Marrying him was supposed to be business… not pleasure.
Liam “Dex” Dexter, the world’s hottest surfer, needs American citizenship to qualify for the Olympics. Britta needs enough cash to leave her small-town life behind and finally open her dream coffee shop in LA. Their plan is get married, fake the happily-ever-after, and go their separate ways once their goals are met.
There’s just one tiny problem.
Living together — and sharing a bed — makes it impossible to ignore the sparks between them. The more time they spend pretending, the harder it is to remember that this is just a business arrangement.
But when their carefully crafted deal threatens to become something real, Britta and Dex will have to decide if their dreams are worth more than the unexpected passion pulling them together.
Britta & the Beach Boy is a swoony, slow-burn marriage-of-convenience romantic comedy with laugh-out-loud moments, hot Australian surfers, and just the right amount of heart. While it’s the first book in the Love in LA series, Britta and her family make their debut in the Love in Paradise Valley series. Each book stands alone, but trust me… you’ll want to read them all.
Brittany Larsen is the author of fourteen full-length and three novella-length sweet romantic comedies, plus a couple more historical romance novellas set in the Old West. Brittany’s stories range across time and place, but they’re always about one thing: connection. They’re guaranteed to make you laugh and maybe even tear up a little.
Born and raised in Idaho, Brittany has spent the past twenty years (maybe more) living the California dream… If that dream includes wearing sweatpants all day and gorging herself on red Australian licorice–Australia’s second-best export (Chris Hemsworth being the obvious first). When not writing, she teaches hot yoga, walks her dog, and takes naps. Her sweater-sporting, mini Aussi-doodle, Bo, is her favorite writing companion. But her favorite people are her husband and three daughters.
What a great marriage of convenience rom-com! I really enjoyed this one. We have layered characters, a couple who communicates and a story all about chasing your dreams. This was my first Brittany Larsen book but will not be my last! I am looking forward to more rom-coms by her. In this story, Britta is looking for something more in her life. We see her go from her small town, coffee shop life to Los Angeles, where she meets Dex, a famous Australian professional surfer. They hit it right off but circumstances find themselves tied into a marriage of convenience trope.
Dex needs American citizenship to compete in the 2028 Olympics and Britta could really use the money he's offered for her coffee shop to continue the legacy her mother left behind. What they both don't expect? Catching the inevitable feelings that come with a fake marriage. :)
I loved this story and how layered it was with our characters. Britta is still struggling with the grief from her mother passing away too soon, so she is trying to figure out what she should do next in life. Dex is right there with her along the way with her. They just have a chemistry from the moment they met.
My favorite part of this book was every time they were together and all the little moment's they were getting to know each other. This book is all about taking a chance, following your dreams and making sacrifices.
Looking forward to reading more from Brittany! If you like books with a cute romance, the marriage of convenience trope, coffee and surfer vibes and family elements, check this out! Romance was clean with kisses only.
Thank you to the author for providing a copy to honestly read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
After the Love in Paradise Valley series ended I was so sad that we weren't getting a Britta book. So when Brittany started asking for ARC readers for this book there was no doubt that I was going to sign up for it and I'm so glad I did! Just like with Brittany's other books, I experienced all the emotions while reading through this book. I loved all of the obstacles that Britta and Dex had to face together and it created such a beautiful story. I can't wait for the rest of the books in the Love in LA series!
Genre: romcom Content: makeouts, some mentions of sex, loss of a parent (in the past), grief (present), work-related accident
Admittedly, I’ve only read Enemies in Paradise from that series that introduces Britta’s family to us…but that didn’t stop me at all from enjoying this book! It was so good!
Britta and Dex are attracted to each other from their very first meeting. Months later when they reconnect, that spark is still present. Because of the obvious attraction, this felt different than other marriage of convenience books I’ve read. I really loved that fresh take!
Britta’s grief over losing her mom and also over the sacrifices she made to take care of her mom while she was ill are a big part of the story. As someone who has taken care of a sick mom and is dealing with her loss, I really felt kinship with Britta. I loved seeing her discover what she really wanted for herself and watching her go after it.
