The Longest Four Years of My Life: A View from the Field by a Black Fed in the Trump Administration

Rate this book
This powerful memoir offers an unflinching look at the intersection of race, politics, and identity through the lens of a Black man who has served under five U.S. presidents, from Bill Clinton to Joe Biden. Written by a former political appointee who navigated the halls of power, this book explores the intricacies of working within predominantly white, top-tier political environments while confronting the harsh realities of racial injustice and privilege in America. With candor and personal insight, the author reflects on his experiences, offering a unique perspective on the policies and political landscapes that have shaped modern America. He shares stories from his time with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, where he worked alongside civil rights icons like Dr. Joseph Echols Lowery, before transitioning to high-level roles within the federal government. While examining the actions and rhetoric of Republican and Democratic administrations, the author doesn’t shy away from criticizing policies and figures, including Donald Trump, whose presidency revealed deep divides in American society and governance. This book goes beyond the conventional political narrative, blending personal anecdotes with sharp political analysis. The author challenges the status quo by offering a critical view of the shifting political climate, highlighting issues such as economic inequality, racial tensions, and the treatment of marginalized communities. Ultimately, this memoir serves as both a personal history and a broader commentary on the complex, often painful realities of race and politics in America. For those seeking a strictly political account, this is not the book for you. However, for readers willing to engage with the nuanced experiences of living as a Black American in a country defined by its history of racial and political struggles, this work offers an honest, thought-provoking, and sometimes uncomfortable journey.

I have had the privilege of knowing Deric Gilliard personally, and this book shows the deep strength and courage he carried every day working in the Trump Administration. As someone who cares deeply about justice and fairness, reading his story was both heartbreaking and inspiring. What’s more is that while this book recounts his experiences, it only scratches the surface of his life and complete body of work.

This book is not just about politics—it’s about real human struggles. Deric shared how it felt to be a Black federal worker in an environment that often felt hostile and unwelcoming. He opens up about the pain and challenges he faced, but also about his hope and determination to continue serving despite it all. Reading his experience will help the reader see the true cost of injustice and why we need more honest voices fighting for change.

The writing feels like a conversation with a close friend (which I consider Deric) who tells you hard truths in a way that you can understand and feel. Deric’s story is a powerful reminder that behind every policy are real people who feel the effects in profound ways. This book challenges the reader to confront how racism and injustice show up even in places where fairness should be a priority. It will challenge anyone open to doing this work, especially the necessary internal work, to think about how race and power shape our lives, especially in places that are supposed to protect everyone equally.

This book will inspire reflection on race, power, and what it means to keep fighting for justice even when the odds are against you. If you care about justice, equality, or want to hear what many never get to share, this book is a page-turner. It’s powerful, real, and a call for all of us to stand up and make a difference.

Thank you, Deric, for your courage, then and more importantly now. More than ever, we need voices like yours who will stand up to the Nebuchadnezzars of today and say, “Even if…”
