Only a select few in the human world knew of the existence of the V-Unit, a small group of highly trained Marines - who happened to be vampires. And it would have stayed that way. But when events in the vampire world, threatened the stability of the human world, the powers that be called for the unit's specialized services. An intrepid war correspondent, Bronson Rudan, who'd seen more than his fair share of fighting, stumbles across the unit by accident, and is drawn into their world. Bronson has no problem with that, given that he gets to spend time with a hunky Marine Lieutenant, Sarge. Although he won't remember any of this when they're through. At least, that was the plan...
Max Vos is best known for his ‘inappropriate’ side. Bringing readers a range of stories with an unexpected edge. His bestselling novel My Hero is a hot and steamy romance, while his banned book Going Home questions what you know of love. With something for everyone, there is a Max Vos book for you. Creativity has been a lifelong passion for Max, who retired from being a chef in 2011 and turned to writing. His strong relationships with the women in his life influence his stories and Max’s Southern charm shines through. Each new book will give you something to explore and love.
edit: So I've had a bit more time to contemplate this story and discussed it a bit with a couple of people. I still don't like the way certain things were handled but I feel that my original rating and some of my comments were harsher than they would have been had I not been reacting so emotionally. I'm going to go ahead and leave the original review intact, but I am changing my rating to what I think more truly reflects my feeling about this book as a whole and not just the part that I didn't like.
The newest release from Max Vos has been two years in the writing. It's finally finished and it was worth the wait. The V Unit is completely different from anything else Max has written. Though it seems all of his books are different from anything else he has written. His talent isn't fenced in by genre, he is able to write contemporary romance and POW violence and paranormal soldier love stories. That is what we call talent.
The V Unit contains hot vampires, which I totally thought I was over until I met Max's brand of vamp. Hot Marines, a hot reporter and a bunch of rogues that Sarge, Bronson and Woody need to deal with. The one common ingredient in all of Max's work is the sex. There's a lot of it and it burns up the pages. There is sex everywhere, between more than two participants (notice I didn't say two "men"), and it is hot and dirty, just the way I like it.
Well... Okay. Going in this book started off good with an interesting plot and good characters. Then it got stilted writing, sex like it was explained to a doctor or right out of a porn. The vampires became stereotypes and the main characters emotionless captain cardbords.
I got the feeling that the author wanted to create rough and tough men, but instead they became empty fillers.
Yeah this didn't work for me. Which was too bad, because it could have been a really good story. But it lost its stamina and depth around a quarter way in.
Vampires and Marines, how can that combo miss? Well it doesn't in this book. I loved everything about the characters , story, and the rough and tumble sex.
This story involves an elite unit of Marines who are no longer mortal. Throw in a sexy reporter, who stumbles upon their secret, add ancient vampires living among us, take this shake it , not stirred and you have a fun, wild read.
This is the perfect book if you are looking a great fun read. I fervently hope Max Vos has plans for another book with these characters. I might just have to beat down his door till he does. Winner, winner chicken dinner. I give it an Oorah! full of stars.
* A paranormal, Sci-Fi type tale of the future in Washington, D.C. and beyond, where elite Vampire warriors, some are strong, ancient and powerful, try to keep order in the world. Many are Marines, who were killing machines even before they turned. Here we have efforts being made to find the "rogue" faction that is on a spree.
* David/Sarge, Lt. Farragut, USMC, commander of the V Unit. Each and every character is different and interesting.
Just back from Afghanistan, * Pulitzer winning Journalist, Bronson Rudan, tattooed, loyal, honest, is a tough hard core investigator, no matter how scary the story gets.
An attack in an alley lands Bronson in Sarg'e care at headquarters, we see their interactions, plans and acceptance. Sarge and Bronson met about 6 years earlier in Iraq. Now, they can hardly keep their hands off of each other. Their sexy, raw, rough, gritty scenes are also full of passion. There are other sexy times from other team members, but those do not include our main guys, although menages are hinted about.
* It's action packed, brutal, and graphic in the rogue spree, (rape) and the * justice that is given when caught. Yikes ! Bronson is so brave all along, and in the end, wow ! ENJOY !
Wow. I just knew this one was going to be good, and I was not disappointed. Right off the bat, I loved the writing style. It just has a believable and realistic feel to it that I really enjoyed.
