Transylvania is the birthplace of Dracula, where the Pied Piper carried the children of Hamelin, and home to Harry Potter’s dragons. It’s a place where truth is often stranger than streams run with silver, the mountains are full of gold, and haystacks can be found in trees. Newly awakened from its communist years, Transylvania is changing rapidly. In splendid photographs and sparkling text, this handsome large-format book captures a land both steeped in tradition and embracing the future.
This is both a good picture book, and a good book which explains the area in Romania known as Transylvania. There is a lot of history and Bronwen Riley does a good job of giving an overview of the culture and people of this area. She explains very well the people who lived and still lived in this area.
There are a lot of pictures/photos, and this helps give the reader a good idea of what Transylvania looks like. What strikes me as interesting is that if there was a comparision photo with some of the farming photos, there wouldn't be much difference to the methods of farming in some cases.
This is a good book for an overview on the people and the history of Transylvania.
This is a very interesting book about "The land beyond the forest" and the people who live there. It has many great photo's and articles about one of the most unspoiled regions of Europe, were the wolf and the bear still live free!
Very thought-provoking travel memoir likely to appeal to readers interested in the culture, history and religious diversity of Romania and Transylvania, in particular.
