I’m one of “those” people who’s obese. A staggering 43 percent of the U.S. population shares this unfortunate statistic. Despite this alarming fact, we must delve into the question of why Dr. Alexandra Sowa, an internist, chose to write such a book, and she states: “Any new concept that some might perceive as unconventional often raises eyebrows and prompts skepticism.” In this case, the title of the book, “ The Ozempic Revolution,” piques curiosity and raises questions about the effectiveness of weight loss medications like Wegovy, Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Zepbound.”

I was eager to examine how the book would help to educate me about the history, usage, and benefits of these medications. The book’s long title reads, “The Ozempic Revolution: A Doctor’s Proven Plan for Success to Help You Reverse Obesity, End Yo-Yo Dieting, and Protect Yourself From Disease.” Just by glancing at the title, I knew this book would hit the spot for me. It discusses the nature of obesity, the prevalence of its impact on the population, the ineffectiveness of yo-yo dieting, and the potential benefits of weight loss in safeguarding our health from various diseases. As my primary physician is also an internist, I was intrigued by Dr. Sowa’s insights and decided to read the book after reviewing her bio.

The book is structured into four main sections:

1. The Science: This section delves into the scientific aspects of weight loss and the role of GLP-1 receptors in regulating appetite and metabolism.
2. The SoWell Method for Sustainable Success: This section provides practical strategies and techniques for achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.
3. Your GLP-1 Life: This section focuses on the benefits of GLP-1 medications and how they can contribute to a healthier lifestyle.
4. Recipes and Dining Out: This section offers a variety of recipes and dining suggestions that align with the principles of the SoWell Method.

Upon reading the table of contents, I was immediately drawn to the section titled “The Science.” I was particularly curious about the meaning of GLP-1. I’ve been using Wegovy for five months now, and I’ve experienced a remarkable weight loss of 45 pounds so far. My average monthly weight loss is approximately 9 pounds, which translates to a pound and a half per week.

So, what are GPL-1s? Glugacon-like peptide 1 (GPL-1) is a hormone produced by your small intestine. It plays several crucial roles, including triggering insulin release from your pancreas. Insulin is essential for converting food into energy and regulating blood glucose levels. (Source: Google)

As the book delves deeper into this topic, Dr. Sowa emphasizes the significance of GLP-1 agonist drugs (another new term for me) like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound. She highlights their potency, transformative impact, and life-saving potential for patients.

It’s a fact that many obese individuals face shame and discrimination due to their weight. Unfortunately, I personally experienced this firsthand. Two examples. My gastroenterologist shamed me to the point where I never wanted to see him again. He equated my esophageal stricture with my weight issues, which really upset and confused me. I’ve had well over a dozen procedures to stretch my esophagus and was never told this issue was caused by my weight. Shortly after that, another surgeon shamed me because of my weight and expressed regret about having to operate on me to fuse my spine.

If you could meet my primary physician, you’d be surprised. She’s incredibly small, barely 5 feet tall and weighing around 90 pounds. Despite her petite stature, she’s one of the kindest doctors I’ve ever had. She’s only been my doctor for about a year and is also an internist, as is the author of this book. When she suggested weight loss management, she took the time to explain the process and potential benefits to me, which motivated me to start the journey.

While reading this book, I gained even more understanding than from talking to my doctor. Surprisingly, I discovered that many others that I know are on Wegovy, including my doctor’s nurse. Even more astonishing, four of my siblings are on different forms of these GLP-1 medications!

This book teaches us about the reasons behind our weight gain, the author’s successful treatment methods over many years with minimal adverse outcomes, and the medical field’s familiarity with these medications and weight loss specialists.

Beyond the educational content, the book offers fantastic high-protein recipes, appendices, a hunger scale, and a food log. A clickable QR code provides access to helpful worksheets, and a cognitive behavioral toolkit aids in starting and maintaining long-term weight loss, found in the appendices.

