Harriet Ziefert grew up in North Bergen, New Jersey, where she attended the local schools. She graduated from Smith College, then received a Masters degree in Education from New York University.
For many years, Ziefert was an elementary school teacher. She taught most grades from kindergarten to fifth grade. "I liked it," she said, but she stopped teaching when she had her own sons. When her children were older, Ziefert wanted "a bigger arena" for her work. She went to work at a publishing company, Scholastic in New York City, developing materials for teacher's guides for kindergarten language arts and social studies programs.
"About twelve years ago," says Ziefert in a 1995 interview, "I tried to get a job as an editor, but no one would hire me as a trade editor. So I decided to write my own books." Since then, she has written several hundred books, mostly picture books and easy-to-read books. "I write books very quickly," she says, "in about twelve hours. I rewrite them three times over three days, and then they're done." She writes about twenty books a year.
Simple early reader about a dog waking up and starting his day.
Miss 4 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.
A simple and cute, easy reader that follows a funny puppy after waking up in the morning. My 5-year-old enjoyed this book, especially the illustrations.
Sleepy Dog, Wake Up! is a new level 1 easy reader from Random House's Step into Reading series. It follows a beagle puppy named Sleepy Dog through his morning routine, from the time he gets up, through breakfast, until playtime.
This sweet early reader is geared toward the youngest beginning readers. The story is not only very basic, but its subject matter is also very preschool-oriented. The conflicts in the story are regular everyday occurrences - spilling milk, and getting stuck under a chair - and everything resolves happily in no time at all.
Though the short sentences make the text feel a bit stilted at first, there is an artistry to the way the author uses language. Sentences repeat and build upon one another, sometimes using the same word to convey different shades of meaning, as in these lines from chapter one: Kiss you. / Kiss you good. / Kiss you good morning. There is really not much at all to the plot, but there is more richness to the language than can normally be found in a level 1 reader. The illustrations are unfortunately pretty generic, which might detract from its popularity, but otherwise, this is a fine reader to recommend to kids who have liked the Biscuit series and Mittens series.
In this sequel to the best-selling "Sleepy Dog" by picture book veteran, Harriet Ziefert, readers follow the experiences of Sleepy Dog as he/she wakes up, has breakfast, and plays with a ball. Simple text and bright illustrations encourage new readers with big type, easy, repeated words, rhyme and rhythm and picture clues. Perfect for Preschool and Kindergarten fans of Spot, Biscuit, and Mittens. Recommended.
