Oddly good…
The writing is solid. Characters have enough of what makes them more than veneers; motivation and values. In a tale about a bunch of generally pompous “bad” folks at the highest levels, while the “heroes” are essentially picking the lesser of evils -makes it odd. I appreciate the mixed messages on love and duty too in this novel. I recommend it for a solid sword and fantasy tale with the added layer of national intrigue via civil war.
