Marikit and the Ocean of Stars
A middle grade debut, inspired by Filipino folklore, about a ten-year-old girl who embarks on a quest in the world of gods and spirits to save her and her family from a sinister shadow god.

I received a digital ARC of this book through the author via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I do not say this lightly as an avid middle-grade reader, but this just might be in my Top Ten favorite middle grade fantasy books ever. This book is quite possibly The Perfect Middle Grade Fantasy. Every young Filipino reader deserves the gift that is this book.
First of all, Caris Avendaño Cruz's writing is absolutely captivating. This book reads a lot like Tahereh Mafi's Furthermore in that it feels like the narrator is addressing the reader directly. The description of not just setting but also emotion is stunning. I expect great things from Cruz's future works.
The worldbuilding is also fantastic. The lands that Marikit travels are well-realized and creative. I was thoroughly fascinated by how magical everything was. The characters that Marikit meets along the way were also very endearing. I love the entire cast with my soul.
Mostly, I just absolutely loved how very Filipino this is! Every aspect of this book drips with something Filipino. Not only are Filipino words used, but there are references to Filipino folklore, mythology, culture, food, religious beliefs, superstitions, and even some common tall tales many Filipinos are familiar with growing up. I honestly think this should be required reading in Filipino elementary schools! I just think it would be fantastic for young Filipino readers to follow an adventure where they can see their cultural upbringing depicted so unapologetically. This book is, without a doubt, a love letter to young Filipinos, especially those whose families struggle to make ends meet and have nice clothes. Even as an adult, this story resonated with me and reminded me of some of my insecurities and struggles as a kid.
To top all of this off, there are also a lot of great lessons here about identity, family relationships, and what matters most in life. Overall, this book just has so much heart.
I cannot recommend this book enough. It practically demands to be read!

Filipino society revolves heavily around the family unit. What consists of a family has and will continue to change throughout each generation. The Filipino definition of family can run the gamut from the traditional nuclear to family, to extended family members, to the whole community. Whatever the definition, in my opinion the best Filipino stories are those that take a look at the meaning of family and seek to portray how we handle these relationships.
Marikit and the Ocean of Stars achieves this aim with Marikit and her mother. Her mother, a former diwata, sacrificed a lot in order for Marikit to live. This is a narrative Filipinos are intimately familiar with. We see it not just in fiction, but in real life. A relationship characterized by that level of sacrifice can be fraught with toxic pitfalls. But Marikit and the Ocean of Stars neatly sidesteps those pitfalls. This book is one of the gentlest portrayals of our culture of gratitude towards one’s parents that I’ve ever seen.
Marikit’s mother is never shown to hold the sacrifice she makes over her daughter’s head. But Marikit also acknowledges where she came from and how she even got to be in this world. She understands that it required a lot from her mother. It says a lot about her character, and the strength of her identity, that she doesn’t let go of that sacrifice.

