Dollycas's Thoughts

Photographer Bobbie Brooks needs a new start. Her husband's sudden death a little over a year ago has been so hard to accept. She wants, no needs, to escape her grief. Leaving her life in Boston behind she hopes she will find a way forward in Stonebridge, Vermont nestled within the Green Mountains. It is where her big sister has made her home with her family. She has found a home for herself and Darcy, her yellow Labrador retriever on Main Street with a cute barn that will make a perfect photography studio. Her first step in making her dream of turning her hobby into a profession is starting the Keep It Snappy Shutter Club. The club includes her sister, her best friend Rose, who owns the Rosebud Cafe, Tiffanee Jacobson who is in her mid-30s, pretty brash, and dating Rose's ex-husband, Jackson Gilbert, "an outdoorsy Vermonter with a flair of his own",  and Penny  Wright, the youngest member of the group and the first to join. Their first photo shoot is a covered bridge, but Tiffanee fails to meet up with the rest of the group.

The group split up at the bridge anxious to get their unique clicks. Bobbie takes time to check on each one but she is still worried about the missing photographer. As dusk was falling she starts to take some pictures of her own. She gets an eerie feeling and notices a large bundle. Rushing to the motionless shape, she finds Tiffannee face down on the rocky riverbank.  To make matters worse, a scarf she had lost earlier is found at the scene of the crime making her the prime suspect.

Bobbie decides to use her unique talents for observation to find the real killer and she asks the club to help. Turns out there are a plethora of suspects and she believes the pictures from the victim's camera can provide clues to bring the guilty party into focus. Can they clear Bobbie's name? And get justice for Tiffanee? Or will the killer take the final shot?

Kara Lacey introduced a group of very interesting characters in her first Camera Club Mystery. Protagonist Bobbie Brooks immediately captured my heart. While I haven't lost a husband, I have lost an adult son and know the pain that grief can bring and the way it shakes your whole world. I was happy to see her move to be close to her sister and her family. Alicia and Nate were there for her the whole way. As was her friend Rose. The closeness of these relationships was so heartwarming and genuine. Bobbie also has a daughter Emma away at school and everything about that relationship feels true to life. Readers are also introduced to a variety of Stonebridge residents, all pretty typical of what you find in any small town. I used to have a neighbor very much like Bobbie's Lester Miller, so I could relate there too.

Ms. Lacey has crafted a compelling mystery. Secrets and lies abound as Bobbie tries to follow the clues while Detective Cram keeps his focus entirely on her. Things get shaken up when someone else is murdered sending Bobbie's theory out the window. I enjoyed how photos,  her knowledge, and her observation skills helped her bring all the pieces together. That and a little intuition set up a dramatic showdown followed by an exciting rescue and takedown.

I do find the camera club theme very appealing. Like Penny, my camera is my phone. My husband, on the other hand, has taken his photography hobby to a new level with multiple lenses. Maybe we can both learn something from Bobbie.

Caught on Camera is a very entertaining whodunit that has given this series a fantastic start. A strong protagonist, engaging supporting characters, and a top-notch mystery laced with humor, all set in an intriguing small town will delight cozy lovers. The last few paragraphs give readers a little snippet of what Bobbie has in her future. I am keen to see what adventure she and her camera club catch with their lenses next.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.

Photographer Bobbie Brooks has been in Stonebridge, Vermont for a year, since her husband died suddenly. She's settling in, spending time with her sister, working on her photography, and being part of a new camera club. At the first meeting, one of the members doesn't show up, and Bobbie finds her body on a photography walk. She decides to work to solve the mystery with the help of the camera club.

I wanted to read this book because I love cozy mysteries, am interested in photography, and I will admit, the cover is very appealing. I love mysteries that feature a dog or cat, and Darcy, Bobbie's dog, is front and center on the cover!

This is the first book in a new series and I am already looking forward to reading the future books! I really like Bobbie. She's smart and her photographer's eye turns out to be a real help in solving the mystery.