Dex and Britta made me happy! This one is actually available now!
Favorite Quotes: 🫶 I won't let fears about my future get in the way of enjoying my now.
❤️ "Honey, home isn't a place. It's the people you love.”
🤝"But if you're okay with it, I'll hold your hand the whole time. I won't let anything happen to you. If you'll trust me right now— the way I trusted you on that wave—I'll keep you safe."
‼️ "I guarantee there will be days when it's too much and that you will change your mind every time you have an especially difficult day. That's what it is to be married. You recommit every day, through every big problem and minor inconvenience that comes your way."
😍 That's when we both knew this wasn't a marriage-of-convenience any-more. Ours was a marriage-for-forever, inconveniences and all.
*I received a complimentary copy from the author. All opinions are my own. No positive review was required.
The first thing I have to say is... DO NOT READ THE BLURB! Unless you don't mind being spoiled. Most things in the blurb don't take place until half way through the book and then some until more than 90 percent through it! I don't usually read blurbs, but somehow I accidentally glanced at this one when I was 20 percent in and couldn't believe it. Now that being said...
This is a great book! (Especially if you don't know what's going to happen!)
This is the first book in a new series that is a spin off of the Love in Paradise Valley series. While it is fun to know the history Britta has and who her family is, those things aren't necessary to enjoy this book.
There are some heavy topics discussed, especially dealing with grief from losing a parent. But that is balanced well with more light hearted moments and tender story lines.
I am really going to need a audiobook of this one though! I need Dex's Australian accent. The surfing details were interesting to this complete surfing novice.
I really did enjoy this book and am appreciative to the author for the opportunity to read an advanced copy. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
“If you’d told me a year ago, I’d fall stupid in love within a matter of minutes, I would have laughed hysterically. Falling in love is not on my to-do list. Or my bullet list. Definitely not on my shopping list. But here I am, picking up a value-size, heart-shaped pack of love. There’s no use denying it. I am utterly, hopelessly in love with…surfing.”
I loved this book! It made me laugh and cry and there’s just something about a story that takes place in a beach town that usually just makes me happy. (Although I’d be happier reading it on a beach, but I’m not even remotely close to one.) Even though this is the first book in a new series, Britta is also in the Love in Paradise Valley series, and some of the characters from that series show up in this one, and it was fun to see them again. I had a hard time putting this book down once I started it. It’s a really fun marriage of convenience story! And I know the old saying about not judging a book by its cover, but this cover is just so pretty! 😍
This is an entirely uniquely done marriage of convenience story between an Australian pro surfer and small town coffee shop owner. The ending really brought it home for me with this one.
This is the first book that I have read by this author and I absolutely devoured this story! The author really made me feel like I was there experiencing being new to California and the beach and surf culture. Britta & the Beach Boy was a sweet and clean read with lots of great, swoony moments between Britta and Dex. But it also had deeper things that the characters were dealing with or had experienced, too, such as grief from the loss of a parent to Alzheimer’s, a somewhat stressed relationship between Dex and his father, trying to define the difference between simple attraction and true love, and plenty more.
These characters just came alive for me and I am really looking forward to when new books are added to this series. I also plan to go back and read the books about Britta’s brothers from a different series some time. I loved this story so much from start to finish. It pulled my heart all over the place in the best of ways. I also loved that the book includes an epilogue and then there is also a bonus epilogue that you can get separately.
Summing it up: Britta takes a vacay in LA and sees Dex again. She thinks he’s a flirty surf bum. Dex is a surfer from Australia. Australia. Australia. Australia. That’s how I’m summing him up.
This book is like walking along the shore looking for shells and discovering little treasures. I’m a beach loving shell collecting girl so this story was my jam. My thoughts are still reeling and my heart a little raw, but I’ll try to make this spoiler free.
