New York Times bestselling author Monica Murphy begins a sexy contemporary romance series that introduces three sisters born to wealth, raised to succeed, ready to love, and destined to make waves.

I’ve moved through life doing what’s expected of me. I’m the middle daughter, the dutiful daughter. The one who braved a vicious attack and survived. The one who devoted herself to her family’s business empire. The one who met an ambitious man and fell in love. We were going to run Fleur Cosmetics together, Zachary and I.

Until he got a promotion and left me in the dust. Maybe it’s for the best, between his disloyalty and his wandering eye. But another man was waiting for me. Wanting me. He too has an overwhelming thirst for success, just like Zachary—perhaps even more so. He’s also ruthless. And mysterious. I know nothing about Ryder McKay beyond that he makes me feel things I’ve never felt before.

One stolen moment, a kiss, a touch . . . and I’m hooked. Ryder’s like a powerful drug, and I’m an addict who doesn’t want to be cured. He tells me his intentions aren’t pure, and I believe him. For once, I don’t care. I’m willing to risk everything just to be with him. Including my heart. My soul.

My everything.

Makes me so sad to see the one star left for OWNING VIOLET when no one has read it beyond a few people. I haven't done this in a long time so I'll go ahead and tell you a few things about Violet's book (and give it 5 stars to get rid of that ugly 1 star next to the cover):

1. It is the sexiest book I've ever written.

2. Ryder McKay is hot. He's also sort of an a-hole.

3. What he's doing is not very nice...at first. Then of course, he falls for Violet.

4. It's the longest book I've ever written, coming in at 113,000 words.

5. That means you get a lot of bang for your buck (literally).

6. I am so excited for readers to meet Violet & Ryder. These two are just...they're still stuck in my heart. I love them.

7. I'm currently writing STEALING ROSE, the second book in this series and I didn't believe anyone could replace Ryder as the sexiest hero I've ever created but...Caden just did! Oh wait until you read Caden and Rose's story... ;)

I hope you add this book to your Goodreads shelf. I'm proud of this one and I can't wait for it to release into the world....Thanks. :)

Owning Violet is a about an heiress to a cosmetic brand, her family and a sexy, tattooed hero.

I really like the premise of Owning Violet it has all the ingredients of a sexy, melt your heart kind-of-erotic story but unfortunately it didn't quite mix well for me.....

I found the heroine to lack gumption and strength in certain instances but then, in others, she would appear to be the opposite.... confident and sassy. Character motivation seemed a little loose at times and unfortunately all this aided my disconnection to the story and indeed the characters.... I found myself skimming a little.

The best thing about this book is that it's extremely SEXY and the hero leading the eroticism is the star attraction, but unfortunately he didn't give me enough feels or depth of character to pull this from a 2 star read. This is only my personal opinion and there are other high rating reviews so, please, take a look at other reviews if you want a different perspective on this story.

I think as soon as the characters were introduced, I loathed them.

The hero and heroine's – almost – signifiant others; Zachary and Pilah – were obnoxious, manipulative and power driven. They featured heavily, and I could only feel pissed whenever they were in it. Pilah & Ryder's relationship reminded me a lot of was like the Christian and Elena from FsoG.

Violet allowed Zachary to cheat on her for the majority of their relationship. She actually expected him to stop philandering when they married. He eventually went too far, and did something in public to embarrass her. Only then did she dump him.

Ryder teamed up with Pilah, to split up Violet and Zachary to better their professional lives by manipulating them and having sex with them both. We were constantly told he was 'dark' but all I could see was that he was an asshole-alpha-dom.

Over time, they softened when they began to fall in love. Violet showed some backbone and Ryder proved that he could not be just an asshole just because he finally felt normal emotions. They showed more depth and a few likeable traits. But it wasn't enough, because underneath they were still mainly unlikeable.

I didn't like the story. Or the characters. The end was rushed and anti-climatic, the book felt too long. The characters motivations were unconvincing. There was a lot of sex, though it was good sex. The writing was great. But overall, I only enjoyed about 15% of it.

Oh boy...(Kanye gif = bad news hoochies)
description

I was struggling to figure out what this book reminded me of. We got 3 sisters, all rich, all dumb, crazy ass family, skeezy boyfriends, did I mention they were dumb? Anything come to mind?
description
Ahh yes, me too!! Thus the inspiration for a Kartrashian gif inspired adventure!

This book is all about Violet Fowler, push over extraordinaire. She works for her daddy’s company Fleur cosmetics.
description

She is dating a douche named Zachary, who cheats on her all the time and also works at Fleur. Violet knows it, thinks maybe things will get better when they get married, so she just overlooks her fiancée’s propensity for sticking his thingie in any orifice he can find. Told ya, she.is.dumb.
description

So, we are also introduced to Violet’s other co-workers Ryder and Pilar. Ryder is the alpha from the wrong side of the tracks and Pilar is his grody sometimes fuck buddy. Ryder hates Violet’s fiancée and wants to make his life miserable. He felt like Zachy only got a promotion they were both up for because of his relationship with Violet. So they cook up a scheme where Ryder seduces Violet, while Pilar goes after Zachary.

