Bounty Hunter: The Black Tulip Chronicles

Rate this book
A king desperate to save his kingdom… in search of a woman doing everything she can to never be found…

Vera
I’m a Black Tulip… feared, hated, and hiding. I masquerade behind the magic of other factions while taking all sorts of jobs to survive, and bounty hunting is one of ‘em. I told myself I’d never take another Class A contract, they're the worst of the worst. But high risk means high reward, and suddenly, I need money—a lot of it.

Now I’m lost in the forest after arresting a bounty I’m more attracted to than I should be. Even worse, he’s asking questions about the Black Tulips and trying to convince me he’s not the criminal I know he is. But I’m determined to get my pay. How hard can it be to haul one cuffed criminal across a kingdom, stay alive, and keep my secrets and heart to myself?

Ikar
I’ll be the last of the High Kings if I don’t find a Black Tulip to restore lucent magic. But after being killed by kings long ago, the Tulips went into hiding… the last person they’ll want to see is me.

I journey to find one of the elusive women, hoping to convince her I’m not a murderer. But my plans go awry when I’m captured by a captivating, wannabe bounty hunter. Time is running out, the stubborn woman won’t believe anything I say, and she’s cuffed me with magic-blocking cuffs, leaving us nearly defenseless. How will I save my kingdom with her in the way?
Bounty Hunter is the first book in a no-spice, slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers epic fantasy romance series for fans of Shari Tapscott and Kenley Davidson.

What a fantastic debut novel from Kaylee Jarvis!

The world, creatures, and magic system she created was detailed, well thought out and super immersive. She made it easy to picture everything she described and it made you want to join the MCs on their epic adventure.

I love that the MCs are about as opposite as you can get but they are both so easy to love.

Vera is courageous, kind, and loyal to a fault. I love that she would do anything for those she calls family even when it makes her own life 10x harder. She shows that sometimes loving someone means sacrificing something and yet she never regrets that decision. I loved the tension between Ikar and Vera as well. There was the perfect push and pull, banter, and camaraderie between them.

Ikar is the perfect MMC. I love that he is trying to do his best for the kingdom he holds dear even if it could ruffle some feathers. I love that he is strong, powerful, and intimidating and yet, has the softest spot for Vera. Plus he is like the ultra protective hero even when he is being treated as a criminal by Vera and she isn’t quite sure she can trust him. The patience Ikar has truly amazes me because throughout the book he has every reason to be short with Vera or complain, but he is always the perfect gentleman with her. He will definitely be one of your favorite MMCs.

This book will keep you on your toes as Vera and Ikar battle the gloam (darkness/evil) and battle creatures bent on destruction, all the while trying their best to not give in to their attraction and pull towards one another.

If you are looking for an epic fantasy quest with a slow burn romance give this one a go! Though it does end halfway through their quest and you won’t get a happily ever after yet, I promise you will be looking forward to book 2 as much as I am!

I loved reading this book! It’s one of my favorite books I’ve read this year. Every time I had to put it down to take care of something I couldn't wait to pick it back up again. The book had my attention from the very beginning and never let go. The Bounty Hunter is a perfect example of how adult no-spice fantasy romance without strong language can be so good and swoon-worthy. Usually, when there are dual POVs, I prefer one over the other, but I equally enjoyed reading from both main characters' POVs. Vera, the FMC, has elements of a strong female lead, but she is also compassionate. Ikar, the MMC, has his priorities straight and he is protective. I feel that both of these characters are a good example to people. I like the magic system and lore as a whole, which is explained well, and how there is also magic unique to a group of women. Many action scenes left my heart pounding, the plot is incredibly fun to read, and I think the pacing is PERFECT. If I were to describe this book in one word, it would be ADVENTUROUS. I plan on getting a physical copy when the book releases soon, and I am very excited to read the sequel in 2025.

I received an eARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A King desperate to save his Kingdom, in search of a woman doing everything she can- never to be found.