Lovely Randomness: 🌊 surfing was described perfectly 🌊 seeing Britta’s family was so fun 🌊 Dex’s Australianisms was 🫠 🌊 my heart cracked for their trials 🌊 the rules and the green dress 🌊 his friends need their story told 🌊 surf lessons 🔥 🌊 the sweet everyday moments 🌊 you’ll need tissues 🌊 you MUST have the bonus epilogue on hand
Britta and Dex are a great example of truly loving someone and wanting them to achieve their own dreams. When the perfect wave doesn’t always happen can Dex and Britta stay on the same team?
It’s always sad when a book series you love so much comes to an end. It was hard to leave Paradise Valley, but Brittany did a great job of starting a new adventure that perfectly tied into her other books. You’ll find this story is a perfect reminder to go after your dreams.
Britta is craving something different for her life. Leaving her quaint small town in Idaho behind, Britta finds herself in Los Angeles. What’s supposed to be a temporary stay turns into so much more when an unexpected marriage proposal (of convenience) from superstar surfer Dex, sends her life in a direction she could have never dreamed of. Britta is torn between staying in L.A. and accepting his proposal or returning to Idaho to the only life and family she’s ever known. You see, this marriage proposal carries multiple benefits. Dex is an Australian surfer, but his only shot at the 2028 Olympics is if he gains American citizenship…hence wanting to put a ring on it. Lol For Britta, Dex’s money could really help fuel her dream of owning an L.A. coffee shop to carry on the legacy she’s left back at home. Sounds complicated, right? Kind of is, and it’s a whole lot of fun when Dex and Britta start to discover they really are quite compatible.
I appreciated how loving and respectful Dex was. It was also great to see how Britta’s family all played a part in this story. Funny how entertaining marriage of convenience tropes can be in RomComs, yet not exactly something I’d advise in real life. LOL Ahhhh the joys of fiction. So much fun! 😉 You’re going to love this one if beachy Los Angeles vibes are your style.
*Small mentions of grief following the loss of a parent. References to sex, but nothing on page.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Britta and the Beach Boy is the first book in the Love in LA series, but Britta and her family were first introduced in the Love in Paradise Valley series. This can be enjoyed just fine as a standalone if you have not read that series.
This was such a wonderful story! Right from the start, Britta and Dex drew me in with their easy chemistry and banter. When Britta heads to LA for what was supposed to be a short-term trip, she learns that there is so much more to Dex and the world of professional surfing than she first thought from their initial interactions. I didn't know a whole lot about this world myself, but this book definitely drew me into it and kept me captivated. When Dex realizes he can potentially make his Olympic dreams come true as an American citizen... and Britta finds herself needing some extra funds to purchase an LA coffee shop, a business marriage of convenience seemed like an ideal solution for both. This story absolutely surprised me. I can't go into details without giving it away, but there was definitely a turn that I absolutely did not see coming that really took this story to the next level. While it had plenty of laugh out loud moments, it also had me reaching for the tissues on more than one occasion and I loved every minute of it. I cannot wait to see what happens next in the series!
Britta and the Beach Boy is a closed-door romance with kisses only.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.
I love the Thomsen family and their stories in Paradise, so I was so excited to read Britta’s story and I loved it!
Britta and Dex have instant chemistry when they met at Britta’s and then see each other again in California! Add in a marriage of convenience that benefits both of them and there are sparks flying everywhere!
I loved Dex and his and Australian lingo, his surfing career, and his flirtatious personality! He was such a sweetheart to Britta!
Britta was her cute self and I was so happy to see her find some happiness after devoting her life to caring for her mom and then losing her.
I loved seeing the Thomsen brothers and dad again, too!
Well this book didn't end like I thought it would. I mean, yes, but no. Let's just say I had a surprise.
All that aside, who doesn't love a good marriage of convenience story? Forced proximity? A new series that's a spin-off from an old one? AND! If you're like me, you get to think in an Australian accent! Not that I would ever try to actually speak that way, but I sure had fun thinking it!
I loved watching Dex and Britta learn to open up to each other. How they worked their respective issues out with one another. How they learned to trust each other.
I just really enjoyed this book, and look forward to seeing what comes next.
Audiobook update: The narrators, Corinne Davies and Antony Davis, were really good, and it's great to hear Dex's Aussie accent!
Original review: "Home isn't a place. It's the people you love."