It really cracked me up how much everyone openly loathes Violet and treats her like ass all the time.
description

She continues to be the community doormat for most of the book. Violet and Ryder eventually do get down and dirty but seriously by then its just.
description

She replaced her ex-douche with another douche and she is still dumb.
description

It was impossible to enjoy a story where the characters make you want to throw up. Very predictable as well, Ryder and Violet end up falling in love until she finally figures out that his initial intentions of boning her were anything but genuine. She is mad for a hot minute, make up sex and

fade to black...

Note: I also couldn’t help but draw comparisons to another series I have read (Addicted), that also had 3 sisters, rich daddy with big company, and all named after flowers. Yes, similar but that was one was way better...sorry not sorry.
description

So overall, very much a lackluster meh for me. I will not be continuing with this series. Hopefully the other sistas in the next books have more of a backbone than this one. Fini.

I am a little torn in writing this review. First I loved Monica Murphy’s One Week Girlfriend Series so I was really excited to start this one, and I am not sure where the break down is for me exactly. The only explanation I can think of is some things were glossed over and other aspects of the story were told in too much detail.

In the beginning we meet Violet. She is the middle Fowler daughter and the most dedicated to her family’s business, Fleur Cosmetics. We immediately see that she is a bit of a pushover and while she is successful at work her personal life is a mess. On the night she thinks her long time boyfriend, Zachary, is going to propose she learns he is accepting a position in London. Now long distance relationships can work, but we also learn that Violet has been turning a blind eye to his infidelity.

That same night, at the same restaurant Ryder McKay is enjoying dinner with Pilar. Pilar and Ryder’s relationship is hard to explain and everyone at Fleur is intrigued by them. Basically Pilar rescued Ryder, he was a nineteen year old kid, living on the streets, in and out of juvie, selling drugs, starving. Pilar took him in, cleaned up, and got him a job at Fleur in exchange he has been her errand boy and sex toy.

So while Violet and Zachary’s relationship is falling apart, Pilar and Ryder are developing a scheme to hurt Violet and Zachary. As the plan begins to unfold Violet ends her relationship with Zachary and begins working closely with Ryder. Ryder is so taken back by Violet and as things progress he begins to develop real feelings for her.

This part of the story is insanely hot, because Ryder is dirty talker and dominating…two of my favorite things. I really enjoyed the scenes with Ryder and Violet. She comes off as such a prude, but when it comes to Ryder she will be as dirty as he wants her to be.

Their part of the story I really enjoyed, but I felt there was a huge disconnect with the other side of the story - the business, the scheme. While all this is going on we have Pilar in the background doing God knows what and we never really get any real answers. Now on this front I think it is because that plot will continue into the next Fowler Sister story. However, there is another storyline regarding Violet’s past and it was completely glossed over, too. I know it was added to show Violet’s vulnerability, but it was brought back up later like things were going to unfold further, but they never did. To me it just felt like too many loose ends.

In the end, I really enjoyed certain parts of the story, but I wasn’t blown away. I was left with more questions and honestly confused how a 400 page story could feel so incomplete. I do think I will continue on with the series, as I hope to get more answers.

Ryder sees Violet and wants. He wants to steal her away from her cheating, dirtbag boyfriend, Zachery, who also happens to be his chief competition at Fleur Cosmetics. With Violet being one of the three heiresses’ to Fleur Cosmetics and an influential executive in her own right, she holds a lot of promise to someone like Ryder. Pilar his “friend” (if you can call a pit viper a friend), and sometimes lover wants to crush and devastate Violet so she can take her place in the company. So they come up with a plan to achieve their goals.

Violet is the “good” daughter always doing what’s expected and never causing embarrassment. She’s worked hard to get where she is and she hopes to run Fleur Cosmetics with her boyfriend Zachary someday even though his faithfulness has come into question from time to time. Yet, when Zachary’s latest dalliance pushes things too far, Violet finally has enough. Waiting on the sidelines to swoop in is Ryder. Violet thinks he’s a self-serving arrogant man, but Ryder is seductive and seems completely focused on Violet. She can’t help resist his charms or the fiery attraction simmering between them.

Owning Violet
was a romance reminiscent of Cruel Intentions with two people scheming to seduce, humiliate or scam another leaving them broken in the end. However, I never felt Ryder came off as cruel and he never desired to humiliate Violet, although Pilar did. He did plan on using Violet to forward his own agenda and career. But Ryder lusted after her even before he had designs to use her:

There’s just something about her shy, reserved personality that drives me out of my fucking mind. That makes me want to drive her out of her fucking mind.

All his bad intentions took a back seat after Violet let him in. It seemed Ryder was more beguiled and bewitched by her than the other way around for a lot of the book.

I did like Violet, but at times I had a hard time respecting her. She knew her boyfriend had cheated on her and she ignored it, even wanted to eventually marry him after knowing this!

Rumors swirl that there are other women. I'm not stupid. I have my suspicions. They might have even been confirmed once or twice. But when we're engaged, when we're married...
That will change. It has to.

Wake up and smell the coffee, Violet! Thankfully, that didn’t last long, but she still had bouts of poor judgment, IMO that made it hard for me to truly connect with her. Also, I wished for more of a cerebral connection between Ryder and Violet instead of a mostly physical one. Still, it was a very hot romance.

Monica Murphy excels at writing steamy, all-consuming romances, Violet and Ryder’s was no exception. They both were caught up by their intense attraction making for some sizzling scenes! Pilar seems to be the villain in this series so I wonder how things will play out with her in the next book: Stealing Rose which focuses on Violet’s younger sister, Rose.

