The first time I met Hudson Gatlin, the governor was a hot mess. The last thing the widowed, straight, single father needed was a public relationship with a man. He wasn't going to win re-election with the tight end of the Storm on his arm. Can we keep this new relationship under wraps, or will I need to pull him offside with a hard count?.

Emerson Beckett is no longer new to the publishing world. As an avid sports fan and lover of well-written M/M romance books, Emerson loves her new career as an author of gay romance. It’s even more fulfilling for her when she can combine the two.

The journey to becoming an author started with an idea while reading on the sofa. That idea became an email that ultimately resulted in Emerson using those teacher skills to edit novels for three phenomenal MM romance authors. The third referral led to an opportunity to co-write a book series with one of the most genuine and kindest people she’s ever had the pleasure of knowing- Rheland Richmond.

Emerson is the co-author of The Package Deal Series, The Portland Protectors Series, and the San Diego Storm Series. She has 16 published books.

Besides being a retired teacher and author, Emerson lives in North Carolina and has been married to the same man for 35 years. She is the mother of three beautiful adults, one of whom is proudly part of the LGBTQ Community and completely responsible for her addiction to MM Romance. Even though the kids no longer live at home, they filled the empty nest with an Australian Shepherd and five cats.

Hard Count is a wonderful low-angst opposite attracts romance between a governor and a professional athlete. Together they embark on a fast-moving romance filled with humor, steamy moments, and adorable declarations. Hudson and Evan are so much fun to read. Their instant chemistry from a hilarious mishap made for a very entertaining meet-cute that quickly transformed into fast feelings where neither wanted to let the other escape their sight.

Overall I loved this fast-paced romance between two unsuspecting guys. They were both surprised, but welcoming to their intense feelings for one another and developing something real and meaningful. I loved the banter between the two and enjoyed the fun moments they shared. This is a great romance that I could not get enough of. I look forward to the next entry in the series!!!

Hard Count is book one in the San Diego Storm Football series. This MM football player and governor romance story is about Evan and Hudson.

Evan is a thirty-two year old professional football player. Hudson is a forty-four year old Governor of California. He is also a widower with two children. Evan and Hudson meet at a Gala, become fast friends, and then things quickly progress to more. This story was a little too insta-love for me, especially since Hudson had been grieving the loss of his wife, and he had never been interested in men before.

Overall, this was a very low angst love story. Evan and Hudson were both great guys, and it was nice to see Hudson find love after loss.

This book was very nice, but it wasn’t particularly interesting. Just lots of things going smoothly and minor challenges resolved easily.

It really needed better editing for grammar and other errors (there was even a chapter that was duplicated).

Audiobook Review

Narrated by Michael Dean

I really, really enjoyed this audiobook. I’ve listened to quite a bit of Michael Dean’s work over the years, and honestly? This might be one of his best performances yet. He brought Hudson and Evan to life with such heart, giving each character their own distinct voice and personality. It was amazing.

And the story itself? Just as good as the narration.

I absolutely loved the connection between Evan and Hudson. From their very first meeting, the chemistry sparked, and watching their easy friendship grow into something deeper was so satisfying. Hudson, a straight, widowed governor and devoted father of two, isn’t exactly looking for a relationship, especially not with an out and proud football player. But Evan’s charm is irresistible, not just to Hudson but to his kids too.

I loved watching Hudson embrace his identity, step into something new, and do it with a little growl and a lot of confidence. I was rooting for them from start to finish.

This was my first book by Emerson and definitely won’t be my last. I’m already eyeing the backlist!

Audiobook Review:

Evan and Hudson’s meet cute was hilarious. I loved how flustered Evan makes Hudson!!!

How sweet is Evan!!! He’s such a puppy.

Any time there is great communication in a book I have to point it out because I love to see it and this book had it! From the beginning Evan and Hudson were upfront about who they were, what they wanted and anything that brought questions to their circumstances.

I loved seeing Evan with Hudson’s kids and they way he acknowledged them and incorporated them into his plans and he want for a relationship with Hudson.