There was this TV series I used to adore as a child. It aired on Saturday evenings—if memory serves right—and after dinner, nearly without fail, I would assume my position on the rattan couch and watch, ever eagerly, as the static gave way to oversaturated hues. (Oh, bygone days of blocky analog TVs, you are missed)
The show was called Wansapanataym (a Filipinozation of the classic English stock phrase—you guessed it—“once upon a time”), and every weekend it would deliver us kids our dose of whimsy, served with a generous dollop of adorably bad special effects. It was an anthology of what I’d like to call “modern Filipino fairytales”, characterized by the following literary quartet: an incorrigible child, a magical entity or happenstance set to instill values and propriety, deus ex machina, and a happily-ever-after denouement of moral reformation.
Marikit and the Ocean of Stars adheres to this format, beat by beat. Whether it’s by design or simply the author’s childhood making itself known is debatable. The novel is quintessentially Filipino in its storytelling, covering themes of family, legacy, friendship, and identity. It’s a wonderfully earnest tale full of heart, set against a delightful imagining of Filipino mythology and folklore. It made seven-year old me happy. It left current me emotional. And yet… Flowers aren’t earned by nostalgic charm alone.
The writing, I’m disheartened to report, falters direly. It’s one of those cases where the editor is more culpable than the author. This book would’ve benefited from another round or two of copy reading and line editing because, to be brutally frank, some phrases were so awkwardly constructed it’s atrocious. It’s a real shame as there are genuinely good bits of writing here, but they’ve been poisoned by one infraction after another—from the lexical, all the way to the idiomatic. Besides unsound sentence structures, it’s also riddled with iffy word choices, and an overuse and misuse of hyphenated compound adjectives (dust-blanketed, sun-washed, ashen-colored, blood-cavitied… what even was this last one) all to—unsuccessfully—confer a lyrical quality to the prose. In fact, the effect proved to be the opposite of what was intended: some sentences were so overworked, they came through as stiff and unnatural. I’d give specific examples, but I’ve highlighted and annotated my Kindle ebook to near-death and I honestly can’t be bothered to sift through all the “???”s and “huh”s and “what even”s.
What I will expound on, as it is a huge peeve of mine, is the way cultural information was integrated: inconsistently, gracelessly, and overtly explained. It skewed flow and dialogue. For instance, after having used its local name, a character would interpolate an explicit description of a local dish into his lines. It took “telling” to a whole new level. Also, you can’t just randomly switch between the English and Filipinized spelling of a word; distinctions in dialect exist for a reason!! Commit to one and abide by it. It’s ‘tsokolate’ OR hot chocolate. I’d planned to lay that all out with a little more tact and finesse, but I’m so tired of clumsy writing sabotaging what would've been an otherwise great book. Sigh
Moving on, there’s just nothing left to subtext here. In the spectrum of “showing and telling”, the writing didn’t just “tell”—it whacked one in the head repeatedly. Middle-grade doesn’t mean mid-intelligence; kids ARE smart enough to glean meaning and significance for themselves without constantly being spoon fed.
That’s enough huffing and puffing for today, I think. I really wanted to recommend this book but I can’t do so in good conscience. It’s sad and more than a little frustrating. I recognize that this is the author’s debut, and I felt all the heart and effort she poured into Marikit; but the moment we concede our basic standards, anti-intellectualism gains further ground.

at first, i had a lot of thoughts along the lines of, "wow this is a really good ad for birth control" but it slowly shifted to, "wow, incredible voice acting! beautiful cast of characters! captivating filipino mythology and folklore! relatable contemporary narrative!" i cannot recommend the audiobook enough. amielynn abellera was able to make the enormous cast of characters sound and feel distinct. at one point, i was like, "wait a minute...are there multiple performers?" i'm reminded of the stories told orally that get passed down from generation to generation. marikit and the ocean of stars is genuinely one of the best audiobook solo acts i've ever heard. it was also heartbreaking at one point and had me tearing up at work. caris avendano cruz wrote a resplendent hero's journey to a degree that i haven't been enchanted by in months and amielynn abellera's talent elevated the reading experience. i've been starved of 6-star reads for so long and i'm happy i finally got around to this delightful treat of a novel.

I wanted to love this book. I really did. But... I don't.
That said, all the problems I have are personal. They're neither the fault of the author nor problems the intended audience would have. The writing style was beautiful and the descriptions were vivid. The mythology was fascinating and I learned dugong is not just a Pokemon 😂.
My problem was this - as a 39 year old mom, I just did not like Marikit at all. For me, she was a rude and ungrateful child. She had a lot of trauma in here little life but basically the entire book is her having a temper tantrum and breaking her poor mom's heart. For the intended audience she's probably very relatable and funny. I'm not going to taking stars off the rating because I didn't like a character that wasn't written for ME.

