Martin Bjergegaard, started his first business on his 18th birthday, and co-founded in 2006 the successful "start up factory" Rainmaking together with 3 friends. Martin has always felt something was wrong with the traditional paradigm claiming that being a successful entrepreneur requires you to sacrifice most other aspects of life. When he was just a teenager he got a bit sad every time he read another autobiography about a famous entrepreneur who proudly revealed that in his life family and friends had been restricted to Sundays and Christmas holidays. He promised himself someday to write a book with a different set of role models. Well, here it is.

To learn from different angles Martin also spent some time in school and working for the big guys. A Masters in Strategy and Management, and a 15-month long (too long!) experience as a management consultant at McKinsey & Co. being the most notable. Martin learned to do market research and PowerPoint presentations, two skills he has successfully unlearned again. He learned something more useful when he spent another 15 months as a business developer for a famous Danish entrepreneur, Claus Meyer: that it can be extremely fun to be an entrepreneur, and to always keep your running shoes and a towel on hand so you can squeeze in some cardio exercise between meetings, no matter where you are or what time it is.

Martin insists that each day should be a fantastic one, and he loves to travel the world with his loved ones 8 weeks a year - recharging his batteries, playing sports and having fun. Back home he rarely works more than 45 hours per week. However, somehow, at the age of 38 he and his Rainmaking co-founders have managed to achieve 3 successful exits, have built a portfolio of 10 successful start ups with a total of 50 million dollars in annual revenues, 200 employees, and offices in London, Copenhagen and Berlin.

Alongside their business activities Rainmaking hosts huge charity dinners, have co-founded a charity, and established a school in India. Rainmaking is also behind the leading European accelerator program, Startupbootcamp, which is now each year supporting and investing in 100 start ups globally via permanent programmes in 10 cities. Their newest venture is co-working spaces, Rainmaking Loft, which are the home of hundreds of entrepreneurs in London, Copenhagen and Berlin.

Most books I've read about business management fall into two categories. (Yep, this is yet another example of the hedgehog versus foxes dichotomy.)

In the first category the author has One Big Idea. He spends time, usually too much time, motivating and explaining the Big Idea. He then applies the Big Idea to lots of situations - some apt, some not - until he has enough material to fill a book. Big Idea books are usually too long and almost never give enough detail for the reader to apply the Big Idea in practice. Most Big Idea books aren't really about big ideas of universal generality; they're about interesting ideas useful in certain situations if you practice them enough. In trying to discuss the Big Idea at book length, the author progressively undermines his assertion that the idea was truly big.

The second category is the Many Small Ideas books. The author collects tips and tricks and hints and maxims and mottoes, then tries to unify them under a vague theme. Many Small Ideas books are often structured as collections of short essays, each with a snappy title at the top and a memorable lesson - in bigger type and surrounded by a box - at the end.

The trick to reading a Big Idea book is knowing when to stop reading. When the author is no longer strengthening his case with each new illustration, you've reached the true size and utility of the idea, and you can stop reading. With Many Small Ideas books, the trick is to read quickly. After you've finished the book, you'll only care about or remember a few of the ideas. So read the whole book as quickly as you can and if any of the ideas stick with you, go back and re-read them.

"Winning Without Losing" is a Many Small Ideas book. The vague organizing theme is how you can "succeed in business while living a happy and balanced life". There are 66 small ideas, a couple of which I found interesting and memorable enough I'll try to apply them in my life and work. The writing is chirpy and uncluttered, like a better-than-average PowerPoint presentation.

I first discovered Martin and Winning Without Losing after seeing him on London Real TV

http://youtu.be/44y1c5M1YOY?t=3m27s

I bought the book and read it cover to cover and I can honestly say it has made me a happier person. I am much more able to pursue my life and business goals and yet feel as carefree and rested as when I was a little kid.

Powerful stuff!

Patika, ka nodaļas bija īsas un lietoti daudzi piemēri.
Ņemšu līdzi šādas atziņas:
- lai sasniegtu daudz, dažreiz tikai desmitais uzņēmums nesīs miljonus. (Nesen aizvēru savu kind of pirmo uzņēmumu ). But don’t give up! :)

Winning without losing consists of 66 short essays about all aspects of a healthy work / private life balance, how to boost your efficiency, get rid of time distractions etc etc. Not all essays are to the point, but most of them are and some of them are really valuable, so 5 stars here!

My favorite parts
- Assemble your wheel (meaning don't work alone or start a company alone, but start with a team)
- Get your sleep (yeah right with 3 small kids :-))
- Make yourself lean (also started to read Personal Kanban: Mapping Work Navigating Life
- Pause your mind
- Look for the good things
- Keep it simple

An entertaining read, full of practical tips and presented in a way that makes it easy to pick and choose the bits that work for you. I'm still a student but I felt like many of the strategies were applicable to my work as well, not just business or entrepreneurship. Would definitely recommend this book.

An awesome read, for understanding the importance of success and balance in business and life generally. Sacrificing one for the sake of achieving success in other is an old school concept, the right mindset, team, practices and technology one can achieve the "Dual Optimum" (success in business and balance for all other things in life that one always wants to have. Jordan and Martin have narrated the 66 tips towards achieving the dual optimum not just using their experiences but also of many other successful business role models, is quite an effort. Happy to have read this book and connected with it in many ways personally.