I find books that you don't connect with make for a difficult review- sadly to say that this was a book that I didn't connect with.

I loved the premise - cosmetic company, sisters, lust, sex, love, bad boy- it all sounded like it was going be great but it fell short.
There were scenes that were unbelievable to the character. It progressed way to fast. There were certain aspects of the story that were brushed over but were made to be significant. I am not one to DNF so I pushed through, skimmed at places and continued to the end.

I loved the author's series on Drew and Fable. I know that she is a great writer but sadly this book just wasn't for me. I believe if you like YA and tend to like it on the steamier side, you may enjoy this book.

I was so much looking forward to reading this, the synopsis caught my attention whilst still holding some intrigue. I have to confess however, I wasn't as satisfied on completetion as I would have hoped to have been. On reflection I feel I wasn't convinced by the characters or even the motive for some of their behaviours.
As much as I wanted to root for Violet, I found her on more than one occasion weak in character as well as some of her choices made. And Ryder, dare I say manipulative at times.
I do believe I am being quite unsympathetic, on part to some of the reasoning for Violet and Ryder's choices but they were back on forth so many times that I found it easy to give up caring.
In my opinion some things were left unexplained and I questioned why they were raised in the first instance. I found the story written well with good steam factor unfortunately for me, it wasn't enough for this to be an all around winner for me.

Full review to come.

Violet Fowler is the middle child in a family of three sisters and even though she's had everything money can buy, tragedy took a lot from her, leaving her a very insecure woman. Her mother committed suicide when she was young and immediately she took on the role of protector of her sisters. She's is beautiful, smart and poised but her insecurities and the obsession for stability in her life allow people to walk all over her more often than not, especially her boyfriend. She's been dating Zachary for a few years now and she knows he's not perfect; he cheats on her and his ambition to gain power over her family's company she knows is what drives him, but Violet is hoping that he will propose marriage soon and he will change his selfish ways once they are married.

Ryder McKay is a sexy and twisted bad boy, he comes from the streets where his friend/lover Pilar rescued him, giving him a chance to success at life. Pilar and Ryder work together and play together, but Pilar's claim on him is getting out of hand and Ryder is beginning to feel like he's her property and is desperate to brake out and be free. Both Pilar and Ryder want to gain more power and status inside Fleur Cosmetics Co., and what easier way than to seduce and brake the next person in line for the CEO position, Violet. Pilar and Ryder make a plan to brake her up with her boyfriend, used her and make her suffer so that she will be forced to step down from the position. The plan starts going accordingly until Ryder starts developing feelings for the delicate woman that is making him discover things he didn't even know existed, but too many people around them are control thirsty and it won't be easy for them to give into each other and explore this new romance that neither of them expected to own them so fiercely.

I was very impressed by this author's ability to write, her use of words was both creative and luxurious, my problem with the story had to do 100% with the characters. I'm personally not a fan of such a frail and insecure female character, Violet was just too weak, I hated that this was her company yet, everyone and especially Pilar treated her so poorly, she had the potential of achieving great things yet she always acted as if she deserved the worse out of life. Same thing with Ryder, he was very mean, and insecure and I definitely didn't like that on the hero. The story ended and there were still a lot of loose ends, Im hoping those will be resolve in the next book. My disappointment was in the fact, that despite my struggle to connect with these characters, I was hoping in the end to see them flourish and grow into better individuals, I was hoping that they would find the strength to brake out from their insecurities through love but sadly that was not the case. This type of story is just not for me, but I don't doubt other's can and will find enjoinment in it, especially because of those very sensual intimate scenes between Ryder and Violet. The steam factor in this book was brilliant.

This was my first book by Monica Murphy and it was brilliant! It exceeded all expectations and I am anxiously awaiting the next book in this series.

Sexy, adult, erotic, this book has it all. Owning Violet introduces us to three sisters “born to wealth, raised to succeed, ready to love, destined to make waves.” As the daughters of the scion of a world-famous fragrance company (it brought Estee Lauder to mind), Violet and her sisters are all very different but all intimately entwined with the future of their family’s company.

Violet at first seems like a push-over and a doormat, her boyfriend almost openly cheats on her but she looks the other way, all in the name of the company. But I found her to be a compelling character, driven, eager to love and be loved, and above all, very ambitious. This book literally has it all: highly erotic sex scenes, an Alpha male and lots and lots of edge-of-your seat drama.

Ryder is a sexy bad-boy co-worker who rose above his rough past to work in corporate America. Violet may appear to have it all, but she experienced a terrible trauma that is still haunting her to this day. While we might first see her as nothing more than a pawn in a rather sick game between Ryder and Pilar, a scheming woman who wants to bring her down, she is much, much more that that. Violet is no pawn and slowly begins to realize that the sexual relationship she has with Ryder might be much, much more and she must find her inner strength to beat Pilar at her own game.

Owning Violet is an adult, erotic, steamy book and I loved the story and the amazingly intense scenes with her and Ryder. He is hot as hell, damaged, sexy, smart and ambitious. The steam factor was just genius. All in all, I loved this book and can’t wait to read more from this author. I recommend this for anyone who loves a sexually-charged, fast-paced storyline with some very memorable characters.

