. Niklaus and his entitled optimism. They all came together so well and that ending 😱 Blew my mind!
Every storyline wound together in such a mind blowing away that I'm seriously in awe of your story telling abilities. I'm 💯 here for this saga and can't wait for book two!!

I LOVE intricate and extremely detailed plot lines and this one hit the nail on the head! This book was so well written with 3 POVs (and a sneaky 4th) along with an intricate political plot line that spans across several timelines. Think Cloud Atlas but darker, more sci-fi, and more fantastical! Said to be reminiscent of Arcane and The Lies of Locke Lamora but I haven’t read either of those so my mind keeps going to Cloud Atlas meets maybe Final Fantasy. However, those comps seem very accurate. Nevertheless….

A moment of applause please for an outstanding novel! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Now I won’t lie, this story is as complex as they come. It takes a minute to fully grasp the characters, the world, and what the heck is fully happening, but when you do, it makes for some EPIC political intrigue. 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️ I do believe it could’ve benefited greatly from a glossary and pronunciation guide in the beginning though.

Lindsey has crafted an extremely intricate plot in a vivid and entirely unique world with something called Distortion, a sort of synthetic energy/ magic source and I. Was Mesmerized. The characters were so well written; complex, flawed, and fully fleshed out. Raimee was probably my favorite character though and she didn’t even have her own POV but honestly they all come with their own strengths and weaknesses and each one helped carry this story. 🙌🏻 I love a good character that is mute and Lindsey crafted a spectacular character with Calver. Each has a journey of healing and discovering what’s worth saving though.

“𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘺 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘮𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘯. 𝘔𝘺 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦, 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯, 𝘪𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘭𝘺.”

I can only imagine that it took Lindsey approximately 15 years and an extensive amount of hours sorting out the storyline from past to present between these characters along with the world building. There’s also a character we hear about throughout, Fankalo, that I was SHOCKED to learn more about in the end! It’s written like a true tapestry with the fate of several characters in the mix.

“𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘰𝘧 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯: 𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘦. 𝘐𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘭𝘢𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘪𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘢 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘢 𝘨𝘶𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘭.”

“𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘺 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘮𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘯. 𝘔𝘺 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦, 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯, 𝘪𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘰𝘯𝘧𝘭𝘺.”

If you like action, a political plot line with a unique world and magic system, morally grey characters, and an intricate story that binds together multiple stories across several timelines, this is the book for you!

Book 1 in a dark, political sci-fantasy I was blown away by this unique world which feels like a well rounded fantasy setting but with sci-fi tech that weaves into the world seemlessly. With three unique POV’s this story unfolds, their threads of fate never quite touching and it was intriguing trying to figure out just how their lives would intersect.

And I have to say that where other books fall short with this, Lindsey’s tale used this to it’s advantage. There were many times I gasped when one POV revealed information that would effect one of the others lives, secrets one character would never know but now the reader was privy too.

While having these three POV’s can be confusing, in this story each character was unique and distinct that it was easy to pick up their story threads again and dive into the trials they faced. That and I couldn’t hold back my excitement for when they lives finally began to converge.

Calver was my favorite of the three, the unredeemable martyr who puts the mission above everything until a refugee saves his life and he offers her shelter. Watching Calver’s pain and growth, the hardships of his life and the cruelty of his childhood was heartbreaking and yet to watch him come to life and have a reason to live again for more than the cause was wonderful. To see him start to break down the walls of being just a weapon to be used, and discover his humanity once more.

POV? 3rd person past tense with 3 POV’s

Will it make you cry? It doesn’t have some very heart wrenching moments

Romance? Yes, but only minor subplot

Humor? A few quips

YA/NA? This is firmly adult due to the themes as well as the maturity of the characters**

Fight Scenes? Several and they are quite unique as they combine both fantasy and sci-fi weapons.

Soft/Hard magic? Hard - though there is little magic in this world. One of the characters has some magical abilities but these are rare.

This review is also featured on Behind the Pages: A Distortion of Fate

Thank you to M.J. for providing me with a copy of this book! I voluntarily leave this review!

M.J. Lindsey weaves a story with complex characters, blending past and present to show how their lives have led to their current predicaments. Each has suffered loss and betrayal in different ways. Calverous, the boy who discovered a plot that crippled him for life and tore away all he once knew of his world. Niklaus, the noble whose ambitions clouded his judgment and destroyed those close to him. Attilatia, the girl who stretches the ability of distortion and seeks to find a cure for what tore away her family.

