The Lost Boys but make it gay with a splatter of dark academia.

Jonathan Evergreen is a talented sophomore at a prestigious, isolated college in Vermont, who dreams of a career in book conservation. But Jonathan’s life isn’t as rosy as it may appear. Disowned by his family after they caught him with another boy, he struggles to overcome heartbreak and support himself through his studies. To make matters worse, his advisor and the only ally in the institution run by old money and family connections mysteriously vanishes, and a new enigmatic professor, Dacian Bathory, takes his place.

Even though Jonathan is instantly drawn to Dacian, feeling a deep, intense connection between them, Dacian’s hot and cold behavior leaves him puzzled. But things change when Dacian unexpectedly helps him secure a job at the college’s Rare Books library from which an antique book recently went missing—a book that Dacian seems to have a deep interest in.

As their attraction grows, sinister events start to unfold around people disappearing in the dead of night, a group of legacies showing signs of increasingly disturbing behavior, and a dead body washing up nearby, completely drained of blood. Plagued by unsettling dreams that feel too close to reality, Jonathan suspects that some of these events might be connected to Dacian.

With the stakes escalating and his own life on the line, can Jonathan unravel the truth about Dacian and confront the darkness before it consumes them both?

The trajectory of this story surprised me deeply, as it shifted dramatically from a high emotional peak to a low that left me feeling disheartened. I found the first part to be incredibly engaging; the dark academic vibe was executed brilliantly, immersing me in an atmosphere filled with tension and intrigue. The palpable chemistry between Jonathan and Dacian was electrifying, making their interactions all the more intense and thrilling. I was captivated by the theme of pinning and unfulfilled longing that seemed to simmer between them, drawing me into their complex relationship.

However, once the second part unfolded, the narrative took a sharp turn into the realm of the supernatural, straying far from the captivating dark academic tone that had initially enthralled me. While I must commend the author for uniquely reimagining Dracula's story, as a Romanian, I have to admit that the overexposure of this particular vampire tale has left me rather weary. I was disappointed to discover who Dacian really was.

Moreover, the intense focus on the supernatural elements began to overshadow the core of the story, which felt out of place compared to the nuanced storytelling of the earlier sections. Of course, the presence of supernatural elements is expected in tales involving vampires, but I yearned for a more subtle approach that would weave those aspects into the fabric of the narrative without overwhelming it.

Once Dacian's past was revealed, he seemed to lose much of his initial allure and became a rather lackluster character in my eyes. Meanwhile, Jonathan started making increasingly foolish decisions, veering into melodrama that didn’t resonate with me at all. The spark that once ignited their relationship fizzled out and never reignited, leaving me feeling dissatisfied. I was particularly frustrated by how rushed their relationship development felt; what began with such intensity and chemistry gradually devolved into a narrative that felt forced and superficial.

By the time the third part arrived, I found the plot derailment to be almost absurd, and it left me feeling utterly betrayed by a story that had so much potential in its early chapters. The ending was particularly infuriating, as it painted their relationship in a one-sided light. It conveyed the impression that Dacian was not as emotionally invested in Jonathan as Jonathan was in him, a dynamic that I utterly despise in romance narratives. I had hoped for a more balanced emotional connection between the two, and the lack thereof left me feeling disappointed and frustrated.

This book was really hard to rate. Honestly, I loved the gothic vibe—it had that perfect mix of dark aesthetics and supernatural feels that just hits differently. But let's chat about some things that left me a little... 🤔

First off, I hated the first half of the book. I think the MMCs only interacted like three times in the first 50%, which made the book really boring for me. I LOVE a good slow burn, but this was not it.

And then there's Dacian. In the beginning, he was super mysterious, but maybe a bit too much? Yeah, we got to know him later, but it was a bit too late for me; I was already disconnected from his character by then.

Now, let’s talk about the mystery. It was VERY predictable. I figured it out the moment I realized there was a mystery to solve. I wanted some twists that kept me guessing, but it was pretty straightforward.

