There’s nothing quite like this in the yuri realm right now, which makes it quite the treat despite not being terribly romantic after four volumes. Nor is it especially scary. Which might make it seem a bit of a fail, but it’s still really enjoyable.
And, again, there are no awards for plot twists this time out. At a basketball camp, which Hinako and Shiori wind up at in highly contrived fashion, danger lurks, in the sense that it might as well be wearing a big old ‘be very suspicious of this person’ sign.
I’m pointing all this out because I still enjoyed the heck out of this story. Its somber mood is skillfully intermingled with some great story beats and one of the most enjoyable relationships I’ve read lately.
I’m talking, of course, about the one between Shiori, and Hinako’s friend, Miko, who both hate one another. Well, it’s more like Miko can’t stand Shiori and Shiori just has nothing but pure, distilled disdain for the former. Their incessant sniping cuts through the more dour main story in just the right way.
The first part of the volume, continuing the beach trip, is very well done. Some of the visuals are neat and we get an interesting revelation about Hinako’s scars, which are more than just mental. I’m not sure about the design just yet, but we’ll probably see more before this is over.
And Hinako begins to think a bit less about death and a bit more about Shiori, which sets up a very brutal moment later on. Shiori talks like the monster she is sometimes, blunt and unflinchingly direct, and I do like that.
If anything, I wish this story went farther. It has some very strong visual design, but it is terribly restrained when it comes to its horror. Letting it go a little further off the chain would only enhance the mood; as it stands this is a safer read than your average volume of Case Closed!.
I think the biggest strike on this one is the way that knowledge is being teased out in the most blatant ‘save this revelation for later’ manner possible. There’s clearly a lot more to our leads than we’ve heard, but we have no rationale for why that’s being held back beyond narrative fiat. Which is nothing new, just this case feels especially egregious.
Still, there are hints that maybe monsters lie to themselves as much as they do to humans and we’ll see what comes of all these little hints. Until then we get some fantastic banter and a little horrific action, not to mention a subtle shift in Hinako’s attitude, as evidenced by her actions and demeanour. No complaints.
The last pages feature the concept art for the series and, if anything, they make me appreciate me what we have here all the more. This was very nearly an incredibly moe “horror” story and it would have felt terribly same-y to many similar yuri. The tone of the version we got, however, makes it feel like nothing else.
4 stars - a slow burn, which won’t be to everyone’s tastes, especially those looking for a more romantic bent. But, it’s about trauma and horror and healing from it, and that takes time. Very satisfying stuff.
this was really cute and I love the overly obvious queer assumption here by others, but I think it's starting to create a plot that's too big for the story.
It keeps getting better with each volume!! The art style and panelling are gorgeous as always, and in this volume the horror yuri is finally horror-yuriing fully and I am SO excited for this. Absolutely scrumptious. Shiori's siren form is everything I needed and more, this is going to be absolutely insane once it's animated

I like the original draft (from the extras) more, actually. Miko is definitely better in the final version, but the idea of a horror slice of life in a cutesy way is much better – especially regarding Shiori – than this. As much as I love gloomy stories, the author kinda half-assed the melancholy.
Either way … have I mentioned I hate Shiori? Forces her to reveal her scars and then has the audacity to say she didn't force her. Right. The fact that this scene was made romantic bothers me even more.
Ayame was a cool character tho. Too bad Shiori had to intervene. One more reason to hate that mermaid.
I hate to admit it, but Shiori's mermaid form does look beautiful tho.
My theory about Hinako's blood as revelaed in ch18:
This continues to be one of my favorite mangas of the year. As a random side note, I’m also super excited about the anime for this series that has just come out.
In this volume, Hinako discovers a new and super creepy monster. Interestingly enough, this happens to be a creature I just learned about in another book I recently read, Japanese Myths by Ayaka Sazanami. In the process of protecting Hinako, Shiri reveals her true form. This seems to jog something buried in Hinako’s memory, which we will have to read future volumes to find out. I am looking forward to the next installment in this series to see where this goes. 🥰
honestly I liked the other books kinda, but I feel like this one just got confusing like I would say it didn't have a good ending but I'm not sure if I know how it ended..... might just be me tho idk. other than that it was kinda cute and the characters were cool
Oh my! Shiori in her full mermaid form is gorgeous! The coral antlers, the whole thing is just amazing! More monsters are targeting Hinako and again a very cool monster with the second mouth hidden by her hair. Love it. Loving this series.
“Hinako. For my part… whether your exterior is a thing of beauty or horror… matters not. All that matters… is that you are who you are. That alone… is the most important thing to me.”—Shiori
hinako rly be out there, a magnet for yokais. ayame became a yokai, we saw a glimpse of shiori's true form. feral shiori my beloved!! also, the revelation that hinako drank shiori's blood in the past yay! so that changed her scent and body? miko said it was after the accident.

This series continues to impress me. I like how different it is and how it isn’t afraid to hit heavier themes. Although this volume took awhile to take off once it did it was fantastic and we left off on a major cliffhanger that I am dying to know the answer to. Also the art is top notch.