Bounty Hunter starts off with an intriguing prologue from 400 years prior, that pretty much had me buckling my seat belt- I was in for the long haul. Even though the beginning of the actual story was a little slow going, after about 25 percent, things took off. It’s action, banter and fun made up for it. I found both main characters to be extremely likable. I’m a sucker for forced proximity and the way these two interact was great! Vera had me laughing out loud quite a bit with her internal dialogue. Ikar was level headed, super patient and just plain sweet. The magic system was unique and I’m looking forward to seeing how Ikar and Vera’s magic work together in the next one! The world seemed rich, with just enough detail to where things didn’t seem daunting or overwhelming. Love that the budding romance is slow burn and spice free! Highly recommend!!

AHHH I can't believe it's over! I need more!

Wowwy WOW wow. I literally could not put this book down and stayed up late finishing it because ..

1. It's AMAZING! The world building is exquisite. It's gorgeous and the magic system created, the premise and the stakes of the story, absolutely beautiful and had me invested from the prologue onward.

2. Vera and Ikar and their chemistry is killer. Oh man oh man and then their growth together as they went on adventures.. AHHH I LOVED IT!

3. Like a good epic fantasy I'm left with so many questions while still being satisfied with where the story ended. I need to know what happens next and I'm chomping at the bit for the next books because seriously! Ahhh I need to know how this story ends!

Wow. Just wow. I will not stop thinking about this amazing book for a long time. It was epic.

💋 This is a slow torturous burn romance. The romantic tension is there and there's a kiss.

⚠️ Both MCs are orphans. Death and injuries from fantasy elements

This is one of those books I couldn't stand to put down! Kaylee Jarvis has woven a masterful tale of suspense, courage, romance, and mystery, and I absolutely love it!

Vera is a Black Tulip--one of a group that has been hunted by the kings for hundreds of years--trying to make a living helping bounty hunters with her magic. But she's hampered by the huge amount she has to pay regularly in order to keep up the subscription on her magic Tulip bracelet (which prevents her from being found and hunted by a king). When her best friend doesn't have the money to pay her Tulip dues, Vera takes on a dangerous assignment: helping to track a Class A criminal. She finds the criminal--but she's gotten separated from the bounty hunter she was helping. She's got to bring this guy, Ikar, to justice by herself. But why is she so attracted to this annoyingly handsome and thoughtful criminal?

Ikar, the High King, is desperate to save his realm from the encroaching gloam (and its monsters) that threaten everyone's survival. Then he learns something that astonishes him: an ancient prophecy says that in order to save his realm, he has to marry a Black Tulip. But the Tulips are all in hiding. Ikar takes a couple close friends and sets off on the difficult task to find the Tulips. But then he runs into a girl named Vera who slaps a magic-blocking cuff on his wrist and says he's her prisoner. Having gotten separated from his friends, and without his magic, Ikar has no choice but to go with her. She sure gets herself into a lot of dangerous situations. And maybe there's more to her than meets the eye. But Ikar just needs to find and marry a Tulip. He can't let himself fall for this girl--but he's falling hard.

Vera and Ikar were fantastic together, and their banter and chemistry were off the charts! I loved Rupi, Vera's pet bird; I loved the creativity and vivid imagery of the worldbuilding and the magic system; and I can't wait to see what happens in the second book!

🗡️ The vibes:
- forced proximity
- Fantasy
- He’s searching for her
- She’s hunting him
- Slowwwww burn
- Closed door

🗡️ My thoughts.
The set up for this was perfection. The way all the stars collided for Ikar and Vera to be forced to work together was *chef’s kiss*.

🗡️ I loved seeing grown adults in a closed door fantasy novel. This isn’t YA (not that there’s anything wrong with YA 😂), and I thoroughly enjoyed an ADULT fantasy that wasn’t open door. Why is that so freaking hard to find??? (I’ve been adding a lot of recs to my TBR and working through them! Keep the closed door fantasy recs coming.)

🗡️ The plot for this series is so intriguing and I thought this book did the set up for future books very well. The fantasy elements seemed well thought out, the magic system was interesting, and the characters felt well rounded to me.