Despite these quirks, I have to say the writing had some serious potential. However, I did catch a lot of telling instead of showing, which kinda pulled me out of the story. It would’ve been nice to feel the emotions and tension more organically, you know?

In the end, though, I still enjoyed the journey, and I think if you’re into a mix of mystery and gothic romance, this one’s worth a shot!

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley, and this is my honest review.

Reading Update:

"Wouldn't it be so rad if someday we could just read stuff off a computer screen and say goodbye to hauling those heavy textbooks around?"
"What about the smell of old paper? Or the cozy feeling you get from holding a real book? You'll never get that from a screen."

Why does it feel like the author is attacking me for reading this on my Kindle? 🤔 😭 Anyway, when @Cara told me I wouldn't stop looking for new ARCs once I got my first one, I should have believed her. This is just one of many currently waiting for me on my Kindle. 😅😭

“I prefer the company of books. It's a perfect relationship, really. A book will always open and let you in. You can close it anytime you wish. There's no need for awkward social interactions, and the words inside won't judge you or ask more of you than you can give.”

𓍢⊹ ࣪ thank you to netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review!

i had a really fun time reading this! the main characters pov and the writing was very easy to follow which made me feel like i sped through the book! this book progressed very slowly and overall a slower book which i didn’t mind because of how easy it was to read!

I loved the aspect of books in this and the main characters love for books made him really likeable, I really liked jonathan’s character!

mystery/plot wise, it was quite predictable but that didn’t take away from my enjoyment!

“Despite my current aversion to people, something in my chest unclenches, endlessly pleased about the prospect of sharing space with him, of being in his company.”

the only critique i have is that i wish there were more interactions with the two main characters, i felt like it would’ve enhanced their relationship and how readers view that relationship!

“During those moments we shared in the library and by the pond, I felt like he was looking right into me—like he could see inside my heart better than anyone I’ve ever met.”

despite the main characters not interacting as much, i did really like them together! now honestly, it kinda felt a bit insta-lovey but i didn’t hate it! they liked each other from the very beginning but got together at the 70% mark so it wasn’t bad!

“…there’s a book in his hand—a fantasy, by the looks of it. This unbelievably attractive man is spending his Saturday night cooped up alone in the house with a book.”

i found dacian’s character quite intriguing at the beginning, he came off as very mysterious and i wanted to know more! however, i felt like there was so much back and forth with him and i could not figure him out at all through most of this! when questions were finally answers i kinda was just like “oh, okay!” and moved on so i don’t know what else to say about him!

“Your heart called out to me, all ten thousand broken shards of it. How could I not answer when suddenly, in a room full of people, I could only hear you?”

i really wish the book would explore more on the “connection” jonathan and dacian had! it was said many times they were connected, but i wish it was explored further! how and why are they connected? why is it rare? etc etc things like that

“Can I ask you something?”
“Yes. Anything,” I reply, and I mean it. He could wish for anything in the world, And I would burn my soul to ash to grant it.

“I want you. All of you. The way you are now and how you used to be. Good and terrible. You know that, right?”

as i mentioned before, i did really love them together!!! i’m honestly sure that if this book had been a little longer and even a bit dragged out, i would’ve loved it!

“In this world of shadows, Dacian is my anchor. If he disappears, I will become unmoored. Lost in the darkness without the light of his eyes to guide me, I may never find myself again.”

another thing i wish was developed further was the ending. it felt so rushed!! i really liked how dacian got jonathan into oxford but i just wish we saw MORE of them together after what happened previously! even an epilogue where we see them together would’ve been nice! it honestly feels like i haven’t completed the book even though there’s no more pages to turn to!

overall, i enjoyed this reading experience, i liked the story, and i’d say i definitely see myself rereading this in the future!

a less heavier Babel when it comes to the intellectuals that is MM, vampire, student/professor, gothic queer literature, dark academia with a sprinkle mystery plot line. Such a cozy read.

This is not a perfect book… but it was a perfect book for me.

