need this as a physical copy and fast!

i wasn’t expecting to like this so much because it is hard for me to read tone through manga sometimes but i think this started off super strong. i loved the main character chihiro like he’s so cute and i like the broody guy. i like the side characters and im sensing a found family here. in a way this reminds me of jjk in the sense of quality and how fun it is. can’t wait to continue on

"That scar... You could get it treated, right? It really stands out. Are you sure you don't want to do something about it?"
"Every morning, when I wash my face and look in the mirror, I see this scar. And I remember that day. So every day I start the morning with a fresh hatred."

Kagurabachi is a title that I had my eye on for quite some time already. It's not the first manga series that I am reading, but the first one that I'm going in completely blind, not backed up by the anime adaptation (it's going to get one soon, though, I'm so excited!). I love swordsmen (Ichigo, Zoro, Levi, etc., all are the coolest and the greatest) and I love stories centered around sword fights. And the volume one's cover looks so incredibly tough, I had to pick it up eventually! ;)

"They have to know what dad believed. I'll show them. I'll cut them all down." [Chihiro]

Kagurabachi takes place in Japan where sorcerers reside. Fifteen years ago a great war called the Seitei War ended by six legendary powerful swords made by a unique swordsman, Kunishige Rokuhira. The story starts when Kunishige gets killed by a group of powerful sorcerers when they show up to steal his six legendary special swords. Those swords are known as Enchanted Blades, who were imbued with sorcery and have some special powers. Kunishige's son, Chihiro, makes a vow to retrieve all the swords and to get revenge for his death.

"Don't forget that. Your dad saved a lotta people. He's a hero."
"Yeah... I heard that hundreds of times."
"Well, you always look happy to hear it."

Chihiro's not like any other MC I have seen so far. He's not bright and energetic, he's not foolish, he's not constantly hungry, he's not trying to stand at the top, he's not looking for trouble. He's more like an adult than a child, despite his age. He's the one taking care of the house and taking care of his father. He has a clear goal in his life and it's to become a swordsman, like his father. With the attack of the sorcerers, the illusion of his peaceful life shatters and, drowned in his grief and need for revenge, he lets himself become a killer to find the missing swords and to find justice for his beloved father's death.

"Who are they? Do they know how much dad cared about the katana?" [Chihiro]

He's known for his deadpan expression. He wears it like an armour, but it's not like he's emotionless. He expresses his feelings in precious little moments, if not through his mouth then through his eyes. He cares. He cares a lot about his father and about the missing swords - his father's legacy. When he's swinging his blade, it's mostly with an intent to kill, but he's also a protector. He looks intense (his aura is unmatched, truly) and scary, but he has a very kind heart, reaching out when he sees that someone's in trouble. I like him a lot already.

"The Hishaku... Those guys are monsters. If you wanna pick a fight with monsters like that, you're insane!"
"Do I seem sane to you?"

I mentioned his aura already, but seriously, the words are not enough to express his intensity, you have to see it for yourself. The guy is truly insane, not only when he fights - he can just stand still in front of his opponent and he will still have an aura. People say that Solo Leveling's Jinwoo is the king of the aura, but in my opinion Chihiro wins this competition (this comes from me, the Ichigo Kurosaki fan, who has a lot of aura himself). He's an outstanding fighter, making trouble for his opponents wherever he goes. I love how cool he is, but what I love about him the most, I think, is the manifestation of his sword's power. The goldfish. It's so cute and wholesome, and it's a beautiful connection to his father. I appreciate it a lot.

He's not a lone wolf hunting down the bad guys, he has a helper in the shape of his family's friend, Shiba. There are other people who show up and decide to help, but I will not spoil anything. All you need to know is that they are all very interesting characters, having powers on their own, and I'm looking forward to getting to know more about them.

Now, about the sorcery. It's something I had no idea about when I picked up this manga. It had swords, that was obvious, but sorcery? It was a very positive surprise. I think the author did a great job showing all the unique powers, as scary as they can be. It's not something limited to using enchanted swords, no, it's limited by a life force. Anybody can become a sorcerer, but their strength depends on that force. I wonder if there are some negative consequences of using it. Anyways, the images of using sorcery shown throughout Volume 1 were incredibly cool and I can't wait to see them animated. Some panels reminded me heavily of Demon Slayer (which is great, because I love this series a lot).

