The bronc in the arena can kill, but it takes a man to destroy...
Daniel Blake and Tristan Wells are committed to their two-year relationship, and to keeping it a well-hidden secret. When a competitor lets them know their secret isn’t so well-hidden after all, the ground isn’t the only thing that comes up to hit hard. Danny’s facing scrutiny from rodeo management for alleged misconduct, and Tristan thinks that Ben Kincaid from Crow Creek Ranch is just the man to help ferret out who has it in for them. Wyoming isn’t known for being tolerant of “alternative lifestyles” and men who take on broncs and bulls for a living aren’t strangers to playing rough, in and out of the arena.
With their future on the line, Tristan and Danny’s relationship will be tested by those out to see an eight-second ride turn into a world of failure. Ben’s determined to have his new friends’ backs, in more ways than one. Even if they survive the spills and attacks, will Danny and Tris’s future survive Ben?
Nya Rawlyns cut her teeth on sports-themed romantic comedies and historical romances. She found her true calling writing about the wilderness areas she has visited but calls home—in that place that counts the most, the heart.
She has lived in the country and on a sailboat on the Chesapeake Bay, earned more than 1000 miles in competitive trail and endurance racing, taught Political Science to unwilling freshmen, and found an avocation in materials science.
When she isn’t tending to her garden or the horses, the cats, or three pervert parakeets, she can be found day dreaming and listening to the voices in her head.
I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was not what I was expecting, and that's not a bad thing. Daniel Blake and Tristan Wells are two men in the rodeo circuit who managed to find love in an unusual place. Knowing how their fellow rodeo players would react, they knew they had no choice but to keep their relationship a secret. After two years, they are tired of hiding and are ready to settle down. But not everyone is the "live and let live" type. Somehow, Danny and Tristan's relationship has become known - and by the worst possible person in the circuit.
While I was expecting the antagonist to do what they did, I still enjoyed the ride to get there. Helping Danny and Tristan during this tough time is a fellow hand named Ben - Benny. It's clear Ben likes Tristan, and doesn't find Danny hard on the eyes either. He's made it clear he wouldn't be opposed to exploring their mutual desire. Personally, I didn't care for the potential of making Danny and Tris into a threesome. I loved their relationship they way it was, but it's their life and they had to choose what was best for them.
In the end, the good guys triumphed and these men managed to find their HEA.
I was not expecting how heavy the rodeo speak would be. I personally don't like rodeos and I can't say I cared to learn all about them or how they operated. At first I was ok with it, but the more I read, the more I glossed over those facts. I didn't care and, for me, it distracted from the story of Danny and Tristan. For some, the rodeo tutorial might be too much, and I can understand that. Frankly, skipping all that didn't detract from the story. I still knew what was going on. I didn't need to know that Danny hooked, and tightened, and tested, and released the rope, or told the rider the horse was going to push left - or whatever he said and did. My brain went on overload and I had to take a small break from the story.
3 stars. If you like cowboys and rodeos, and like to see two men fight to get their HEA, this is the book for you.
: This is the fifth book in the series and stands alone pretty well. If you read them all in order you would have a better understanding of the supporting characters and how Danny and Tristan met, but having said that there is adequate backstory on the main characters so that you can enjoy this story.
Danny is a Flankman for the ranch he works at and is moving up. He has dreams for him and Tristan to start their own business and to be together as partners in every sense of the word. Tristan wants that just as much as Danny if not more.
Danny’s boss gives him the opportunity to make some extra money acting as an agent for him in a rodeo in Wyoming. Tristan goes along so they can get a little alone time. Crow creek is a stopover so they can meet a man to see about breeding a mare that will give Danny and Tristan the beginning of their dreams.
They meet Ben and there is an attraction between the three men. Ben goes with them to the rodeo to help out and their friendship bonds strengthen. But is it more than friendship for all three men? Will this strengthen or harm the relationship with Danny and Tristan.
There are twists and turns galore in this book. I was on the edge of my seat wondering what was gonna happen next with nearly every page turn. I loved Danny and Tristan and the contrast between the two men. Their relationship is smokin hot and the added tension with Ben made it even hotter. I loved the rodeo action and the love scenes and fight scenes were like watching a movie. I really liked the sex. It was smoking hot without being overly explicit and gave the feeling of emotion between the men.
If you like rodeos, ranchers, vets, horses, spunky teenage girls, lots of twists and turns, a strong committed relationship and some smokin hot man-sex this is for you.
Flankman is the fifth book in the Crow Creek series – though Ash and Oak only appear briefly and a small minority of the story actually takes place on the Ranch. One of the main reasons that I have fanatically followed Nya Rawlyns’ cowboy series is that I know what to expect when I read these books. This is not to say that every story is the same. There are recurrent themes, particularly homophobia, but ranching, rodeos and racing are male dominated worlds in which people are threatened by gay romances. More than anything I have loved Nya Rawlyns’ men and Flankman’s main characters, Danny and Tristan, are no exception. These are two men already in love but sneaking moments together, rather than facing prejudice and discrimination. Despite everything, we never doubt Danny and Tristan’s commitment to each other, even when Ben Kincaid enters their lives! For fans of Ben, or those still unsure of him, Flankman is a wonderful story. Ben may not be the central character, but his role is enough that we really empathise with him. We see him on the periphery of Danny and Tristan’s romance. They offer him an unconditional friendship and time away from Crow Creek, where he has been wrapped up in his love for Oak. Nya Rawlyns gives us enough that we desperately long for Ben’s HEA. Flankman is probably the most technical of the books because of Danny and Tristan’s roles on the rodeo circuit. However, Nya Rawlyns clearly has a solid knowledge of horses and racing that gives Flankman more credibility. Whilst this fifth novel is missing some of the rampant sex scenes we may have enjoyed in the previous stories, Nya Rawlyns more than makes up with this in emotional quality. Danny and Tristan simply want what many of us take for granted; to show their love in public and not only behind closed doors. Flankman is subtly thought-provoking and Nya Rawlyns not only manages to capture our imaginations, but our hearts as well.
Nya Rawlyns knows her audience. She writes her characters as MEN. I could feel the testosterone wafting from my Kindle.
I loved that I didn't have to know anything about rodeos...I didn't get lost under a lot of terminology I didn't understand.
This is a fantastically written story. If you like your MM with a story line and not just sex scenes strung together, read this book. You'll be glad you did.
An awesome read filled with suspense and action that keeps you turning pages well into the night. Two cowboys, Daniel Blake and Tristan Wells, who truly care for each other, face many trials and tribulations as they search for the answer to their future together. I definitely need to read more of this author's work!