I've been wanting Britta's story for awhile. It's not the story I imagined, but that's not a bad thing. Britta's in Los Angeles, far from Paradise, Idaho, taking a much needed break after her mom's death while her coffee shop in Paradise is being renovated. Of course, Britta finds a great coffee shop and falls in love with it. When the shop owner needs to sell, Britta wants to buy it but doesn't have the money.
Dex (aka Liam), the Aussie pro surfer Britta met during the summer in Paradise, is in LA for a big competition when qualifying for the Olympics is discussed. There's one little problem--his best chance of getting to the Olympics is to surf for America, and he needs to be a citizen. Could a marriage of convenience help each of them achieve their dream? Could the answer be that simple?
The answer is no, it isn't that simple. These two have undeniable chemistry and even their "rules" can't keep it in check for long. I loved the banter between them and their growing affection feels authentic and not rushed. The forced proximity and “fake it until you make it” charade they have to maintain in public adds layers of comedic and romantic tension. I knew it wouldn't be long before this marriage of convenience became real. I loved the dual POV, the rules, Dex teaching Britta how to surf, and that this is the start of a new series! I was also surprised by some plot twists I did not anticipate.
The author does a wonderful job balancing the lighthearted premise (marriage of convenience) with deeper themes of ambition, sacrifice, and self-discovery. Britta’s dream of owning a coffee shop and leaving her small town contrast with Dex’s Olympic aspirations, but we can see how their individual goals challenge and complement one another. This is a story full of humor, swoon-worthy chemistry, and emotional depth. I can't wait to read the next book!
I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions in this book are my own.
The instant chemistry between Britta and Dex is so fun! I loved their flirty banter and connection. Seriously so swoonworthy. Especially the mutual pining after deciding they couldn’t fall in love after getting married. This book left me feeling so emotional at the end.
Things I loved about this book: -all the surfing terms and science behind it! -Britta’s entire family. ❤️😂 -Archie, Stella, Rhys were great! -the first kiss is in the first chapter! -how much Britta and Dex truly respected each other.
Favorite quotes: It’s hard to say. But I sort of like the idea that our marriage-of-convenience is the leavening agent that’s set everything in motion. With a little kneading and baking, Dex and I might just create something delicious.
Archie shakes his head while walking to our apartment. But he doesn’t say no. Wouldn’t matter if he did. He knows he can’t keep me away from Britta Thomsen if I decide I want to pursue something with her—whatever that might be. He’s my mate and my coach, but he’s not my keeper. He also knows I’m not letting anything get in the way of winning the world title in a few days. Not even the woman I haven’t stopped thinking about since the day I met her.
“You told me to make it a dance. That’s what kept me from panicking while I was waiting for the right wave.” Dex’s words are slow, calm, and confident. “That’s why I won that heat. Your words.” My breathing slows. The pounding in my ears quiets. “If you don’t want to get married here, we won’t,” he continues. “But if you’re okay with it, I’ll hold your hand the whole time. I won’t let anything happen to you. If you’ll trust me right now—the way I trusted you on that wave—I’ll keep you safe.” Dex’s words flow over me, a soft breeze in the blazing heat, and my body cools. “Let’s get married,” I say and put my shaking hand in his.
I fell deeply in love with the Love in Paradise Valley series and now their sister, Britta, gets her own story in the new Love in LA series. This one was everything that I hoped and dreamed it would be from the hints given and surprise, surprise–I can’t wait for more!
I love going into a book blind and I wasn’t expecting to find some delicious tropes in this one. Not only does it take place on and near a beach, but Dex is an Australian surfer celebrity and needs to get married in order to compete at the next level. Cue a marriage of convenience, including one bed. Britta is trying to follow her own dreams and the undeniable attraction these two share is off-the-charts swoony.
The coffee shop vibes, intriguing surfing world, simmering chemistry, cozy family connections, and lush accent (yes, I listened to it and while it took a second to find my groove, I adored hearing Dex) all compiled a beautiful story that won my heart over.