I highly recommend this book to anyone struggling with weight loss management. If you can connect with your doctor and discuss these topics, you may find a way to transform your life, which can bring numerous health benefits.

Many thanks to William Morrow and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Rating as a movie: PG-13

Memorable Quotes: First, they have unrealistic expectations: Lacking information, they think the weight will fall off right away. In this book, I offer clear data and vivid descriptions of what every point on the GLP-1 journey looks like, setting users up to stay the course for the long haul. Second, they need help managing side effects: GLP-1 users need to learn how to eat to prevent the most common side effects (nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and fatigue), particularly in the early months when these uncomfortable side effects are most likely. This book provides a new framework for food choices that manages these issues while supporting optimal health. Third, they lack social support: So many of my patients get nothing but grief from their family and friends (and even their doctors!) about their decision to use GLP-1s. They need information and the self-belief to feel confident and empowered while taking these drugs—none of which comes with their prescription. And finally, they can’t afford it: In the United States, these drugs have had a list price of upward of $1,000 a month. (Compare that to $100 to $200 a month in the United Kingdom and Europe.) Many insurance companies—including Medicaid and Medicare, in most cases—don’t cover weight loss drugs, and some that do claim that the costs will soon force them to limit access and length of coverage. This is a definite challenge, but change is coming.

For centuries, society—including doctors—has heaped shame and scorn on people who carry excess weight. People with obesity are casually, cruelly dismissed as lazy, lacking in self-esteem, weaker, and less competent than their leaner counterparts. There are a lot of ugly reasons for this—racism, classism, and misogyny, to name a few sweeping undercurrents—but because I’m a doctor, this book will focus on the medical story. A primary reason doctors treated obesity as a problem of willpower is that they didn’t know any better.

DISEASES LINKED TO OBESITY Before prescribing a GLP-1 medication, your doctor should screen you for the following diseases and disorders. The goal is always to discover and treat the underlying contributors to obesity. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) Metabolic syndrome Prediabetes Type 2 diabetes Hypothyroidism Binge-eating disorder Night eating syndrome Sleep apnea Depression or mood disorders

Few people realize that their fat isn’t some passive blob taking up space. In fact, it’s a powerful and dynamic organ. I would argue it’s the most powerful organ we have. And when it becomes too powerful, it becomes a major driver of the hormone dysregulation that makes it almost impossible to lose weight and increasingly easier to gain it.

PCOS is a chronic condition that causes hormonal imbalances associated with anovulation, irregular periods, infertility, weight gain, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidemia, heart disease, hypertension, androgenic alopecia, and excess facial and body hair. And yet women are often given little guidance when it presents; instead, they’re often just put on birth control to help with irregular periods (a common PCOS symptom) and shuttled out the door. Up to 70 percent of these women have concurrent insulin resistance, a precursor for type 2 diabetes and a big driver of weight gain.

Food is delicious and meant to be enjoyed. But it’s difficult—maybe even impossible—to maintain a healthy weight when it becomes your primary source of pleasure, especially in a world of abundant hyperpalatable food choices. That’s why one of the first priorities of the SoWell Method is to help you rebalance the role of food in your life.

The Food Foundations are not rules, they’re building blocks: the habits that ground your eating patterns. You won’t follow them at every meal for the rest of your life. It’s a direction to move in, not zero-sum thinking.

My rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟💉

My thoughts: 🔖Page 3 of 238 Chapter 1 Why “Try Harder” Is Terrible Medical Advice - I just read 10 pages that aren't included in the page count, but at least they're numbed with Roman numerals. I'm reading this book for information I know a few people who have gotten on and off of Ozempic. So far it's not exciting but I'm interested to hear about these side effects and results.
🔖63 Chapter 5 The Habit Foundations - There is so much to unpack here and I'm not going to try to document it all. This is very interesting (not always the case for this genre) but I'm taking a break as I came to a part and I'm ready for some cupcakes via Jenn McKinlay, not the kind you eat.

