Nevermore: Scary Stories and Tales of the Paranormal and Supernatural

Rate this book
Vultures unearthing a long-buried secret. Dragon blood-ink that demands a heavy price. A nightmarish trip that blurs the lines between heaven and hell. And in the midst of monsters and fiends that creep through the night, sometimes memory is the most haunting ghost of all. These are the kind of tales that await you on the pages of Nevermore.
From the Piney Woods of East Texas comes a chilling anthology that will keep you reading into the darkest hour of the night. Nine authors weave together a menagerie of stories spanning genres and styles, but all involving encounters with the eerie, the supernatural, and occasionally the down-right terrifying.
Whether it’s a wish-granting fish, houses with histories best left buried in the past, or a surprising touch of love amidst the spooky, this collection promises something for everyone. Settle in and prepare to step into a world where the familiar takes on new form, where old lore is reimagined, and where the uncanny lurks in every shadow. – T.A. Freeman

My husband lost me in a poker game to Michael Cassio, a man I've always been afraid to be near. I would have run, but I agreed to it before he did it. There aren't that many hands that could have beat my husband’s flush, and the pot was just so big. What are the odds?
I should have run. - Straight Flush and Stone Walls by J.W. Hale

A howling wind ripped snowflakes from the pines above. She could feel them brush across her cheeks, but winter’s bitter sting did not bother her as it once had.
Another sound rose to meet the wind’s wail, this one tiny and incessant, like the bleating of a little lamb.
“I did not think death would smell like this,” she said. By “this” she meant tinged metallic, slightly sweet, a bit sweaty, but overwhelmingly like life. -
The Dead Mother by T. A. Freeman

You will find a great blend of writing here, people with multiple novels under their belt, some closet writers, such as myself, who only lately have begun to seek publication, and some neophytes, just flexing their newly discovered writing muscles.
We come from many different walks of life and differ in many ways. But we all share a love for writing, and a love for one another. We hope that you will be entertained and amused, hopefully at least a little creeped out, and maybe even downright terrified.
Enjoy! - Michael Huff

Nevermore" is a spine-tingling anthology that plunges readers into a shadow-drenched world of ghostly memories, eldritch horrors, and supernatural phenomena. With contributions from nine diverse authors, this collection offers a hauntingly rich blend of atmospheric storytelling and genre-bending suspense that lingers long after the final page.

From the opening tale involving a high-stakes poker game with a horrifying consequence, to the final chilling echoes of "The Dead Mother," each story is uniquely crafted, yet collectively unified by a palpable sense of dread and unease. Standouts include J.W. Hale’s "Straight Flush and Stone Walls"—a twisted tale of chance and regret—and T.A. Freeman’s "The Dead Mother," which captures the surreal quietness of death in a frozen wilderness with poetic brilliance.

The anthology moves effortlessly between the gothic, the fantastical, and the folkloric. A wish-granting fish, dragon blood-ink, and houses steeped in cursed histories all serve as vehicles to explore deeper themes: grief, guilt, sacrifice, and the fragility of memory. Not every story is overtly terrifying—some sneak up with psychological tension, while others dance at the edges of the bizarre and melancholic.

One of the anthology’s greatest strengths lies in its variety. Readers will encounter seasoned authors alongside emerging voices, each bringing a fresh perspective and narrative style. That mix keeps the reading experience dynamic and unpredictable—some stories may leave you chilled, others contemplative, and a few disturbingly amused.

Ultimately, Nevermore delivers exactly what it promises: an unsettling journey into worlds where the supernatural is real, the past never truly stays buried, and monsters come in many forms—including those within ourselves.

Highly recommended for fans of Shirley Jackson, Neil Gaiman, and lovers of eerie campfire tales. Just don’t read it right before bed—you’ve been warned.

Interesting collection of stories. Some authors are definitely better than others, but observing the variety of writing styles is part of the fun or reading this book.