While I laughed many times, I also felt pricks of tenderness. There are some hard things to navigate in this one. From the darling cover to the sweet story within, this is a story worth reading. I borrowed this on Spotify Premium.
Content: moments of peril/injury; off-page past death of parent; mild+ romance/light innuendo
First of all, a mighty big thank you to the author for the ARC copy of Britta & The Beach Boy. This was the exact kind of book I needed to read–a perfect palette cleanser after some intense thrillers.
If you’re on the hunt for a feel-good romance with a touch of the unexpected, Britta and the Beach Boy might just be the book you’re looking for. Brittany Larsen brings together a super charming, sun-soaked story with characters who are genuinely easy to root for.
From the get-go, Britta is a standout character. She’s got this delightful blend of sass and selflessness, always ready to help others while also being unapologetically direct. You can’t help but root for her as she navigates the complexities of her life. Dex, on the other hand, is the quintessential charming surfer. His light-hearted nature is refreshing, but there’s also an insightful side that adds depth to his character.
One of the things I absolutely loved was the way Brittany does a beautiful job acknowledging their pain and frustration without letting the story become overly heavy. Instead, she incorporates these themes with sensitivity, making the characters’ journeys feel more grounded and genuine. Britta and Dex’s individual growth becomes as central as their romance, with their shared vulnerabilities and support for each other adding warmth to their relationship. The story doesn’t gloss over their hardships, but it never loses its lighthearted, hopeful tone, either.
I went into the book expecting a light-hearted rom-com, and while it certainly delivers on that front with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, there’s a twist that completely caught me off guard. I can’t reveal too much without spoiling the fun, but let’s just say it adds a depth to the story that I didn’t see coming and elevates the entire narrative.
Overall, Brittany Larsen weaves a romance that’s both sweet and relatable. Britta & The Beach Boy is not just about flirty banter and surfside charm; it’s also about the resilience needed to heal from loss, chase big dreams, and open up to love. I would definitely recommend this one to everyone looking for romance with substance and just the right touch of emotional complexity.
I adore Dex. He’s flirty, he’s funny, he’s sweet, and he’s got an accent. 😍
He lives to surf, but he may not get to much longer. Unless he marries an American. I love how this marriage of convenience story played out. Britta and Dex already have the connection and they both will get what they want out of the arrangement. Neither want feelings involved, but news flash to them, they’re already involved and that is what made this story so fun and yummy.
My favorite part was just watching Dex and Britta grow closer, their feelings deepening, connecting emotionally. Seeing them become the most important things in one another’s life.
I enjoyed seeing the Thomsen family again. They’re such a loving and supportive family. Going through such an emotional time right now.
There were two minor things that personally caught my attention because they represented subtle political leanings.
An unexpectedly emotional ending that hit me in the feels topped off this adventure. I wasn’t prepared. I’m so glad there’s an epilogue!
Thank you to Brittany Larsen for the copy. All opinions are my own.
Do you love marriage of convenience? I do! There’s something so delicious about the particular flavor of forced proximity it creates. Britta and Dex have an instant connection but their personal lives are a big road block for pursuing anything. She’s dealing with the grief of her mom’s death and the pressure to help her family hold onto a second generation coffee shop. He’s chasing the next big surfing competition to prove he’s not the screw up he once was. She’s only in Cali short term. Romance isn’t really on the table. Even if it’s clear attraction is mutual.
But when events unfold a marriage of convenience might be what they both need to reach for their dreams! Which leads to those oh so fun (and breakable) rules… and from there you will be squealing and kicking your feet. I mean there’s nothing like not being allowed to kiss the person you are falling for to make you realize YOU ARE ACTUALLY IN LOVE!! 🫠🫠
This was such a cute book! And the best part is it’s the first of a new series. I’m already hoping a certain couple is next!
Heat- delicious kisses only CW- death of a parent prior to the story
This book was definitely not your typical structure.
I enjoyed the setup with Britta meeting Dex and learning more about surfing. Larsen's humour shines through in lines like 'I'm not really the rah-rah-sit-on-the-beach-and-cheer-for-a-guy kind of girl.'