This is a great book, it has a great balance between information on these medications and a long-term plan for utilizing them and maintaining the weight after you stop. She definitely isn't trying to sell these meds as I didn't feel like it was a commercial and still have no interest in a prescription.

Recommend to others: Yes. I highly recommend this book if you take these drugs, know someone who takes them, have an interest in taking them, or if you're just nosy like me.

“From decades of research, we now know beyond any doubt that obesity is not caused by weak willpower. It is a chronic, relapsing, and progressive disease with a complex set of causes.”

There’s so much misinformation out there about GLP-1s and obesity, and this book tackles both topics thoroughly, scientifically, and compassionately.

I started taking these medications over three years ago and lost about 40 pounds quickly before hitting a plateau. My doctor’s advice at the time was simply “eat less and move more.” She admitted I was one of her first patients on the drug and that we were learning together. I maintained that loss (though still technically obese) until my insurance stopped covering the medication. Within months, I regained all the weight (and then some) and became insulin resistant.

About six months later, with new insurance, I was able to restart treatment. This time, my doctor seemed far more knowledgeable and had more practical advice. We titrated my dosage more slowly and I’ve now lost over 50 pounds. At several appointments, she suggested I read this book, saying it had completely changed how she understood obesity and these medications.

I finally took her advice, and I’m glad I did. I was surprised by how engaging and insightful Dr. Sowa’s writing is. Whether you’re curious about GLP-1s or already taking them like I am, this is a thoughtful and worthwhile read that helps cut through the noise.

I will admit to previously having some of the uninformed opinions Dr. Sowa critiques. After seeing a relative on the medicine have success (honestly, they were glowing), I wanted to learn more.

I was reading a lot online (thanks, Reddit). While some of it was helpful, most of it was still steeped in diet culture, even if it didn’t mean to be, and so much was anecdotal it was hard to know what was borne out by science.

Enter this book. It was totally different than what I thought it would be and was a good mix of science, patient success stories, and actionable tips and tricks.

I learned a lot and am grateful that this information was readily available. I have already recommended this book to a few people.

Since these medicines are increasing in prevalence in our society, it's best to have accurate information before taking them or opining on them. The author is a doctor and an expert in obesity and long-term weight loss. The book is short (can be read in one day), factual, and isn't trying to sell us any particular product.

I am thrilled to write this review of "The Ozempic Revolution" by Alexandra Sowa, MD, a truly life-changing book that has revolutionized my approach to weight loss and overall health. As someone who has struggled with weight issues for years, I was blown away by the transformative power of Ozempic and the expert guidance provided by Dr. Sowa.

Firstly, I must commend Dr. Sowa on her exceptional writing style, which makes complex medical information accessible and easy to understand. The book is well-researched, comprehensive, and filled with real-life examples that make the concepts relatable and engaging.

What sets "The Ozempic Revolution" apart from other weight loss books is Dr. Sowa's holistic approach to health. Rather than just focusing on diet and exercise, she delves deep into the underlying biology and psychology of weight loss, providing a 360-degree understanding of the factors that contribute to weight gain and loss.

The book is divided into clear, concise chapters that explore the benefits and mechanisms of Ozempic, a medication that has gained popularity in recent years for its remarkable efficacy in promoting weight loss and improving metabolic health. Dr. Sowa's expertise shines through as she explains the science behind Ozempic, its effects on the body, and how it can be safely and effectively integrated into a weight loss plan.

One of the most valuable aspects of the book is Dr. Sowa's emphasis on individualization. She recognizes that every person is unique and that a one-size-fits-all approach to weight loss is often doomed to fail. Instead, she provides a framework for tailoring a weight loss plan to each individual's needs, taking into account factors such as lifestyle, health status, and medication history.

In conclusion, "The Ozempic Revolution" by Alexandra Sowa, MD is a must-read for anyone struggling with weight loss or seeking to improve their overall health. Dr. Sowa's expertise, compassion, and dedication to helping people achieve their health goals shine through on every page. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a comprehensive, evidence-based guide to weight loss and wellness.