I also have to point out the brutality shown throughout the story. It has a lot of violence and blood, and by a lot, I genuinely mean a lot. Chihiro's not holding back when he fights, and his opponents aren't any better in that regard. There is so much cruelty that people need to deal with, because Japanese streets are basically ruled by ruthless gangs backed up by the powerful (often psychopathic) sorcerers. But if I, the scaredy-cat, can read it and not faint, then anybody can. And it's worth spending time with. I am so excited to dive more into this world, it has so much potential! ☺️

EN Another excellent series released by Devir in Portugal.

Here we get a blend of sorcery and katana combat, very much in the vein of Kill Bill by Tarantino.

Chihiro is the son of a traditional Japanese swordsmith, responsible for crafting several exceptional pieces—among them, half a dozen katanas imbued with magical powers. When his father is murdered by an organization of sorcerers, Chihiro takes up the katana left to him and sets out on a path of revenge.

I picked up some John Wick vibes, in the sense that there is a whole organized underworld where contracts are issued for sorcerers to carry out.

Overall, this introduces a fresh and compelling world, populated by charismatic characters. It definitely leaves me wanting to explore it further and see how the story develops—there’s a lot of promise here.

What a truly powerful and dynamic intro into this shonen and when I say they don’t hold back on the bloodshed, I mean it’s complete ninja assassin up in these pages and I’m totally here for it, I think I found a new favorite to start running through soon. In just the first eight opening chapters of this volume, you get an incredible lore and backstory, these seven insanely cool mystically magical katanas, an angsty underdog protagonist with a innocent sweet little girl to protect, and a seemingly magic wielding yakuza underworld antagonists that give me modern demon slayer vibes. 4.25/5

P.S. that drop onto the table spin and decapitation of those four or five guys was just oozing with finesse and one of the coolest black and white still frames I’ve seen in manga to date.

A fast paced and somewhat rushed introduction to another formulaic shonen. The action sequencss are fantastic, but the rest leaves a lot to be desired. Most of the humour misses the mark and the plot is pretty predictable despite being an easy and entertaining read. Those who like this brand of story telling will definitely find something they like, and whilst it's not anything overly new, there are characters to invest in and some eye-popping panels to enjoy.

DNF chapter 20.

I usually like fast paced action, but this manga is just pure ADHD. It's an unending string of battles, and during each battle the story keeps cutting away every few pages.

Battle starts, the protagonist initiates an attack, which is about to hit an antagonist -- cut to a conversation elsewhere -- cut to the attack hitting, then the antagonist launches an attach -- cut to a conversation elsewhere -- cut to the attack being about to hit -- cut to flashback -- cut to the attack hitting. And repeat.

It's an approach to storytelling I don't think I've seen before, so I understand how the uniqueness appeals to some people. But so far it's too much for me.

After all the meme-ing of this manga earlier in the year, I kind of expected this to be your standard shonen—semi-serious, sort of silly—and it definitely is at points. But, it’s also oddly thoughtful too? In the same vein that series like “Jujutsu Kaisen” and “Tougen Anki” are unexpectedly genuine for the genre.

I really liked this first volume.

In it, we’re introduced to Chihiro Rokuhira. He’s the son of a famous swordsmith—Kunishige. His father crafted the six enchanted blades that put an end to the nation’s war several years prior. Since the war’s end, Kunishige has taught Chihiro how to craft and wield blades. He has instilled in Chihiro a deep respect for the power a blade gives their wielder. Taking up a katana doesn’t make you powerful in and of itself; rather, it’s what you wield your blade in service of that gives you strength.

When his father is murdered and his six enchanted blades stolen, Chihiro vows to do everything in his power to reclaim those blades and honor his father’s ideals.

So, this is a far more gripping and compelling story than I expected—and I’m SO here for it.

I appreciate a lot of what this story is doing so far.

The themes, the characters, the storytelling, the ACTION—so fluid and so dynamic—it’s all really working for me. I love these types of stories that are ostensibly about epic missions and intense match-ups but have this strong, emotional foundation.

Chihiro’s story is so deeply sad. His grief is as palpable as his determination. You see it in how he derives so little pleasure from these skirmishes.

His character is deceptively simple. I can see how some readers may gloss over the emotional aspects of his character in lieu of consuming the fight scenes, the blood and guts. But, I’m really interested in seeing how Chihiro’s character grows over time. Will he always be that traumatized, little boy covered in his father’s blood?