The world readers will enter is dark and teeming with those who seek power and influence despite the consequences to others. This is not for those seeking a light read. To pick up A Distortion of Fate means immersing oneself in ever growing lore, politics and history of a world in which atrocities were committed. And meeting those who may be the only ones possible to begin healing the ill gotten gains.

A Distortion of Fate is heavily focused on the development of characters, and politics also plays a key role. They serve to push characters forward or backward on their chosen paths. Influencing from afar and twisting the story in unpredictable ways The point of views draws ever closer as the story progresses, yet still remain far enough apart that readers will be eagerly awaiting the next novel not to mention the unexpected twist at the very end that will leave readers demanding more. Readers who enjoy complex fantasy plots and characters must read A Distortion of Fate.

A distortion of fate is a puzzle just waiting to be solved!
I LIVE for books that aren’t over-explained, the ones that throw you in the deep end and you have no choice but to sink or swim!
books like this make me really think, make you analyse every chapter, question every other sentence. For it all to come together so perfectly, it gave JUST ENOUGH for those OMG moments, but also leaves you Reeling & wanting more!

It is set in a dystopian Esque world on the brink of war. There’s political intrigue, conspiracies, cover ups and lots of secrets and mystery!
The magical system is really intriguing as it’s science x technology x synthetic magic and a very limited number of people who truly understand it’s capabilities and possibilities.

Meg Lindsey expertly writes from 3 main Points of view over timelines spanning decades, and weaves the lives of these characters together in a way that is completely gripping and had me on the edge of my seat!

As Romantasy is my usual genre, you best believe my heart skipped a beat at the slow burn enemies turned friendship turned something more between my two favourite characters. I can’t wait for book 2 and more of their journey ❤️‍🔥

A Distortion of Fate is a political sci-fi story that has some dark themes within it along with multiple POVs.
Sci-fi Fantasy isn't a favorite genre but I was more than willing to read and give an honest review.
At first, it was hard for me to get into the book within the first few chapters but, also the different timelines were a little tricky to keep up with initially but as the story progressed it did get easier. It definitely picks up the more you read getting into the story, some of the world-building and understanding the language in the story.
The world-building was so rich in detail and character were all very unique with complex stories of their own.
I am OBSESSED with Calver. He's such a beautifully broken man that I want to wrap in bubble wrap to keep safe forever.
I loved how strong the female characters were, it makes me enjoy them so much more. I love a strong, independent female lead. 🔥

You'll want to read this if you like:

-Dark sci-fantasy
-Political focused plot (rebellion, espionage, conspiracy)
-Multi POV
-Morally grey MCs, who are irresistibly endearing
-Magic and science, or is it magic vs science?
-Flashback POV chapters that reveal MCs' pasts
-A developing slow burn romance (no spice)

Overall, was a good story and a good way for me to introduce me more sci-fi fantasy into my reads. So now I can’t wait for book 2

Thanks so much to the author for the opportunity to read and review. This is based on a complimentary pre-released copy and the review is voluntary. All opinions are my own.

4.5 stars rounded up.

I really enjoyed this complex high fantasy. I’m normally not one for such an intricately woven story but I really ended up liking it. I loved the world that she created, the action she packed in, and the characters were simply fantastic. I really liked the multiple POV and the time jumps.

I’m not gonna lie I was epically confused the first 30% of the book or so, pretty confused up until about 60% and still low key confused the rest of the time. I would have benefited from a glossary or something. There were a lot of new terms, people, and places, with odd names that were hard to remember, some not being explained until the end.

While this was definitely a throw you in the deep end kind of book, I thoroughly enjoyed trying not to drown. 😆 I always felt immersed in the world even if I wasn’t 100% sure what we were doing there the whole time, being there along for the wild ride was exciting! I’m very much looking forward to the next book in the series!

*edit: she added a glossary!!! 🤩🥳🥳🥳

An intricately layered story of love, loss, betrayal, political scheming, and redemption. It’s told across multiple POV’s and timelines and each one grabs you and refuses to let you go until it all coalesces in an ending that will leave you reaching for the next book immediately. This is a high fantasy story and while there is the embers of a slow burn love story, it’s absolutely not the focus. This is one is for lovers of plot, wrenching emotional epiphanies, and a dash of romance.

I will say that since there is no glossary available and so many uniquely named characters to keep track of I would recommend taking notes when a name is introduced.

A Distortion of Fate is a dark political sci-fantasy novel by M.J. Lindsey. It is the first in the Tapestry series and follows multiple characters across multiple timelines, weaving a dark tale of suspense and intrigue. If someone told me that this novel was written by a seasoned author with multiple award-winning books, I would believe them. A Distortion of Fate is a masterclass of fiction writing.

