Long, long ago, in the days when you could only see as much of the world as a horse could take you, lived a curious little girl named Anja.

This book is one of a trilogy by wife-and-husband team Lori Evert and Per Breiehagen. She writes, he photographs. He's from Norway - unclear if they still live there. ANYWAY.

Anja is their daughter and they have made a small series of picture books featuring her going on all kinds of adventures.

This one involves her shrinking down to the size of a pinecone in order to beat her cousins in a game of hide-and-seek. The whole book takes place in what appears to be outdoors, 1800s Norway - kind of a Heidi feel to it. Anja and her cousins dress in traditional Norwegian clothes - the kind that today would only be worn at festivals and such. Her platinum-blonde hair is fixed into two braids.

The photography is beautiful and very obviously digitally altered - it has to be in order to show a tiny Anja interacting with various animals. SO beautiful, this will enchant children. She rides on a finch's back, she wears a lady's mantle leaf on her head for shade, rides a pinecone like a sled, she helps a squirrel build a little boat, she hugs and snuggles a bunny, etc. etc.

The book is visually stunning and will give children and adults much joy.

My only complaint is the writing.

The snail led Anja to the water's edge. He thanked her for the ride; then he withdrew under a patch of thistle.

Anja loved to swim, so she waded into the water. It was colder, faster, and deeper than ever, now that she was so small. "I can't swim in this!" she said. She sat on a rock and wondered what to do next.

"Let's make a boat!" said a baby squirrel. He jumped down from a tree and landed next to her. "It will be fun!"

They found a perfect piece of birch bark, then lined it with moss and decorated it with buttercups and starflowers. As they worked, Anja admired the squirrel's nimble paws and squeaky song.

It's fun to work on a little boat
With a friend with light, long hair.
When you meet a new friend who needs a boat,
It's good to be right there.

When the boat was finished, they dragged it to the water and the squirrel held it as Anja climbed in. She had hoped her friend would join her, but his mother was calling, so they said goodbye.

I don't know, perhaps my standards are too high, but I found myself sighing and rolling my eyes a lot at the writing and plot here. Although I guess it isn't bad like some children's literature is, I wish it could have been more excellent. Although the first page showcases excellent writing, the book spirals downward from there.

Tl;dr - One of the most gorgeous and visually stunning books you will ever read in your life. LOL Amazing visuals. Although the writing could have been stronger, this is a fun if simple and predictable adventure story about a girl who gets a chance to shrink down very small and interact with her animal friends on a new level.

Ages 0-6.

This is a sweet little fantasy adventure that will probably hold appeal for those who enjoy Thumbelina and fairies, elves and the like. We really enjoyed some of Anja's winter adventures and this brings her to spring and a lovely green world. I will say that the photographs felt even more heavily manipulated here and it lost a bit of the "magic" for me, but my youngest really enjoyed it and wanted me to read it twice so I'll give it a full four stars for the appeal to the target audience.

Given my love for all things small and magical, I was DELIGHTED to get my paws on a copy of the brand new beautiful and inspirational book, The Tiny Wish by Lori Evert, photographed by Per Breiehagen.

When I read the book to my five-year-old, her eyes grew as large as saucers and her lips curled into an "o". The heart of magic has been tapped!

Forget about the busy and annoying world of cars and all their expensive problems, the internet with all it's paradoxical connectivity and loneliness. Let's remember a time when we were all more tied to nature. I love the beginning of the story, "Long, long ago, the days when you could only see as much of the world as a horse could take you...."

With that wonderful opening, my sweet daughter and I have traveled back in time and place and are ready to take in curious little Anja's spring adventure. It's a perfect book to read right now when winter and I should have broken up and parted ways weeks ago.

"It is a magical time when most anything can happen." Author Lori Evert has her own magic. Her writing takes us to new and beautiful places that inspire the imagination. Her husband Per gives us the visuals through his amazing photography and trickery to transcend us to the new places their darling daughter Anja takes us as she changes into the size of a tiny and magical creature to finally win the game of hide and seek she plays with her cousins.

In hopes that the Easter Bunny is reading this post, I would like to suggest The Tiny Wish as an Easter gift for all the boys and girls who can hardly wait to leave their coats and hats and home and run outside to enjoy the arrival of spring.

I can't write enough good things about this book, it's author, photographer, and main character. I encourage the young and the young at heart who are in touch with the magical world and especially those who need help remembering the importance of magic in our lives to purchase a copy of this book and keep it close especially for these long wintery days filled with too much screen time.