I purchased the audiobook (via Audible, narrated by the author herself) to gain insight into how a medical doctor specializing in obesity medicine approaches weight loss. As a family nurse practitioner already familiar with this class of medications, I expected to expand my perspective- and I’ve gained so much more than that.

First, you don’t need a medical background to appreciate this book. Dr. Sowa’s writing is accessible, engaging, and deeply personal. It reads like a memoir of her clinical experience in obesity medicine, enriched with concise summaries of data and science.

Unlike many medical texts, Dr. Sowa's style is warm and intriguing while remaining evidence-based. She weaves personal anecdotes, patient stories, and years of research to illustrate how factors like metabolic health, genetics, environment, and societal influences contribute to obesity. By doing so, she weakens that stigma of shame that is so often associated with obesity, especially when the standard “diet and exercise” advice doesn’t yield results.

I didn’t anticipate how much I would learn - or feel - from The Ozempic Revolution! Though I don’t struggle with obesity, personal history with disordered eating made parts of this book resonate deeply- I am finding myself nodding along to the narration. Dr. Sowa’s observations about unhealthy relationships with food, unsustainable exercise routines (which can feel like self-punishment in hindsight), and yo-yo dieting culture felt like affirmations for my own experiences.

This book goes far beyond its title. It’s not just about a class of medications that have revolutionized sustainable weight loss and reduced health risks for so many- it’s an exploration of obesity as a medical condition that provokes thoughtfulness, empathy, and understanding. It is a guide grounded in science, and a collection of personal testimonies that inspire hope for a healthier future, with the help of medical treatment.

Without hesitation, I’ll be recommending The Ozempic Revolution to my patients and colleagues!

Book Review: The Ozempic Revolution: A Doctor’s Proven Plan for Success to Help You Reverse Obesity, End Yo-Yo Dieting, and Protect Yourself from Disease by Alexandra Sowa, MD

The Ozempic Revolution by Dr. Alexandra Sowa presents a comprehensive examination of GLP-1 receptor agonists, particularly focusing on Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound, and their transformative potential in the treatment of obesity and related metabolic disorders. Through a blend of scientific insight and practical guidance, Sowa addresses the growing obesity epidemic and offers a framework for utilizing these medications effectively as part of a holistic approach to weight management and health improvement.

Content Overview
Sowa’s book serves as both a user manual and a clinical guide, outlining how GLP-1s function in the body to promote weight loss and improve metabolic health. She begins by discussing the physiology of obesity, detailing how hormonal and environmental factors contribute to weight gain and the challenges many face in achieving sustainable weight loss. The narrative is reinforced with research findings that support the use of GLP-1 medications in clinical practice, making the case for their efficacy in reversing obesity and preventing weight-related diseases.

Thematic Exploration
One of the central themes of the book is the chronic nature of obesity as a disease rather than a simple issue of willpower or lifestyle choice. Sowa emphasizes the importance of understanding obesity’s biological underpinnings and advocates for a medicalized approach to weight management. This perspective is significant as it reframes the discourse around dieting and weight loss, moving beyond temporary fixes and “yo-yo dieting” to long-term strategies that incorporate medical intervention.

The book also addresses common misconceptions about weight loss treatments, providing clarity on the safety, efficacy, and potential side effects of GLP-1s. By demystifying these medications, Sowa empowers readers to make informed decisions regarding their health, promoting a more nuanced understanding of weight management.

Practical Guidance
In addition to the theoretical foundation, The Ozempic Revolution offers practical strategies for integrating GLP-1 therapy into everyday life. Sowa outlines actionable steps that readers can take to maximize the benefits of these medications, including dietary recommendations, lifestyle changes, and the importance of a supportive healthcare team. Her approach is comprehensive, addressing not only pharmacological intervention but also the psychological and social factors that impact weight loss and maintenance.

