A good vampire werewolf book was just what I needed!

This is an urban paranormal romance that is fast paced and exciting. It’s a dual POV told in Darren (our newbie vampire) and Verity’s (one of the werewolf pack leaders) POV.

I love Verity’s attitude. She so snarky and grumpy and doesn’t hold back her thoughts. And then you have the polar opposite in Darren. He is bright and genuine and such a great cinnamon roll. They really are the grumpy/ sunshine trope at its finest.

The general plot of the story is that the Vampire, Werewolf’s and Witches/wizards all hate each other but also try to keep a front from the “humans” so they don’t find out about the paranormal beings living under their nose. They each have their own territory and if you cross over the line you may not return home. But everything is not exactly how it seems and that’s how our baby vamp and newly promoted werewolf end up in cahoots.

It looks like this is going to be a duology. The ending leaves you wanting the next book but does not leave you on a massive cliffhanger which I appreciated.

If you love a good urban paranormal romance then this is for you!

You wanted romance, but you didn't want sweet fairy tales?
Cynthia brings gore, angst, and characters with flaws that make them so very real in her latest urban fantasy.
Of Hearts and Hunters is gritty. Think intrigue, but without charming dresses and fancy soirees. Think Underworld, but without the skin tight leather that would never hold up in real life.
Darren and Verity feel like real people who are caught up in something so much bigger than them, and they react like real people to it. No sudden "I must save the world, for I am the chosen one". Instead we get "f- sake, if I have to do this there better be a lot of coffee involved." They have real doubts, real fears, and real conflicts. It's a slow burn, and Cynthia takes her time setting up these characters to allow us to get to know them. So, when the third act comes around, you are ROOTING for people.
When I finished the last page I was extremely frustrated to find that the book had ended, and I can't wait for the next one!

Of Hearts and Hunters

A thrilling enemies to lovers stories between vampires and werewolves and just to make things interesting there’s so magic in there as well ;)

The story pulled me in and I’m a sucker for a good enemies to lovers story. I enjoyed the forbidden alliance and sprinkle of romance of the story.

Verity was a tough chick trying to survive and figure out her place in everything. She was easy to relate to.

Darren, now him I enjoyed! I liked his inner conflicts and daily struggles he fought to overcome throughout the story. He was an interesting character and I look forward to reading more about him.

There were lots of great tropes in here to enjoy like; enemies to reluctant allies to something, PNR romance, werewolf x vampire, cinnamon roll MMC, fierce FMC, thrilling, secrets, banter, action-packed, and more!

I devoured this book. It took me back to our younger years. Underworld and True Blood vibes. I had Michael Sheen as Lucian saying "Half vampire half lycan stronger than both" in my mind on repeat throughout the entire read.

We had great world building throughout this book, immersed in a world of vampires, werewolves and magic. Told through the lens of our two main characters Darren and Verity. Darren the empathetic, compassionate, thoughtful vampire and our tough as nails werewolf Verity. As the story unfolds we learn more about the lore, the tribulations and major factions. And the slow burn between Darren and Verity .. The will they, won't they? Had me turning pages to see what happens next.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the ending has us reeling for the next one.

Of Hearts and Hunters is such a dark yet cozy almost nostalgic read. The vibes reminded me of all of my favorite paranormal shows and books with tons of Originals-esqe moments and a Romeo and Juliet twist that had me so hooked.

Verity's struggles with grief, ptsd and mental health are so raw and relatable. Darren was such a cinnamon roll vamp I just wanted to give him a hug! Briony though a side character stole the show for me with her sunshine to Verity's grump.

The worldbuilding and magic system were so tangible and easily woven it felt like I could step right into Cynthia's version of Vancouver.

I'm very excited to see what happens with my favorite wolf and vamp in the next book.

Three households all alike in kick-assness, in fair Vancouver where we lay our scene. . .

Take all the angst of being college-aged (you're an adult but are you really?), add in supernatural creatures trying to kill each other (gore included), and a Romeo & Juliet style romance subplot and you've got Of Hearts and Hunters. With tons of action, a little subterfuge, and one seriously cranky werewolf, the only thing missing from this novel is a Blade style fight— Oh, wait, it's got that too!