It’s more like a collection of glossy magazine articles than a serious book.
What is the book about? About how good it is to work as much as you want, not as much as the employer wants. To work with people who are pleasant to work with, not with those who were assigned by the company. You have to sleep for 8 hours, not 4 or 5 hours. Well, other commonplace truths are combined with the stories of successful startup owners, who have made millions of dollars. In general, we can say that it's all "little by little" from Jeffrey Fox, Jack Trout, Kotler, Joe Vitale, Harvey MacKay and Igor Mann.
The quintessence of the entire book is one quote from the middle of it (an example of one of the startups is given): "A project called Project Getaway, which provides groups of 10-20 entrepreneurs with a six-week vacation in Bali. All this time, they relax, have fun and work, launch startups - right from the beach loungers, sipping tropical cocktails". Well, "sipping tropical cocktails" lying on a lounge chair on an island in the Caribbean Sea is always a pleasure. But in order to say it, you don't have to write books.
In conclusion, a few tips from the authors of the book:
- A good holiday should be one of your top priorities
- Always look for a way to stand out from the crowd.
- Listen carefully to others; sincerely seek to understand their point of view
- Meditate 12 minutes a day
- Take important projects
- Unite with the people who share your goals
- Try holding meetings in the form of walks, jogging or cycling
- Making a list of things to do today
- Be outdoors more often
- Live where you feel good

3.75 stars (I was very much in doubt about the 3 or 4 stars, but as it's a 3.75, I'll follow the mathematical system and round it.)

It's quite difficult to write new things about succeeding in business while living a happy life. But it's not difficult to write about this. The problem is: It's almost impossible to put these in practice.
Well, I didn't find many different things in this book, but it received my 3.75 stars because it has a very easy way to show these things. The strategies are much easier to understand and follow.
Martin doesn't intend to make a thesis but to show us how to practice the strategies in a easier way and this is very important. The formatting of the book made it practical. And this is Winning without losing.

FOR those who never read those kind of books and want to; For those who prefer easier ways than complicated thesis; For those whose life is in a complicated way right now: this is the book.

An addendum:
I received this book in a GRs giveaway in exchange for an honest review.
Maybe if I was one that read a lot those kind of self-help book, I would have even give it a 4.5/5 stars, but I don't like very much self-help books. I enter the wrong giveaway and didn't know how to withdraw. Anyway, it was informative, a light read, gave me some good tips and - you know what? - I will keep it somewhere closer to take a look once or twice.

Winning Without Losing by Martin Bjergegaard and Jordan Milne is a book about the work/life balance in the context of entrepreneurs.

I really like the idea of this book. How to maintain a sense of balance in your life even though you're working to keep your company afloat or to grow it before it fails. The book is organized into 66 small essays representing 66 tips that can help you regain the balance. It is organized into seven sections: how to do things more smartly, how to do things differently than usual, how to eliminate things that waste your time and energy, how to keep moving even if life seems against you, how to design balance into your life, how to get into the mindset of balance and how to do it.

As the book is very fragmented I felt it easy and fast to read but felt it lacked a lot of elaboration on most of the subjects. The quality of each essay also varies greatly with some essays being distilled wisdom while others seem to be there to make up the numbers.

Overall it is a very interesting book. If this book had an extensive bibliography it would have been a great book but without it, it becomes a handy book instead to introduce you to some new ideas and thoughts you can try to pursue balance in work and life.

Winning Without Losing contains 66 essays (short, 2-3 page chapters) on tips and ideas for business owners and entrepreneurs on how to be successful in business *and* life.

There is a lot of focus on Life/Work balance, beating overwhelm, looking after yourself both physically and mentally, and growing as an individual who can help others.

I personally found the book inspirational. It was easy to digest (I found myself unable to read the book beyond a chapter or two, as I wanted to get on and implement what I'd learned from reading!) and offers practical advice from business leaders who have been there and done that.

Highly recommended!

This is one of the most inspiring books I have ever read, and Martin and Jordan, and all of their role models, really show you that being successful in your professional life doesn't have to cause any shortcomings in your personal life. I love the way the book is built up with a series of easily read essays that provide you with specific tools and motivating stories that make you want to create the best life possible for yourself and the people closest to you.
So read this book, forget 'no pain, no gain' and start enjoying every aspect of your life.

Becoming wildly successful while still living a full life sounds like an idea that is too good to be true. But Martin shows us that not only is it achievable, but he also provides us with a number of easy to follow strategies to get there. I find this read very inspiring and a great reminder that having a great career doesn't necessarily translate to sacrifices in other areas of life.

Very easy to read. Well structured book, short and to the point, and extremely well written.

Many good idea, very practical and easy to implement....But it's geared towards entrepreneurs, not so much towards employees. Also many of the ideas are not groundbreaking or brand new. What is new is collecting all these strategies into one great package.

Authors of this book wanted it to be a collection of short advices. As a result, I didn't remember anything from what I read. I prefer books dedicated to one specific topic.

Although I didn't find this book useful, I still would recommend to read it. I think, this book is perfect for those who just started exploring productivity.