Marikit and the Ocean of Stars is a magical, warm, and tender Filipino middle-grade fantasy. This was my first Filipino-authored book that I read, and I am truly proud of Ms. Caris's work.
I loved and admired this story as it is full of Filipinos endearing quirks, folklore, mythology, our very own dark creatures, and our culture. It also showcases the use of po and opo, which is a sign of respect. The whole story actually reminds me of Da Adventures of Pedro Penduko (a famous TV show in the Philippines that has all the mythological and dark creatures). While reading this, I also felt like reminiscing about the versions of superstition and belief that I knew and heard. If you were a '90s baby, I'm sure you knew all of these stories very well, especially if you grew up outside the reach of technology.
All in all, it may not be perfect, but I loved it. The setting and world-building are great. Each character has its own spotlight and development. I also liked how Marikit is portrayed as a true child; she is not perfect; she has tantrums; she has short patience; but at the end, she is a child, and she knows her mistakes, owns them, and corrects them. Marikit learns what truly should be treasured—not material things but love and family.

This should be read by all young people out there, and I think it should be included by Filipino teachers in their reading material as well. This was a good book that can preserve our folklore, mythology, and Filipino fantasy.

This book was very adventurous, magical and proudly Filipino. I've heard so many good reviews about this book and I am amazed of how the author gave out all her creativity into writing this wonderful story. Each scene is very detailed and imaginative as if I'm reading a script for a Pixar film. I'd love to see this book be adapted into a graphic novel and even a film!
I loved the story of Marikit Lakandula and her dress which is a map that is very important to the story. A map that brought her to different enchanting places and let her meet new friends. I really liked how each chapter has a featured Filipino word which educates foreign readers and brings something familiar to Filipino readers.
This story is full of heart, emotion and imagination.

Things hit differently after rereading this novel. The colors and wonders that this book has given to me the first time that I read it has sprung into a blast of vivid colors. Truly, a magnificent work of art and one of my best read this year. 🌊🌊

It took me a while to finish this but my heart is filled with wonders as I flip each of its pages. This book brought me to the magical realm where I ventured together with its characters.
No wonder why @spenssoria ( one of my friends) loved this so much! I am so happy that he recommend us this treasure.
Her debut novel had open my childhood imagination. It brings me back to a fantasy world where I can think of beautiful fairies, colorful fireflies, and the rich cultural folklore of our country. What it makes more interesting is it fits my taste which is reading middle-grade books! Truly Filipino authors can even hit the standards of international books.
Most of the time I caught myself floating into the world that the author had created. My childhood heart was with wonders. It feels like I am gaping and venturing into vast amazement. My eyes were filled with sparkles. My heart was filled with joy. My soul felt joyous and triumphant and my adventurous self was manifested throughout this novel.
There is so much that is stored in this book from magic, family, friendship, adventure, and even unforgettable characters and lessons!
If you see this in a bookstore, please don't hesitate to grab one. It is so beautiful and magical and deserves a lot of praise and hype.

Overall, it is a must-read middle-grade fantasy. No doubt that this book deserves a 5-star rating.

This was so cute and sweet! An adventure with an all Filipino cast, a story rich in culture, traditions, mythology, religious beliefs and many, many more.
I loved the lush descriptions of the places Marikit visits, I appreciated the Barrios or just any community in the story that showcases the difference in customs. Almost every creature/mythical being (I say almost because some are Nightmares!) and friend that Marikit meets along the way are endearing. Her character development was one I commend as well, giving the message that sometimes maybe acceptance is the only key. It was obvious that this book was written with love, for country, for family, and self. I think young readers would love this little story.