I also liked that Hudson knew his children needed different things from him and although he didn’t always know what it may be he did his best to learn and connect with them.

The banter, the pining, the relationship as a whole was cute and so fun!

Lennox and Evan’s friendship is so fun and love their bond. They are so supportive of each other and very intuitive when it comes to one another.

The team as always is great!

I loved this series!

Michael Dean (narrator) is always perfection! I loved what he brought to the characters and how he was able to make me connect with them. I laughed so many times but I also felt the pining between Evan and Hudson and sorrow when the topic of the children’s mother came up.

Trust Emerson Beckett to deliver a story of two men falling in love, making a family and having a sweet HEA with a very very satisfying epilogue.

We've abandoned Portland after the end of The Package Deal and The Protectors series and we're now in California, when the Governor, Hudson Gatlin, is trying to handle his responsibilities towards the citizens and towards his children. Being a single dad after the death of his wife is not easy and an unexpected help will come from a handsome football player.

Evan Ellis is such a sweet sweet man! Maybe he never committed to anyone (after breaking up with his boyfriend years before) and that would give the impression he's immature but he definitely is a man who just wants to be loved and to have a family to cherish. He was attracted to Hudson at first sight, but he fell in love with his children too and he welcomed them in his life along with their dad.
I really really adored Evan's relationship with Jack, Hudson's son: they have a strong deep bond and Jack will find in Evan another parent, a man who wants to protect him, support him and love him just like Hudson does.

Another thing I appreciated is that Evan and Hudson's lives were complicated, their love didn't make problems magically disappear and they had to work hard for their happily ever after.

Many characters from the previous series make their appearances in this book (Preston and Evan's banter is amazing!): I'll never thank the author enough for not forgetting them and giving us glimpses of their lives as the time passes.
There are also new interesting characters who are very promising, especially Lennox. I can't wait for his story.

It's no secret I'm in love with this universe and I definitely recommend this amazing start of a new series.

Emerson Beckett has quickly become a favorite author of mine since discovering her "The Package Deal" series. I particularly appreciate her ability to craft low-angst stories with swoon-worthy happy endings and charming characters. This latest novel perfectly embodies her style, captivating me from the very first page.

The author skillfully establishes a captivating world centered around the San Diego Storms, and the intriguing array of characters keeps me thoroughly engaged. This story follows Hudson, the Governor of California, and Evan, the charismatic football player for the Storms. Evan's attraction to Hudson is evident from their initial encounter and only intensifies over time. While Hudson, a widower, initially hesitates due to his responsibilities toward his children, he ultimately decides to embrace this connection, creating a heartwarming and endearing narrative.
Their witty banter is delightful to read, and Evan's charm is undeniable. Certain scenes are particularly poignant and left me blushing. Despite facing a period of long-distance, their love remains unwavering.

I especially adored Evan's bond with Hudson's children, particularly Jack, where he effectively assumes a parental role. Their happy ending is both heartwarming and satisfying.

The story features numerous cameos from previous characters, each adding a delightful touch to the narrative. The banter between Preston and Evan is particularly well-written and highly enjoyable.

Overall, this is an exceptional novel that I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone seeking a swoon-worthy and heartwarming love story.

* I received an ARC copy from the author and this is my honest review *

Found family this author writes found family better than anyone I have ever read. This story is an offshoot of the Portland Pirates features several throw outs to Greer and that family. They’re featured in the story but found family for me. That is one of those things in stories that I absolutely love And this author writes found family better than anyone I have ever read.
I absolutely adored how this book opened and that the first lines of this book is this is our love story you know this is a happily ever after that you don’t go into this thinking and you never do with this author you know there’s going to be struggles, but you know that they’re going to fight with it together And that’s one of my favorite things from this author is that the characters fight their obstacles together.
This book features a football player and the governor of California recently widowed and struggles, not only that they face in the end of his term as governor, but in a very public relationship with him being in that relationship as well as a football player who has never been quiet about his Bisexuality, but never truly being outspoken about it

I really enjoyed this book. There was little to no angst and such a great listen. Couldn’t stop listening to the book.