The mystery is well paced, the clues are plentiful, and there are several good suspects for Bobbie to investigate.

I found the photography details in the book interesting and they added a lot to the storytelling for me.

I also enjoyed the small town of Stonebridge and the friends and acquaintances Bobbie makes there.

I recommend Caught on Camera for other cozy readers, and especially for anyone who also has an interest in photography.

This was read as an ARC. I was captivated by this cozy mystery! The author created such relatable and endearing characters. The sister dynamics were particularly heartwarming, and the mother-daughter bond felt authentic.

The mystery was cleverly crafted with enough twists and turns to keep me guessing until the very end. The climactic scene was just the right amount of suspense, ensuring a satisfying and enjoyable read.

Small-town vibes, a close-knit family, and murder make this a perfect cozy mystery!

Caught On Camera is the first book in author Kara Lacey’s new Camera Club Mystery series, and it is a wonderful debut displaying all the hallmarks of what I love in a good cozy. With an engaging and relatable main character, a quaint, homey Vermont setting that had me considering travel plans, and a baffling murder, I was quickly invested and absorbed by the story.

The book’s protagonist and soon-to-be amateur sleuth is Bobbie Brooks, a recent widow and transplant to the small town of Stonebridge, Vermont, from big-city Boston. Early on, we learn about the unexpected death of her husband and can almost feel her lingering grief and need for a change. Stonebridge has been home to her older sister, Alicia, since her marriage to a local attorney. Bobbie thought it would be a great place to start over and, hopefully, open her own photography business. Wanting to become more of a part of the community, she, along with Alicia and her friend, café owner Rose, formed a photography club. Their first photo outing as a club ends tragically when Bobbie discovers the body of one of their members at their chosen shoot location. The story makes an abrupt left turn when Bobbie goes from primary witness to primary suspect.

Considering the lead detective’s attitude and arrogance, Bobbie can’t help but get involved in investigating to clear her name, and she’s good at it, noticing things at the crime scene that the police overlooked. Thankfully, she and her sister have a close and supportive relationship, and Alicia’s attorney husband, Nate, comes in very handy when the detective’s questioning goes from fact-finding to accusation.

I appreciate it when the murder occurs early in a mystery, as oftentimes, too much exposition upfront gets really tedious really fast. Readers who feel the same way will not be disappointed here as the future victim is introduced within the first couple of pages and dispatched only a couple of pages later. She’s also a delightfully catty and unpleasant woman, although, of course, undeserving of being murdered. I enjoyed how the author developed the town and its residents as Bobbie works through her investigation. Each shopping stop or coffee break introduced a few more locals and laid out the town while Bobbie gathered clues or pieces of information needing to be checked out.

While Bobbie, Alicia, and the remaining members of the Keep It Snappy Shutter Club developed a list, I had my own potential suspects as well. The exciting resolution is good, and armchair detectives will be able to pick out clues that lead to the truth.

I recommend CAUGHT ON CAMERA to cozy mystery readers, especially those with a fondness for Vermont settings and labrador retrievers.

If I lived in Stonebridge, Vermont, I would want to be a member of the Keep It Snappy Shutter Club! Caught on Camera is the debut cozy mystery by Kara Lacey.

Forty-something Bobbie Brooks is ready to start a new chapter in her life and moves to Stonebridge. Bobbie is familiar with Stonebridge and already has some family and friends there. Her dream is to have her own photo studio, so she starts the Keep It Snappy Shutter Club to get the community excited about photography. During their first club outing, Bobbie discovers a body of one of her club members. She is determined to find out what happened.

It was fun and interesting to read about photography and all that goes along with that. Bobbie is so relatable. She is trying to make the best decisions for herself and showed a lot of growth in the story. Bobbie has a great relationship with her sister Alicia and her best friend Rose. The three get into some pretty funny situations. Bobbie gets to learn a lot about the residents of her new town, not everything is good. I loved how she used her photography skills to help figure out what really happened the night of their club outing.