1.5 ⭐️ for the audio narrator (I’ve listened to 4 books THIS YEAR ALONE narrated by Amielynn Abellera and was pretty bleh about all her other narrations but this is seriously her worst one so far. see more at end of review)
Marikit and the Ocean of Stars by Caris Avendaño Cruz is a fast-paced action packed middle grade adventure novel heavily inspired by Filipino Folklore. If you enjoy books like Abeni’s Song by P. Djeli Clark and The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland by Catherynne M. Valente, this might be for you.
We follow stubborn and strong-willed Marikit who bragged to all her friends that she was going to wear a beautiful brand new dress for her 10th birthday. The big day approaches and her mother, a seamstress who only speaks sign language, presents her with a patchwork dress made from scraps of old clothes that does not meet her expectations. Her mother urges her over and over to wear it, with Marikit not understanding that why until shadows come and she’s whisked away into a magical world.
The most impressive aspect of this book is the absolutely vibrant world Caris paints with her beautiful writing. As Marikit goes on a quest, she discovers that her dress is a map that’ll guide her through numerous trials as she trudges through the most incredibly crafted lands. Along the way, Marikit meets the most adorable of companions and makes a lot of new friends.
This checked all the boxes for middle grade adventure books. You have a feisty main character that has quite a bit of growing to do, a quest and journey through a captivating world, and amazing characters you meet along the way. The culture in this book drips from every single page and very unapologetically presents you with not only the mythological creatures of the Philippines, but also the values most, if not all, Filipinos hold dear.
I co-read this book physically with the audio and while I personally do not enjoy this particular narrator, as I think she did this book a disservice with her portrayal of Marikit and the numerous strange accents she decided to give all the secondary characters, I do highly recommend reading this book physically.
This is a tender love letter to Filipino children, full of heart and yearning. It felt like a warm hug to my inner child. I truly would’ve loved to have this book growing up. Reading through Marikit’s eyes would’ve been so relatable to me growing up – the tantrums, her irritation that grown-ups kept things from you *and for what*, her perseverance and how much she values the friends she makes, and ultimately the realization of the enormity of her mother’s sacrifice and how much she loved her.

1.5 ⭐️ for the audio narrator (I’ve listened to 4 books THIS YEAR ALONE narrated by Amielynn Abellera and was pretty bleh about all her other narrations but this is seriously her worst one so far. see more at end of review)
Marikit and the Ocean of Stars by Caris Avendaño Cruz is a fast-paced action packed middle grade adventure novel heavily inspired by Filipino Folklore. If you enjoy books like Abeni’s Song by P. Djeli Clark and The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland by Catherynne M. Valente, this might be for you.
We follow stubborn and strong-willed Marikit who bragged to all her friends that she was going to wear a beautiful brand new dress for her 10th birthday. The big day approaches and her mother, a seamstress who only speaks sign language, presents her with a patchwork dress made from scraps of old clothes that does not meet her expectations. Her mother urges her over and over to wear it, with Marikit not understanding that why until shadows come and she’s whisked away into a magical world.
The most impressive aspect of this book is the absolutely vibrant world Caris paints with her beautiful writing. As Marikit goes on a quest, she discovers that her dress is a map that’ll guide her through numerous trials as she trudges through the most incredibly crafted lands. Along the way, Marikit meets the most adorable of companions and makes a lot of new friends.
This checked all the boxes for middle grade adventure books. You have a feisty main character that has quite a bit of growing to do, a quest and journey through a captivating world, and amazing characters you meet along the way. The culture in this book drips from every single page and very unapologetically presents you with not only the mythological creatures of the Philippines, but also the values most, if not all, Filipinos hold dear.
I co-read this book physically with the audio and while I personally do not enjoy this particular narrator, as I think she did this book a disservice with her portrayal of Marikit and the numerous strange accents she decided to give all the secondary characters, I do highly recommend reading this book physically.
This is a tender love letter to Filipino children, full of heart and yearning. It felt like a warm hug to my inner child. I truly would’ve loved to have this book growing up. Reading through Marikit’s eyes would’ve been so relatable to me growing up – the tantrums, her irritation that grown-ups kept things from you *and for what*, her perseverance and how much she values the friends she makes, and ultimately the realization of the enormity of her mother’s sacrifice and how much she loved her.

[4.5] Beautiful book. A book I want to see as a movie. Very magical and familiar.
There were some hiccups na I think more of me, being nitpicky. Parang 4 stars na yung balak ko dito sa book. Pero hindi pa ako tapos nun magbasa. After finishing… parang nakakapanghinayang na hindi i-5 stars since nagustuhan ko pa rin naman.
But overall, I love how creative this book is.

3.5 stars. MARIKIT AND THE OCEAN OF STARS is geared towards younger readers, and I have no doubt in my mind that my younger self would have found this story charming, magical and worth a spot on her rereads list. Even now, as an adult, I do think this is a wonderful whimsical book about a young girl named Marikit who ends up on a journey that allows her to understand and grow into herself and her relationships even more. I loved all the touches of Filipino lore in the story too, and it made it even more special to read. Definitely would like to see more stories like this one on the shelves for people all over the world to read!