A single father running the state of California and a Super Bowl champion? Sign me up. For being some high profile people and usually on the media’s radar, there isn’t much drama that comes from this book.

My favorite part of this whole book has to be the relationship Evan built with Hudson’s son.

The narrator did a good job a telling the story, differentiating each character, and bringing the story to life.

Hoping the son gets a book in the future 🫣

Swoon-worthy, heartfelt and humorous!

I really enjoyed this one. I liked the authenticity of the long distance romance and quickly established connection. These two met, crushed and fell hard and fast and I was here for it.
The kids were great characters and I loved the extended epilogue featuring an older Jack, that was beautiful!
I liked all the characters and cameos and now need to go back and learn all about them too! So many great connections that add just that little bit of intrigue to keep you hooked.
Lennox sounds like a riot and I look forward to seeing him meet his match!

This book was overall pretty lovely. Sweet, decent spice, but had me disappointed as well. I think the author did well with the character development and the progression of the story. I do think that the premise had such promise but when the author attempted to keep things low angst the story lost a bit of depth with it.
I wish we just had a little bit of deeper emotion within the story. Otherwise, this gave me pretty warm fuzzies.

Lennox only had about five scenes in the entire book, but he was much more interesting than both Evan and Hudson. I think it's because he has shown signs of having a personality rather than just being "good" like his best friend Evan. I'm not really convinced they're best friends either, considering Evan stopped caring about him and everyone else the moment he got a "governor" boyfriend. I can't wait for his story.

Not for me

Okay, I love the concept of the book. I was hoping this wasn't going to be like the other books by the same author that were clear often but it was. I got really no struggling feelings after grieving the love of his life and tada I really like a man and just kind of jumping in. Keep in mind this all happens within the first 35 percent of the story. Give a good lead in not just jump. I think this is how this author writes and I am not down with it.

DNF @ 62%

Bi awakening was a little unjustified imo. Hudson just asking himself "why is my heart beating so fast" when he's in proximity to Evan felt like it came out of nowhere. Would've liked some indication that he was attracted to men or four the attraction to have come after he and Evan got to know each other more.

Adley implying that she knew Hudson was attracted Evan was similarly unjustified. What, Hudson smiling automatically implies a crush?
Same with Nick & Preston also assuming that Evan was going to hit on Hudson.

I guess I'm really just taking issue with how people are automatically assuming something was going to happen between Hudson and Evan despite the fact that there wasn't strong enough evidence to so. If Hudson had caught himself staring more or thinking of Evan after a longer period of time (not just after one diner where they barely interacted) then it would be more believable.

And wow, Hudson really just took to gay sex with no issues. Disappointing considering how like 90% of what makes a sexual awakening interesting is the vulnerability over something new, scary, and arousing.

I assumed Jack was going to have an issue with Hudson and Evan getting together considering that whole "I dont want you to forget her" line he gave in the flight down, but I guess he was fine with it since he got to play football?

Finally had to stop at 62% though. After Hudson and Evan got together, things were just too fluffy. Yes, this was supposed to be low angst, but there complete lack of any real conflict just made this so boring.

Also having previous characters from old books cameo is fine. Having them be such major plot points distracts from the main couple. (Looking at you Nick, Preston, Greer)

TL;DR Super fluffy. Basically not a bi-awakening. Very indulgent in self referencing old characters.

New Review! Hard Count (San Diego Storm #1) by @mm.author.emerson.beckett

Oh my gosh, I’ve developed some real trust issues with Emerson since she makes me feel SO MANY FEELS with her books. 🤣 (I’m just a big softie) but I’m happy to say that I only cried ONCE and it was in the EPILOGUE and it was all happy tears! this book was SO SOFT, SO SWEET, and was just SUCH a SWOONY ride from start to finish! So much romance! And SEGGSY STEAMY GOOD TIMES!