Style and Accessibility
Dr. Sowa’s writing is characterized by clarity and accessibility, making complex medical concepts understandable for a lay audience without sacrificing scientific rigor. The book is structured logically, allowing readers to follow the progression of ideas easily. Sowa combines her expertise as a physician with her passion for patient education, making this work an excellent resource for individuals struggling with obesity as well as healthcare providers seeking to better understand the role of GLP-1s in treatment.

Conclusion
The Ozempic Revolution is a timely and important contribution to the literature on obesity management and metabolic health. Dr. Alexandra Sowa successfully advocates for a paradigm shift in how obesity is perceived and treated, emphasizing the necessity of medical interventions alongside lifestyle changes. With its blend of scientific evidence, practical advice, and compassionate understanding of the challenges faced by those with obesity, this book serves as a valuable guide for both patients and healthcare professionals. As obesity continues to pose a significant health challenge globally, Sowa’s thoughtful insights and actionable strategies offer hope and direction for fostering lasting change in the pursuit of better health. This work not only informs but also inspires a more informed dialogue around the complexities of weight management in the modern era.

The Ozempic Revolution by Dr. Alexandra Sowa is a must-read for anyone curious about GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound, particularly if you're seriously considering these medications for health and weight loss, as I am. The book is a comprehensive and reassuring guide, offering not only scientific insights but also practical strategies to make the most of these medications while addressing concerns about potential side effects.

Dr. Sowa’s expertise as an obesity medicine specialist shines through in her clear, well-researched explanations. She demystifies how these drugs work, helping readers understand their profound potential to combat obesity and its related conditions. One of the standout aspects is how she addresses the psychological aspects of weight loss—tackling the stigma, emotional challenges, and mental hurdles often associated with taking GLP-1s.

For someone like me, who loves having a guide that answers questions and calms anxieties, this book delivers. Dr. Sowa not only explains how to determine if you’re a good candidate and navigate insurance coverage but also provides actionable advice on managing side effects, like nausea, which can be a source of apprehension. Her guidance feels empowering, removing much of the fear or confusion that can come with starting these medications.

The practical components of the book—like unique food plans, easy-to-follow recipes for days when appetite dips, and exercise recommendations—help bridge the gap between taking the medication and maintaining long-term health. These are invaluable tools for ensuring that the lifestyle changes necessary for sustaining weight loss become ingrained habits.

Dr. Sowa also dismantles myths and misinformation, cutting through the noise surrounding GLP-1s in traditional and social media. Her balanced approach to the "good, bad, and ugly" makes this book not only educational but also comforting for readers who may feel overwhelmed by conflicting narratives.

Overall, The Ozempic Revolution is a game-changing resource. If you're considering these medications, like I am, this book offers both the knowledge and the confidence to take the first steps. It’s a detailed, compassionate, and empowering guide to a healthier life.

Thank you to NetGalley, Alexandra Sowa, and William Morrow for the eARC of this book.

In this groundbreaking guide, dual board-certified internist and obesity medicine specialist Dr. Alexandra Sowa provides a comprehensive roadmap for navigating the transformative world of GLP-1 medications. The book goes beyond just explaining how these medications work, offering essential guidance on building proper nutritional foundations, developing sustainable habits, and preparing for the mental and emotional changes that accompany this journey. Dr. Sowa combines cutting-edge medical knowledge with practical strategies to help readers achieve not just weight loss but lasting health benefits. Drawing from her extensive experience treating thousands of patients, she presents a holistic approach that addresses both the physical and psychological aspects of weight management.

What sets it apart is Dr. Sowa's thoughtful exploration of the mental shifts that accompany treatment - from changes in how we experience pleasure from food to maintaining progress during life's disruptions. Her personal family history with weight struggles shared through touching stories about her grandmothers, Louise and Marie, adds a deeply human dimension to the scientific discussion. Beyond just weight loss, this book reframes obesity as a biological rather than a willpower issue, helping to eliminate shame from the conversation. While the medication can be transformative, Dr. Sowa's emphasis on proper nutrition, hydration, and healthy habits provides crucial guidance for optimizing results and achieving lasting health improvements rather than just pursuing thinness. I particularly appreciated her insights into how these medications can help with perimenopausal symptoms and her practical suggestions for finding new sources of joy beyond food.