We learn pretty quickly who the major players are, that being the V-Unit, led by Sarge. The rest of the Unit are quite close, sharing the same secret of being in this elite military unit of vamps. They also share each other here and there, though one couple sticks together more often than not. Reporter Bronson happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and ends up under the watchful eye of Sarge and the crew. These two burly guys hit if off right away, though they’ve actually met briefly in the past.
Then there is Woody, one of the elite vamps who sits on the committee of elders, the governing body of vamps. He is sexy and quite charming, and he and Sarge become friends and team up with Bronson to help cover up the mess that has now come to the attention of some humans. While Sarge and Bronson make up the main couple here, Woody gets in on the action as well in one heck of a hot scene.
The bigger issue being faced by the vamps is a string of rogues that are getting very sloppy. The vamps team up with the V-Unit to seek out and discover the motives behind the major players creating these rogues. This leads to some great action and even gruesome scenes.
There is a lot going on in this story, but it is very well written, with smoking hot sex, growly bear marine vamps, a bit of love and even some heartbreaking sadness. There is a rape that takes place which is somewhat integral to the plot but that is also very well done. This is definitely not the typical vamp romance with your every day couple, but I really loved how it all played out. There are a lot of characters to like here, though admittedly, I would have liked to have seen or gotten more background on some of them.
This contains everything I’ve come to love about Max’s books, and even though this was a stand alone story and wraps up nicely, I found I wasn’t quite ready for it to end, and it definitely left me wanting to see more from this world.
Original Blog Post: http://headouttheoven.blogspot.com/20... Bronson Rudan, a highly respected war correspondent, literally stumbles into a world that surpassed his wildest imagination. Witness to the death of a youth and a killer his mind could not contain, he finds himself deep within the world of vampires and a top secret military unit whose job was to secure a territory from a rogue.
David, or Sarge, gave up his life for his country with full knowledge of what his new role was going to be. Never once did he think he could live in a world of the paranormal and still find a man whom he could trust and love, for eternity. His role as a vampire has now overlapped his role as a Marine Lieutenant and his duties take him to different levels of danger. Will he be strong enough to protect Bronson from this dark life?
The V Unit. The minute I saw this was from Max Vos, I just knew I had to have it and immediately made it a part of my wishlist. Well, now that I have finished reading it, I am happy to say that I have not been disappointed.
This is a vampire story. This is also a romance. The plot twists, it turns and becomes a menage and an erotic adventure. Then the read takes you on a dark journey into the vampire's political world that involves an ancient Queen, Princes, a Vampire Council, a lot of planning on the sly, spying from within and without. There are a whole lot of blood, guts and gore spilling resulting from battles to the death and medieval practices coming into the fore.
Just what a vampire story should be.
As vampire stories go, I am a fan, a real fan. However, this is not a cheesy romantic fangstory. It is not a read where the words can set the heart to thump and make me dream of becoming a vampire snack. Truth is, this is quite a violent tale that can surprise, disappoint, break the heart, and eventually kill a whole lot of romantic vampire fangirling.
Just the way I imagined a vampiric world would be.
Then again, the eroticism in this book sort of messed up with the violent turn of events so of course, I still ended up fangirling here. And blushing. And fanningmyfacesilly.
I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this even though it was very different to the authors other published work.
It was funny and packed with action - good vampires, bad vampires, military, and dear bloody lord it was hot and down right dirty :D
I noticed a few editing / formating errors - sentences than ran into one another especially around speech, but at no point did this take away the enjoyment of the book for me.
I kinda wanted it to be a series. I felt it could/should be a series. I think the author is going to the UK meet in June so I am determined to corner him about it.
You never know what you are going to get in a Max Vos book as he writes such a variation of things. When starting this book I didn't expect vampires but that's what I got! What I liked is that the introduction to the vampires was done so well that you got into the story and didn't get bogged down by vampire lore as can happen. There is a great cast of characters and I managed to keep them straight in my head which, with me, is a miracle so they have very distinctive voices. As ever the sexy bits are absolutely steaming hot, I always get such a sense of realism with Max's writing. I also like that he doesn't hold back and this book includes a rape scene. One I thought was well written not glorifying it in any way and very integral to the story. Perhaps the victim should have felt slightly more violated but then he had some great help recovering! In fact my only complaint is that the Scottish vampire had a name so unintelligible it was like one of my cats had walked over my keyboard and I never did work out how to say it lol
I want to thank Max for his random facebook question where I won my copy of this book. I would have bought it otherwise and this in no way has effected my review :-)
There was a germ of a good idea in this book. The premise is that the U.S. Military has a secret group of vampires that take care of those enemies that just need to be killed. They are like a SEAL team with “leave everyone dead” mission. An embedded reporter is on to them and must be stopped from publishing his article. There are also couple of rogue vampires that are not following the rules and creating chaos. The idea is ruined by the clunky writing and some series editing (or lack of editing). This is a word for word example of the editing issues:
Sarge's phone rang again, as the two men were drying off. As the two men were drying off Sarge's phone rang again.
