An outstandingly readable account of the Allied campaign in the Southwest Pacific Area 1942-44. Adm Barbey tells the story with a good mix of tactical lessons learned as well as operational and strategic perspective. I think he’s a bit too gentle on MacArthur, but this is a forgivable stance given Barbey’s role. Anyone who wants to know what challenges we’ll face in the next war in the First Island Chain and Western Pacific will want to read this, ideally in combination with Evan Mawdsley’s excellent Supremacy at Sea, which describes the actions of Task Force 58.