This book will not be relatable to many people, but I really liked it and know I will refer to it a few more times. I am on Ozempic for type 2 diabetes and I found a lot of information in this book that I will use. It isn't just about the GLP-1 medication, but all about how to become healthier with the use of GLP-1 as part of the plan. It starts with an explanation about the various hormones and systems in the body that become sluggish and out of whack when you are obese. If you don't know, it also discusses the various issues (Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, apnea, fatty liver etc.). There are examples of patients of Dr. Sowa and their thoughts, journal entries, etc. that explain some of the process they went through. I really liked the various chapters on the "So-Well" program. Keeping a journal, planning meals, eating more protein, the order to eat food at meals and more. There are examples of what to eat to get the required amount of protein at a meal, what to eat for snacks, how to deal with celebrations etc. There is so much in this book that I can benefit from. Dr. Sowa is an obesity expert and I like that that is what she treats, so knows a lot more than a GP. If you are interested in finding out more about GP-1 medication, or if you are already taking it and want to learn about what lifestyle changes you should make, then I definitely recommend you pick this book up.

As someone who’s tried every diet trend under the sun, the buzz around GLP-1 medications like Ozempic definitely piqued my curiosity. I’ve seen rave reviews and horror stories in equal measure, so when I stumbled across The Ozempic Revolution by @alexandrasowamd I figured it was time to understand what was actually going on beneath all the hype.

Dr. Sowa does a brilliant job of breaking down complex science without making it feel like I’m back in biology class. The book is informative but easy to follow, and what I really appreciated was her holistic, no-shame approach to weight loss. This isn’t just about the meds, it’s about understanding your body, your habits, and the psychology behind why we struggle in the first place.

She dives into the how and why of GLP-1s, clears up misconceptions, and tackles everything from managing side effects to insurance hurdles. There’s even meal planning guidance and practical tips that feel genuinely useful, not just filler. I especially liked how she weaves empathy and empowerment into every chapter, it’s reassuring, especially if you’re on the fence about these meds like I am.

All in all, The Ozempic Revolution is smart, science-backed, and surprisingly readable. It’s answered a lot of my questions and even helped calm a few anxieties.

And hey, I never thought I’d say this, but I’m slowly starting to enjoy dipping my toes into informative nonfiction… who knew learning could actually be fun?

Alright so first of all I'm not quite sure what I was expecting when I picked up this book, but I didn't expect it to be essentially a how-to-guide for GLP-1. This author walks the reader through the steps of how to obtain GLP-1 and then walks you through every single thing you would need to know while on the medication. You get recommendations for meals, exercise, and many other things. The author also goes over things like food satisfaction, cravings, societal judgement, and potential mental health changes that can occur while on the medication. Yes, that sounds great but I didn't pick this book up for a how-to GLP-1. However that is not my issue with this book, I have two major issues with this book. This doctor does not discuss any potential negative side effects that this medication can have. The author also debunks certain "myths" and "false claims" surrounding this medication essentially by saying that they haven't seen these effects in their patients so therefore it must not be true. I think this a great medication with a potential for side effects but to dismiss potential side effects and skip over them in your book all about GLP-1 is dangerous. I also think every medication has the potential for side effects and just because you don't experience the side effects doesn't mean you can dismiss the experience of others on the same medication.

The Ozempic Revolution offers information regarding the use and impact of GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound on combating obesity and metabolic health. Dr Sowa highlights the fact that obesity is a chronic, complex, and progressive disease, not a personal failing or a result of weak willpower. It explores the mechanisms of GLP-1s, medical criteria for their usage, and their adverse effects.