I could not go beyond 22% with this book and my face the hole time was pretty much like this...

description

I love all types of books but the "heroine" in this one did nothing for me and her low self-esteem just rubbed me the wrong way. I mean really? You know he's (her soon to be - in her head- fiancé) ?

Don't even get me started on the male main character...

description

So NO...I did not like the book and I was very close to giving it 1 star but the writing wasn't bad and I never gave a book 1 star so there you have it...

All there is left to say is...

Violet is all prim & proper. She had the perfect role at her family’s cosmetic company, set to take over the reins when her father retires and the image of the ideal man on her arm. But her boyfriend of two years is not the ideal man in reality. Zachary is all about climbing the ladder and chasing skirts. Violet has looked the other way for years, until now.

Ryder has turned his life into a success. From a street punk to a savvy businessman. But that climb to the top came with a price, and that price has claws. But what he thinks is nothing more than another game to get what he wants turns into so much more when he decides to seduce unsuspecting Violet.

Violet isn’t daring or a risk taker, but something about Ryder has her body responding to his demands. A quick affair to get him out of her system turns into a constant battle to keep her wants and desires in check. Feeling anything more than lust for Ryder is a dangerous game and as much as Violet is owning her actions, she’s at a disadvantage, not knowing all the players.

Ryder had one goal. Get Violet in bed. Along the way to that goal he’d take more than just the woman out of his rival’s bed, he’d get the promotion he wanted, get out from under the debt that Pilar won’t let him forget about; but he never expected to get so much more out of this game.

Owning Violet was not only a steamy romance, there was just the right touch of suspense tossed in as you tried to uncover who is after what. But once Violet and Ryder stepped into the same room, everything else slipped away. Their chemistry could be felt through the pages of this story.

Violet’s character developed a backbone as the story continued. She was nowhere close to the woman she was in the opening chapter once you got to the end of this story. I loved that the heroine developed in this fashion as the story went on. It wasn’t only about Ryder giving her something that made her confident. It was her giving into him, into her own desires that turned her into her own woman. As for Ryder. Swoon. Bad-boy from the wrong side of the tracks turned into business man in a designer suit? Sign me up. I loved that he kept his edge. He was driven but there always remained a bit of that street punk beneath the surface. A touch of vulnerability laced in, made him almost perfect.

I have come to expect that when I start a Monica Murphy book that I will enjoy it. Often times be left with a feeling of just pure joy as the character get their happily ever after. The love stories have always had a touch more sweet to them. With Owning Violet, we get a far more erotic coupling of these two. Ryder had a darker side that makes him a bit demanding and although he does have specific tastes when it comes to sex, there was something that he gave himself over to when he was with Violet.

I am greatly looking forward to Rose & Lily’s story as this series continue.

Graphics to be posted at some point.

So seriously Ryder is a bad boy that I wanna get bad with!
here are some of his lines that melt me

My soul is hard. As hard as that damned diamond Violet is touching. Hard and black and ugly, and crazy fucker that I am, I revel in the blackness. The darkness

I will definitely mark her. In primitive, sexual ways that she'll keep hidden beneath her clothes. I'll know those marks are there, though

Wear something sexy beneath the clothes, violet. Wear your armor...and then wear a little something that will slay me underneath

May I tie you up so I can go down on you and bring you to orgasm with my tongue? Better yet, let me bind your wrists behind your back and push you to your knees while I push my cock into your mouth

Seriously.... The conference table scene at 50% puts a lot of erotic novels to shame!

You.Naked.Spread out on the table. With your fingers in your pussy as you fuck yourself

This is deff Monica Murphy's sexiest novel!
FAN SELF photo: fan self tumblr_lw4kkqx2ht1r20xa0.gif
The fowler sisters are all named after flowers so in my mind I call them the flower sisters. The first book is about Violet who works for her family’s company Fleur cosmetics. Violet attends another dinner where her boyfriend doesn’t propose and after 2 years she is desperate to be the doting wife.
At just a table away we hear the conversation between Pilar and Ryder about how this is the perfect moment to break up the perfect little couple and set out to destroy them so they can take over the company. Pilar’s disgust with Violet is so palpable I can taste the hate seeping from her teeth with every interaction. Here are some moments where I want to stab Pilar If you wont ruin her, I’ll ruin you .
Why in the world would you even want to touch Violet, let alone fuck her? Shes incredibly boring
 photo http3A2F2F40.media.tumblr.com2Fd32d271d76a3a9a4971e10836f28746b2Ftumblr_nbqufg8Mks1r62mtoo2_1280_zpsrknlqgix.png

As Violet develops her own brand/line of makeup she gets closer to Ryder and close enough to find herself spread eagle on a conference table pleasuring herself . Ryder makes Violet come alive even though he is very deceitful and leaves Violet confused about herself and her sexuality . But Ryder makes Violet focus on her needs, wants, desires but will the secrets Ryder keeps destroy the fragility that is the beautiful Violet?

