I read Dark Mercy last year and really liked it. I was struck by the subtext of the relationship, how Angeline seemed desperate and uncomfortable with herself, and how submissive she felt to me. I know it seems like she's pretty aggressive from her actions, but they just seemed to come from a place of desperation and loneliness. I loved how Hadrian rejected the entire thing outright, and it was really pretty tragic. I liked that.
Here, we have Angeline and Hadrian again, with different circumstances. Hadrian is like the cat of the supernatural world, he does what he wants. He doesn't follow rules, or conventions, he just gets into stuff, does whatever he likes, and suffers the consequences. Angeline, on the other hand, is like a leaf on the wind, being blown about, buffeted and tossed around by forces greater than her, and has now turned up as an Angel, when she's "Elevated" by Rodolfo, the books "villain".
Heaven, in the preternatural world, is not a place you'd want to be, for the most part. Its sterile, boring, and stuffy, and worse, judgmental and cold. Angeline doesn't get along well there, but she's trying.
I love both Hadrian and Angeline. They are perfect for each other, but Hadrian takes quite some time to get over himself, in part due to Angeline's mistakes in Dark Mercy. Angeline, on the other hand, is so awesome. I don't always love the heroines in Zoe Winters' work, but she's perfect in this one.
The D/s subtext is really good. Angeline is such a sweet hearted girl, and she's already given herself to Hadrian 60 years before. She is willing to take anything he'll let her have to be with him.
So, I loved the characters, and the romance, what about the plot? It was interesting for sure. We have a war between supernaturals and humans, with the angels threatening to bring on the apocalypse. Our intrepid band staves off the apocalypse, but the war continues.
Father Hadrian and Angeline dance around their issues and the tension between them in this book. When the angels discover she has given her precious blood to the vampire she is tortured and then banished. Hadrian and her have a lot to resolve but he realizes he feels something for his guardian angel but he can’t sort that out for the problem of the coming apocalypse which finds him once again joining forces with the other preternaturals to save the world. Spicy level about a 3.
1st reading: It was good to learn Hadrian's background and to see his transformation. Gotta say I'm intrigued by what Linus and Anthony may have done to Angeline when she was first turned into a vampire, but I'm guessing we won't see that. Also intrigued by Kurt the warrior angel, but I'm guessing we won't be seeing him - or Rodolfo - again.

This is book five in the Preternaturals series by Zoe Winters. While you can read this book and follow along without reading the previous books in the series, I highly recommend reading the other books, just because I enjoy them. Not only are they as good as this one, you also get the backstory to characters. There was also a short prequel to this story, Dark Mercy, that Ms. Winters was gracious enough to include because it was so integral to the plot of this story. Since both were included in this ebook, I'm going to include both stories in my review.
This is the story of a nun turned vampire, Angeline. She was turned by a very bad vampire who didn't treat her with kindness. When the prequel starts, Angeline has escaped him after years of his torment and the torment of his friends. Angeline is lost and lonely and looking for a kindred spirit. She comes across Father Hadrian. What a better soulmate than another man of the cloth. She turns him without his consent, just like she was. Needless to say, he was not happy about this. When all is said and done, he locks her in the sun for the day.
We start book five and "Forbidden" finding out that Angeline didn't die, but was ascended. They made her into an angel. You would think as a former nun, she would be ecstatic by this turn of events. Being an angel isn't all that its cracked up to be. She has yet to get over Father Hadrian. She spends a ton of time watching him from Heaven.
When Angeline shows up to warn Hadrian that the angels plan to side with humans in the battle to destroy all paranormal creatures. she seeks to get forgiveness for turning him many years before. She is willing to do anything to get this forgiveness, including giving him her forbidden and powerful blood.
This story brings back all the character we saw in the first four books, plus a some new ones. While this story isn't the most action-packed or suspenseful PNR book I've ever read, it is still a good story with an interesting plot. The characters have personality. The story is well written, as I would expect from reading this series. There is mild BDSM, but this isn't an author jumping on the bandwagon. If you've ever read her other pen name, Kitty Thomas, you know this is not her first foray into the BDSM world.
Warning: Do not attempt to read this book before bed if you work tomorrow unless you like looking like a zombie on too much caffeine.
I started reading Forbidden last night and thought to read I figured I'd read 20 pages or until I started getting sleepy. It didn't quite work out that way I turned the last page just as the sun rose this morning. It was that good. I got totally lost in the story and lost track of time, it's been awhile since that has happened.
Forbidden by Zoe Winters is book 5 in The Preternaturals series. Yes, it can be read as a stand-alone. I promise you won't get lost when characters from previous books in the series are introduced. A bit of a warning though once you're done you're going to want to read the earlier books just because their stories sound so intriguing. There are actually two parts to the story of the former nun turned vampire Angeline and Father Hadrian.
The first a novella titled, "Mercy" and is included in the book as a prequel. Thumbs up to Ms. Winters for that move. Sixty years after turning Father Hadrian into a vampire Angeline is back in Forbidden only now she is an angel! Nice move huh? Despite having a new life Angeline is not over Hadrian and has been keeping tabs on him from heaven.
Father Hadrian is not your typical evil spawn of Satan vampire but he has managed to make some enemies and when he is attacked despite it being forbidden Angeline comes down on them well like an avenging angel and that's when the story heats up.
Forbidden is a great read, I highly recommend it and am looking forward to the next book in this series.
I had not read the previous books in this series and was afraid I wouldn't be able to keep up, but I was able to follow along with the story without feeling I missed something. I really enjoyed this book. The overall story was thoughtful and very well written. The whole of the story is the characters struggle for forgiveness, but I loved the undercurrents of good v's evil and the fine line that flows between the two.
I absolutely can't wait to get started on the rest of the series.
Loved it... While this was the first book I read of this series, I did not feel as I was missing anything, other than to say I will be buying books 1-4 now! This is an an amazing love story that takes decades to get both parties to see it!