This was a fantastic start to a new cozy mystery series. I am looking forward to reading more about Bobbie and her friends.

Thank you to the author for the digital review copy, and for letting me share my early thoughts on Caught on Camera.

CAUGHT ON CAMERA by Kara Lacey
The First Camera Club Mystery

Widow Bobbie Brooks has left the big city of Boston for small town rural Vermont. While her sister and a good friend are neighbors Bobbie still feels like an outsider. Hoping to fit in to the community she starts a photography club. But their first outing turns disastrous when Bobbie discovers the body of one of its members. Thinking it had to be a tragic accident Bobbie nonetheless feels something is off. What she didn't expect was murder, and that she is not only the main suspect, but the town pariah as well.

CAUGHT ON CAMERA is a story about starting over and finding yourself. It serves as a reminder that you can't control everyone in your life and sometimes you need to step back. Starting new is always a challenge, especially when you're older. Making new friends, being part of a group, these things somehow become more difficult as Bobbie discovers. Although she is starting fresh in a new state, she's lucky in that she already has supports in place, her sister and best friend. I really like her sister, Alicia, a smart woman of many talents. I know I'd like to try some of her cheese and jams! One minor character who really annoyed me was Emma. She really needs to stop being so needy and grow up. Jeesh. She acted more like a whiny spoiled brat that a young adult starting a career. Darcy, of course, is a dream.

The mystery was interesting, as was the photography theme. I enjoyed seeing the possible motives as well as the interesting behaviors of the suspects. After I finished the book I realized all the subtle clues that were carefully placed throughout the story. Tiny, seemingly insignificant things, that weren't really part of the plot but were there, like little beacons, their true meaning only coming through once the mystery was solved.

Complicated relationships and attention to detail make CAUGHT ON CAMERA a compelling start to a new series.

When her husband died, professional photographer Bobbie Brooks fled the clamor of city life for a quaint Vermont village where she sought peace. Yet her new start begins to go sour when one of her fellow club members for her camera club is found dead beneath the town's historic covered bridge.

Bobbie snaps her camera until the scarf she is wearing at the time is found at the crime scene, and afterward she trades her camera for a magnifying glass and becomes an amateur detective. Her camera club friends help her sift through photos from the victim's camera, as she sifts through the victim's photos and all of her sea of suspicious townsfolk who all seem to have motives and the opportunity to commit the crime.

A well-paced mystery that gets into the underbelly of small-town life with its secrets and deceptions, this book is packed with the sort of photojournalism and photography elements that have come to be a Keene staple. They add humor, Bubbi, and support as they help her with her investigation. Being able to connect photography to the story cleverly and also come from the developing Bobbie who’s, like, trying to take the perfect shot. She's so hellbent on trying to get the perfect shot to become a Sports Illustrated cover star, but also hellbent on getting the killer before she becomes the next victim.

Thank you to Lori from Great Escapes Book Tours and the author for allowing me to read and review this book.

Caught on Camera is the debut book in Kara Lacey's A Camera Club Mystery and it is really enjoyable! The characters are likable and the cozy mystery kept me guessing, although I suspected the culprit. Bobbie Brooks recently moved to Stonebridge, VT after her husband's death to open a photography studio. She starts a photography club, Stonebridge Keep It Snappy.Shutter Club. The members are involved with helping her solve the mystery. Bobbie's sister Alicia Crowley and best friend Rose are in the club. They are wonderful characters and great sidekicks. The club's first project is taking pictures at the covered bridge but Bobbie finds a dead body and it is one of the club members. Bobbie ends up the prime suspect. Detective Cram is convinced she was involved so she needs to clear her name. Bobbie has an adult daughter Emma in Boston where she used to live and they both miss her deceased husband Dan. This adds to the story as well as her relationships with Alicia and Rose. Once the intro was set up, the book picked up pace and was hard to put down, culminating in an exciting ending! This was a very enjoyable cozy mystery! Caught on Camera is a debut mystery by author Kara Lacey in a new cozy mystery series. The amateur sleuth is photographer Bobbie Brooks, a recent widow who is still struggling with her husband's death. Bobbie, her sister, her best gal pal, and some others have formed a new hobby group called the Keep It Snappy Shutter Club.