I'm a sick twisted fuck Violet. I'm no good. Not good enough for you
Im yours...all yours Ryder. Use me. Fuck me. Hurt me. I don't care. Just make me yours. Own me.
I may want to Own Violet... but im afraid she might already own me
Hes not the one sleeping in Violet's bed at night.. he's not the one with his face buried between Violet's legs, tounguing her until she comes. And hes definitely not the one sinking his cock deep inside her welcoming body. That honor would go to me `
I want to cum in her, on her, near her...whatever

Owning Violet was all over the place. Every character in the book works for the company owned by Violet's father and those not related to her are plotting to use her to advance. First, it's Zachary, Violet's boyfriend and then it's Ryder - the hero- and Pilar, the caricature villain who was Ryder's lover and rescuer. The last two concoct a very convoluted plan which includes breaking up Violet from her boyfriend, Ryder seducing her and then breaking her heart so she has a nervous breakdown and Pilar can take over her job and Ryder can get a promotion. This is of course, a foolproof plan. What could go wrong!!!

Violet is supposedly very prim and proper but submits to Ryder's dark seducing really fast. In fact, they take to doing it in the office, on a regular basis(!) and always get naked!! (If you're going to have sex in your office, keep clothes on.) Pilar changes her mind about the plan every 5 minutes, visiting Ryder everywhere to tell him to break it up with Violet, etc. This got old pretty fast.

Everybody walks in eggshells around Violet because they thinks she's "broken" because of something that happened in college. There was a development on that front that was mentioned several times and then there was no payoff!! There was no reason whatsoever for this to have happened.

I'm adding half star to the rating because I liked how Violet was into the rough sex (which wasn't BDSM). Ryder just liked it rough and she took to it like duck to water. That was the only place where I saw some chemistry.

I guess Pilar will become the series villain and will go after the other sister in the next book, but I'm not interested enough to continue the series.

I'm not into this so I'm bailing here. I just don't like the power play between then - she's an Exec in the family business, he's some creepy middle manager playing the alpha in his lunch break. Meanwhile, in spite of the fact she's ambitious, competent and beautiful, she doesn't seem to have the respect of anyone - her ex, her family, her employees and the grasping middle manager getting in her pants to further his career.

I normally love this author's books but this story is not for me, sorry.

“You should care. You’re a good girl. So pure, so sweet. I’ll fucking wreck you.”

The intro to the synopsis about this series being for fans of Christina Lauren and Emma Chase is very misleading. In fact, this book feels misleading as a fan of Ms. Murphy. Her One Week Girlfriend series was the perfect blend of sexy and sweet. Owning Violet feels like the exact opposite. The characters were unlikable, the plot was shallow, and this story, unfortunately, felt like it would never end.

"Wear something sexy beneath the clothes, violet. Wear your armor...and then wear a little something that will slay me underneath."

Violet is not the type of heroine that I can root for. I don't need the heroine to be a strong-willed, take-no-shit badass, but I cannot in any way understand a woman that chooses to stay with a man that cheats on her. All while her boyfriend, Zachary, is whoring his way through their relationship, Violet turns a blind eye to all of it and assumes he will just straighten up once they take their relationship to the next level. Hell no. That was the first strike. The second strike came with Ryder. Ryder is a douchebag. Of course he is instantly drawn to how prim, proper and innocent Violet is. Plus there is the added benefit of what sleeping with her would do for his career. But despite the "attraction" and interaction between them, Ryder never really stepped up to the plate. Maybe it's just me, but I felt no real connection between them. Ryder liked to play hot and cold most of the time and push Violet to sexual extremes.

“I’m forever changed because of her.”

But my biggest problem with Owning Violet was how long and drawn out this story was. I try my best to not DNF a book once I've hit a certain percentage, but I wish I would have. I kept waiting for something to happen. And waiting. And waiting. Things happened, but nothing that made me want to continue on with this series, especially when it comes to Violet's sisters. I mean, if you are going to have a series center around sisters, at least let them have relationships worth wanting to read about. The few times that Violet interacts with her sisters felt detached and empty. Because of that, I cannot continue on with this series when I have no connection or interest in what will happen with these sisters or this cosmetic company.

This was just perfect. This is the most sexiest book written by Monica Murphy and it was exquisite. When I was approved to read an ARC of Owning Violet I was thrilled, beyond excited to say the least. This book was not a let down at all. It gave you Alpha Males, Steamy Sex Scenes and a whole lot of drama.

What I absolutely loved about this book was Ryder's dirty mouth when he talks to Violet because Violet wasn't the only one who fell for Ryder McKay and I doubt I was the only one as readers go. He was major swoon material.

But with violet, she was proper and prim which didn't really get on my nerves as much as she stayed two years with a cheating asshole who thought it would be okay not to propose and just leave her in new york when he took a promotion. Not only was I team Ryder all the way, I also wanted to kick Zachary in the balls

The writing in this book was incredible and the angst was their so would I recommend this book. Yes! And I would so read this again in a heartbeat and I cannot wait for Stealing Rose because I already know it's gonna be one of my favorites.

2 Underwhelming Stars

I finished Owning Violet last week and I’ve been contemplating my review since. I’m big fan of this author’s Drew + Fable series so I my excitement for her journey into erotic was definitely there. Unfortunately, the story of Violet and Ryder fell a bit flat for my tastes.

The plot intrigued me, it had manipulations working beneath the surface – almost Cruel Intentions’ish – that I really like. The execution however just didn’t work. Despite the raw passion between the two characters which I really did enjoy, I never connected with Violet or understood her motivations. She was a demure heroine then became fierce in an instant. She was zero to sixty with no transition period in between. The dark and dangerous hero Ryder McKay had a lot going for him and I felt I connected more with his character than Violet’s. The story boasts a lot of push/pull and anticipation that became redundant as did some of the repetitive language the author chose. The betrayal and manipulations are what really kept me skimming through the story, without them I may have not have finished.

