Skylar Stone hates me. It’s just harder to tell now that I’m paying her to pretend she doesn’t.
Being a motocross legend with a pretty face has earned me some of the most lucrative modeling contracts around. So, when my ex’s sex tape scandal puts my endorsement deals in jeopardy I’ll do just about anything to save my reputation – including hiring my teammate’s uppity older sister to be my fake girlfriend. It’s the perfect solution. She gets the cash she needs for her son, and I get to keep my modeling career on the upswing.
But riding 450s on a muddy track is easier than dating this woman. Photo ops and late nights turn into blurred lines, and before I know it there’s more at risk than just my financial future. A lot more.
When the deal we struck goes way off course, the only way to protect our hearts, is to play it down and dirty.
Down & Dirty is the first in a series of stand alone small town romances.
My ARC was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This was a great debut novel and was able to connect with the main characters immediately and stay hooked. Excited to read the next in the series.
(4.5 stars) Women love Cory Ellis. Motocross legend who is a model on the side. A seemingly endless stream of beautiful Hollywood stars on his arm. The only woman who he can’t impress is Skylar Stone, his teammate’s sister. But when Cory’s ex gets in some hot water that threatens to take him down too at the same time Skylar needs cash because her ex refuses to pay their son’s health insurance any longer, they realize they might be able to help each other out. She’s pose as his atypically normal girlfriend and he’ll pay her enough to offset her expenses. A six month image management endeavor. But the simple plan veers way off course and people may be catching feelings.
If you love sports romances, spicy small-town romances, the fake relationship trope and/or single parent characters, you are going to eat this one up. It is full of banter, tension, longing glances, emotional growth. I enjoyed that there’s a lot of third act conflict, but it comes from a place of real emotions and realistic responses to fears. There’s also a great undercurrent of different expectations for men and women, how much women back-burner their own dreams for family, and the introspection to decide what’s really important.
This is the first book in Holden Cove series and I’ll 100% be there for every book.
"But then she smiled. And she was fucking stunning."
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I read this in anticipation of reading the ARC for Slash & Burn, and let me tell you - I'm glad I did.
I loved how fierce and independent Skylar is. She's loyal to a fault; and I adored that about her. Seeing Cory open himself up when around Sky was beautiful, and seeing him immediately care about Micah and his wellbeing, too, was heartwarming and so wholesome.
I felt like this put a bit of a twist on the usual formula found in a fake dating sports romance; and it was truly refreshing. I ate up every second of it!
The epilogue had me giddy and jumping up and down. I love when a book can give me that.
I enjoyed being in a new (to me) sports world. I don't know much about motocross but I didn't feel overwhelmed or lost at any point in the book. You can tell that Maddy did enough research and knew enough about the sport for the reader to be sucked in and feel like they were on the track with Cory.
As for Cory and Skylar, I absolutely LOVE them and their relationship. Skylar is always taking care of those around her, her son Micah, her brother Ronnie, doing what her parents ask of her for Ronnie's career, bending to the whims of an ex and new fiancé. No one takes the time to stop and ask her what she wants or needs. She has had to put aside her wants and dreams for everyone else. Enter Cory Ellis with an opportune deal. If Skylar fake dates him, he'll pay her. He would pay her enough that she could help cover medical costs for Micah (since her ex needs to pay for his new wedding🙄), not have to dip into her savings or ask her dad or Ronnie for more money, and could save up enough to go back to school and finally earn her degree. Since she's not his biggest fan they both think this is the best deal since neither of them will develop feelings (readers collectively going, hahahahahha).
Cory will do anything to save his reputation and secure his sponsorship deals. Including pay the girl who hates him to pretend she doesn't and fake date him. However, what do they do when the feelings become real?
Cory and Skylar are perfect for each other. They truly see each other for who they are and know that the other person is enough for them, just as they are.
This is a truly wonderful fake dating, sports romance!
Down and Dirty is a fantastic debut from author Maddy Lowe and is book one in the Holden Cove Series. I enjoyed this book so much. The journey of Cory and Sky’s enemies to lovers relationship was so well done and it left me craving more, in the best way. Cory has a playboy reputation, but he is anything but. He is broken and hurting, and has closed himself off from so much of the good in life from a young age. I adored seeing him come alive and seeing his true thoughtful and caring self as his layers were pulled back. Seeing how he cared for Micah as well was so heartwarming. Sky is a badass and a great mom. She cares about others and always puts them first, which means her needs and wants often go directly to the backburner. Cory and Sky give each other exactly what they both need and help each other grow through the process.