Bobbie, who loves photography, meets the rest of the club at a covered bridge near their home in Stonebridge, Vermont, to take some photos. Unfortunately, it doesn't go well. Bobbie stumbles across the body of one of the members, and mystery ensues.

Thanks to her photography and observation skills, Bobbie is uniquely positioned to solve the mystery. The author, Kara Lacey, does a great job with the mystery. The clues are there for the reader to solve the mystery along with the sleuth, but they are well-laid and far from obvious. The resolution makes sense and creates a satisfying end to the story.

I liked everything about this mystery, from the setting to the hook to the characters. Kara Lacey's great writing ties it all together really well. I will most definitely continue with this series and look forward to future books.

Disclaimer: I received an advanced reading copy in exchange for a review. This did not impact my opinion of the story. I genuinely liked it.

This series is off to a good start with this book. I really enjoyed reading it. The characters were great and I was guessing all through the book as to who was the culprit, and never did get it right.

We start off with Bobbie Brooks recently having moved to Stonebridge, Vermont after her husband passes away. She wants to open a photography studio and starts up a photography club the Keep it Snappy Camera Club. They have about 6 people in the club and on one of their adventures to take pictures one of the members is killed. Bobbie is the one to discover the body and checks for a pulse. Detective Cram suspects that Bobbie is the killer and keeps hounding her to get a confession. He questions everything she did and all that she says. Earlier in the day Bobbie had realized her scarf was missing and that scarf was found at the murder scene.

The camera club is enlisted to help Bobbie try to find the killer. There is no shortage of suspects, secrets, lies and blackmail is discovered. Then there is a gun discovered in Bobbie's yard. Is it the murder weapon? Did Bobbie commit the murder or is she innocent?

I got this book from Book Sirens and will be happy to leave my review.

I am an ARC reader and this is my honest opinion. This book fairly crackles along. The basic story is of a relatively recent widow moving from her home in Boston to the small town in Vermont where her sister lives and she and her late husband have friends. Starting a camera club and having her own photography studio are her ambitions for her new look life. Fine and good, until the discovery of a body. Enter the detective who reminded me of every hopeless detective in books and comedy film. He is so determined that Bobbie is the killer that Bobbie, her sister and her best friend try to investigate for themselves, during which there is at least one comic scene. As the events leading to the murder unfold, the suspects mount up, there's another murder and Bobbie has a side problem in Boston, while Detective incompetent does his best not to find the murderer. A dramatic, nightmare climax with Darcy the dog a hero, a handsome newcomer and we're all set to go for the next adventure - which I shall be reading when it appears!

Caught on Camera by Kara Lacey has Bobbie Brooks getting a fresh start in Stonebridge, Vermont. I found the story easy to read with varied pacing. Bobbie is adjusting to life after the death of her husband. I could relate to Bobbie wanting a fresh start after the loss of a loved one. It is hard to move on when you are surrounded by memories of the one you lost. I do not blame Bobbie for wanting that house (I wanted it). The murder takes place at the beginning of the book (I thought it was a tad early). Troublemakers do not last long in a cozy mystery. Detective Cram has Bobbie at the top of the top of the suspect list. Bobbie is determined to prove her innocence, and she enlists the help of her fellow Snappy Camera Club members. The victim was not well liked, so there is no shortage of suspects. The group uncovers more than they expected during their investigation. The case has a good wrap at the end. I was not a fan of the cliched detective (I hope he gets the boot and someone more open-minded takes his place). I like the photography information included in the story. I had no idea of all that goes into capturing the perfect photo. Caught on Camera is a cute cozy with a missing scarf, barn renovations, an odd discovery, curious clues, rampant rumors, surprising secrets, and a helpful camera club.