🗡️ The way Ikar and Vera developed a friendship was just my cup of tea with the slowest of slow burns. There was so much freaking tension between these two. I loved them so much. And don’t even get me started on Rupi. Such a cutie bb animal companion that I LOVED.

🗡️ The formatting of this book was great. It looked so professional. From the cover to the map to the little art pieces on each chapter heading - this book looked fully polished to me. It felt professionally edited to me- which is a bonus! And I felt like the writing style was really solid in general, but especially for a debut. Color me impressed.

🗡️ I will say this ended very anticlimactically, and I legit felt like I shouldn’t be at the end yet. I was expecting a cliff hanger or a huge dramatic ending - as most fantasy books end in this type of way- but this one kind of just ended feeling like a pause in the middle of the journey. Either way- I’m anxiously awaiting book 2.

🗡️ There was so much that I enjoyed about this one, and it’ll likely be on my favorites list at the end of the year.

This book was such a refreshing read. The world building and creatures seemed unique but not obscure, and it was easy to follow.

I admire Vera and her determination to be independent. She wants to make her own way and is determined to do it no matter what. She proves to be strong and resilient, and has some sass.

Ikar is duty bound to a fault, and cares for almost everyone. He's easily likable which is refreshing in a sea of books that are fully of morally grey mmcs.

The slow burn in this book was delicious! I don't know how they haven't guessed at each others identities by the end of the book 😅. I definetly think Ikar is starting to figure things out.

The ending of the book has me itching for book 2! If i could give this book more stars I would. Highly reccomend reading!

This book is fantasy, adventure, and romance all mixed in one. Creative world building which gives the main characters unique obstacles to overcome. Strong female lead character. Dual perspective writing. The main characters not only have intertwined stories, but have intertwined quests and they don’t realize it. If one succeeds in their quest, the other cannot! This is a fun, fast-paced read that is a closed door romance.
Highly recommend!

Oh my… to be burned in the slowest of ways. I’m only glad I just finished book one—with book two releasing next month! 🤩
Between the monarchal tension, the varying magical advantages of each faction, otherworldly creatures, and the crackling tension, I was completely swept into this intriguing story!
Both characters’ identities are hidden, creating an undercurrent of tension you’ll be pining for the entire time. I don’t want to give anything away, but Kaylee did a fantastic job with the world-building and character depth. I cannot wait to see how everything plays out in the next book.

This ending? Are we kidding?! 👀💜

This closed-door, epic fantasy novel is a debut and that blows my mind. It has a straight-forward magic system of checks and balances, light vs dark that I didn’t need a glossary to understand. It still felt unique in its inception, and I appreciated that. Listen I love a fantasy that harkens to other like-minded stories with similar plots. It works because it works! This story is its own kind of thing. I haven’t ever read anything quite like it. The heroine for one thing, is an adult. I feel like we are behind the 17 year old in crisis era, ya know?

My favorite part of this story is a toss up between the adventure and battle between light vs dark. The author did a great job of continually calling me back to the main issue: darkness was spreading because light wasn’t shining. And if that isn’t life, I just don’t know what is. The adventure is meandering and epic. They go through so many lands, battles, hijinks, circumstances, you name it. I really enjoyed traveling the different areas. It kept me engaged and invested.

Y’all I’m lying— my favorite part of this book was actually Rupi, the animal companion. I LOVE ANIMAL COMPANIONS!

Now Kaylee knows exactly what she’s done with this book, and I just hope she’s well on her way with book two. I needed it a month ago.

~A king desperate to save his kingdom... in search of a woman doing everything she can to never be found…

“My fate is tied with those of my people.”

Friends, Bounty Hunter, is a riveting story! Oh my goodness, it is a captivating tale of intense suspense, great courage, sparkling romance, and deep mystery! I thoroughly enjoyed this story with the sparkling romance but, with none of spice! It is the first book in an epic fantasy romance series and will have your full attention! From the first to the last page, you will be thoroughly engaged, invested, and simply in awe! I will warn you though, that while the ending is satisfying, you will have to stay in tune patiently, for more to come in 3025 with book two! —>Do not let this deter you from waiting to discover the intriguing creative world, creatures, magic system, curses, or the layered and endearing characters that are within! The banter, the chemistry, the humor are spot on! Add in magic, secret identities, high stakes, dual perspectives, challenges, slow burn tension, surprising plot twists, intertwined quests, and you have everything you want and need! This is a beautiful epic tale, where two people have everything to lose and are doing their best for those they love at the same time! This is an amazing debut novel that is worth the read! I am here for it and for more!🙌🏻📚❤️

“She’s a confusing one. Captor of my magic, and potentially my heart, if I don’t protect it better.”