This book is slow burn, but Cory and Sky’s chemistry is jumping off the pages early on. When the spice finally comes, well… so does Sky 😏😉 Cory doesn’t just get down and dirty in motocross. He puts her first. Every. Time. Ooof.
What a wonderful debut from author Maddy Lowe! I cannot wait to read book two in the Holden Cove Series and anything else she may have in store for us in the future.
A huge thank you to Maddy Lowe and Grey’s Promotions for the ARC opportunity!
Cannot believe this was the author’s debut book! Because this was so good!! This is the first standalone in the Holden Cove series.
I loved the writing, the story, the motocross sport, all of the characters... plus THE COVER!!! The cover is stunning!! 😍
See, this is why I love supporting indie author’s books because you can tell that those are the author’s that really want it, those are the author’s who put their heart and soul into their books.
Skylar and Cory. 💙🧡 Those two had so much chemistry, and I love how it just kept building and their relationship kept growing over the course of the book. This had the perfect buildup to when the spice hits! &I love that in a book.
I loved Cory. He is literally the most loyal fictional man out there. The way that this man just did not want to give up or quit.. I mean, he’s so loyal that it’s to a fault sometimes lol.
The only 2 things that I will say is that I thought the book was bordering on being a bit long, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and I wish there were more scenes with Skylar, Cory and Micah. That would’ve helped really build the bond between Cory and her son.
I overall really really liked this book, and I’m excited for the next book!
Tropes: 💙 sports romance (motocross) 🧡 fake dating 💙 marriage of convenience 🧡 single mom 💙 small town 🧡 he falls first
This was my first motocross romance book and let me tell you, I loved it! Give me all the sports, fake dating, single parent tropes all day long!
Cory is older than all the other professional motocross riders and isn't ready to give it up, because he doesn't know what the next step is in his life. Then a scandal comes out with the girl he is 'dating' and has to find a way to save his sponsorships. Skyler is a single mom who is the manager of her brother, who is a motocross rider trying to work his way up in the business. Skyler's true passion is to go back to school but life isn't letting her go back yet because of her son's medical bills. Cory comes up with the idea that he and Skyler should 'date' so it will help him with his image and he can give her money to help out with her financial problem.
The tension was just *chef's kiss*, the way they start to be vulnerable with each other is so sweet- made my heart melt, and I loved how Cory was trying to take care of Skyler because she was taking care of everyone else. This was such a good story, and I can't wait for the next one!
Maddy Lowe’s "Down & Dirty" is an exhilarating ride that expertly weaves together themes of love, ambition, and the relentless pursuit of dreams set against the vibrant backdrop of the motocross world. This novel is a perfect blend of heart-pounding action and poignant moments, making it impossible to put down.
The story revolves around Skylar, a fiercely dedicated single mother juggling the demands of her family and her job on her brothers’ motocross team, and Cory, a larger-than-life motocross star whose charisma and talent have won him fame but left him feeling unfulfilled. From the moment these two characters cross paths, their chemistry crackles off the page. Skylar is a breath of fresh air—strong, resilient, and relatable—while Cory is the embodiment of the dreamer caught in the whirlwind of fame. Their interactions are electric, filled with tension, humor, and an undeniable connection that draws readers in.
Lowe’s writing is vibrant and immersive, painting a vivid picture of the motocross scene, from the adrenaline-fueled races to the behind-the-scenes camaraderie. You can almost hear the roar of the engines and feel the excitement of the crowd. The author’s passion for the sport shines through, adding authenticity to the narrative that is both engaging and informative.
What truly sets "Down & Dirty" apart is its exploration of personal growth and the complexities of love. Skylar’s journey as a single mother striving to create a better life for her child, while navigating her feelings for Cory, is beautifully portrayed. The challenges she faces are genuine and relatable, making her victories all the more satisfying. Cory’s character development is equally compelling; his path toward self-discovery and understanding of what truly matters in life resonates deeply.