Of Hearts and Hunters and perfect for anyone looking for a fast-paced, action-packed paranormal fantasy.

Vampyrs and Werewolves, tense politics and alliances, and a budding romance combine to make a fun and intriguing read!

Verity is Korama - a werewolf, newly promoted to the leadership of her pack in the wake of yet another loss at the hands of their mortal enemies, Vampyrs. Darren is Vampyr - newly-turned, resisting his nature, and unaware of the turmoil he's been forced into.
An assassination attempt and tense political quagmire force them into an uneasy alliance.

This book had a wonderful supernatural structure overlapping our world and interesting characters navigating it. I enjoyed the action and intrigue! I'm looking forward to the next book in the duology.

Of Hearts and Hunters by Cynthia Brubaker

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I really enjoyed this urban fantasy. It has vampires, witches, wolves and slow burn romance.

Verity is a werewolf who is promoted to lead her pack after an attack by the vampires. Her mission is to assassinate the vampire Prince. Darren is a newly turned vampire. They, along with the magicena, live among the humans in Vancouver. I love the chemistry between Verity and Darren. She is a grumpy, tough werewolf, and he is a sunshiny vampire full of emotions. This was an action packed read reminiscent of the Originals. I can’t wait to see what the next book brings!

I absolutely LOVED this book! It was fast-paced and action packed with a sprinkle of (forbidden) romance. The slow burn between Darren and Verity had me giggling and kicking my feet when they were literally just holding hands. 🤪

If you like action packed plot, epic battles, or political intrigue, I would definitely recommend reading this book!

I'm ready to rip the beating heart right out of the chest of anyone who stands between me and a sequel! This has all the good stuff! Werewolves, vampires, and witches? I don't know why you would need to know any more than that but, if you're greedy, there's also secret & lies and a Romeo & Juliet style budding romance.

Thank you to the author for the ARC opportunity!

⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

What a fun, snappy, and refreshingly different take on vampire–werewolf romance!

Our FMC, Verity, is one of the top three leaders of the Korama (wolf shifters) alongside Megsie and Paxton. She’s fierce, sarcastic, and kick-ass in every way. I loved how Brubaker really leaned into her strength without making her untouchable—her voice had me smiling constantly, and her sass made every scene more enjoyable. The prose is witty and modern, giving this book a distinctly urban fantasy feel with a contemporary city backdrop, jobs, and technology woven in.

One of my favorite twists was how Cynthia portrayed the wolf transformation. It isn’t a seamless, magical moment—it’s painful, visceral, and vividly written. That whole full-moon scene had me wincing and fascinated at the same time.

Enter Darren: a shy, awkward, newly turned vampyr who also happens to be demisexual. He’s figuring out his “unalive-life” while being used as bait by his clan, all the while learning what it means to be a prince in a matriarchy. What I adored here was how much Darren contrasted Verity: she’s confident, powerful, and unapologetic, while he’s vulnerable and uncertain. Watching her step into the role of protector—saving him more than once—was such a refreshing reversal of the usual romantasy formula.

The dual POV worked beautifully too. Darren’s voice was so different from Verity’s—hesitant and thoughtful compared to her snappy, sassy narration. Sometimes dual POVs blur together, but here it really felt like two distinct characters.

The romance gave me Romeo and Juliet vibes, but with its own twist. It’s enemies-to-lovers… sort of. Darren isn’t truly “the enemy,” which makes the dynamic even more interesting—it’s mostly Verity’s ingrained animosity. And instead of the typical “slow burn,” the romance develops in a way that reflects Darren’s demisexuality. That perspective made their connection feel new and unique, showing the challenges and beauty of love from different sexual identities.

Why 4 stars? Purely vibes. I adore Cynthia’s style, but I could’ve done with fewer blood baths. Vampire gore just isn’t my thing 😅 But honestly, for a vampire–werewolf romantasy, it made sense, and it worked with the story.

Overall, Of Hearts and Hunters felt fresh, clever, and fun. Verity was a heroine I’d follow anywhere, and Darren completely charmed me in his awkward, quirky way. Bring on book 2 Cynthia! <3 (I'll continue to butcher the French in that one too.)