The book excels in the fact that while everyone is out giving advice,  Dr Sowa gives us a practical approach to build healthy habits, manage medication side effects, and maintain progress during life’s inevitable disruptions. She also cautions that GLP-1s are not a magic solution and promotes long-term lifestyle shifts in nutrition, physical activity, and mindset that must run alongside medication for lasting results. She offers patient stories, personal anecdotes, and research to highlight the realities around medical intervention for weight.

What I loved the most is how she includes unique meal plans and recipes specific to the new needs and appetite changes of GLP-1 users, as well as thoughtful insights on the psychological shifts that accompany weight loss and changes in body image.

This book stands out with simple and accessible writing, empowering readers to make informed decisions and offering both reassurance and practical tools in their weight loss journey.

I absolutely loved and appreciated "The Ozempic Revolution" Just like many of Alexandra Sowa's patients, I have struggled with slow metabolism and weight loss my whole adult existence, so this book could not have arrived at a more appropriate time in my life. What jumped out at me was the sincere and earnest way Sowa started the book. Instead of medical information or obesity shaming, she began with a private conversation between her colleagues criticizing her choice in treating weight loss patients. I thought that was very brave and honest of her. I can just imagine how difficult it is to work with people that are looking for magic pills and instant results. By the end of the book I truly appreciated all the information, research, documentation and patients study that went in to this book. I appreciate everything about it, from the simple cover to the easy way all the information was laid out. This book convinced me to explore the injection medication as a weight loss solution. The book opened my eyes to a lot of my own bad habits and negative attitudes about my own journey. I am obviously not a Doctor and I am only one person in the sea of a massive struggle that many face. I found this book very helpful.

This is a fantastic book for anyone who has ever struggled with yo-yo dieting and is obese!

I picked it up at my local library because I have been taking Wegovy for almost two years. I have lost weight since I have been taking it, but I need help in navigating the side effects of this medication which is helping me become healthier, because I don’t want to stop taking it until I reach the maintenance phase. I have learned so much more than this. Dr. Sowa uses research and personal stories from her patients to help guide the GLP-1 user on their weight loss journey.

Weight loss for a lot of people is a lifelong struggle which can result insulin resistance and type two diabetes. This seems counterintuitive. Weight loss is supposed to help these things and not cause them. However, Dr. Sowa shows how repeatedly using restrictive dieting to lose weight can actually interfere with the body’s weight loss mechanism.

This is a great book for people who are thinking about trying GLP-1’s or have given up losing weight altogether and have decided to become okay with being obese.

I am incredibly interested in GLP-1's for all of their uses, including weight loss, and their anti-inflammatory benefits. As someone who has a chronic disease that doesn't necessarily cause obesity, but can cause severe inflammation, I've wondered if it could work for me and thought about speaking to a doctor.

This book was incredibly well written and informational - I would recommend it to everyone who is hearing the "horror stories" online, is suspicious of GLP-1 history, and wonders about the science. It's incredibly comprehensive. I would hand it to anyone who is going to be prescribed one of these medications as a guide to read before they begin, and to re-read as they take it.

My favorite part was the recipes at the end - I can't wait to try some of them out because they sound delicious!

The Ozempic Revolution by Alexandra Sowa, MD
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

For those of you who have followed my journey on @shawna_losing_for_life you might know I started on compounded semaglutide in February. Having already lost a significant amount of weight between 2014 and 2018, and fighting overweight and obesity my entire life, and being a 5 year employee of @weightwatchers who reached lifetime status, I know how to lose weight without medication. But keeping all the weight off the last two years, despite my knowledge and effort became a battle I couldn’t fight alone as I entered menopause. So began my trial with GLP1 medication. With only 25 or so lbs to lose (of the 100+ I lost) I mistakenly thought this would be easy! And let me be clear, this medication is a tool and while life changing for many, has been a very slow methodical approach for me. Using the information presented in this book as one of many resources to help me make choices in food, exercise and nutritional support, I’ve avoided side effects and slowly losing weight (20% of the way there). I’m in no hurry, and just satisfied to feel more in control, less obsessed with food and alcohol, and more focused on living a healthy lifestyle.