Love Immortal is an 80s era, dark academia story, set in a sleepy college town in Vermont.

There, sophomore Jonathan lives a lonely, unassuming life, putting his whole heart into his love of books and his hopes to one day study book conservation at Oxford university.

But, with the new school year comes BIG life changes for Jonathan’s quiet existence.

Something sinister begins to unfold on campus, after a hiker goes missing and, soon after, a member of the kitchen staff shows up dead in what seems to be a ritualistic blood draining.

This rightfully sets Jonathan ill-at-ease, especially because these events align with the arrival of his new gothic-lit professor, Dacian Bathory, who is otherworldly beautiful, poised, and intelligent, at once unnerving and captivating Jonathan to dangerously intense degrees.

Soon, he finds himself at the centre of an inexplicable murder-mystery, drawing irrepressibly closer to Dacian, who awakens his long-dormant heart, all while opening Jonathan’s once-small-world to hauntingly frightening revelations, made up of the kind myths and monsters he’s only ever believed to be fiction.

As a romance, this was the most entrancing slow-burn love story I’ve read all year. Absolutely nothing was rushed here and I loved it. I relished in the perfect pacing and thoughtful relationship progression, and the all-consuming intensity of Jonathan and Dacian’s growing feelings and soul-deep connection.

To be clear, this is a book about VAMPIRES. Particularly, one dark, powerful, deadly, spellbinding vampire, whose folklore and legend were so ingeniously reimagined here—in ways that will likely forever change the way I think of vampires and other vampire fiction in general.

The story had a gothic vibe that I really enjoyed, considering it was set at a college campus in Vermont. The writing was beautifully lyrical and atmospherically haunting; the themes often quite macabre in nature, especially during the more exciting, action-filled scenes of the third act, which fit perfectly in tone with the tale being told.

I simply loved this entire reading experience, connecting easily with the writing and the characters, savouring the imaginative take on vampire lore, and absolutely adoring the powerful love story told between Jonathan and Dacian.

Love Immortal is an instant-favourite of mine—one I look forward to reading again and again.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! <3

This, very unfortunately, didn’t work for me. You would think that a dark academia, vampire romance, set during the late 80s, with inspiration from The Lost Boys, would a fucking great time (I know I was super excited when I read the synopsis). However, I found that I never connected with Jonathan as a main character, nor Dacian as a love interest and I found the dialogue and narrative to be kind of clumsy and stiff.

I enjoyed ‘Us, Et Cetera’ (despite how aggressively bleak it was) so I am shocked that something about how the plot unfolded here just seemed off to me. I haven’t been able to put my finger on what it is exactly that I’ve struggled with, but I think a lot of it comes down to the story doing a lot of ‘telling and not showing’, the world building around the magic of vampires being pretty loosey goosey and conveniently cherry picking elements when needed and the mystery being pretty predictable.

I feel like my apathy for this book can be summed up with the fact that I had to put it down at 96% to go to work and instead of manically finishing it on my lunch break I just didn’t care. Honestly, I think my love of the individual story elements is what kept me engaged enough to finish it off.

That being said, I appear to be in the minority and there are plenty of people this worked for, so perhaps it’s just me, in which case I hope everyone else has a wonderful reading experience with it.

"let me be the keeper of your story. i promise your truth will be safe with me.”

i had a feeling i was going to like this one… i was right!!
this novel follows jonathan evergreen, a young gay man who was recently outed and thus shunned from everyone he knew. set in an old college in vermont during the 80s, it bring you on a journey of love and self discovery (with a bit of mystery mixed in!).

i loved the setting and the characters all felt very 3 dimensional. the themes of book conservation, literature, and the importance of eradicating book burnings are things i feel are very integral to novels, yet not talked about enough so i was so glad to see them in this book!