Sometimes all you need is a middlegrade adventure. This was a really cute one, with a main character who goes through a lot of growth. She starts out pretty annoying, but of course she should be allowed to be, being 12 years old, but she really grew on me by the end of the story. I really enjoyed the journey she went on, meeting so many different characters and having so many different stories told. It's just not quite 4 stars for me because I feel like this book will probably not stay with me for a long time.

MARIKIT is a book of firsts for me. It's the first middle grade novel I've read since I was a child, and the first middle grade novel I've ever read set in the Philippines. And what a book it is! From the very first page, I was hooked on this story of young Marikit and the journey she goes on to become a full-fledged Diwata.
Marikit Lakandula is 10 years old, and all she wants is a brand new dress for her birthday. Her mother is an expert seamstress, and ever since Marikit's father and brother were lost at sea, her mother has made all of Marikit's clothes by hand, recycling them from whatever she can spare. But instead of the blue dress Marikit dreams of, she ends up with a dress made out of seemingly random patches. It's Marikit's nightmare - until Shadows come to take her from home and Marikit finds out that her new dress is magic built to protect her.
As she enters the land of the Engkantos, Marikit learns more than that. She finds out that her dress is a map, and if she safely follows it to its destination, she could become a Diwata in her own right. Along the way, she encounters figures from Philippine mythology, makes many good friends, and faces terrifying dangers.
There were moments when I was reading MARIKIT where I couldn't stop smiling, because the stories that she was encountering were stories that I had heard before. Even though growing up, I didn't grow up in the Tagalog regions of the Philippines and so didn't know much about some of the deities that Marikit encounters, many of what Marikit encounters came straight out of my childhood. Tikbalang, aswang, Juan Tamad and the fruit, the story of Malakas and Maganda, Bathala, sungka...etc. Marikit is also the kind of protagonist I could cheer for, a resolute, steadfast protagonist who's loyal to her family and her friends and doesn't know when to give up. I realized as I was reading it that this was the kind of book I would have devoured as a child, the book that I wanted growing up and never had.
I'm very happy this book is out in the world, and I can't wait to see what else the author has in store for us!

I'm claiming it: This is going to be my favorite middle grade read of the year, heck, I'm even considering it as one of my favorite middle grade books of all time. It's a perfect combination of two things I love the most in literature — Filipino representation and a great MG character. To say that I'm wow-ed is an understatement.
I could compliment Cruz's writing in every aspect possible. From its incredible world-building using different elements from Filipino myths, legends, beliefs, and superstitions to its adventure-like storyline. It reminded me of the fantasy shows I used to watch when I was young (such as 'Wansapanataym' and 'Encantadia').
But most importantly, this book highlighted a story of a Filipino girl whose life isn't far from reality. Someone who was bullied because of her appearance and social status, but also, someone who learned the value of family, friendship, fortitude, perseverance, self-love, and what treasure truly is througout her journey. Because of that, Marikit now occupies a very special place in my heart 🤍
In conclusion, I have no other words but please, friends, read this book. If you're seeing this post, I'm not giving you a choice. READ IT.

I wanted so badly to LOVE this book, but I have so many problems with it.
I'll first talk about the good things. I love how this weaved (no pun intended) so many of the mythological creatures/gods in one story. I got to revisit so much from my childhood while learning new things. I love how it captured the unconditional love of a mother.
However, it felt like it had no general direction. Yes, I understand it's all about the journey, but the journey felt all over the place. Parang ako 'yung napagod sa pagbabasa. It didn't feel very cohesive to me, which is sad because I was so excited for this whole thing. Anyway, it's also sad that everything just fell into place. I mean, yes, I understand this is a middle-grade book, but it felt too convenient. The book talked a lot about how you won't end up with the same people you started with, but . Anyway, the main issue I really had with this book was that it felt all over the place. Like a hodge podge of Philippine mythology.
I know, though, that other people would enjoy this book! And it's honestly a good step for bringing Philippine literature/mythology out there.

