Review From Rakehell Magazine by Christine Shoup (not paid for)
Lieutenant Robert Smythe of his majesty's ship The Brunswick would do anything to save his commanding officer, Captain Jackson. The Captain turned deathly ill two days ago but had been mysteriously sick for almost two weeks now. His last hope was a healer west coast of Ireland - Varrick Island. Dark hair, tall and muscular - he was the male version of a siren and built like a veritable god. He had a powerful presence. His beautiful brown eyes were like whiskey on the soul. For years, Lt. Robert Smythe's mistress had been the sea. Upon reaching Portsmouth he would be looking for a wife. At least that was the plan until the Captain took ill.
Wise Sarah Duncan was an orphan found abandoned and floating in a wee tar boat on the sea. The villagers on the mainland say she's a changeling fairy. In reality she's the daughter of Gladys Clougheen's, a renowned healer whom some villagers believe to be a witch. Sarah had cornflower blue eyes and long golden hair. She now lived on her own in Urlingford village in the rolling green hills of Kilkarney, Ireland. Sarah was previously engaged to a blacksmith but he died of typhus upon the sea. Now she was just hoping to find peace and happiness and a life all her own.
Together, Robert and Sarah work to heal the Captain. In doing so they must also find a treasonous culprit. The plan was that Sarah would pose as Robert's betrothed while aboard The Brunswick and they would seek answers from anyone and everyone who had any contact with the Captain.
I liked this book. The characters are strong and the story is well written. The supporting cast of nautical riff-raff gave a the book a wonderful and colorful spin that supported the protagonists perfectly. I feel as though there is another book in the making though. There is a lot more to this story to be told, I can feel it. Hopefully, we won't have to wait too long. This book is a lovely quick read perfect for a flight or day at the beach. Honestly, I feel as though I learned a lot along the way too. Ms. Adam has filled the book chock full of interesting historical, nautical and various other factoids. I thought it was pretty cool stuff. I love to learn things when I least expect to be taught anything at all!

Fairly good read.
The first several chapters took me a while to get through, kept losing interest. I didn't find this book as interesting as the first one in the series. It was a little over half way through that I finally got involved in the book.
Commander Robert Smythe brought his captain to the isle where the wise women Sarah and her mother lived. The captain was dying and Robert didn't know why but hoped these women could save him. Sarah determined the captain had been poisoned and proceeded to help him. After it was determined the captain would live, Sarah went with Robert to try to determine who among the crew tried to kill the captain.
Their journey takes them on a path to find a possible relative of a seaman who deserted. Once they get to England, that path takes a strange twist. Who really was the deserter? And why did he murder another crew member and want the captain dead?
As I said, it took me a while to get involved with this book because the beginning was ever so slow, but the pace did pick up and the ending was good.

"The spinster and The Earl" was the first book I read from this autor and let me tell you that I loved it so I jumped into this one! Such a good book
with great characters that keeps you obsessed with every page since the first one! So many twist and turns! I enjoyed it big time! Totally recommended!

A wonderful book about revenge gone array. When the Captain is poisoned and his Stewart murdered, Lt. Robert Smythe and the wise woman Sarah try to find the culprit. A great read with a wonderful ending.

Well written story about an Irish healer and a English Naval officer that has suspense, action and a love story. My only criticism is the sex scenes which the writer put in assuming you to spice it up but they did not make it any better.

Entertaining
Sarah and Robert take on their adventure trying to solve the mystery of who poisoned the captain and who murdered the captain's steward. This intriguing tale will keep you involved with the story right up till the end. Loved it.

Great story...
... but way too many errors, especially incorrect use of hyphens. I like the surprise discovery toward the end. You'll have to read the book to find out what it is!

I like the continuation of the story with Sara
The story line was a mystery, it keep you on your toes. A lot of twist and turns. I sure like the series so far.

I wasn't a fan of the writing, and he is a lieutenant, and she is an Irish wise woman (medicine woman)... not a captain or a lady. Neither of them becomes these titles by the end of the book either.

Sarah Clogheen is a wise woman living with her mother on the west coast of Ireland when a stranger appears at her door with a man over his shoulder. Lieutenant Robert Smythe needs help with his Captain who has been poisoned.
While trying to find out who poisoned his captain and friend Robert assumes the part of captain aboard his majesty's war ship, The Brunswick with Sarah at his side as his betroth.
This book was so good and I loved that Robert didn't judge Sarah. This story has lots of twists and turns. I highly recommend it.

Book number two in this series didn't have any surprises and was a light easy read. I look forward to book number three.