As I stated, Owning Violet had potential for me that was never fully realized. It wasn’t what I was expecting. The story of Ryder and Violet just wasn’t a story for me.

I freaking loved "Owning Violet". Monica has written what promises to be a deliciously sexy series with the Fowler Sisters and I'm already excited for the next book!

Violet Fowler was the sensible, good girl of the sisters... the one that everyone could rely on . When those perfect life she had all mapped out suddenly crumbled, it was Ryder Mckay who saved the day. Ryder offered a whole new and exciting life for Violet. The question was, was she willing to risk her heart and allow Ryder into her world?
The elegant suit, that unruly mess of hair blowing, his gorgeous face, and all that pent up anger still hanging onto him. Very sexy, dark and dangerous. I've never been attracted to dark and dangerous.

Ryder was the bad boy in the office, the one all the women lusted after. He was hot but he was also a bit of an ass. When he set his sights on Violet, his plan was to seduce her and rock her world but what actually happened took Ryder completely by surprise. Violet turned Ryder's world upside down.
There's just something about her shy, reserved personality that drives me out of my fucking mind. That makes me want to drive her out of her fucking mind.

Usually I love Monica's main characters but for the first time ever, I found myself irritated by both Violet and Ryder! I was a little worried. My first impressions were not good ones. Violet frustrated me. She appeared to be a bit of a weak character, allowing everyone to control her. Her father, her boyfriend and her sisters all seemed to have a say about her life. Violet was allowing herself to be a bit of a doormat. I had my suspicions from the very beginning about Violet's boyfriend. I just knew he wasn't a man to be trusted. I thought Violet was viewing their relationship through rose-tinted glasses. However as the story progressed, I realised that I had gotten Violet all wrong and I found my feelings changing towards her. She was riddled with self doubt and lacked confidence in everything she did, from her career to her appearance. I felt kinda sorry for her and I was willing her to find her inner strength and realize what a beautiful and strong woman she was.
"I've never been a rule breaker before,"
"I know. So let me teach you how to play."

When I first met Ryder, I saw a cocky, selfish player who's attitude made my blood boil!! I did not like him, one tiny bit. Even when I learned of his ugly past I still disliked him. I just couldn't find any room in my heart for Ryder McKay. However, just like Violet, as the story progressed Ryder slowly burrowed his way into my heart and suddenly I realised I had fallen hard for this man. Ryder completely changed when he was with Violet and I was surprised to find that he had a heart after all, a good heart and underneath that selfish asshole was a gorgeous, loving man that made me swoon. Watching him change into the man he became made my heart melt. I fell in love with this new Ryder and the way that he treated Violet. He was so loving and caring towards her. He also became protective and possessive of her. Oh yes, Ryder became a bit of an alpha and I cannot resist an alpha!!
All I want is her. All I can think about is fucking her. Making her mine. Owning her.
I found that the more I knew Ryder, the more I understood him and I recognised that, like Violet, he too lacked confidence in himself. Because of his past Ryder did not feel that he was good enough for Violet and it seemed as though his low self esteem may become a hurdle that would get in the way of any kind of future with her, despite his strong feelings for her.
"I'm a sick, twisted fuck, Violet. I'm no good. Not good enough for you."
"I don't care."
"You should care. You're a good girl. So pure, so sweet. I'll fucking wreck you."

I absolutely loved Violet and Ryder as a couple. There was so much sexual tension and electricity between them. They were one hot couple. Whenever they were together I just knew that there was going to be whole lot of heat coming from my kindle. This pair were insatiable.
All I can think about is Ryder. Being alone with him. Touching him. Stripping him naked and running my lips over his skin.

Monica has written some combustible scenes between Violet and Ryder. Scenes that involved desks, conference rooms and even the closet, in fact every place you expect from an office romance. This pair needed a fire extinguisher to break them apart, and I'm not even sure that would work! Violet was no longer the good girl with the boring life!! Violet and Ryder's world got a hell of a lot more exciting. It wasn't all about the nookie though, Violet and Ryder also shared some beautiful and tender moments together. This pair really did click . They brought out the best in each other. I was rooting for their relationship to work past the office.

This story was addictive, I was unable to put my kindle down. Especially the last twenty percent. There was no way I was stopping reading until I had reached the end. I just wanted to know what was going to happen between Violet and Ryder and then when I did, I was gutted that it was the end! Although I loved how the story ended, I wanted more from this sexy couple. Violet and Ryder have made quite the impression on me and have quickly become one of my favorite book couples. I am not ready to let them go yet so I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will be able to catch up with them in the next book in the series"Stealing Rose".

If you love a deliciously hot office romance, this is a story you don't want to miss!

"Owning Violet" gets ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ from me!

So I've spent the last hour or so trying to find the perfect fuck you gif. Obviously, my search was not successful. I considered using a dozen different gifs and put them together in a longer, new, gif. I don't have the time or the ability to do that, so I'll just get on with this review. The reason for my search was for a better visual of my reaction to a certain conversation. It's between our main characters, Violet and Ryder. Basically, she's creating a new product, he is working on marketing it. Ryder is (partly) talking about the model they used for the shot.
“She reminded me of you.”
“How?”
“She looks like you. The dark hair, the dark eyes, and her sad expression. She looks frightened.”
“He looks like he wants to own her.”
“Doesn’t every man want to own a beautiful woman? Or at the very least, take care of her?”
“You make her sound like a possession.”
“Is there anything wrong with a man wanting to possess a woman?”
“Yes, if he’s controlling.”
“But what if she likes it? What if she wants to be possessed?”

