'I will vanish into the night; change my body to wood or stone; sink into the earth and walk through walls and locked doors. I will be killed many times, yet will not die; change my face and become invisible, able to walk among men without being seen.' This is the convenant of a ninja of the Way of the Tiger, taught to you by your slain foster-father Naikishi. Before you were ever known as Avenger, before your quest for vengeance would change the world of Orb, you were to face great evil in the idyllic Island of Plenty. You are the youngest of five Initiates of the Inner Circle challenging to become Grandmaster of the Five Winds. Your journey will lead you from ancient cities, across towering mountains, and into wild forests. There is evil stirring in these lands, determined to destroy you and your allies, and it shall turn your challenge into the greatest ordeal you have yet faced. THE WAY OF THE TIGER is the role-playing adventure classic now revised and expanded for today. You choose the skills and martial arts moves to defeat your enemy, gaining knowledge and honing your abilities to use in further books. ARE YOU READY FOR THE WAY OF THE TIGER?
An exciting, kick-ass ninja adventure. Well, kick ass, heads, guts, etc. And remember, this is a GAME book, where you take the role of a ninja who has to fight all sorts of foes to complete the mission.
This is a prequel to the Way of the Tiger series that was famous in the '80's. After a massive response from a crowd-funding event, they re-edited the series and commissioned Dave Walters to write this prequel. It includes all new beautiful artwork depicting some of the fantastic opponents - human and otherwise - that you will be up against.
There has also been a lot of thought gone into these foes. They aren't just a collection of ugly beasts. Dave Walters, of the Samurai Apprentice fame, knows a lot about the history and folklore of Japan and China. I believe all of the creatures come from Japanese legend, which gives it that stamp of authenticity. It also makes the game action more interesting since each creature needs to be tackled in a different manner - you can't resort to the same old punch. Hence, when playing the game, much care needs to be taken in deciding which blows to use: a throw might not work on a large beast because it would be impossible to unbalance them, or you might need a high punch to reach a tall warrior. The situations are well-crafted, too. Don't be sweet and innocent - you'll go to Heaven, but sooner than expected.
Similar to the style that has worked so well in the Samurai Apprentice books, Dave Walters provides enough, brief details to give a flavour of the setting without getting bogged down in description, resulting in a fast-moving story appropriate for an action gamebook. Dave had a tall order to meet the expectations of the Way of the Tiger fans and from what I've heard, and in my own opinion, he more than delivers.
The only disappointment I found in this excellent prequel was that there were no combat or fate modifiers, or useful items, that could be taken into book one. But that's just a little bit of whining, this book definitely has the feel of the originals and the fantasy Japan setting is really cool.