One of the best middle grade's I've read this year, and I've read some really great ones. This one is an early read, and won't be out until October, but when you get your hands on it, you won't be able to put it down. Full of Filipino folklore and magical realism, this story explores a girl's very real journey as she struggles to be enough in a world where "enough" feels just beyond her grasp.
This story will give you all the feels, and at the same time, force you to look at yourself, your life and what's really important. As children get lost in these pages, Marikit's story will help them find themselves. A stunning debut.

Marikit's story is dazzling, breathtaking, and spellbinding. She may not know exactly why she's on the path she travels, or what lies ahead, but Marikit does not lack heart or determination in the face of any challenges, sorrows, monsters, and strange creatures that come her way. Marikit knows that promises we break will break us, and she refuses to let that happen.
This is such a tender and imaginative debut by Caris Avendaño Cruz. It reads like a classic bedtime story, but dripping with Filipino culture, mythology, and spirit. Her lush and enchanting prose, combined with a whimsical plot and heartfelt characters, made it easily one of the best middle grade stories I've read. I would compare the reading experience of this, with my other most cherished middle-grade fantasy novels, The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne Valente.
That's big praise from me!!
I love a story that leads with its heart and largely ignores the "shoulds" of the logical brain. I also love a story of a seemingly ordinary kid, doing extraordinary things in bizarre circumstances, and choosing their own fate on a path that chose them.
Marikit encounters all sorts of strange and wonderful things along the way.. From an Infinite spirit in the form of a friendly firefly and talking rocks, to child-hungry Aswang and culinary-inclined giants, to wrathful goddesses and a boardgame-playing god, to a cursed lazy boy and a girl whose skin starts on fire in the sunlight. No matter what peculiar or sinister creature she encounters, Marikit knows that it is love that will ultimately guide her to where she needs to be.
How does Marikit follow a magical map-dress to an unknown X, and learn the true purpose of her journey?

✦ The art is cute. Not just the cover, but the illustrations in the book are cute as well. (The artist, Alexis Young, is Canadian, but I think born to Chinese-Filipino parents, so that’s also cool.)
✦ The story was fun and rollicking. It doesn’t stop, and neither does Marikit — I think she eats maybe once, and that’s about all the rest she gets. It’s really just a romp, with Avendaño Cruz taking the “fantasy” part seriously. There’s no map, this is fairyland! Anything goes, and everything is patchwork, just like Marikit’s dress.
✦ It’s fun to see Filipino culture more clearly represented in a fantasy book for kids.
✦ The ending was really cute and heartwarming. Also Bathala dropped some truths in the end, and Marikit finds some truths of her own — what’s really important to her.

✦ There are some weird turns of phrase. ‘Mayari’s thin lips snickered,’ or ‘Bathala … gaped down with his big, fiery eyes,’ like … those verbs do not mean what I think you want them to mean.
✦ There were times when I had difficulty picturing what was going on in the scene. I feel like there could have been better ways to depict what was going on. Also, if Marikit yells one more time in all caps, I am going to shiv a bitch.

My thoughts on Marikit is that it successfully delivered a wonderfully-woven novel highlighting the significance of friendship, support, and self-belief to a growing kid while also championing Filipino folklore, stories, and myth.
Marikit is unapologetically Filipino and if you read this book, you'll understand what I'm saying because there is no chapter, er, page that is flipped without sighting a reference to our rich repertoire of arts and literature.
Speaking of references, there are minor (mention of a road where the Ibong Adarna frequents) and major ones - my absolute favorite is Juan Tamad as Caris was able to reshape the Philippines' lazy fictional legend as someone who is cursed and is willing to redeem himself by working hard and changing his belief.
Marikit's interaction with Juan Tamad is chaotic and I'm squealing when Marikit accidentally saved him during their first meeting.
Marikit, as a main character, is not flawless - there are moments in the book where her character is borderline annoying but I can't fault Marikit because there are instances and circumstances in life that led each of us to wherever we were today and those usually result to us wanting for something that we can't afford.
Even us, adults, are whiny when it comes to things that we can't get. We just learned how to suppress our emotion and not show it to everyone.
