Saw this, one clicked, love zombies, and funnily enough I've been binging 'Fear the walking dead' so it only seems right that I jump into a zombie book.

Got to admit though, it'll be my first cherry popping with it being a lesbian inspired book.

This had so much potential but I felt like it was too rushed, everything happened at a record speed, with that being the case I found it hard connecting with these two. Like they met, and before you could even blink they were together, think it was the second night after meeting. Keep in mind one had not been involved with a female before. I just expected a wee bit more to transpire between these two before going further.

I wanted to feel the nervousness, the tiptoeing into unknown chartered waters, I wanted that slow burn to grab ahold of me, sadly this missed the mark. (For me)

Being that this is/was my first lesbian story I wanted to feel what our heroine Eliza should’ve been feeling.

Another book that has so much potential, but not enough details. If it had been doubled in size with more, I think it would be a great novel. As much as I love zombie books, this one felt really cheesy. There were a lot of flaws I noticed as well, and the thing that bugged me the most was that Eliza was straight, and within a day she was denying she was gay and then jumped right into something with River, which also felt forced? Then the issue of Eliza technically getting bit/scratched and SHOWING symptoms then is suddenly fine. It didn’t feel like there was a real connection between the two MCs and everything moved so fast. The father was severely injured and by himself for a WEEK and yet was alive? I just questioned a lot throughout the story and wished there had been more because I wanted to like it.

Surviving Her by Grace Parker is a light take on the zombie apocalypse with very minimal angst.

A plot hole I noticed for example is the boy in hospital who was bitten by his sister. Where was the bite, how big, what were the symptoms that necessitated him to be treated in theatre? Simple information like that could have elevated the scene to be more authentic. Second is the main character’s father’s injury. An open fracture means bleeding and bleeding for days although haphazardly splinted is rife for infection +++. But ok, benefit of the doubt that he survived, again, the surgical and medical intervention was vague. Last medical inconsistency, promise! It’s the main character’s injury. Supposedly she fractured her arm but was it open and closed fracture because the doctor set it and then the issue was forgotten like she never had the injury at all.

In general, there were a number of inconsistencies and not enough sense of urgency for a zombie apocalypse. However, looking on the positive side of book, if you’re into a lighter take on a zombie apocalypse story then this is your book.

4 stars. I thought this was pretty good. Hence the four stars. I liked River and Eliza as characters and their romance was good but it moved at a rapid speed but I guess it made sense. I will say that the sex scenes felt a bit out of place. They literally were in the middle of the beginning of a zombie apocalypse and there were zombies outside and they just have sex? The build up to it could've been a lot better. It was a bit jarring because up until that moment I didn't feel any sexual chemistry between them. That aside, the action and tension in this were great. The pacing was smooth and kept the story going. I was never bored while reading this. While I didn't absolutely love this book the potential for this series is certainly there and I can't wait for book two because I feel like they'll only get better from here.

DNF @ 27%

I tried but too many things in SURVIVING HER aren't really making sense. For instance one of the FMCs is a wilderness guide and survivalist and she doesn't believe in raising animals as food? Also her and her father travel to their cabin to avoid the virus but don't seem to have a car?

And then the other FMC is an ER doctor, and should be used to lots of chaos and taking command of situations, but when things start going bad she's paralyzed with confusion.

Additionally the way all the characters interact with each other and talk to each other just doesn't feel very natural.

3 stars is me being generous.
This wasn't as long or complex as I originally thought it would be.
Way too much telling rather than showing, which is really unfortunate cause this could have been really interesting.

I was enjoying the first half even though it was already pretty unrealistic, but it lost me more and more towards the end.

You're telling me river left her injured father, who she was afraid would die because of blood loss, on the floor with a broken leg for a week and he survived that? Seems pretty unrealistic to me.

There was also nothing believable about the romance.
Eliza thought she was straight and (what felt like) 20 pages later she's in love with River?

There were way too little details about the zombies and way too little scenes with them.
It felt like the author was just trying to make it easy for themselves and kept writing stuff like "thankfully no zombies were around", "they spotted a few zombies but thankfully they didn't seem to notice them".
And when the main characters got injured, their injuries were forgotten 7 pages later.

It's a extremely quick and easy read, especially to get out of a reading slump.
But I won't be picking up more books in this series.

3⭐️

I think, if it was longer it would be such a good read.
The story is really short considering, it goes kinda like this;

Outbreak day 1 - They meet, agree to stick together, spice out of absolutely no where… no build up or fuck all.
day 2 - already confessing undying love, abit of tense drama. (This bits probably true to wlw to be fair)
Day 3 - saves someone, lives happily ever after.

I enjoyed the quick read, I just wish it was longer, with more of an actual relationship forming.. instead of she’s fit, she’s straight, bang anyway.. basically.
And for a zombie outbreak, they’re ain’t many zombie interactions.

Ludicrous.
Taking several days over a trek previously done in ten hours. Even with added obstacles.
Finding her wounded dad alive after said days. As someone with some medical back ground: that whole dad situation was… laughable. I actually lol’ed. What utter drivel.
No build up to the romance.
One got bitten/scratched, no follow up other than “it was’t that deep”.

And that epilogue. OMG 😂😂😂
Introducing several new characters and a whole new world.

In short: love the idea, beyond poor writing/world building.

I loved the concept of the book, but I wish it was longer and that it went more in-depth. It was a quick and easy read, but it was a lot more romance focused than I expected and not exactly what I had been hoping for.
But if you’re looking for a quick, easy and fun read with zombies, a hint of angst and romance, then this is perfect for you!
Overall it was a good book, just not quite what I was expecting.

Ugh

2 stars was honestly generous here. This book had potential to be amazing with an exciting plot. Instead, all the exciting bits were rushed through and we had to listen to cheesy inner monologue for about 75% of the book. There were also so many ridiculous holes in the plot. I wanted to love this so bad but unfortunately it was a miss.