I really enjoyed the book Caught on Camera by Kara Lacey. The book is set in a small-town in Vermont and the main character Bobbie is a widow who is starting her life over after the death of her husband. Bobbie is a photographer and while out on a photoshoot with her camera club they encounter the dead body of a fellow club member. This is the first book in “The Camera Club Mystery Series” and the author does a great job introducing all the characters and their backstory. The murder mystery is filled with many twists and turns and has quite a few possibilities as to who the murderer might be. I really sympathized and could identify with the main character as she tried to adjust to life after the death of her husband, moving into a new town and being the main suspect in a murder investigation. I am excited about this new cozy mystery series and look forward to reading future books.

With it’s well-drawn Vermont setting, and page-turning mystery, Caught on Camara is a must-read debut mystery by Kara Lacey. The novel centers on Bobbie—a forty-six year old Boston native who has recently moved to Vermont after the death of her husband. Her plan is to restart her life by opening a photography business in the picturesque small town where she previously vacationed. As a step toward this goal, she organizes a camera club. However, on the clubs first outing, disaster strikes when a member known for being catty and spying on neighbors is found dead. To make matters worse, the main suspect is Bobbie, and the police have evidence proving her guilt. Filled with quirky characters, danger as well as a rollercoaster ride of emotions, Bobbie’s hunt to prove her innocence and unmask the real killer was a fun and fabulous read. Highly recommended to people who enjoy both cozy and traditional mysteries.

Surrounded by early summer in a charming Vermont village, Caught on Camera is a page-turning mystery with Bobbie Brooks, a determined and wholly likeable sleuth, at the helm.

Bobbie has recently moved to the town where her sister and police detective brother-in-law already live. She's newly widowed and trying to learn to live again around her grief. The local photography club has been her saving grace, so when they stumble on a body during a photo shoot, Bobbie enlists the sharp focus of the other club members to help clear her name when a personal item of hers is found at the murder scene.

I was enchanted by this delightful read and taken by surprise with the various twists and turns in the well-plotted mystery. Cozy mystery fans will love the quirky characters, well placed doses of humor, and a heroine we can root for. I hope this will be a long-running series!

Quick blurb: Bobbie recently lost her husband and decides to leave Boston for Vermont where she is in a camera club. Charming town at first, until she stumbles upon the body of one of the women in the club down by the river. This leads Bobbie to investigate to see whether this was an accident or foul play and she will discover some secrets along the way to find the truth.

This book was engaging and I loved the way Kara built the world around the main character. There were several potential suspects, and that kept me guessing throughout the book. I enjoyed following Bobbie as she discovered new clues in her quest to find the perp. This was a fun read for me and I recommend it to anyone that enjoys a good mystery!

What I loved:

- Vermont setting
- Female Sleuth
- Tight circle of suspects

This book is so fun. I love Cozy mysteries for their homey settings and quirky characters, and Caught on Camera was no exception.

Bobbie Brooks, newly widowed, moves to a quaint town in Vermont where she gets swept up in a murder mystery — as the main suspect.

Having spent a bit of time in Vermont myself, I found the setting and the description of the characters to be accurate in all the best ways. The imagery of Bobbie’s town made me want to wrap myself in a blanket and sip hot cocoa, while she and her friends made me laugh out loud numerous times.

The plot itself involved many twists and turns, and kept me guessing until the very end. This book was everything I want in a Cozy mystery and I’m excited to see where the series goes from here!

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this charming book about a photographer who stumbles across a dead body during a photo club outing and finds herself at the top of the suspect list.

Let me tell you, I had to make myself slow down and savor it because this is a book you could easily lose a whole day to reading in one sitting.