There were also places were there is no spaces between the words – threeorfourwordsinarowwithnnospaces (that was really hard to type!).
The last straw for me was a brutal attack that almost killed one of characters and the next night he is having a foursome. He is described and being bruised and swollen, he can hardly walk because of the pain, but a foursome is somehow possible.
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. I loved every line and every word of this book. The entire story was unique and stunning in its delivery. I couldn't put this book down, at first when I read the description, it only gave you a mere hint of what to expect but then you get into the story and you are blown away. It's erotic, it's loving, it's heartbreaking, and then wow. I can't say enough, for me it's one of a kind I well worth the time and money. I read this entire story in eight hours. There is nothing hotter than immortal Marines....brilliant.
Five stars for this great book. I loved the story, it was well written. The plot was great. The characters were you fall in love with them. This was not the typical Max Vos book. VAMPIRES? YES! I loved this story. I was engrossed from the first page. Good job Max. Good job.
I really enjoyed this one! There are some seriously hot and hairy vampires. There is a fair bit of downright dirty sex which is VERY graphic and the story line is unique. In everyday life vampires exist although very humans know about them. That is the way the vampires would like it to stay. Welcome to the V Unit. A group of marines who felt they could walk away from their human lives and become vampires and are now governed by a committee of vampires who have had extremely long and interesting lives. This group is so secretive not even the president is aware of them. The premise for the story is based on a power struggle amongst the elders who sit on the vampire committee. Internal struggle may well be their downfall unless they can put a stop to it. Ariston in his arrogance and madness has decided that he should be leader and his solution to this is to both kill and turn humans and bring the vampires existence to light in the human world. The V Unit is brought in to hunt down and kill the rogues but their presence is discovered by a war correspondent, Bronsan Rudan, and the operation looks like it could quickly unravel. What nobody could have counted on is Bronsans honesty and integrity or the fact that he very quickly falls for the sexy vampire Sarge. As the vampires fight to keep the rogues under control Bronsan is one of very few humans that knows of their existence, is welcomed into their lives and who actively works to keep them safe. The man proves fearless in a very scary situation and earns the respect of even the oldest and coldest of the committee. The story and the word building of this book would definitely allow for more to follow if Max wanted to make it into a series (hint). This is one of those books where you don’t only invest in the main characters. Woody is integral to the story as vampire elder and caused me to shed a tear towards the end. There is a lot of sex in this story that ranges from MM to MMM to MMMM and none of it is fluffy. It is also brutal in some parts especially towards to the end. If hot, bearish, vampire marines who are very sexual do it for you then this is certainly a book for you! If they are not, you should still read it anyway, as the story is a good one! Oh....the last chapter.....perfect!
3.5 stars rounded up. Very different offering from Max, but one I really enjoyed - I mean come on hot, hairy and muscular vampire marines! Really liked the relationship between Bronson and Sarge but also their relationship with Woody- not that they were a threesome but they had a great friendship and some really hot fun together. Max built an interesting world here, one that definitely has the potential for more stories if he felt so inspired. There were some seriously gruesome parts (more towards the end) but my God Max writes some extremely HOT sex scenes (first shower scene - fans self!!!) He's not a writer who says away from being graphic which I know has not been reviewed well in the past but I like the down and dirty of it!
Didn't enjoy this as much as some of Max' s previous books but a great read non the less. Only slight problem was the editing needed a little work, some of the sentences had words running together without gaps which I had to read twice to fully understand.
There's one subgenre in fiction I usually avoid: vampires. There's a tendency to romanticise the vamp element too much, and it's a immediate turn off for me. I don't read them; I don't write them; I don't edit them. Romance is part and parcel of the genre, but for me, that's all it should be: a part of a dirtier, grittier, more realistic wider picture.