”that night, in his diary, the count wrote: ‘help me, great shadows, for today i met my own ruin and invited him in.’”

the romance was also very sweet and i loved both main characters a lot <3 this book never felt like it dragged which sometimes tends to happen with books set in a boarding school / college. the writing style was very smooth, easy to follow, and there were a few scenes that had me wheezing crying throwing up!!

all in all, i loved this novel a lot!! <33

"poe himself said that 'if a poem hasn't ripped apart your soul, you haven't experienced poetry,'" he adds soothingly. "great art has that effect on people, mr. evergreen. it brings the things we bury deep within ourselves to light so we can set them free."

The first half of the book - ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The second half - ⭐⭐ barely

Not gonna lie, I'm bummed. I enjoyed myself immensely for the story's first half, I swear. It feels so similar to Twilight (the hoa hoa October/November vibes🍂) BUT set in college and GAY - what's there not to love? And listen, just like Twilight, it's not a literary masterpiece - but I can't deny I loved those books as a fourteen-year-old and that's what mattered.

So, if you go into it for the vamps, academic setting, and the 🍂VIBES🍂? Go for it and enjoy it. It's full of rainy evenings, library of rare books, Gothic literature classes 🖤 Just... don't ruin it for yourself expecting a plot that makes much sense. Or a love interest that's anything more than an eye candy because Dacian Bathory (even the name is 😬) is thoroughly one-dimensional.

The writing itself isn't great, even cringe at times, especially when the author is trying to foreshadow things. It just didn't work the way it was supposed to. The plot in the second half is half-baked at best, and ridiculous at worst.

Jonathan, the MC, could be so damn melodramatic in his head, look - "What if I never see him again? That's worse than being skinned alive by these two bloodthirsty monsters." 👀 Okaaay, get your priorities straight, Hermione.

There's one character that's genuinely good IMO and that's Fiona, Jonathan's friend. Kudos to her. Also, the cover is just ❤️❤️

So! I'm definitely not discouraging anyone from reading this because it had some great elements and I think you might comfortably lose yourself in it if you don't expect a groundbreaking plot 🙏

Screaming from the rooftops this was everything I wanted and more. A great gothic LGBT+ romance fuelled with mystery, tension, a slow burn and professor x student (college).

The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because I would have liked a bit more interaction/relationship development between our MMCs. It was a very very easy book to read (I binged it in a day) and I found the pacing to be done well.

This was gay twilight I’m in love

A pretty campy book set at the end of the 1980s. I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed it - I've had trouble picking up audiobooks lately, so this was a good one to ease back into it.

Was it perfect? No, but it was quite interesting. I thought the finale was pretty brutal and gore-y, didn't expect it to be so intense. I must say it was a tad strange that Dacian was actually Stocker's Dracula, but unlike that novel, this one didn't destroy my home country with inaccuracies. XD (except not sure why Dacic myths were introduced here, they have nothing to do with vampires).

All in all, a pretty entertaining gay vampire book, and I love that it has an open and hopeful ending.

2.5 stars. Don’t get me wrong, I actually did like the writing, however I was bored. I saw some people mentioning that this book was very tell and not show and I could not agree more. I felt like 70% of this book was just reading the main character’s thoughts and not events actually happening.

The whole Clay subplot(?) was a huge part of the first half, then just evaporated the second half. I didn’t feel the chemistry between Jonathon and Dacian so it was hard to get invested in their relationship. I found Jonathan kind of aggravating actually 😭

It was okay but I was ready to just finish it, I think this book would make a cool movie though!

He could toss me out the window, and in this madness, I’d crawl right back to him, broken legs and all.

In this professor/student, forbidden love, gay vampires, dark academia story…

Do I need to say more or did that convince you? Lmao

It’s futile trying to connect when you’re forced to hide major parts of yourself.

3.5 stars

This book is set in the late 80s when it was hard for LGBTQ+ people like Johnathan to exist, to live happy, open lives (still hard now in places, don't forget that). His previous relationship went horribly wrong but now he’s at college (well, his second year) and he’s, um, moving on. But not really, he’s still haunted by dreams of his first love until some dreamy scary wolves come and save him (this makes sense, right?).