*insert fuck you gif*

I don't know what's worse, the rape culture or the blatant misogyny. Early in the conversation they established that the woman in the picture is frightened, but given that Ryder dismisses that remark it's apparently more important that the man is able to possess her. His little "what if she likes it" at the end makes it all worse. They established that she is frightened. *deep breath* Moving on. I don't care if it's BDSM or some kink or whatever you call it, you never consider a woman (or a human being) a possession. If you do like that kind of play, go ahead. I'm all for supporting that, but Ryder does several times seem to consider people possessions (and not in the sexual/BDSM) kind of way. And to my third point, can I have a single New Adult book not reinforce the "heterosexuality is the default setting" idea? Not all men will want a woman. And even those who do, not all will want to be the one to take care of the woman. Some will be perfectly happy being the one being taken care of.

There. Sorry for rant about a single conversation, but I don't have much to say about the book itself. It's Keeping up with the Kardashians/Fifty Shades/Cruel Intention. Bad combination, if you ask me. Violet is floating by with the help of her father being CEO of a big cosmetic company. Ryder wants to use Violet, and he's up there on asshole level with Christian Grey.

I think I made it clear from the beginning that I did not like this book. Ryder is too much of an asshole. (Authors, please remember that there's a difference between a bad boy and a complete asshole.) Violet is bland, boring, and a pushover throughout the entire book. She also has a tragic past that didn't add much (read:anything) to the story. The way it was introduced/presented was troublesome. The pacing is way off. 90% lust and dragged out to the extreme. The ending was anti-climatic and left a lot of loose ends. And let's not forget the endless shaming. There was slut-shaming and virgin-shaming. Or the way the only character of color was described as "exotic".

In conclusion, Owning Violet isn't anything new when it comes to New Adult. Sadly, it's not even the worst. That doesn't say much though, when it comes to this genre. Sadly. Oh well, off to a new, and hopefully better, book.

Violet and her boyfriend Zachary, Ryder and Pilar all work at Violet’s family cosmetics company, Fleur. Ryder and Pilar are scheming to break up Violet and Zachary to make their own move on up the corporate ladder. Zachary’s cheated on Violet for the last time (with Pilar). Then, Ryder realizes Violet feels more than just a pawn in their game. And, (sexual) shenanigans and romance commence.

The Good, The Bad and Everything In Between

Sexual heat in spades: I’ve read Monica Murphy’s books before, so I was eager to see something a bit more adult from her, and I wasn’t disappointed (in that respect). This had lots o’ steamy heat coming from Ryder and Violet. In that respect, the sexual chemistry between Ryder and Violet is very strong. Time and care was taken to describe their love scenes. Considering the condensed timeline for their romance, their physical relationship sold me on their complete fascination with each other.

Violet was wilting, but starts to bloom by the end: Starting off with very fragile, pushover heroine was concerning for me. Violet has no backbone when the story starts. She is worried about her cheating loser of a boyfriend, knows he’s been unfaithful for years, but completely accepts it, too focused on getting married. Thankfully, Violet shed Zachary fairly quickly, and came out of her shell that by the end, she really is transformed just enough to show some emotional growth. Still submissive and a bit needy, but Ryder likes that.

Manipulative hero: I don’t have a problem with a hero who starts romancing the heroine under less than honest beginnings. Ryder’s POV is strong throughout. He’s struggled, and had a very tough childhood and his motivations are fully fleshed out. And his surprise for Violet was a very pleasant one for me. It added a little something something to the love scenes.

Split POV: Though I tend to prefer third person POV, I will say that splitting the story viewpoint between Violet and Ryder was important, as these two spend alot of time in their own heads, explaining their actions, which were a bit nonsensical.

Speaking of….most of my issues are spoilery in nature, so I’ll keep this part under spoiler tags.

For those who don’t want spoilers but want to know why I struggled with this review - in a nutshell, there’s alot of telling vs showing. Ryder and Violet told me over and over how wrong they were and obsessed and in loved and owned. But I would have liked to see more actually happen, other than sex. Of which there was plenty.

The Bottom Line (2 stars)
If you like some melodrama with your romance, you may enjoy this. I usually do, but there were too many frustrating bits that overwhelm the bits I liked. They had me scratching my head, took me out of the story and I’m not sure if I would continue with the series.

Owning Violet is the first Monica Murphy book I have read. I have several blogger friends who LOVE her books and now, I can see why. I didn’t love this book to pieces, I did have my reservations about it, overall I quite enjoyed it.

First off – I have to say that Ryder is a dick. The first time I read his POV, I wanted to throw my kindle against the wall, stomp on it and set the damn thing on fire. That is how much I despised this guy. He has no qualms about going after what he wants – using people to his advantage for his own personal gain. He’s completely selfish and just an all around douche bag. However, what does it say about Monica’s writing that I was able to eventually warm up to the guy and *gasp* like him?