-Content: Some moments of mild peril and violence. There is magic involved and spells. Some disturbing circumstances/deaths (well written and not overly graphic-mild), tension.

Wow, what a ride. This book was packed with excitement and adventure.

I really like Ikar. He’s a good man, and a great king, who only wants to do what is best for his kingdom, even if it means sacrificing his own happiness in the process. Once he knows what he needs he goes after it. Just like that.

Vera just wants a simple life, away from those who would hunt her down for being a Black Tulip. She will do anything to get away from her current path, including taking on a bounty contract for a Class A criminal. Little does she know this will throw her onto a path there’s no coming back from…

Can we just take a moment to talk about Vera’s pet bird Rupi? What an adorably fluffy little thing with a “spiky” personality. She was definitely a favorite side character for me, and I’m not usually that drawn in by most of those. Maybe it’s because she’s a bird.

I really enjoyed reading this book. There was an abundance of action to keep you interested all along the way. I feel like the author gives you enough of an introduction into the lives of the two main characters that you feel fully invested in their successes and failures along the way, as well as their interactions with each other.

The world-building is really well done, and I could picture it so well, as though I was there right alongside the main characters. I was so invested that when I turned the last page I couldn’t believe it was over leaving me needing the next book right away.

This is a slow burn, no-spice, enemies-to-lovers romantic fantasy.

I’m already so ready for the second book.

This book is the definition of forced proximity!! I haven't read a book quite like this one. It is a fast-paced adventure from cover to cover. The dual POV was perfected by Kaylee Jarvis. There is a battle of light and dark, and a king desperate to save his kingdom. You have an orphaned girl turned fierce woman. I enjoyed that both of the main characters are grown, instead of being freshly out of high school. Vera and Ikar both have hidden identities that make for so many comical scenes while also causing both of them heartache. I giggled to myself every time she had to remind herself that she was in charge and when she would call Ikar HER criminal. I couldn't put this book down and stayed up way too late reading until I fell asleep. Rupi, Vera's animal companion is my favorite character in this book. I just LOVE this bird!!!

"Something about this man puts me dangerously at ease, even has me removing cemented bricks from my fortified, emotional walls. It feels a lot like we’ve developed a neutrality of some sort, and I only just arrested him two nights ago."

✴✴✴✴✴ (I would give so much more if I can)

~
Where do I even start? This book is utter perfection. It has everything you want and everything you need.

I liked how it started, how the story began, with a slow and steady introduction to the characters and their worlds, which developed beautifully and woven together in each chapter. Vera had to work super hard to get where she is now, and the only thing she has in her mind is to do something for herself, away from all the hatred Black tulips have to endure. However, her plans changed because she needed a ton of money. Therefore, she was willing to take on a Class A contract, which seemed her only option. That’s when she meets Ikar.

And Ikar, God, he is such a benevolent king. Everything he does is for the kingdom; his character is noble and overflowing with green flags. I loved the character.

Can we take a moment to appreciate the characters’ names? They fit so well together that I could visualize everything as if the story were unfolding.

Our beloved author is currently working on another book in this series. I cannot wait to dive into this universe and reconnect with these characters again. I already miss them!

Rating- I would give a million stars for this story as it quickly became one of my favorites, and I can’t wait to hold the book in my hand to re-read and annotate it. I just love the feeling of this fantastic book in my hand.