The characters are memorable (I especially enjoyed the dynamics between main character Bobbie and her sister Alicia), the small town setting and secretive supporting cast gives Cabot Cove meets Stars Hollow, and the central mystery is tightly plotted with all the twists and turns to keep this reader fully engaged and guessing up to the end.

I’m looking forward to reading more Camera Club mysteries for years to come!

"I haven’t read this book yet, but the synopsis immediately grabbed my attention. It promises the perfect blend of small-town charm and gripping suspense. The idea of a grieving woman trying to rebuild her life, only to be pulled into a mystery that makes her both a suspect and a sleuth, feels so compelling. I love how the photography theme ties into solving the crime it’s such a clever and refreshing angle for a mystery story. Secrets, lies, blackmail, and the tension of not knowing who to trust make this sound like a real page-turner. Even from the description, you can tell this book delivers both heart and edge-of-your-seat suspense. Definitely feels like a must-read for fans of cozy mysteries with a sharp twist!"

Bobbie Brooks has moved to Vermont for a fresh start, and part of her new life includes starting a camera club. Her high hopes crash when she discovers the dead body of one of the members.

The police suspect Bobbie, and she begins to search for the true killer. Her mission takes both funny and dangerous turns.

The relationships in this book are authentic, and Bobbie is a believable character. You'll cheer for her as she begins trying to catch the killer.

I'm giving this book a 5 star rating, and I'll read more books by Kara Lacey.

What a delightful cozy mystery — definitely one of the best I've read in a long time and a solid five stars! The protagonist, Bobbie Brooks, is a multi-layered, fascinating woman with an interesting backstory and an array of talents. I enjoyed getting to know her in this book and can't wait to keep watching her evolve throughout the series. The supporting cast of characters added both drama and laughs, a fantastic combination. The setting, snug in the Green Mountains of Vermont, is perfectly drawn, making me feel as if I were truly present. And to top it off, the writing is beautiful and smooth. I am so looking forward to book 2 in the series!

This was so good. I had to laugh because I know Travis was supposed to be the ex, therefore the bad guy… in the ex sense, but gah his character was cracking me up. Especially when he knew they were doing a little B&E. That was so funny. I had a feeling I knew who did. It took me a little bit. The author did a good job of making so many seem that they could be the culprit. Heck, even the dumb statey almost pulled it off lol. The next one seems like it will be fun with the new character that's come to town. That will be interesting for sure. I can't wait!

Caught on Camera is Book 1 in A Camera Club Mystery by Kara Lacy. I thought that the author blended the foundation of the series with the mystery from book 1. Bobbie has lost her husband and has moved to Vermont to escape her grief. Having her sister, Alicia, living closer is a huge plus. I like the characters and town and I found the murder and why to be interesting. I am looking forward to reading book 2. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.

Bobbi Brooks photographer heads a photography club. At their first location cal shoot Bobbi finds a dead body. The body is one of the club members. Police suspect Bobbi is involved so she feels to clear her name she has to find the real killer. This was a very good book, easy to read but very suspenseful Highly recommend it.

I received an advance review copy, ARC, for free and I am leaving an honest opinion and voluntary review

Thank you to BookSirens for this ARC. It was a cute cozy mystery ultimately solved through a photo. I thoroughly the cast of characters in this small town and was delighted by the photography theme. It felt a little repetitive through the middle, but I pushed through cuz I had to know who done it. A cute, fun read.

I enjoyed this book, although because it is the first in the series, there were a lot of characters introduced. This made it confusing at times- I actually found myself thinking, wait, WHO is this?! But the story and the writing were good, and the mystery left me guessing right up to the end. I will be looking forward to reading the next one in the series!

This is the first book by Kara Lacey. I loved the characters-Bobby, Rose,Alicia, Nate, William etc. and it is a nice twist having the protagonist a photographer trying to rebuild her life after the sudden death of her husband. It is a fast read that keeps you engrossed and wanting to find out who is the killer in the small town of Stonebridge, Vermont.