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

So we have the recently widowed Governor of California, Hudson Gatlin, hosting a seggsy Gala and some members of the championship San Diego Storm, including the SMOKING hot Evan Ellis (Tight End) and a they run into each other in a most awkward way. Full Awkward romcom as Evan spills Hud’s drink all over his shirt. Cue a seggsy bi-awakening quick change in the governor’s office and sparks start with no hope of ever stopping.

Even though they part ways, Hudson’s son is a huge football fan (even has a poster of Evan on his wall) and it’s the “In” they both need to get to know each other better.

Things move at lightning speed as Hudson visits Evan for a “Family Holiday” in San Diego and gets to know Evan and the Team, and even learns a few things about the fluidity of his seggsuality 😏💥💦

Their courtship is tooth rottingly sweet and funny and cute as they make love, seggs, family, and friendship happen over long distance. (Seriously, their pining and gifts for each other are next level) and I love how they grow together.

And it all stays very low angst. NO 3rd act break up! And tons of cameo’s from previous series! So much of this book will give you the warm fuzzies!

🥰 you deserve the warm fuzzies. Read this book. Start this series. Book 2 comes out april 1st and looks to be a banger!

5 stars!

This was just the fluffiest, sweetest romance ever! Regardless of the fact that these two men were pretty opposite, and Hudson had been happily married to a woman for most of his life, Evan and Hudson were just so perfect for one another. They really were just the cutest and could get absolutely schmoopy on occasion.

From their very first meet-cute, which was definitely memorable for them both, Hudson and Evan felt the attraction for one another. It was almost if their meeting was meant to be. I questioned several times in my mind if Adley, Hudson's assistant and late wife's sister, had an idea that these men would hit it off, but it is never truly stated if them getting together was on her agenda from the start. I will say I loved how supportive she was of Hudson finding love again. It couldn't have been easy, but Adley knew how much her sister wished for Hudson to find happiness again.

I also loved how respectful Evan was of Hudson's past marriage. He never seemed jealous that Hudson had been previously married to someone he loved. It was pretty clear that Hudson had only eyes for Evan once they let themselves go there. Even Hudson's children, who are very present in the story, could tell there was something going on with their father. Speaking of the kids, Evan's relationship with both of Hudson's children, Jack especially, was such a lovely addition. When Jack confided in Evan something he hadn't told anyone before, it showed me how much he accepted Evan as a part of his father's life and his.

The next book in this series is Lennox, Evan's best friend and the quarterback of The Storm's football team. He's quite the character and like Hudson, has never been with another man before. He's also a huge slut and I always enjoy reading a playboy change his tune for the right guy. Lennox totally fits the bill!

Hard Count by Emerson Beckett is a delightful, low-angst, opposites-attract romance that brings together a no-nonsense governor and a charismatic professional athlete in an unexpected love story. From the very first page, the chemistry between Hudson and Evan leaps off the page, sparked by a hilarious mishap that sets the tone for their playful and heartwarming journey. Their meet-cute is pure perfection—funny, awkward, and the perfect setup for the fast-paced romance that follows.

What makes Hard Count shine is the seamless blend of humour, heartfelt moments, and steamy chemistry. Hudson and Evan might come from completely different worlds, but their connection is instant and undeniable. Despite their differences, they find common ground in their values, passions, and the magnetic pull they feel toward one another. I loved how both characters embraced their feelings without unnecessary drama—allowing their bond to grow naturally into something real and meaningful.

The banter between Hudson and Evan is witty and charming, providing plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, while the deeper emotional beats give the story its heart. Their dynamic is full of flirty exchanges, adorable declarations, and moments of vulnerability that make you root for them from start to finish.

This fast-moving romance is pure fun, with just the right amount of steam and sweetness. Emerson Beckett masterfully balances humour and heart, making Hard Count a page-turner that’s hard to put down. I couldn’t get enough of these two and am already excited for the next book in the series! If you love opposites-attract romances with lovable characters, clever dialogue, and feel-good vibes, this one’s for you!.