So why pick up the V-unit then? Well, because I know I'm not going to get 'play by mainstream rules' with Max Vos, and that sits just fine with me. The V-unit is rough, brutal, from one of the boys written for the boys kind of writing. I'm not going to go into Sarge, Bronsan, even Woody and the plot line because there enough reviews to cover that. I will say... it's a gritty read, one where vampires get dirtier, grittier, and more realistic with such a brutal picture.
Usually I love this author's work, but this one really didn't work for me. There were too many story threads left hanging and Bronson's behavior was beyond annoying. And odd. And annoying. Plus,
The sex was hot, as usual, and the audio narration was good, but the story itself was not one of my favorites.
Had a serious WTF moment with the rape episode of this story. Could not wrap my brain cells around what happened after it took place. Yep, how it was handled (like nothing really bothered him about the violation. Except for a sore ass?) He just jumped right back on that 'ol horse and went on with his groove. It's fiction, I know. *walks away shaking head*
REVIEW: The V-Unit is a small group of skilled, highly trained Marines whose exisitence is known of by only a few select people. What makes these Marines unique? Try the fact that they’re vampires.
When murder victims’ bodies start showing up looking like they’ve been attacked by animals, the V-Unit is called in to stop a group of rogue vampires before the human world discovers the secret that vampies exist. Bronson Rudan, an intrepid war correspondent who’s seen more than his fair share of violence and death, accidently stumbles across a scene out of a horror movie. He witnesses what appear to be two men attacking another, but these guys have fangs! Because of this, Bronson finds himself pulled into an previously unknown world of vampires, and he finds himself attracted to First Lieutenant David “Sarge” Farragut, the hot and hunky leader of the V-Unit. He agrees to help with the rogue vampire problem, although when it’s all over with, his memories will be erased. At least, that was the plan…….
In The V-Unit, Max Vos has taken an old storyline, and given it a fresh and unique twist. This plot driven tale has complex three dimensional characters who jump off the page. Max has done a fantastic job of building a convincing, richly detailed world where vampires are more than just broody characters that sparkle. He gives us a totally believable backstory that answers any questions about where and how the characters and events led to the present day. The sex in this story is hot, hot, hot, and is steamy enough to melt your ereader! Max’s style of writing is highly original, crisp, and straight to the point, and does a fantastic job of weaving the worlds of vampires and the military into a seamlessly tight and taut tale. This story has a HEA ending that is anything but ordinary, and that I absolutely LOVED reading. If you’re looking for something sexy, exciting, and definitely different, then give this book a try.
Book hangover = The V-Unit. I enjoyed every moment of this book, no matter if I was laughing with the characters, sharing their pain or yelling at them. I turned every page with eager anticipation and was so sad to see the story come to an end. And when I made it to the end of the journey and was rudely shoved back into the real world it took me a moment to adjust to reality.
Max Vos has the ability to suck you into a story and make you feel the emotions of the characters. Vampires are not for everyone, but if you ever wanted to jump the fence and give them a try, this is a great book. No one sparkles, they drink blood and the vampires are realistic (as realistic as mythical creatures can be). The balance of good and evil is wonderful. I spent equal amounts of time while reading telling Max Vos that I wanted to punch or stake one character and how much I loved another.
Bronson and Sarge are only the start of the excellent characters. The pair together are HOT HOT HOT and their interactions are brilliant. Both Characters are strong and powerful in their own right. Together they form an amazing team. Add is Woody, who is part of the Vampire Council, and you have just a great dynamic. Did I mention the hot?
My favourite character is Hatshepsut, the ruler of the Vampire Council. She is fabulous. A wonderfully written character who touches your heart. Hatshepsut is strong and powerful and yet is compassionate and has some wonderfully touching moments. How she relates to her associates, the V-Unit and Bronson is dynamic and relatable. Hatshepsut is a true highlight.
The powerful storyline coupled with strong powerful characters makes you fall in love with every line. The end had me melting into a pile of goo. I didn’t want to leave the world I had fallen into. But you can be guaranteed that Max Vos will write another story to love and be sucked into.
