So begins Sanders' journey from his conception to this commencement, a span of time that encompasses the emergence of the atomic age, 1943-1962, in the small and traditional village of Prosperity, Georgia. Among his experiences are his first haircut (when his girlish locks are shorn by a father returning from WWII), his first attempts to be a worthy first grader, his reactions to his first family disaster, his education as a self-taught chicken farmer, his introduction to contemporary parenting through the foster care program, and his involvement with the fight for justice being waged by his friends in the black community. Second Born is a tale of growth and maturity as young Sanders Cobb and his whole family find ways to adjust to their ever changing world.