This is my first read from Emerson Beckett, but it won't be my last!

Evan Ellis is a Super Bowl winning football star, and Hudson Gatlin is the straight, widowed Governor of California. The pair has a hilarious meet-cute at a gala where Evan and his team are being honoured for their achievements. I loved the instant connection between them; Evan flustered Hudson in a way he had never been before, and Hudson made Evan see visions of a future and a family life he hadn't dared to dream of.

I loved how adoring they were of each other and how they accepted their relationship and proudly showed their love to the world.

Evan was so good with Hudson's children, and it was lovely to see how Jack, especially, opened up to Evan. I hope we'll see Jack in a future book!

I did tear up over Hudson's late wife's message to him. That was such a beautiful and emotional moment, and it was delivered perfectly by the narrator, Michael Dean, who produced a fantastic audio performance throughout the book. I'll definitely be listening to more of these audiobooks in future - I want to explore the previous books from Emerson, but also the next book featuring the quarterback, Lennox - I imagine he'll have quite the story to tell being such a funny character!! I can't wait for more.

I highly recommend this audiobook to anyone looking for a sweet romance with great characters and a fantastic narrator.

ALC review

Governor Hudson Gatlin was married to the love of his life, until they got the life ending diagnosis. Hudson is left to rear his two children Jack and Erin. He wonders if he will ever find another love.

Evan Ellis plays tight end for San Diego Storm. He is invited to a black tie event where the governor is in attendance. Meeting Hudson was memorable, when Hudson spilt bourbon all over his shirt. Mortified, Hudson offers to get him a new shirt.

Hudson’s sister-in-law, Attlee is his assistant. With them both struggling with Jack and his emotions, they wonder how to help. Jack adores football and his favourite player is Evan. They make arrangements for Jack to meet Evan while on a family trip to San Diego.

Hudson and Evan fall hard and fast. Hudson worries how him falling will affect his children, but Jack and Erin welcome him with open arms.

This is my first novel by Emerson Beckett, and it certainly won’t be my last.
Micheal Dean has done a first class job of narrating and bringing the characters of Hudson and Evan to life.
The writing was sublime, and flowed easily.
This was a beautiful bi-awakening story. Hudson accepted his new found sexuality with ease, knowing his late wife would approve. This wonderful low angst story was just what I needed.
I am looking forward to more in the San Diego Storm series.

🏈✨ Book Review: Hard Count by Emerson Beckett
🎧 Narrated by: Michael Dean

If you love MM sports romances with sizzling chemistry, forbidden desire, and emotional depth, Hard Count is about to become your new obsession.

Evan Ellis is the confident, charming tight end tearing up the NFL—and breaking hearts along the way. But beneath his cocky swagger is a man who knows exactly what (and who) he wants. Enter Hudson Gatlin: a widowed single father, the governor of Georgia, and the one person Evan can’t stop thinking about.

From the moment Evan sets his sights on Hudson, the sparks explode. But Hudson—reserved, principled, and still grieving his late wife —isn’t exactly looking for love, let alone with a younger, bi sexual football star. Still, Evan’s relentless charm, genuine heart, and unwavering patience slowly chip away at Hudson’s walls.

Michael Dean’s narration? Chef’s kiss. He captures Evan’s confidence and flirtatious swagger while also delivering Hudson’s complexity and restraint. Every emotion—from flirty banter to vulnerable confession—hits just right. Dean adds layers to the characters, making the tension and payoff all the more satisfying. There is also just the right out spice to heat your cheeks 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ A must listen

A quick, low angst, sweet read

I really enjoyed this newest sports romance from an author whose books I have always liked. This book introduces a new element to the existing football universe the author has created. It was nice to get re-acquainted with old characters as we got to know these new ones.

Hudson is the Governor of California. A widower with two teen age children he’s got a busy life but two years after his wife’s death he realizes he’s lonely. Enter NFL play Ellis who meets the governor at a gala and is immediately smitten but is willing to just be friends with the man he assumes is straight.