THE OZEMPIC REVOLUTION is an excellent resource for anyone considering or using the GLP-1 medications currently available. Whether someone received the Rx from a family doctor or from an online resource, the full experience is rarely described ahead of time. The drugs require lifestyle and eating changes in order to work; contrary to the common belief that simply taking them leads to significant weight loss. Author Alexandra Sowa provides resources as varied as food and mood logs to recipes. This is a welcome addition to the conversation surrounding weight loss drugs. I received my copy from the publisher through NetGalley.

While this book is clearly geared towards people who are taking one of the GLP-1s or considering doing so, it's also well worth the read for anyone who has struggled with their weight and diets over the years. In fact, I think it's worth a read for anyone who is just interested in eating healthier and understanding the science between nutrition and bodyweight.

If you are considering a GLP-1, this would be a very helpful book, as it looks at not only the science behind the medication, but also gives you a plan for a holistic approach to your health.

Very informative and easy and quick to read.

I received an advance review copy for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

When I saw The Ozempic Revolution By Alexandra Sowa was up for a Goodreads Giveaway I thought it was time I learned more about GLP-1s. Full disclosure, I have been on Ozempic for a year and a half and have lost 100 lbs and am now just maintaining with a minimal dose.

Sowa taught me so many things I had no idea about. Especially of interest was exactly how GLP-1s work in your body. My doctor said to take it and I took it with very little question on how it worked. Now I understand why it worked for me when no other diet would. I even had the gastric sleeve and gained weight after my initial loss.

Hands down The Ozempic Revolution should be given out as a handbook to anyone interested in GLP-1s. Sowa's knowledge and the information she has gathered from peer reviewed journals is unparalleled. It is noce to have all of the information in one place. She also includes recipes and tips for travelling and easy snacks amongst other things.

I highly recommend this book to everyone. I than Harper Collins and Alexandra Sowa for this amazing book.

This was okay. Very simple, but maybe good for someone just beginning to look into the topic. Im not sure i learned anything new about the medication, and i am still of the opinion those who need it to reduce health risks, should not be shamed for using it.
I think the author is also needlessly negative towards non medicated methods of weight loss (especially ironic because she then states that GLP1s only work when combined with life style changes, read: diet chances and exercise). But whatever, it was fine.

I loved that this was written in a conversational, friendly style and not bogged down with advanced academic/medical language. There are straightfoward takeaways that anyone could get from even a casual browsing of the book. I also appreciated the author's sensitivity to the myriad of complex feelings, stigmas, and biases that surround weight loss; she helps the reader acknowledge those while gently confronting the science, studies, and health outcomes that are related. For anyone curious about GLP-1s, this is a great introduction.

I read this in an hour or two. Sowa made the medical information easy to comprehend and approachable, though I almost wish there was more of it in comparison to the other content of the book (e.g., the recipe section). She struck a middle-of-the-road kind of tone, not evangelizing but also not careening in the direction of shaming or othering folks who deal with obesity. Framing the issue around disease prevention instead of being "skinny" helped the reader to focus on the overall "why" behind the reasons for weight loss. Overall a good primer for someone interested in learning the basics.

In this well written book Dr Alexandra Sowa skillfully guides the listener through the science and reality of weight loss drugs like Ozempic. She addresses the mis-information and misconceptions we’ve all heard. Using many examples drawn from patient experiences in her 10 year practice, she explains what people need to know and do to achieve good health. Her narration is a pleasure. She speaks in a tone of expertise and humanity using perfect diction. I learned a great deal about the subject and enjoyed every sentence.

Loved. We need more doctors like this - empathetic, focused on evidence and willing to take the time to educate. Obesity is a complicated disease and Dr. Sowa explains why - and how to harness the power of GLP-1s with a holistic plan that includes habits, nutrition, lifestyle and thought work. I particularly like her attention to how complicated weight loss is on emotions and her use of CBT to work through it.