Finally, thank you very much dearest Author for this amazing book and letting me read the advance Reader copy. It’s such an honor and I’m super grateful. Good luck for the release and the next book! ♥︎☻☻

Such a fantastic book!!! I have read a lot of fantasy books and this one is so so good. It takes a little in the beginning because of it having to world build and set the characters back stories but I am so glad it did because you can imagine it all so well. Vera is strong, brave, and humble. She has no idea the power that she actually possesses, which makes her even more likable. Ikar's drive for putting the kingdom first and doing what needs to be done even at the risk of looking crazy and saying goodbye to ideas he had since childhood makes him the best type of hero. If you love fantasy, enemies to lovers, hidden identity, the cutest little animal sidekick, magic, and lots of adventure mixed in with humor then this book/series is for you. I can not believe I now have to wait for the rest of the series!!

This is your next Romantasy read!! Trust me. It is AMAZING ❤️‍🔥 The secret identities and the slowburn tension 🙌🏻🙌🏻 it gives me feels that I loved from Powerless but with a deeper story, more secrecy of identity, and more changes in scenery. I am totally in love with this book and NEED book two!!! I am so nervous for how the political intrigue will play out in book two. I’ll just be over here sitting on the edge of my seat until it comes out. It’s not a major cliffhanger ending, I’m just dying to know more and continue the story.

I absolutely love this book! From the moment I started it, there was no way I was putting it down. Kaylee Jarvis did a fantastic job of writing an amazing slow burn romantasy filled with high stakes adventures, hidden identities, and so much sizzling tension!

The characters were written so well. I loved that Vera wasn’t this warrior goddess fierce woman. She knew her limitations and her shortcomings and didn’t try to be anything else. She is kind and caring, but so guarded having had to spend her entire life hiding who she really is. She felt like a real person, with very real limitations and flaws and I really appreciate that when it comes to fantasy stories. I also loved Ikar. He was ever a gentleman, despite being help captive under false accusations. I will say that I was very frustrated with his constant “only I can save the kingdom” steam of thought. As you read you learn more about the history and with that knowledge, dear reader, you know he is not the one causing his kingdom to fall into ruin. But of course he doesn’t know that and so he simply blames himself for everything.

The world building in this was really cool, part of which is a magic system that demands balance. We literally got to know more about the land as they themselves were trekking through it and it offered some really cool concepts, perspectives, and cultures to be discovered.

The Romance! I’m a sucker for a good slow burn story and Kaylee absolutely delivered. It made me squeal to watch these two grow closer together, the spark that they have growing, and the internal struggle they each go through as they try to fight it. The payout is so worth it. And I really appreciate that this is a no-spice fantasy. Honestly, I think it adds more to the story and their inexplicable draw to one another.

I cannot wait to see what happens next, especially after what Ikar says on the last page and the events that had been leading up to the ending. I know it will likely be messy, cause how can it not when two people are hiding their identities!, and I am so invested.

Action packed and a great developing romance

I'm not great at writing reviews without giving away plot, so I'll keep this simple. This is a great fantasy novel, with neat world building and great character development. Excited to read more about these characters and see where the story continues to go! Lots of humor and light hearted fun, which makes the story even more fun and enticing!

Leuk boek!

This book was so fun! I am picky about my books, and this one is a must-read. The world Kaylee Jarvis created is magical and beautifully described. The characters have so much depth and the budding romance is perfectly paced and full of flirty tension. This one has it all- romance, magic, fantasy, sympathetic (and not-so-sympathetic) villians, and a storyline full of sweet moments and thrilling plot twists. 10/10 recommend!

I cannot tell you how much I absolutely loved this book! The world building was so well done. I found myself instantly connecting with the characters and getting completely wrapped up in the story. This book is full of fantasy, action, adventure, mystery with romance and fun witty banter. It is a clean read but not lacking in the slow burn category. I cannot wait for the next one! I highly recommend it!!
Vera, hiding her identity as a Black Tulip, agrees to join a high stakes bounty to help her best friend.
Ikar, hiding his identity as the high king in search of a Black Tulip to save his kingdom, finds himself falsely accused with a bounty on his head.
The two find themselves alone with secrets, adventures, and of course building tensions.

Adventure, fantasy, no spice romance, and just good reading. I loved it and it’s probably one of my favorite reads this year.