My great niece liked "The Reindeer Wish" so much that I decided to give her another for her 5th birthday. This one allows me to leave the other Christmas-themed one for Christmas!

Without a doubt, this book is absolutely beautiful. The photography and settings are enchanting. However, I did not like this book as much as The Christmas Wish. Some of the photo-shopping of Anja seemed awkward. Anja was not as thoughtfully placed when she was hanging from a fetlock or riding a rabbit. It seemed like a hurried job, perhaps something I could have done on Photoshop myself. It did not look as beautiful or natural as her interactions with the animals in the first book. My husband was bothered by the proportion of the snail in relation to the pinecone haha. The rabbit looked unreal and the squirrel looked like a mounted specimen. Also, I wonder if the book took a long period of time to create - Anja looks older in her closeups than she does in the action shots.

Even though it felt more contrived than The Christmas Wish, it is still worth taking a look at for its visual beauty and cute story. I think children will love this story as much as the first. I will definitely purchase a copy for my library.

This book has a Fairy Tale quality that is sure to delight the young reader and a surprise ending to keep the young reader guessing. I believe all of us at one time or another has fantasized about being small enough to live among the animals and that is just what Anja in the story does when playing hide and seek with her cousins on their goat farm one sunny summer afternoon. The exquisite colored photographs both clarify and extend the text. At the end when Anja wakes up in her cousin's bed covered with tufts of cotton grass and flowers both the reader as well as Anja are left to wonder if Anja's adventures were truly a dream or not. I recommend this book.

Children could get carried away with their imaginations in this book. The style of writing was fairly typical, but the pictures were actual photos that had been edited to make the little girl appear as though she was tiny enough to ride on the back of a bird and other small animals. This was a delightful little story, although predictable. I would recommend this for students kindergarten through possibly 2nd grade. I would imagine that children any older would become bored and think that the story was long. Either way, this book was good.

Certain little people - people who adore the Littles and the Borrowers and Stuart Little - are going be absolutely BESOTTED with this. The cover tells the story - trick photography shrinks a little blonde girl to the size of a robin. Well executed, but some people find this kind of thing kind of creepy.

Gorgeous photo illustrations from Norway, one of a series of Wish books with the young daughter of the author and her Norwegian photographer husband in a story young children will love. There's even a bit of suspense and a little mystery.

Anja was playing hide-and-seek with her cousins but they always found her easily because the goat kid followed her everywhere and wouldn't hide. When Anja wished to be so small no one would find her - what adventures she had! Fun story with gorgeous photography.

Lori Evert and her husband, Per Breiehagen, have teamed up to create another breathtaking and enchanting story featuring their daughter. Anja looks like she’s stepped out of a Scandinavian fairy tale as she celebrates and explores the arrival of Spring in the mountains and valleys.

Evert’s text is simple and magical. She inspires reader’s to use their imaginations. During a game of hide-and-seek with her cousins, Anja’s favorite goat follows her and gives away her hiding places. She wants to be small, so her cousins can’t find her. When her wish comes true she has the most extraordinary adventures.

Breiehagen’s photographs are lush and exquisite. The gorgeous scenery of green meadows, snow-capped mountains draining into overflowing streams, goats grazing in fields of cotton grass, and Anja sitting in grass as tall as trees, really make this story sing of springtime.

Is it a wish or just a dream. Anja wishes that she could shrink so small she could not be found while playing hide-and-seek. While small she has several adventures. At the end she finds herself in bed, but under the covers she finds grass and flowers so was it a dream? Great for encourage discussions in which students would need to use text clues to support their opinions, and for writing different endings.
The illustrations are photographs of the author's family to tell the story. The colors are bright and vivid and pull the reader into the story in a very real way.

Some very good photos and neat manipulations, but I find myself considerably underwhelmed by the story. Perhaps as a small child, I would not have been so picky about the story and would have enjoyed it more for what it is. It was cute to see Anya a little older than she is in The Christmas Wish.

Anja from The Christmas Wish is back, this time exploring the wonders of the natural world in a mash-up of Alice in Wonderland meets Thumbelina.

Photographic artwork makes use of Photoshop to produce the magical images, but the overall effect is good. The story is okay, but the real star is the artwork.

Anja looks and lives like "Heidi" but has quite a different adventure when she turns so small her animal friends talk to her and help her travel around, including flying!
Done with photographs and photoshop, the story and photos are refreshing!

My tiny wish is that I never read this book. Weak writing to support a flashy idea that doesn't pan out. Skip this one.