The romance between Skylar and Cory is a slow burn that is both tender and passionate. Lowe masterfully captures the nuances of their relationship, showcasing the delicate balance between love and responsibility. Their journey is filled with obstacles, but each challenge only serves to deepen their bond and highlight the power of second chances.
"Down & Dirty" is a rollercoaster of emotions, offering laughter, tears, and heartwarming moments that linger long after the final page. Maddy Lowe has crafted a remarkable tale that not only entertains but also inspires readers to chase their dreams, embrace their truths, and fight for what they love.
If you’re searching for a contemporary romance that combines excitement with heartfelt storytelling, look no further. "Down & Dirty" is an absolute must-read that will leave you cheering for Skylar and Cory long after you’ve finished the book. Grab your helmet and buckle up—this is one ride you don’t want to miss!
The world of motocross is not one I visit often, but every now and then, an author writes a book within this sports world and I find myself loving the excitement of the sport, the adrenaline pumping races, and the antics that are part of this world. Maddy Lowe pulled me into this world in Down and Dirty. You can easily tell this wasn’t just a trope for her book, but a sport she has researched and spent time in. I appreciate that, as someone who is not super familiar with it, but didn’t feel lost when it came to reading this book.
Skylar was someone I wanted to reach in and hug. She does so much for everyone else, never stopping to take care of her. She takes care of so much regarding her family, to the point that it is the norm and not seen as her going above and beyond. Her son needs extra medical support and her ex is no longer helping with those costs. It seems like his upcoming wedding is more important. So when an opportunity arises to help cover said medical costs, she seriously considers it. The catch? She has to fake date someone she can’t stand.
Corey needs to save his reputation in the motocross world and a relationship will do just that. He isn’t one for commitment so a fake one it is. Asking the girl he isn’t afraid of feelings actually developing is the perfect solution to his problem. But he quickly learns there is so much more to Skylar than what’s on the surface. He sees everything she does for her family and what little is done for her. As their fake relationship progresses, their real feelings begin to grow. Cory knows one thing, he is determined to show Skylar how special she really is.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The enemies to lovers trope is one of my favorites, even if this isn’t true enemies to lovers. A reminder to not always make snap judgements and people are going through unseen battles. If you look closely, it isn’t hard to see the real person who is just trying to survive. Cory and Skylar brought romance, heat, and witty banter to life consistently in this book. An absolutely enjoyable read from Maddy Lowe!
As always, review any author notes before reading.

I was a little skeptical about this book because of the name but oh how I loved to be proven wrong lmfao
I absolutely adored and devoured this book! Skylar, a single mother is on the road with her motocross racer brother, meets Cory, a fellow racer on the same team, and if looks could kill, Cory would be dead lol
Cory’s finds himself in a media scandal when his ex’s sex tapes leak. Of course to clean up his image, he strikes a deal with Sky once he learns she needs money, so they begin fake dating. Firstly, I just want to say that I expected a past paced, really fun and sexy sports romance. But my god was it anything but. Not only was the fake dating not over the top, it was just so so so perfectly delivered. I was kicking my feet and squealing at every chapter.
I love love love loved the slow burn between Cory and Skyler. I loved seeing how they took their time to get to know each other, especially since Sky was apprehensive about him from the moment Cory was announced as her brother’s team mate. I cannot emphasise enough how lovely it was to see them gradually fall in love and how comfortable they felt communicating their feelings with one another. I really hate when there’s miscommunication in fake dating romances and this had none of that and it was just perfectly done. Its been a while since I’ve read a romance of characters between the ages of 29 and 34 that actually acted their age. I was so gone on their banter and the way Cory treated Skyler’s son!!!!!! I am a gonner for those moments. I just wish there were more of them.
I’m now a Maddy Lowe fan and taking applications for the fan club bc this was so fun, and sexy and heartfelt and I couldn’t put it down!! Cannot wait to read more of her books!
Thank you Grey's Promotions and Maddy Lowe for an ARC of this book. 💖
This debut from Maddy Lowe blew me away. It is funny, captivating, & hella spicy. This has everything I love in a sports romance. From the beginning, Cory & Sky's stories drew me in & their enemies-to-lovers relationship took me on a ride I didn't want to get off.