He wants me to see him? Oh, Dacian, how could I possibly see anyone else?

Enter Professor Bathory, mysterious, dark-clothing-wearing, gothic loving, and much to Johnanthan’s annoyance, Johanthan-hating?

And so begins the story of how Johnathan starts working in the collections library (think rare books, we stan) and looking for a book thief. But also, there are people going missing and others turning up dead.

I dunno how the fuck to describe this book. None of that made sense lmao

That was when I learned that people pick their own versions of history to ensure they aren’t blamed for the outcome.

It was dark. It was spooky. It was swoony.

“Don’t ever underestimate human stupidity, Jonathan."

I was pretty invested for the first 50% and then I realized that Johnathan was an idiot.

Honestly, it ended up ruining the book for me, it was a solid 4.25 stars until I realized that I actually didn’t like the main character lmao. I kept forgetting that he wasn’t like 16 years old, but 20ish, since he read so young, and the same for Dacian, who’s centuries old, but kinda still a child?? Please help.

“But you still expect him to make good, morally correct choices even though he is not a good person?”

Anyway, the mystery was no mystery at all, except to Johnathan, and the bad guys were comically bad, re. over the top. Despite the lower rating, there’s nothing inherently wrong with this book, so don’t discount it, I just didn’t love it.

Thank you to Coloured Pages Book Tours and the author for this eARC and finished physical copy!!

I am absolutely destroyed and can’t stop crying now that I’ve finished my arc of Love Immortal by Kit Vincent. This was an easy 5 stars!

It’s perfect. There’s so much nuance and complexity and underlying messages amidst this breathtaking m/m vampire romance, with an alternative 1980s, academic, Vermont-in-the-fall setting.

I actually dragged this one out because I didn’t want it to be over (and also because I added so many highlights and notes 😅).

Not only is Jonathan and Dacian’s story painfully beautiful, but Love Immortal also highlights deeper issues like book banning and queer erasure in history/literature. I am just obsessed with this book, and I refuse to shut up about it!

Kit is an autobuy author, forever and always. I had been anxiously awaiting this book’s release since they announced it, and it did not disappoint!

Thank you to NetGalley and Kit Vincent for the arc in exchange for my honest review.

Dark Academia at its best!

An atmospheric, passionate spin on the original vampire lore!

The immersive worldbuilding teleports the reader to 1980s Vermont where Jonathan is trying to rebuild his life after a tragic and sad turn of events surrounding his high school boyfriend. Jonathan is sad and haunted by his last. He is also nerdy and stubborn and wants to be loved, and his heart is in the right place - a main character you fervently root for!

Dacian's mysterious aura is the perfect blend of dark attraction, beautiful and foreign, cold and threatening. His connection with Jonathan is electric: hot and sparkling and fragile.

The inclusion of historical characters and the queer twist on the most famous vampire story adds to the Gothic vibe and the whole setting of the story.

There is violence, gore, vengeful retribution and darkness, alongside lust, passion and real, deep connection, all packaged in a perfect dark academia background!

Kit Vincent, consider me a fan!

It’s no secret at all that I adore all things Vampire! This book was so good - a gothic nightmare set in the 1980’s at a secluded college in Vermont… missing people, nightmarish shadows, and a mysterious literature professor. I loved it!

Jonathan Evergreen is a student at the prestigious Camden University. He’s run away from his previous life after being forcibly outed and losing his boyfriend, the same one that haunts his nightmares. He’s studying to be a book conservationist, but when he finds his favourite professor has left he’s concerned his studies will be affected… until he meets new teacher, Dacian Bathory.

Dacian is ethereally beautiful and immediately steals Jonathan’s attention. But in the first class, he seems to hate Jonathan… but that doesn’t last for long and soon Dacian is a recurring feature in Jonathan’s dreams.

But students are going missing and Jonathan’s dreams are becoming increasingly more disturbing. Will Jonathan figure out what is going on before the whole University descends into madness?