Favorite Quotes:

- “No vamps or sparklies in sight.”
- “Whenever I try the messy bun look, it always looks like I got into a fight with a bunch of oversized rats.”

This is a fun, fast-paced urban fantasy with strong paranormal romance vibes. It blends Underworld with The Vampire Diaries, giving us a world of supernatural rivalries, reluctant alliances, and young leads struggling to find their place.

I absolutely adored Darren—he’s the softest, sweetest vampire, and the demi representation was so well done. He’s gentle, intelligent, and emotionally grounded, which makes for a fantastic contrast with Verity, our tough-as-nails, deeply self-critical werewolf protagonist. Her struggles with self-worth and confidence were handled with a lot of care, adding so much emotional depth that will really resonate with like-minded people (waves hand around) to the action-heavy story. I adored the darker aspects at the end.

That said, I could have done without the random French and Aussie slang—it felt more cheesy than immersive. And the puns? Absolutely not. But despite those quirks, the story kept my interest the entire time. If you’re looking for a fast, engaging paranormal read with great rep and an intense supernatural romance, this one is worth picking up! I had a great time.

Thanks so much to R&R Booktours for the complimentary copy and opportunity to read and review. This review is honest and all opinions are my own.

OF HEARTS AND HUNTERS is a wild ride from beginning to end, perfect for fans of The Originals to sink their teeth into.

Our two main characters are Darren, a vampire who doesn't want to be a killing machine, and Verity, a werewolf with a prejudice against vampires because they've hurt everybody she loves. She's grumpy, he's sunshine, which makes for a nice change over the girl usually being the happy one! (Come on, everybody knows we're moodier than guys.) I loved every minute of getting to know them.

I loved the side characters just as much. Shout outs to Zander, Terry, Briony, and Bohdi, who brought more life to this story and had me laughing out loud a whole lot. You're bound to find at least one character in this novel you connect with - and you're going to really HATE some of them, too!

The world building here isn't crazy, for anyone who might be worried about that. This is an urban fantasy set against the backdrop of Vancouver, with three separate factions of magical beings dancing along territory borders and precarious treaties. The Vampyrs, Koramas (wolves), and Magicena live amongst humans, so you can jump right into this duet wondering if your neighbour might be secretly shifting during the full moon or feasting on blood bags when he's hungry. I love these kinds of worlds!

Without getting spoilery, you can definitely tell there's a second book coming when you finish this one, but it also doesn't end on a cliffhanger - so jump on in and get on this duet from the beginning! I'm so looking forward to reading the conclusion!

I am not one for a slow burn really but it made sense in this case and was done well. The snarky and hot headed FMC with the educated and understanding MMC was the reverse grumpy sunshine of my dreams.
It was a bit confusing with the werewolves being known as Koramas and their nobility being Korma, Kormi, and Kormo, but once I got past that everything else was straightforward. There is still quite a lot to be revealed and I am excited to continue this journey in the next book.
The dual POV was done nicely too. I did feel like the plot progressed more with Darren’s POV than Verity’s, but given Darren is on the inside, it made sense.
This is for Romeo and Juliet lovers for sure because the star crossed lovers of this is *chef’s kiss*

I loved the darkness and uniqueness of this book. You don't normally pair these two enemies together but CB made the storyline so different I just wanted more the more I read. The fact that the roles were reversed from your average fantasy story was a nice twist. The Korama was the tough gritty main character and the Vampyr was the softer, more delicate per say character.

Verity was fierce, snarky, and she wasn't afraid to give her opinion. Darren was a newbie vamp that didn't want the life that was forced upon him. Both characters continue to lose those they hold close over the centuries old war between the Vampyr and the Korama. There was crazy tension between the two factions and the ending made me want the next book asap. Definitely recommend this book!!

I really enjoyed Of Hearts and Hunters! The world-building was immersive, with Vampyrs, Koramas, and Magicena coexisting in a tense, hidden society.

Verity was a strong and compelling protagonist, and I loved how her journey challenged her beliefs about her enemies. Darren’s character added an interesting layer to the story, making their reluctant alliance all the more engaging.

