A Renaissance fair in rural Louisiana is not the kind of place you’d expect to encounter any real danger. All the dragons, jousting, sword fighting, and public executions are only make believe, right?

Our favorite lettering artist, Mila Breaux, is not so sure about that. When she receives a mysterious note summoning her to hand letter the signage for the local Ren fair, some of the Dark Age performances seem to be way more realistic than she bargained for.

Particularly when it comes to the trial and capital punishment of a young woman: the head artisan of the Ren fair’s crafting guild.

Joined by her trusty friend, Cherie Mamou, a Cajun girl who claims to talk to animals, Mila will need to get to the bottom of what is rotten in the kingdom. And she’ll need to do it while steering clear of crooked royalty, fearsome knights, trained peregrine falcons, and a dime-store Shakespeare impersonator who may want to see the girls tarred and feathered! Together, Cherie and Mila seek the truth about the artisan’s “mock” execution, and are met at every turn with fierce resistance.

Can they figure out the mystery before it is too late, or will they fall victim to the brutality of Medieval times?

"Murder in Gothic" is a cozy mystery with a unique setting, sharp characters, and lovely prose. So, raise a mead horn, sheathe your sword, and prepare to engage in an epic adventure full of unexpected twists and turns. This short novel is sure to tease your brain and put your deduction skills to the test in a most charming manner, right up until the end!

The adventure is just one-click away! So hit the buy button and rejoin Mila and the gang as they unwrap yet another mystery. This is a standalone novel with a complete, self-contained story arc. It can be read on its own, but readers of the entire sequence of “The Lettering Detective Cozy Mystery Series” are sure to have an even richer experience. Grab a warm blanket and a cup of it is time to head back down to bayou country and slay some dragons!

I love how Lisa Pevey picks a cool place for a murder to happen and makes the murder investigation fun and adventurous. Through it all, there were still a few times when I was worried about Mila and Cherie's life, especially at the end. I didn't see anything coming at all. I am very excited to read her short story following Mila and Cherie at a fan convention. I am always interested in the places they go to, and that makes it even more fun to read.

Good Premise, But Just...No....

I hoped for good things from this mystery since the plot, a murder at a Ren Faire, investigated by a calligrapher, sounded refreshingly different.

I was doomed to disappointment.

I can usually dismiss one or two unlikely circumstances or behaviors for the sake of a plot line, but I just can't get past downright ridiculous. Are you kidding me?

No. Just no. Deleting this from my Kindle.
