Adrenaline explores the hunger for adventure that is as basic a need for some people as food, drink, or love . . . some people crave an adrenaline rush the way a heroin addict craves a fix.
Two corporate One, Steve Dern, becomes CEO; the other, Geoff Mann, ends up on the street, where his taste for extreme sports and a chance encounter with a desperate young prostitute show him that murder delivers the best rush of all. Then, Geoff thrusts Steve into a dangerous game with Steve’s wife, Lisa, as the prize. To save her, Steve must find a way to make Geoff feel pain. To experience fear. He must scare a man who has just discovered how much he likes to kill.
Adrenaline is a no-holds-barred thriller that lives up to its name.
I dunno; this is a tough one to rate. It was an action packed page turner; but so much was unbelievable. Both Geoff & Steve are high ranking officers in a company whose leader is moving towards retírement. Both are seeking, and expecting, to be named VP and the defacto next president. Jansten, the head of the conglomerate, saw the two men as both ambitious, both capable of taking over; but he chose Steve because he knew he would do everything above board; do it right. Geoff, he knew, was more like himself. He had got things done however, regardless if anyone got hurt or a few rules were broken. In his old age, he didn’t want that for his company. When Geoff goads another employee to do something inherently dangerous, Jansten fired him out right. Instead of doing the normal thing and suing for wrongful dismissal, Geoff goes off on an adrenaline fueled rampage; doing all kinds of ridiculous stunts to get back at Steve and Jansten. Certainly an entertaining read; but not very believable. If you’re looking for a fast paced read with lots of dangerous risk taking; this is the book for you!
Picking up where he left off in The Guardian, Eidson again uses a kidnapping set in Boston as the vehicle for a nonstop suspense ride. This time, the victims are 30-something couple Steve and Lisa Dern. After boat-manufacturing executive Steve beats out ruthless, thrill-addicted Geoff Mann in a campaign for corporate president of Jansten AssociatesAthen gets him fired for reckless investingAMann vows revenge. Not only does nutty Mann kidnap Lisa, he turns the ransom-exchange process into a Machiavellian plot to take over much of the Hub's drug tradeAand along the way kills two men, the CEO who fired him and an assistant pimp who tries to boss around the hooker who snags Mann's heart.
The trail of bodies eventually leads to a mano a mano waterfront confrontation between the two yuppie antagonists, with satisfying if predictable results. Eidson's action scenes are charged with exquisite tension, but the cartoonish Mann too often serves merely as a convenient excuse for notching up the violence. And with a plot and characters so like their counterparts in The Guardian, many readers may find themselves suffering narrative deja vu.
The scene is greater Boston; the time, the present; the theme, revenge. Geoff Mann, Wharton MBA and "a terror in the real estate world," suddenly finds himself passed over in his quest to become president and CEO of Jansten Enterprises, a multinational conglomerate. This insult drives him into a frenzy. In a fit of pique and because he's flat broke, he takes up with a ready-for-anything hooker and her low-life pimp, kidnaps his rival's wife, and demands a ransom of $150,000 for her safe return. Eidson (The Guardian, LJ 9/15/96) invests this old pay-up-or-else routine with a couple of fresh if not revolutionary twists, and readers who are not put off by brutality and bloodshed, quick-and-dirty couplings, and characters who should have their mouths soaped will find enough excitement to follow the tale to the last unwinding of the stout main thread of the plot.
Thriller - Steve Dern and Geoff Mann are competitors to replace the ill President of their corporation. When Geoff's actions at a company event cause him to be fired, he becomes completely unhinged. He kidnaps Steve's wife and engages in a cat-and-mouse game with his adversary.