"We can hang out," Dex says casually, but there's a dare in the way he traces his tongue along his bottom lip. Like he's throwing me a crumb to see if I'll go for the whole sandwich.
I do love a good sandwich.
Britta's grief for her mum was well drawn and I cared about her cafe, her dreams, and where she was headed.
At the midpoint, they decide to go down the marriage of convenience route. Britta telling her cousin is gold:
"He Proposaled you? Like in that movie with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds and the eagle that snatched the dog?"
I reluctantly nod. I should never have let her watch that movie when we were younger.
The second half of the book threw a couple of curve balls and the ending was a double-take WHAT??? for me. So without giving spoilers, I'll just say that I felt it was a bit rushed, whereas the first section was long and perhaps the marriage should have happened sooner.
But I was there for the journey and I thought Britta was a great character.
Britta and the Beach Boy is the perfect blend of heartwarming romance, lighthearted humor, and a beach setting that sweeps you off your feet. This story had me laughing, tearing up, and daydreaming of sandy shores all at once.
The plot revolves around Britta, a small-town barista with a down-to-earth personality, and Dex, an Australian pro-surfer with a carefree spirit. The chemistry between them is undeniable, and their romance is full of “aww” moments and emotional depth. From their chance encounter to a spontaneous Vegas wedding, it’s the perfect recipe for a rom-com. One of the highlights of this book is how it captures that quintessential beachy vibe. There’s something so comforting and nostalgic about a romance that unfolds by the ocean, and even though I wasn’t reading it on a beach (I wish!), it definitely made me feel like I was there.
And can we talk about the cover? Absolutely gorgeous! The bright, inviting colors and the laid-back vibe of the artwork match the tone of the book so well. It’s the kind of cover that makes you want to drop everything and dive in.
Overall, Britta and the Beach Boy is a sweet, feel-good romance that has everything you need for a perfect weekend read: love, laughter, and the magic of an unexpected connection. If you’re looking for a rom-com with a heart and soul, this book is a must-read!
🩷 Closed door romance 🌊 Fish out of water 🏄 Surfer boy 🩷 Marriage of convenience 🌊 Small town in a big city 🏄 Protective MMC 🩷 One bed
Quote: “With the taste of Britta’s lips still on mine, I feel the same disconcerting sensation of being pummeled by a wave. There’s no up or down. Nothing else exists outside the pounding in my chest and my lungs grasping for air… But wiping out has never felt this good.”
Thank you to the author Brittany Larsen and NetGalley for the electronic and physical copy of the book.
This is the first book in the Love in LA series but is a spin off from Love in Paradise series. Britta is part of a big family in Paradise Idaho she recently lost her mom to Alzheimer’s. Her family convinces her to take a vacation to LA. There she realizes the cute guy (Dex) who stopped by her coffee shop in Paradise lives next door. Britta also discovers he’s a world famous surfer. There is definite pull between these two but Britta doesn’t plan on staying. Until renovation issues pop up with the coffee shop back home and opportunity opens up in LA to take over a coffee shop. The only problem is how is she going to pay for it. Dex wants to go to the Olympics for surfing. Except his only shot is with America and he is Australian. They both have dreams and broker a deal to help each other out. A marriage of convenience! Will these two be able to pretend when they really have feelings that Britta put in a contract they can’t act on. I just loved this book- I read all the Love in Paradise books and was hoping Britta would get a book of her own. I love that Britta wanted to work on finding herself first after giving up everything to care for her mother. Britta is such a strong character and Dex complements her so well. They challenge each other and their chemistry just draws you in as a reader. I can’t wait for the next book!
4⭐️ ARC Review: A marriage of convenience again? You’d think I would be sick of these by now but nope! I’ve read a ton of marriage of convenience books where the plot is trying to get citizenship for dumb reasons. But this one felt realistic to me.
To sum it all up, it was just very sweet. The characters were sweet, the story was sweet, the romance was sweet, the coffee was sweet, all of it. Britta and Dex were mature in their communication, which is so refreshing. (Chapter 27? Yes we love grown intimate conversations!) Sometimes romances fall into the opposite. I despise immaturity and miscommunication. But there was none of that here!