I have to admit – but there is something attractive about someone who knows who they are and own it. Good or bad. So I can see Violet’s attraction to him. He’s edgy, sexy and screams NO GOOD. But he has layers, of course, and pealing back those layers and seeing what he can be is always fun and exciting. He isn’t complete changed? No – how can he? – but he is on the track.

Violet too, was frustrating at first. She is with a man, Zachary, that is obviously using her to climb up the cooperate ladder and her naive thoughts about marriage were irritating. She’s a doormat. Did she break out? Yes. But I thought it was rather quick and it felt too convenient. That aside, I do think when it came to her career she was smart and tough. I love seeing powerful woman in the business world.

Now these two together? *fans self* Their chemistry was off the freakin charts. Monica Murphy sure knows how to write some sexy scenes. The taboo setting of some of their encounters adds to the intensity too. However, I work in a cooperate office. (Granted, my company is not as large as Fleur Cosmetics). Which is why there were some parts that just blew my mind. Either I am completely naive as to what goes on, or the people just turn a blind eye to two people getting in on in the conference room, which is hard for me to comprehend. Office politics and all that.

One of my biggest issues was how much of the overall plot arc was left untouched. Yes, this is a series and it will continue on with each installment, but I was still disappointed. I felt the ending was rushed too – and Violet was too quick to forgive Ryder without having all the facts.

Overall – I did enjoy Owning Violet. I can’t wait to see what Monica Murphy brings us with Roses’ story. If you love hot adult romances, I recommend this one!

DNF for now at 47%

I hate to do this, I really really do. I'm a big Monica Murphy fan, but Owning Violet just didn't work for me.

I loved the premise. That first line of chapter two definitely caught my attention, but there was just something missing, so I couldn't fully give myself over to this book. I was in two minds about the characters. Violet is very naive and though she did show signs of a slightly stronger, sassier character, I felt she was too much of a push over for me to like her. Ryder... Hmmm, well, he was a dick. A real arsehole, but he did have (partly) redeeming qualities. He was a very confident, sexy guy, and you could tell from the very start that he liked Violet, which I liked; he just went around it completely the wrong way! Silly boy.

But I skimmed. A lot. And I hate doing that. I also put the book down numerous times, and had to push myself to pick it back up. I felt like the story wasn't strong enough, gripping enough, and moved at a slow pace so my attention fizzled almost completely. I love books that have a pull. Whether they be heavy on emotion, humour, angst, or mystery, those are the type of books that will keep me reading. And though unquestionably sexy, Owning Violent just didn't have it.

So, I said DNF for now. That "for now" is very important, because it could just be that I can't appreciate this book for what it is right now, but at a later date, when I'm in a different state of mind, I might completely love it. Plus, I do plan to keep up with this authors books, so I'll be giving Owning Violet another try before the release of book #2, which is about Violet's sister, Rose.

What a fabulous story. Monica is/was a new to me author and I have fallen in love with her writing style.

This story had an excellent balance of plot, angst and loving, for me. There was drama in all the right places, but it never felt over the top or convoluted.

The characters were well fleshed out and I had a love, hate and at times, love/hate relationship with many of them. Pilar was a prize bitch, but I still liked her, go figure.

I was rooting for Violet and Ryder the entire time, and liked that they didn’t have sex immediately. Don’t get me wrong there was plenty of smoking hot ‘foreplay’ before they sealed the deal. The stolen moment, in naughty places, was an extra treat that really appealed to me.

My one wee critique, if you can call it that, is the title. I think the word “OWING” is misleading. I never got the feeling that anyone ‘Owned’ Violet, she was a strong character, IMO. While Ryder had no problem instructing her to ‘strip’ she took as well as she gave.

Violets sisters make an appearance here and there, but thankfully the author resisted giving them too much page time, as this was not their story. I do believe Rose’s story is next, and I for one will can't wait to get my hands on a copy of that.

This story does not end with a cliff-hanger, but if you enjoy it as much as I did you will WANT to continue with the series.

I absolutely was obsessed with Monica's One Week Girlfriend Series and her Billionaire Bachelors Series... And NOW The Fowler Sister are going to be rocking my world!

This is the sexiest, steamiest, OMG give me more, book that Monica has written.

Ryder McKay is going to BLOW YOU AWAY (Even though he's an a-hole most of the time...he's damn sexy being one) He's dark, mysterious... the bad boy we love.

Violet is the girl who does everything by the books and is her father's shoe in successor to the family business.

These two are polar opposites, which makes this such a fantastic read. They both go into the relationship knowing that they are using each other. But it all too soon becomes real...on too many layers for them to ignore it.

The only complaint about the book was that I wanted it to go on forever! Hopefully Violet and Ryder will show up some in the future books too.

I really enjoyed this book. Ryder is kind of a jerk. He is willing to do whatever it takes to further his career. When his mentor/occasional lover Pilar sets her sights on destroying Violet, the daughter of Fleur owner and a rising star in the company, they agree to break up Violet and her cheating boyfriend Zachary. Then, Ryder is supposed to break fragile Violet's heart and destroy her so that she can no longer do her job. What they don't count on is the way Ryder really feels about Violet and that Violet isn't as fragile as everyone thinks. I really loved this story - I love a bad boy with bad intentions. Plus, this book has lots of hot and steamy scenes! I can't wait to read the next book in this series about Violets sister. Highly recommend!
