Haunting!
The story of one man who has set aside his life to the respectful cremation and last rites of unclaimed dead bodies or corpses stuck in difficult situations.

Vinu's story is painful to hear as much as the pain the dead people might have experienced in the last minutes of life.

His is a story of humanity coming alive even when the near and dear ones have forsaken the corpses of their loved ones.

Amidst all the dead and dirt in this world, itis people like Vinu who light am amber of hope.

My Review
This was such a fascinating read! A story of an ordinary man brought to life with remarkable emotional honesty.

One does not usually think about the dead or the people who deal with them until actually faced with the death of family or friends. But here is Vinu P. who decided, as a young teenager, that it is his mission to collect the bodies of those who meet untimely deaths. Collect meaning physically handling reeking, rotting corpses of people who meet unnatural deaths from drowning or accidents or suicide.
Even when faced with humiliation and being ostracised by society, he just puts his head down and carries on doing his job. He perserveres in his chosen profession, regardless of the scorn he faces and his being treated as a social pariah by everyone. Thankless work since he gets no appreciation or gratitude from anyone.

Why would he continue doing it? It might seem bizarre to us but he believes it is his life's calling to help these lost and sometimes unwanted dead. I was confused at his stubbornness in pursuing this vocation in the face of such adversity and yet, I couldn’t help but be impressed, and eventually was awed, at his determination/ dedication to do his duty to the dead. This is a true calling. 

Niyas Kareem has created a deeply immersive portrait of Vinu and rendered his life in such vibrant detail in this book. 

The photos in the book were so evocative in their stark black and white frames and further added power and vibrancy to this memoir.

A very nice interesting and enjoyable book. Vinu's choices are strange and it requires the heart of gold to do what he does. He has very beautifully expressed the reasons for choosing his job and the side effects of the job in his life. It is a quick read and sometimes very philosophical as well.Below is a summary of the book (contains spoilers):

Book is narrated by Vinu who recovers dead bodies which are difficult to be retrieved either due to decay or being at a place difficult to retrieve from. Basically, he does a job anyone would skip. But he is passionate about it and he does it out of good intentions. He started this when his friend Mithun's body had to be recovered from Periyar. The one-day-old body was actually recovered by Ashanmar (teachers) who he first met at this tragic site. Mithun was his best friend and nobody came forward to help the Ashanmar carry the body to the shore. Thus Vinu got a curiosity about Ashanmar and the kind of life they led. He became a regular follower of Ashanmar and was enamoured by the respect those people were getting from the police and also the kind of philosophy they had about life. He decided he would do the same job. Thus he spent many years helping them and even started doing the job on his own, though secretly. His parents, when they came to know about this, tried to dissuade him. But he was so passionate that he could not stop. Society ostracised him due to his profession; even restaurants did not admit him as they thought customers would be discouraged to enter their premises due to his presence. But there were people who accepted him and he was even taken good care of by the police force who bought him an ambulance and gave him some income for each job he took. He rose to fame when TV channels interviewed him. He got many offers from foreign-settled Malayalis but he respectfully rejected the offers as he wanted to continue the job he was doing in the native regions. He does not believe in ghosts. After his first marriage failed, after a few years he married a girl who understood him very well and they have a son. He is now planning to build a funeral place where he can give last respects to people whose bodies are left without anyone to take ownership of them.