I will say, there were some unnecessary conversations and stuff thrown in there that dragged the story a bit. But I don’t think it distracted from the goodness of this story.
*Thank you to the author, Brittany Larsen, for the complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

3.5 stars (UPDATED to 4 stars, see UPDATE at bottom)
I was ready to give this book a solid 4 stars until I got to the end, and then I found myself . . . disappointed. This book very much appeared to be a fluffy cotton candy book, which is exactly what I was in the mood for. (Btw, the only reason this took so long is because I was co-reading a book with my husband at the same time, so I had to split my time.) And, for the most part, it was a cute, fun, lighthearted book with a side of difficult personal history for each main character. But then a couple chapters before the end, it was like being viciously pummeled against rocks by a massive wave. I had hoped for a more definitive happy ending, but what I was given was more of a glimpse of the shore and a hope that I might make it there someday. I don't mind having a wrench thrown into the plot, but I do want a concrete HEA.
I liked both Britta (26) and Dex (29), but I couldn't help being irritated by the two of them. Choosing to enter into a marriage with someone you obviously like and are attracted to while also insisting that it must remain strictly a no-attachments business deal despite the potential for a real marriage . . . Well, I can't help viewing that as just plain stupid. I understand their intentions (for Dex to get citizenship, for Britta to have money to buy Annie's, and to prevent them from being distracted by others), but they were delusional for thinking that it would be less distracting than actually being married for real. So there's that. But I get that there needed to be some kind of obstacle to cause angst and prevent them from fully developing their relationship early on. Still, it bothered me. That and their constant back and forth about following all of Britta's rules.
Despite my complaints, I really did enjoy reading it. Britta's and Dex's voices were distinct enough that I could tell whose chapter it was even if I started in the middle of it. I loved the supportiveness of Britta's family, as well as the protectiveness of her brothers Adam and Bear. Even though I was frustrated that Britta and Dex thought the best way forward was to prevent themselves from having a real relationship, I did appreciate their care for each other and decision not to jump in physically just because they were legally married and attracted to each other.
Will I pick up another book by this author? Perhaps. It's nice to find closed-door romances.
How it ends:
Note: Maybe a little innuendo.
UPDATE:
At the end of my copy of this book, the author offered a bonus epilogue through BookFunnel/email. Let me say that reading it is an absolute must and made all the difference in my opinion. It took me from a somewhat sad feeling of "I hope things are eventually okay" to "Yes, I'm happy with how this ended." Finally. My question is this: Why on earth did someone decide not to include that bonus epilogue as a second epilogue in the actual book? That was a poor decision, and it should be reconsidered immediately. Bonus scenes are fantastic and fun, but this "bonus" is a vital part of the story itself. And I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially after what I was left with. (For the recored, it wasn't a bad ending--but it wasn't satisfying, either.) So yes, if you read this book, click the link and read the bonus epilogue.
"I want Britta forever, but I promised her I wouldn't fall in love. I'm in so much trouble." . That was literally so precious!! 🥹 This might just end up being one of my favorite books from this year! It deals with complex topics while remaining lighthearted and sweet.