Anyway.

I genuinely liked this.

For a first volume, it’s pretty strong. It’s coherent and it established a distinct narrative right from the start. Readers are immediately immersed in this world of enchanted blades, sorcerers, and influential forces seeking to consolidate power. It’s good.

The art style may be a little off-putting for some readers? It’s got a “choppiness” to it. But, I don’t personally think it’s that detracting from everything else this story offers~

A fantastic start to a series. Yes, it’s reminiscent of a lot of classic shonen series, but it does have enough to set it apart too. The art is perfect for the tone of the series, and the fights are pretty good. This is definitely one that will become huge VERY soon.

5/5 estrellas.

Definitely a new promising shounen series. However, the story is all over the place. For now we know the story is about revenge & enchanted swords. But other than that, this was a very messy start. Not enough explanation and too much things happen to the point that I feel confused on the 'world-building' and the power system that happens. It doesn't elaborate enough in between the panels. Of course this is my early judgement for vol 1 only. Hopefully the storytelling will get better on the next vol.

But the manga art style is gorgeous!! The detail is insane. Some of their manga panels remind me of Tougen Anki art style. Overall, 3.8 🌟 I need more!

A solid introduction. I would have liked more info on how the sword works, but I’m sure we’ll get that in due time. The art was easy to follow and the world building seems pretty cool. Definitely will continue with this series for now

Pre-read comments: I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about this story so I’m exited to check it out. I’ve had it preordered for months but forgot to add it to goodreads

review with little spoilers

i started this manga in anticipation for the anime that was announced for next year because i had heard great things about it.

the plot of this manga centers around the son of a master swordsmith, who created six enchanted blades during times of war. after the war his father hunts down and goes into hiding with the blades. when chihiro’s father is killed, he promises to seek revenge for his death alongside his father’s seventh and final enchanted blade.

this volume practically follows chihiro as he investigated a lead that can lead him to one of his father’s enchanted swords. we got plenty of fighting scenes in this volume which i am particularly enjoying as it is very centered around sword fighting.

i am really excited to see where the story will go and to learn more about the magic system. while we have been briefly introduced to sorcerers and enchanted blade smiths/wilders, i wish to know more about each and i’m sure it will be explained as it is an integral part of story.

i honestly was already intrigued by the premise before reading and the first volume definitely solidified my want to read it. i will not only be continuing with the volumes/chapters that have been released, i also can’t wait what they will do with the anime.

1.5 ⭐

I thought it was at best, okay. Most of all though, I thought it was extremely and painfully cliche, doing nothing new or interesting with its genre. All of the characters are cardboard cutouts; nothing new to enjoy at all. Despite looking profusely, I couldn't find a reason to care about anything happening page to page.

I could also see really obvious influences from other popular shonen that I'd honestly rather be reading than this one (especially One Piece in the art style and Demon Slayer in the action scenes). I also thought the character designs were all either horrid or boring. Just not my cup of tea -- but I'm generally not a fan of shonen in general, so take my words with a grain of salt. If you like battle manga with moments of kooky humor and power systems, you will probably like this.

We follow Chihiro (age almost 15 when the story starts, 18 when the time skip happens) - the son of Kunishige, the legendary swordsmith whose 6 enchanted blades ended the Seitei war. After retrieving and hiding the blades, some sorcerers raid his dad's workshop and murders him. Years later, Chihiro takes up his dad's 7th and final enchanted blade ''Enten'', to reclaim the stolen ones and avenge his death. Following leads tied to a ruthless yakuza group, Chihiro confronts the Hishaku, a deadly sorcerers group linked to his dad's murder.

Chihiro's first action ''entrance'' was graphic, bloody and dynamic. Gore would be one of the keywords for this battle shonen manga. It's fast paced, full of explosive moments, have almost typical start character lineup and a very determined protagonist, who's at least for now, feels bit generic for me. But I bet we will see more sides of him. I mean, we can see that his cold demeanor has a softer side (scenes with Char). So fingers crossed for more complexity.

Fans of page-turn action will eat this up. Even though it starts as classic revenge story, it later hints on more detailed themes like ethics, growth, morals and more (hear from a grapevine). Good start!

p.s. Author likes John Wick (esp. 4th movie) + many fight scenes in it. I think we are best friends then.

Thank you VIZ Media and Edelweiss for the arc copy.