This book draws on traditional gothic storytelling, with mystery and madness, but with a fun 1980’s setting! I loved Jonathan and Dacian and the interlinking of a very famous gothic story… IYKYK!!

Read Love Immortal for:
✨ Vampires!!
✨ Gothic storytelling traditions
✨ Professor x Student
✨ Age gap (because vampires, duh!)
✨ Isolated college setting
✨ Historical 1980’s setting
✨ Descent into madness
✨ Shedding light on a famous vampire

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Kit Vincent for an ARC of this amazing book! It’s available 22nd October 2024 🦇

Many thanks to the Netgalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I'm rounding this up to three stars as this may be a case of just not the right book for me, but I honestly didn't enjoy all that much in this book. The premise was very promising and had a lot of themes that I usually enjoy reading, but somehow it didn't manage to deliver on any of those points and also added things that just didn't add anything of value for me. Purely in terms of writing though, apart from a few typos, this was definitely not poorly written.

Somewhat a pro and a con, the pacing was quite fast which let me fly through this book, and yet it felt oddly uneventful. It took quite a while before anything happened and that would have been ok had it been more atmospheric. But ultimately it felt very devoid of any suspense and I largely felt like I am just reading any old daily life in an academic setting. And mind you, I enjoy school settings with all the clichés that often come with it, but I think what really dragged this aspect down was both the main character Jonathan and the author's voice slipping through.

I did not like Jonathan. I found him very obnoxious and judgmental. Yes, he has had bad things happen to him and, while not spelt out that way, is most likely working through trauma. But there was something about the way his narrative went and how he commented on other people that rubbed me the wrong way and negated most of the sympathy I'd have otherwise had for him. I also felt like a lot of his social commentary was very much 2024, hence why I felt like it was more the author's voice than Jonathan's. And that was another issue for me: I see little reason why this was set in the 80s because absolutely nothing about it felt like it was. With perhaps the exception of the mention that the new A Nightmare on Elm Street movie is airing, nothing added to the feeling that this is set four decades before it was written. While the subject matter is different (e.g. to fantasy), I couldn't help but compare this to Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda - this may seem like a far fetched comparison as the plot isn't exactly comparable, but I do think they both tap into similar social criticism and attempted to convey similar messages. The difference was that the latter has a likeable main character and it was more subtle, as in you could pick up the ideas from characters' actions and interactions, whereas in Love Immortal, it felt very much like tell and not show.

I kept holding out for the romance or mystery to kind of save this for me. I love a good slow burn and given the circumstances, I would have expected this one to be just that. While there isn't much romantic interaction so to speak of until about half way into the book, it still felt like quite a rushed job and I felt absolutely no chemistry between them. From Jonathan's part I can at least gather that he finds Dacian attractive looking but we know absolutely nothing about why Dacian might like him and there was also no spark that made me think, yes this is working.

The mystery wasn't much of a mystery after all and the sudden extreme shift to fantasy and gore in the last few chapters felt odd compared to the otherwise almost mundane feeling rest of the book. Also there were way too many dream sequences. Rather than dreams and petty school squabbles, I just kept waiting for the actual plot to move along already. Also

Last but not least, what I did like were the two references to A Nightmare on Elm Street and Fiona - she was a pretty awesome character and an even better friend. I daresay I'd have enjoyed this book a lot more had she been the main character. I also liked the ending - a little open but sweet and satisfying. As mentioned above, this might all really be a me thing and others have clearly enjoyed it so if the tropes sound like your cup of tea, by all means, give it a chance - it just simply wasn't for me, but I appreciate the opportunity to read this!

OK, if you want vampire romance with ALL the vibes, THIS is the book y'all. I've been on the hunt for a swoony, atmospheric vampire book all spooky season, and I found everything I was looking for here. It's set at a small college in the 1980s, and you end up totally immersed in New England fall/dark academic vibes. Add in an enigmatic new professor teaching gothic lit and all kinds of weird things happening around campus, and it's literally the PERFECT fall read.