REVIEW OF AUDIOBOOK; JUNE 14, 2017 Narrator: Greg Boudreaux
I rather enjoyed this despite a couple of issues: 1: too many characters and I found some difficulty connecting them to the plot or to the main characters 2: For some reason (entirely personal), I detest paranormals with a female leader. I can't help being reminded of J R Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series which featured a Virgin Mary-type figure, the Scribe Virgin blech!- one of the reasons I gave up on the series.
The rest was fine. I had no issues with the rape scene - it did get me all tense, wishing help would arrive in time. My problem with this scene was that the author did not let me in on how Bronson was rescued. One minute, his life blood is draining away and everything goes black for him; the scene changes to somewhere else, other characters, then suddenly we are back with Bronson coming out of consciousness, attended to by Sarge and Woody. Then another scene change and we are back with Bronson, Sarge and Woody whilst Burrows, the rapist, is tied up and about to be charged with rape. IMO, there was sufficient time for Bronson to heal before Sarge is sticking it to him so I do not have the complaint one of the reviewers had about there being sex just after Bronson had been raped. Several days and several scene changes took place before the vampire Marines are swinging their big dicks around.
I liked that there was some plot and not just sex. On the contrary, there was less sex than I was expecting and the sex scenes were as mechanical and unemotional as some reviews led me to believe. Overall, I liked this and plan to buy the next installment if there's going to be one.
Not my cup of tea at all. I really didn't enjoy the reading of this book. There were some interesting ideas in the concept, but then it became a let down from there. This is full on erotica with absolutely no real substance behind the reasoning of why everyone is willing to get it on in public with any partner that's available.
I liked the idea of the plot better than what actually happened. A secret elite vampire unit within the US military, ok. Created by incredibly ancient vampires from all different areas of the world in conjunction with the very few government/military peeps in the know, ok. But the actual plot of what's going on makes little to no sense. Reasonings are skewed and the mix of military plot versus vampire machinations don't blend well together.
My favorite character of the whole book is easily Bronson. He's the only one that seemed worthwhile, but then that had to go and be ruined by his reactions to being attacked. I was really bothered by this. I enjoyed his character as the war correspondent, catching things others wouldn't, putting together a plan to spin things. But then when things go wrong, it's shrugged off as if it was nothing. No human would have walked through what he did and not be traumatized.
Nothing about this book worked for me. It had brief moments, or ideas, that I liked, but I struggled to get through every page.
This was my first book by this author and it took me a bit to find my rhythm with his writing style. The way the dialogue was written at times made it difficult to keep up with who was saying what. I enjoyed the story, but at the same time I wasn't necessarily engaged with the characters. I never really cared about them beyond their involvement in moving the story along. There wasn't anything I could grab onto and feel. Although this book had "relationship" in it, the relationship didn't drive the book. I agree with what another reviewer said about the
A very different book for Max Vos but WOW! It's a definite must read. Marines & Vampires together? I have to admit I didn't expect to enjoy as much as I did. But now I'm hoping he continues with this storyline. (Right after he finishes writing the sequel to My Hero. (You listening Max???) The characters in the book are rough and ready Marines (maybe that should be randy and ready) coupled with vampires and an overly curious reporter. All in defense of an ancient vampire civilization. Full of plot twist and turns, action and rough and tumble sex. It will NOT disappoint. It is a stand alone story. Something Max has worked on for a while. A true departure from his other writings but equally enjoyable.
I won a copy of Max Vos’s The V Unit. I requested it because I’ve served in the military and the conceit of an all-vampire unit of Marines really caught my fancy. Vos did not disappoint at all, as the book was very entertaining, especially the characters named after historical Marine commandants from the distant past and other figures from history, such as Hatshepsut. The novel was more erotic than my normal fare, but it all advanced the story, so I enjoyed it. I did not figure out the mystery, which is always a plus for me. While the book resolved all the issues facing the V Unit, there was room for more stories to be told about the characters. I, for one, would love to see another novel set in this very intriguing world!
This story had me engrossed from page one and I loved it! I admit, at times it was pretty hard to read but at the same time, absolutely fascinating. Of course as Max it the master of incredible sex scenes, he did not disappoint, very hot and steamy! Intriguing characters that I came to really care about and an interesting story that kept me hooked until I finished it. Great job Max!
A group of US Marines turned into Vampires to go on secret missions in Afghanistan are needed in the US to help find a rogue element of the Vampire community who are making dangerous fledgling Vamps. Great MMMM vampire sex and a pretty good story to go with it.