പരമമായ സത്യത്തിലേക്കുള്ള ഒരു ചൂണ്ടുപലക! വിഷമകരമായ വായനാനുഭവം!. ചിലർക്ക് ഈ പുസ്തകം മുഴുമിപ്പിക്കാൻ തന്നെ പ്രയാസം. കാരണം മറ്റൊന്നുമല്ല - സുഖകരമായ മയക്കത്തിൽ, സുന്ദരസ്വപ്നവും കണ്ട് മൂടി പുതച്ച് കിടക്കുന്ന നേരം എങ്ങിനെയാ ആ മായയുടെ പുതപ്പു മാറ്റി ഉണർന്നെഴുന്നേറ്റ് തീക്ഷ്ണമായ പരമസത്യത്തിലേക്ക് കണ്ണുതുറന്നു നോക്കുക? ആരാണ് അതിനു ആഗ്രഹിക്കുക?! കുറച്ചും കൂടി സരളമായി പറഞ്ഞാൽ, പട്ടുമെത്തയിൽ കിടന്നുറങ്ങുന്നവർക്കെങ്ങനെയാ, മേൽപാലങ്ങൾക്കടിയിൽ അന്തിയുറങ്ങുവാനാവുക?

ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട തൊഴിലിന് (ദുര്‍മരണപ്പെട്ട മൃതുദേഹങ്ങള്‍ എടുക്കുക) വേണ്ടി ഇത്രയും ത്വജിക്കുന്ന, അതിനെ ഇത്രയും സ്നേഹിക്കുന്ന വിനു. പിയോട് വളരെ ബഹുമാനം ഉണ്ട്. ഇത്രയും അനുഭവങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നും വിനു എന്നെ പഠിപ്പിച്ച പാഠങ്ങള്‍ വലുതാണ് - മണ്ണിനെ, പെണ്ണിനെ, കേരള പോലീസിനെ, കളഭക്കുറിയെ ഒക്കെ ഇനി പഴയത് പോലെ കാണാന്‍ ആവില്ല.

ഇങ്ങനെ ഒരാളെ പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തിയതിന് നിയാസിന് നന്ദി! വേദനകളെ തീരെ മഹത്വപ്പെടുത്താതെ നേരിട്ടു അവതരിപ്പിച്ചത് ഇഷ്ടമായി. ഇത്രയും അയിത്തം അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന ഒരാളുടെ ജാതിയെ കുറീച് ഒന്നും സൂചിപ്പിക്കാതെ കഥകള്‍ പറഞ്ഞത് എന്തു കൊണ്ടായിരുക്കും എന്നു ആലോചിച്ചു പോയി. വായിച്ചിരിക്കേണ്ട പുസ്തകം.

Simple and deep. Life and narrative . No pretense in writing
It feels so strange when Vinu tells about personal bond and shared feelings between him and the police officials beyond hierarchies and their social positioning. It opens up a new world of contradictions and contrasts from a pov around us that we comfortably neglects

ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നവർക്കാർക്കും വേണ്ടാത്ത ജീവനാണ് എന്റേത്.പക്ഷേ മരിച്ചവർക്ക് എന്നെ വേണം.ആ ഒരു ചിന്തയുള്ളത് കൊണ്ടുമാത്രം ഞാൻ ആത്മഹത്യ ചെയ്തില്ല .എങ്കിലും,അവഗണനയുടെ തീക്കാറ്റിൽ വെന്തുപൊള്ളിയും വെറുപ്പിന്റെ പെരുമഴയിൽ തുള്ളിവിറച്ചും എൻ്റേതല്ലാത്ത ഏതൊക്കെയോ ഇടങ്ങളിലൂടെ നടക്കുകയാണ് ഞാൻ.

പതിനഞ്ചാം വയസ്സ് മുതൽ അഴുകിയ ശരീരങ്ങൾ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്ത്, 1500-ലധികം അനാഥരെ അന്തസ്സോടെ മണ്ണിലുറക്കിയ ഒരു മനുഷ്യൻ. മരണത്തിന്റെ ഗന്ധവും ഭീതിയും നിറഞ്ഞ ദിനരാത്രങ്ങൾ, എന്നിട്ടും "പൂക്കൾ നിറഞ്ഞ മനോഹര ശ്മശാനം" എന്ന സ്വപ്നവുമായി ജീവിക്കുന്ന വിനുവിനോട് ശരിക്കും ബഹുമാനം തോന്നി.