I loved Jonathan SO much y'all. The book is single POV, so we see everything through his eyes, and he's just such a sweetheart. His backstory with his ex boyfriend and the letters and his sense of loneliness hurts, but I loved reading about his yearning to preserve old books (which, honestly, was so freaking cool to learn about). He falls HARD and fast for his professor Dacian Bathory, helped along by some pretty vivid dreams (but are they really?), and the slow burn between them paired up with the very gothic atmosphere had me on the edge of my seat. In addition, I loved all of the details about the real life Dracula, and, once Dacian and Jonathan finally come together, the absolutely swoony romance. There is SO MUCH ACTION at the end of this one after the slow buildup in the first half, and OMG THAT ENDING! It immediately had me DMing Kit to ask if there was a potential follow-up, because I NEED more. It's not a cliffhanger per se, and there is an HEA, but I would LOVE to read more about these characters.

I listened to this one as an ALC, and OMG, I'd forgotten how much I LOVE James Fouhey's voice. While he's excellent as Jonathan, he had me straight up fanning myself with his English accent for Dacian. Definitely a favorite, HIGHLY recommend the audiobook my friends!

This is my first book by Kit Vincent, and it will definitely not be my last. Incredible storytelling and lush writing, I absolutely cannot wait to read more. Thank you to Kit and Colored Pages Book Tours for the opportunity to read this one!

Jonathan’s life has not been easy. His family abandoned him the moment he came out and he lost his first love.

Now starting fresh at a prestigious isolated college in Vermont, he hopes to be able to finish his studies and get his dream job.

But this year, something will change. A book has been stolen from the Rare Book’s college library. A new mysterious professor has been hired, Dacian Bathory. And Jonathan will learn that vampires are real.

As Jonathan and Dacian get closer to each other and they work together to recover the stolen book, an unexpected turn of events will put them in grave danger.

This book was a light retelling of Dracula and that is something that I really cherished. The dark academia setting worked so wonderfully for this story and I loved all the talk about preserving rare books.

Now, the horror is on the lighter side as well as the romance. I actually really appreciated that it was a slow burn romance and the main focus was not just on Jonathan and Dacian’s relationship.

This book had a fantastic gothic atmosphere, a great pacing and the writing was beautiful and haunting. It had some tense and action packed scenes and it reflected on what it means to be immortal and how that changes your perspective on life as well as love.

Definitely a great vampire book that takes something from the classic Dracula story and adds its own twist. If you love vampires and dark academia, this book was made for you.

I’ll admit, this book was a slow burn at the start—I even considered giving up on it. But something about it hinted at untapped potential, so I decided to stick with it. And wow, am I glad I did! Around the 45% mark, it completely sucked me in. From that point on, I was hooked and stayed up way past midnight to finish it. Totally worth the sleep deprivation.

It’s often described as “gay Twilight,” and I can see why—it definitely has those Twilight vibes, especially in the first half. But it also puts a fresh spin on the classic Dracula story, which I thought was a really cool twist. Oh, and that cover! Seriously, I’m obsessed. I’m already thinking about checking out the author’s other works to see if anything else catches my eye.

What a wild ride!

Okay, I’m still crying at that ending so bear with me as I collect myself. WHEW.

I really wasn’t sure what to expect going into LOVE IMMORTAL but wow, I had so much fun!!!! Set in the 80s at Camden College in Vermont, LOVE IMMORTAL puts a really fun and queer twist on Dracula. Or Dacien, as he prefers.

What a storyyyyyy. Ugh, I loved the college in a tiny town backdrop, the 80s time period, all of it. The characters were incredible, the writing was wonderful, and it was just an all around good time!

Now I want my own vampire literature professor. I mean, come onnnn, SWOON. I would’ve been right there along everyone else who was drooling over him. Jonathan was soooo correct to lock that down.

What a great read!

Four and a half stars. Enjoyed this considerably more than I thought i would, since reading a book with no knowledge of what you are going to read can be dangerous but totally paid off. Just a tidy amount of spice which leaves you wanting more.