Sky is a badass. She's a woman in a man's world & doesn't let anyone or anything get in her way. She's a dedicated mom, loyal to her family & puts everyone's needs above hers. That's how she finds herself saying yes to Cory's proposition to be his fake girlfriend.
Cory is so interesting - he's been alone for a long time & has never had to consider anyone else before Sky came into his life. That attraction they have is there from the beginning inside their bickering banter. I love the progression of their relationship & how Cory falls first & hard for Sky. This is a bit of a slow burn but when that spice hits, it's filled with lust & love. I ate it up.
There's some emotional drama that tests Sky & Cory that fit nicely into this plot. I devoured this book within 24 hours, loving every moment. This book introduces us to characters that sets this series up nicely and I am so excited to see what happens next!
🏁 Motocross Romance ❤️🔥 Enemies to Lovers ➶ Teammate's Sister ⚡️ Fake Dating 💍 Marriage of Convenience ❣️ Single Mom 💖 He falls first 🔥 Slow Burn ✌🏻 Dual POV
“You saw me when no one else did, you forced me to see myself. You’ve challenged me, inspired me, and believed in me. You’ve taken my little family and made it your own, and I have never felt so dafe. When I’m with you I feel seen, not just for who I am or what I can give, but for every possibility I’ve never even imagined myself. you follow your heart and you give everything you have, and I will never understand how I got so lucky to be the one you chose. But I chose you, and I will choose you, everyday, for the rest of my life.”
This enemies-to-lovers story featuring Skylar Stone and Cory Ellis, a cocky motocross star, is an entertaining ride from start to finish. Skylar can’t stand Cory, and who could blame her? He’s a playboy with a scandalous ex threatening his endorsements. Desperate to clean up his image, he hired Skylar—his teammate’s no-nonsense older sister—to be his fake girlfriend. It sounds simple: she needs cash for her son, Micah, and he needs to save his reputation. But what unfolds is anything but straightforward.
In this debut novel, the author clearly researched motocross, capturing its adrenaline-fueled lifestyle authentically. As Skylar and Cory’s staged romance develops, the tension between them blurs the lines between reality and pretense. Watching their complicated arrangement unfold—especially Cory’s interactions with Micah—adds depth to the story. The slow burn is beautifully executed, making you root for them even when they drive each other crazy. Plus, who doesn’t love a happy ending? This book is a delightful mix of humor, heart, and unexpected love.
A big thanks to Grey’s Promotion and Maddy Lowe for providing me with a digital ARC of this book!
This book messed up my sleep schedule but I’m not even the least bit mad. I DEVOURED this book! Literally only a few chapters in and I knew it was a 5 star read. I was kicking my feet while reading.
This was my first motocross book and it did not disappoint. I mean come on it was mixed with fake dating between two people who didn’t like each other. This book was just asking to be read by me and I’m so glad that I did. I’m so glad that I recommend you read it too. Like I said it messed up my sleep schedule but I don’t even care, I’d do it again.
Sign me up for the whole series! So this is the first book in the Holden Cove series and I will be eagerly awaiting the other books.
This book follows a motocross star, Cory, who people think might be too old to keep going the way he is. He signs on to a team to try and finish out his time. This team includes a young rider who managed by his sister, Skylar. She is annoyed by Cory and sees him as a stuck up guy who has things handed to him. But when she needs money to pay for her son’s medical bills and he needs a fake girlfriend to clean up his image and not fall in love with, it’s the perfect match.
They just don’t know how perfect the match truly is.
If you’re still reading this review and haven’t already added this book to your tbr, what are you doing? This book was amazing with mature and sensible characters, you aren’t going to get some miscommunication trope that could be fixed with a conversation. Skylar is s single mom who may not always put herself first but doesn’t let things hold her down. She gets it done. Cory is a man who is head over heels for “his girl” and he doesn’t hide it. Now go add this book to your tbr!