Each of the characters in A Distortion of Fate feel lifelike. They have flaws and act illogically at times in the way that people often do. They are characters that have been broken and spit out by the brutal world they inhabit, and it is impossible not to root for them. In a multi-POV story, there is a risk that at least one of the characters is a chore to get through, but there is no sign of that here. With every POV change comes a new layer of the intrigue that makes the book very hard to put down.

The plot moves along at a pace that will keep you on the edge of your seat, but doesn’t feel too rushed, and the prose is so elegantly crafted that it’s very easy to get totally lost in the story. As each thread of the story unravels, the revelations compound into a lattice of conspiracy keeps you on the edge of your seat. Lindsey’s style does a wonderful job of conveying the complexity of the world without weighing it down with too much information. Instead of throwing it all out at once, Lindsey weaves the details into the character’s stories, letting things come up naturally as they need to. This is needed, because the world is a brutal one, with inequality, poverty and injustice as constant companions. With the bleakness of the world, it might seem that it would be too heavy, but there’s enough humour placed throughout to break up the dreary day-to-day and provide some relief.

A Distortion of Fate is an absolutely spectacular novel brimming with intrigue and suspense that doesn’t disappoint. I often try to come up with some sort of counterpoint when writing a review, but not once did I think of anything that could have been improved. It was an absolute delight to read this story from start to finish and I look forward to the next in the series.

I received an advanced reader copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.

If you love romantasy with fate, magic, and a slow-burn romance that hurts in the best way—this one’s for you.

The worldbuilding is so good, the stakes are high, and the main character? Fierce, stubborn, and ready to defy destiny itself. The tension, the twists, the found family vibes—ugh, perfection.

If you’re into stories where fate doesn’t play fair and the characters fight like hell to change their future, add this to your TBR immediately.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Let me begin by being completely transparent. It took me a while to get into this book, but that’s not a reflection on the author - it’s just my mixed feelings about fantasy sci-fi stories in general. With that said, as soon as I moved past the perplexing and somewhat awkward start, the narrative started to unfold. As an author of a multi-perspective narrative, I am proud of how well it was executed. The relatability of the characters and the enjoyment derived from their diverse personalities are notable aspects of the story. What I really appreciate is how they seemed like genuine people rather than one-dimensional entities. The plot was intense and well written. It took me a while to get into it, but once I did, it was incredible. If you enjoy sci-fi fantasy, multiple points of view, political undertones, or any combination of these, this book should be at the top of your must-read list when it comes out. M.J. Lindsey is someone who you need to keep on your radar.

When I first got the chance to read A Distortion of Fate, I wasn’t to sure if I would get into it. I like dark fantasy and sci-fi when done right and not littered with cliche things.
Distortion of Fate gave me what I wanted without all the filler and cranked it all up to 10. This is my first book by M.J Lindsey and I have to say I’m hooked. The world building not to mention the pace is great while not overloading you as you go. The depth of her characters are by far a whole new level, as she gives each character life even the ones that fall to less then lucky situations. Not giving any spoilers, read it you’ll know.
This is set to be a series which I’m looking forward to reading more then once. I always have a weird habit of I’m reading series so as each book comes out I’ll reread the previous one in time for the next ones release. This will be one of those that fall into that habit.
To simplyfy things, read the book, it’s well worth the time.

I enjoyed this story! In the beginning I had some confusion & perhaps could have used some definitions for uncommon words/ phrases/ places. This would have likely just helped clear my confusion much quicker and have helped me follow the story easier. However through time in the story the confusion DID clear on its own, & like I previously said- I enjoyed it!

I cannot believe how blown out of the water my expectations were for this book. The story is gripping and keeps you on your toes as the timeliness switches between characters. This is a story which introduces you to the characters and then surprise, here is a plot twist that leaves you with such delight and confusion. Read this book if you are in need of a good meaty read that will keep your attention and make sure you do not put it down until the last page.

I loved this! M.J Lindsey did a fantastic job weaving together 3 distinct povs and multiple time lines into an interesting story that leaves you wanting more. The slow reveals and the threads connecting as the story unfolds were so well done. I liked being dropped right into the story and the complex world building. The first little bit may have you thinking what is going on but I promise it all comes together fantastically. If you like a mix of fantasy and science fiction, flawed characters, tragic backstories, and political corruption then definitely pick up A Distortion of Fate.