Dracula is one of my favorite books, and I enjoyed the inspo here, enough that it probably smoothed over some issues that might have normally irritated me more. I don't understand the choice to set it in the 1980s (felt like it was just setting up the author for anachronistic language etc.), and the plot was pretty obvious and dragged in places. I enjoyed the first part in particular, which set things up nicely, but I didn't feel like the rest of the book really delivered on the potential. Once the supernatural aspects are confirmed, I feel like the book lost a bit of its edge. There was some great potential, and I'd be open to reading more from this author, but didn't quite hit the mark for me (and I think the rating would be lower, but I did enjoy the Vibes.)

I genuinely loved this book.
I consumed it very quickly over a matter of a day or two.
I love the dark academia/ 80s vibes.
I like Jonathan and his backstory makes me so sad.
Damian could have used more background info imo.

The author points out that Jonathan and Dacian have a bond but never touches on it in the book. Damian also invades Jonathan's dreams/ nightmares and it's just never touched on or talked about.

The first 30% of the book is Jonathan listing after Dacian while Dacian doesn't seem to even care and it's never addressed.

Even with all the lack of backstory or descriptions I really really loved this book.....
Until the end. The ending totally ruined the entire book for me.

I went from wanting to buy the physical copy to keep on my shelf to being sad just looking at the digital.veraion because I will probably never read it again.

I like having more closure in my Romance books and this was not it.

I still recommend people read this because the majority of the book was really really good.

“Love Immortal” by Kit Vincent took me on a haunting, seductive journey that I won’t soon forget. From the first pages, I was captivated by the gothic allure and eerie atmosphere of an isolated Vermont college. Jonathan Evergreen, a bookish sophomore with dreams of preserving rare texts, becomes entangled with the mysterious Professor Dacian Bathory, and their magnetic connection was like a siren call. The story is a love letter to books and libraries, layering the warmth and nostalgia of these spaces with a creeping dread and dark romance that builds beautifully with each chapter. Every scene in the Rare Books library felt like a reverent homage to the power and mystery of ancient stories, a perfect backdrop for a gothic vampire romance that knows exactly how to tease out suspense.

What makes “Love Immortal” unforgettable is the angsty, beautifully tragic connection between Jonathan and Dacian. Both are outsiders scarred by a world that can’t accept them, and their relationship feels like two lost souls finally finding a home in each other. The contrast of Jonathan's youthful longing with Dacian’s ancient sorrow added a deep sense of yearning that made every stolen glance and quiet conversation electric. The suspenseful mystery surrounding the series of drained corpses on campus kept me completely engrossed, and with every twist, I found myself questioning Dacian's motives. Each revelation about Jonathan and Dacian’s pasts felt heartbreakingly real, making their bond that much more profound. The fact that this story unfolds in the 80s adds such a rich layer of atmosphere, making every dark hallway and shadowy corner come to life in a way that’s both nostalgic and chilling.

The writing style is stunning, mixing gothic horror with moments of aching romance, and a dash of steam that felt so well-placed and beautifully written. Vincent’s prose swept me away, especially during those intimate scenes that tread the line between longing and restraint. And the audiobook! The narrator’s voice was incredibly seductive, embodying Dacian’s allure with a tone that perfectly captured the story’s brooding essence. “Love Immortal” is a delicious, dark academia experience that fans of vampires, mystery, and romantic fantasy will fall head over heels for. Just a small warning: the book does deal with some heavy themes, including an off-page suicide, but the story’s depth and beauty make it well worth the emotional ride.

This is the kind of book where I feel like I was taught something while reading. There is so much information in this book. If you love gothic literature and history I feel like you would enjoy this. Very interesting take on a classic vampire story.

There is a very slow build up of the two main characters, Jonathan and Dacian, and lots of world building. There is a hint of the forbidden with these two, as Jonathan is a student and Dacian is a new professor, but it never really had that edge that a lot of forbidden romance has. I think this was relatively low angst. Its just a beautifully written love story, with an old school vampire twist.