I love the way the relationship progresses without a lot of angst. They both quickly decide they want more than friendship. It’s long distance and it’s hard but they do the work to make it work. They put the needs of the kids first, focusing on Hudson’s son who has been moody and withdrawn. It’s nice to read a book where two people just work to make the relationship viable without a lot of manufactured drama. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

Gosh, I loved these precious guys so much! A straight (not so straight) single dad, who’s a governor, flirts with a guy without even knowing, and a top sportsman who’s head over heels for the adorable governor.

“The one who could be a doppelgänger for the actor who played Superman, Henry something.” I had to laugh 🤭

Hudson, the governor in question, is a busy man, raising two teenage kids, has to keep a lot of citizens happy, and above that, his heart beats so much faster when Evan Ellis is around.

What grows between them is just wonderful. Romance ‘pur sang’.

Romantic ohhh definitely and so satisfying to see the development.
The guys from the other books are here, I could cry with happiness!
I loooved this story, I smiled and smiled, and felt so satisfied!

Awesomely written story, with very lovable characters and great plot development!

"He’d broken down my walls, brick by brick, then began to rebuild a new Hudson Gatlin." - Hudson

"I needed someone to build a life with. Someone who looked at me like Hudson did." - Evan

Hudson has two children, Jack and Erin. Hudson lost his wife, and the children lost their mother (Carrie). Jack is a big fan of Evan Ellis. Evan is so sweet and really has become an important person in their lives. Hudson could always talk about Carrie with Evan, and I really loved that. Evan is a stable and sweet partner and (step)dad. Their relationship started fast after they first met; it felt easy and good. This is such a heartwarming book. Their relationship feels so natural, as if Evan has always been part of the family. I love that he took the time to form a connection with the kids and that they shared their own moments. They are all so loved! I received an audiobook version of this book.

Hudson is a widow, single father, and the Governor of California. Evan is a professional football player in San Diego. They meet at a gala, where Hudson accidentally spills his drink on Evan, and it was absolutely adorable how awkward Hudson was.

This was such a sweet story. Hudson and Evan were so cute together. I love how it showed them trying to make long distance and busy schedules work, and how much they missed each other. Jack and Erin, Hudson's children, were great. I loved their relationship with Evan. I love the family that the four of them became, and how supportive they were to each other. All the side characters were fantastic, especially Adley.

This was just a really wonderful book. It was low angst, super sweet, and I just flew through the pages!

Finding Love Again

Evan was exactly what Hudson needed in life after losing the first love of his life. He was such a sweetheart and was so good at including Hudson's kids in everything. I enjoyed watching them fall in love while navigating busy public careers. Evan really helped to bridge a gap that had formed between Jack and Hudson. I was so glad that the kids valued their dad's happiness. He was worried they wouldn't accept Evan, but they didn't hesitate. Adding to the previous found family aspect of these stories was phenomenal. I can't wait for Lennox to meet his match!!

Evan, a tight End for the Storm, knows he can only be friends with the Governor of California, Hudson. But as a bi-sexual man, he is overwhelmingly attracted to the straight widower with two kids. When Hudson and his family visit San Diego, Evan invites them to stay with him and their world changes. This is all about two famous people at the peak of their careers trying to mange family, jobs and a love affair. Emerson hit all the highs in this steamy book showing sports and politics can mix. With past characters involved this book was a touchdown for me. I received a copy of this book through BookSprout and this is my voluntary opinion.

As always, Emerson Beckett didn't disappoint!!!

Hudson and Evan are incredible characters who find love when they both weren't looking!

I'm usually not a fan of an insta love story, but this one is different! The way Emerson writes her characters, you're just instantly drawn to them, and in this case, Hudson and Evan are meant to be from the moment they meet!

This can be read as a standalone, but I highly encourage you to read both series that interconnect to this one! Just so you can love her guys, because they're all great!
