Christians live in the in-between, the time between our new birth as God's children and our entrance into the glory that Jesus has won for us. During this time, we will be "grieved by various trials," the Bible says. Life in the In-Between focuses on two things. The first is “the hope that is within us” as a remedy for the common malady of anxiety. The second is the afflictions sent by “the mighty hand of God” and our duty to “humble ourselves.” How should Christians respond to anxiety and afflictions? How does God relate to afflictions in the in-between, and what are his purposes? Will he really lift us up? God's word gives us clear answers to these questions.
A very gracious and biblical perspective on how we can navigate this life before we reach glory. Sam doesn’t sugar coat suffering but he does provide great encouragement through Jesus—the sufferer who can sympathize, humble and lift us up.
This was such an incredibly helpful book. I've wrestled with anxiety for well over a decade. I've struggled with the sinful side and the physical side. I've gotten help from pastors and chiropractors. Slowly but surely, I've made small baby steps to regain a certain level of calm. This book helped me take some of the last steps. It was the gentle, swift kick in the seat of the pants I needed.
I appreciated Sam's dealing with both the physical and spiritual sides of anxiety and depression. I appreciated him defining his terms so communication can happen. I appreciated that he pointed out where and why we're having generational miscommunications. And I very much appreciated the reminder that there is no point in this life where we can avoid affliction, that that is to expect the wrong things from this life. And, finally, I'm thankful for the rooting in the theological truth of who I am, who God is, and what reality is.
I plan on reading this book regularly because I have a tendency to be addicted to anxiety.
Sam Renihan does a wonderful job of describing the multi-layered pictures of our constantly changing fears, anxieties, and emotions while also calling the Christian to be reminded that the remedy for such turbulence is to cast oneself on the impassible, unchanging God of Scripture. This book is very balanced, striking a wonderful tone of our own culpability regarding anxiety, how those anxiety’s can be impacted by life in a fallen world, all while offering a balm of grace to those impacted with excellent pastoral care!
Short and sweet, this book outlines the topic of anxiety and affliction and how we should and can face it as Christians. This material is theological and practical, how a Christian lives in light of the greatness of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Sam Renihan offers a refreshing & encouraging view on the struggles Christians face with anxiety, affliction, and submitting ourselves under the mighty hand of God. This should be required reading for every biblical counselor. I highly recommend this book to any & all weary pilgrims.