🩷 Here are my favorite things about this book: - This book showed so beautifully how love isn't just a feeling, it's an action. It showed the magical and the messy side of love. - It was so fun getting to learn about surfing! - The characters were all so relatable and sweet. - The writing was so engaging and easy to read! - There were so many sweet and swoon-worthy moments in the book. - I loved how it showed the complexity of emotions when caring for a sick loved one! . 🚨 Content and Trigger Warnings: Alzheimers and caring for sick relatives Kissing/making out (semi-detailed) A fade-to-black scene between a married couple
This ….. Brittany Larsen , I applaud you. I went through every emotion possible with this brilliant book. I knew at my very first look , it was going to be intense as well as comedic and had the sense that I’d need tissues as the oh so real issues in this book are revealed. Gave me the real deal feel and that’s for sure and I’d actually been there before! And knew the score. Loved it and knew what I was in for. Still I wanted to read more , you deserve my praise as you reminded me how I lived and survived those days that you mention . You showed the real subject of living with Alzheimer’s and caring for someone with the unrelenting illness, both honestly and emotionally and true to life strife. As you navigate everything else that happens in life. Including having a chuckle and a bit of a laugh. Even acting a little bit daft when you’re in love , and what it means , and it does silly things and turns you into silly beans. Awesome and true to life, everything that you write has a good subject base that you absolutely run with and cause delight and force us to about face and stop and ponder , what others maybe living with even in the big blue yonder. Which brings me onto the Surf dude Dex and the Barista Britta who doubts what he’s all about. Dex is at the height of his profession, and so devout . Britta didn’t appreciate all it takes and thought he was avoiding a real job and fakes . But no my dear , far from him being a slob , it is indeed a hard money earner work.Just because he enjoys being at Rip Tide doesn’t mean he does it to hide or to shirk from a real profession. The great wide world that has them both vying and trying to get along isn’t all sunshine and song. They learn how to get along and make a strange pact from whence there’s no turning back. Amid their fears and a few tears they navigate pitfalls and ons and offs. It’s their relationship but are they or aren’t they in love? Well that’s a true test of navigational aiding because they don’t know if they’re doing it or abstaining… A comedy of errors , it certainly is . How they going to do the funny business without any … you know , funny business . It’s all kisses and misses and Mr and Mrs? …. Archie is his right hand man and helps out all he can but he can’t help in the ways of love but lays the law down enough! It’s for his own good and his professional life but it doesn’t stop him from getting along with his wife. Fake or otherwise… She is sold and feels so bold , until she lets daft feelings take ahold…confused? So were they but in a good way mainly even though sometimes Dex was as ungainly as her brothers . His heart was hers and no other’s…In the promise of good writing that’s always inviting. Showing us heartbreak and happiness, love and joy . And a bit of oh boy and laughter thereafter. Brittany Larsen does employ , every single weapon of words and actions and deeds and gives us such brilliant stories we didn’t even know we’d need. Loved this book so much and written with the personal touch and passion and heart . Enjoyed every page from the very start to the perfect Epilogue after the end. On this great comedic romance author you can depend . Attraction✔️ Love✔️ Comic timing✔️ Illness trigger✔️ Marriage of Convenience✔️ Life Goals ✔️ Family Ties ✔️ Surf Frothing ✔️ Barista Frothy Coffees✔️
Brittany has excelled herself with this story, we've come to expect a great read but this story is so much more. After finishing the Paradise Valley series I didn't think it could get any better but this book proves me wrong. Britta leaves her small hometown to move to Los Angeles hoping to find something more to help fund her idea of opening her own coffee shop. But things take a different turn when she meets Dex and he makes her an offer that seems to good to be true. There's one draw back and that is she needs to marry him. So starts the hilarious events that take place. Does she risk everything and marry or go back to her hometown and the family she knows. As always the story keeps you glued to the chair and even keeps you up just to finish one more ok maybe three or four more chapters. 😉
I mean, you had me at Australian surfer 😉😂 The meet cute grabbed me right from the start, and I couldn’t wait to see where the story led. And all I can say is, you will not see if this stuff coming, and you will definitely enjoy where this story leads.
I know some people don’t love marriage of convenience, ( I am not one of those people haha I love it) but I really think that everyone will enjoy this story. Both characters have their fair share of trials and show growth throughout the book. Watching them work through their individual things as a team was great.
When friendship with attraction leads to a fulfilling and loving marriage, you know you’re in for a treat. 🙈
Thanks to the author for an advance copy. All opinions are my own.
Staying up way past my bedtime to get in one more chapter of Dex and Britta’s story indicated this was a well written HEA sweet story. Dex and Britta characters had substance, learning about themselves and each other.
This wasn’t a skim through story for me, it was an actual lesson on some of the nuances of professional surfing. There is a mindset these athletes must possess to make it in the sport, and for those who are part of their support system. Throw in a relationship built on a business arrangement and it made for an interesting read.
I loved this story and hope to read more about some of the supporting characters finding their HEA too!