The tension, action, and supernatural politics kept me hooked, and the twists kept me guessing. If you love urban fantasy with rich lore and high stakes, this one is definitely worth reading!

You can expect:
• Paranormal romance
• Forbidden romance
• Snarky FMC
• Demisexual MMC
• Vampires and Werewolves
• She falls first
• Morally grey characters

A Romantasy Worth Reading

I would 100% recommend this book if you love a book with a Romeo & Juliet vibe. This slow burn fantasy will keep you on the edge of your seat. Vampyr or Korama, which side will you choose? Will love win? Cynthia did a phenomenal job with this thrilling tale and I cannot wait until book 2 is out!

In "of Hearts and Hunters", Cynthia Brubaker has offered up a suspenseful supernatural romance that all fans of the genre will love. In a dual-POV, the story follows Verity Eodaoin, a high ranking Korama (werewolf) and Darren Pierce-Crane, a newly-turned Vampyr Prince. Set in modern Vancouver, the main characters are part of two feuding factions consistently involved in tit-for-tat vendettas that leave blood, carnage and heartbreak in their wake. Add the mysterious, magical, Magicena and the tensions rise. When they meet, Verity is struggling with her new responsibilities with a sharp temper and loads of self-doubt and Darren is still longing for his past 'human' life while being both revolted and drawn to his new position. The events surrounding a proposed "peace pact" draw them together and into a conspiracy that threatens to unleash even more violence. To complicate things, their growing attraction could lead to catastrophic personal consequences if it is ever uncovered. The actions scenes really stood out for me in this book, even a little more than the slow-burn romance ones. Sometimes Verity's snark makes you wonder how attracted she is to Darren but when balanced against her reasonable doubts about her place in everything, her character growth adds extra depth to the story. Darren's struggle with his feelings of revulsion about being a vampyr and his obsessive attraction to blood, make his resistance to his attraction to Verity believable. Combine with the excellent battle scenes, Of Hearts and Hunters makes an excellent and worthy read

This book hooked me right from the start. Darren, a Vampyr who doesn’t want to embrace his dark side, and Verity, a werewolf with a deep grudge against him, make an unlikely but compelling duo. Their slow-burn chemistry felt real—no hero complexes here, just two people trying to survive in a world full of danger and uncertainty.

The world-building is seamless, and I loved how Vancouver felt alive with Vampyrs, werewolves, and mages just blending into the everyday. The side characters were a blast too—some I loved, some I hated, but all of them made the story richer.

By the end, I was so ready for the next book. Can’t wait to see where this goes!

Special thank you to R&R Book tours and the author for having me on the ARC team for this one! <3

I really enjoyed this Vampyr x Korama (vampire x werewolf) forbidden love PNR!

I loved the representaion, slow burn to steamy romance, Romeo x Juliet vibes, unique and intriguing magic, and the mystery surrounding the 'sparklies' (which is another magical race within the book, similar to witches).

I cannot wait to find out what happens to Verity and Darren next!

I'm begging you to go check this one out! If you're looking for a book with vampyrs and werewolves that's fun, cheeky, and clever, this one is definitely for you! And if you also like heartbreak and the anxiety that Breaking Dawn part 2 gave you (iykyk) then you 100% need to pick this up!

Set in modern day Vancouver, Verity is the new kormo of her pact, while Darren is a newly turned vampyr prince questioning his role and title in this new life. When these two begin an unlikely alliance, loyalties are tested and secrets are uncovered on both sides.

Darren is the most lovable character ever. As a new vamp, he struggles with his morals and the humanity of it all, but still is such a lighthearted character, especially in his interactions with others. It was easy to immediately root for him, and I just constantly wanted to jump into the book and give him a hug. He stands for peace in a world where peace is far gone.

If Darren is the most lovable, then Verity is the least lovable, but I knew from page 1 that she was going to be my girl! She is such a spitfire and has the best personality, and I'm probably only saying that because she talks so similarly to me so of course I think she's awesome! Her interactions with Darren were so entertaining too! She was constantly insulting him, and that's my love language right there, so I was here for it!

If you loved TVD and Twilight, this one is for you!