💙 Motocross Racing 💙 He Falls First 💙 Fake Dating 💙 Marriage of Convenience 💙 Dual POV 💙 Single Mom
Sexy, feisty, insanely sweet, with a little mine, and all those delicious alphahole mistakes that make you fall all over yourself for an MC, tucked between the thrill and fear of motocross, the struggle to take something that’s only for you, and the risk of losing it all. This is just a hell of a read that makes the fire that burns between these enemies to lovers irresistible, the care and safety they give each other gorgeous, and the electric chemistry that crackles between them heady and unstoppable, in a story where the cocky, playboy, racing star isn’t at all who he seems and the sassy manager and single mom is way more than she’s ever been given credit for, and it’s a dynamic and dynamite read that is unputdownable. I’m in love with Cory, on multiple levels, and all I really want is more. More of his surprising depth and insight, more of his sexy dirty mouth, and more of the way he falls for Skylar so freaking hard you kind of just explode with happiness. I adore Skylar, who’s put up with more than she should have, has self-sacrificed enough and deserves her dreams, and who has always put her adorable little boy first, but I extra adore that no matter how hard she tries she can’t fight what’s building between her and Cory. This read is excellent on so many levels, the tension, the fake dating, the romance, the pieces of themselves they share, even the drama and third act break up, and the motocross racing, gah ate it up because motocross is the super sexy sport that doesn’t get used nearly enough in romance reads. Just a genuinely fabulous read I would highly recommend, loudly, from a rooftop, with a bullhorn.
I absolutely loved this book! Down & Dirty follows Skylar, a single mom who manages her motocross racer brother, and Cory, a fellow racer on the same team. After a scandalous sex tape involving Cory’s ex leaks, he needs to clean up his image. When Cory learns that Skylar could use some extra cash, they strike a deal to fake date. Initially, I expected a fun, fast-paced sports romance with an over-the-top fake dating trope (which I would love), but this book delivered so much more.
The slow-burn romance between Skylar and Cory was beautiful to watch unfold. I loved how they took the time to get to know each other and gradually fell in love. Their open communication throughout the story—always being clear about their feelings—gave the book a mature, grounded quality. It felt natural, especially given that they’re 29 and 34. I was hooked on their dynamic from the very start and couldn’t put the book down. Although the pacing stumbled a bit during the third-act conflict, by that point, I was so invested in the story that it didn’t affect my overall enjoyment. The one thing that held me back from giving this a full 5 stars was the lack of interactions between Cory and Micah, Skylar’s son. We’re told that Cory adores Micah and is thrilled to have both of them in his life, but without enough on-page bonding moments, it was hard to fully believe it.
Thank you Grey's Promotions and Maddy Lowe for an ARC of this book.
Cory and Skylar are our protagonists, and, initially, they seem like water and oil. Assumptions on the other made at each of their behalf, but when they each need a solution to their individual problems, they realize they are the ticket to solve both.
A contracted relationship suddenly flourishes into something far more. Their tepid relationship warms into a steady friendship, as assumptions are clarified and realizations made, and then it sizzles hot as that friendship blooms into something that most certainly feels like love. Love they both deserve.
I enjoyed both protagonists equally— not only for their part in this love story but for their individual. It was admirable how they both faced their unique situations with one foot in front of the other. How they chose to resolve things that needed tending in their lives. And how their resulting partnership helped to do just that.
I admit my attention did wane as the plot went on, the pacing slowed and I lost that sense of anticipation I held towards the beginning. It became long-winded. Nevertheless, I do very much appreciate the slow burn of the romance, and how the leads spent time simply getting to know each other. Their love never felt rushed, it felt absolutely earned. And that, for me, is always a big ask I have in romances. I want it to feel earned— and it did.
Thank you Grey’s Promotions for this complimentary copy, I leave this honest voluntarily. 3.5✨
🏍️ Down and Dirty by @maddylowebooks 🏍️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌶️🌶️🌶️
Y’all — Down and Dirty blew me away! This book is everything: heart-pounding action, slow-burn romance, and characters you can’t help but root for. Cory Ellis, the motocross daredevil, meets his match in Skylar—a smart, strong-willed woman who knows her way around the racing world but dreams of something more. When a fake relationship proposal from Cory offers her a financial solution for her son, Micah, neither of them expects to find real feelings in the process. 💑
The connection between Cory and Skylar is pure magic! 💥 He respects her strength, supports her dreams beyond motocross, and grows into a role model for Micah in such a genuine way. Plus, the way he handles her wild brother? Chef’s kiss. 👏 Their chemistry is so intense but beautifully paced—it had me turning pages nonstop, waiting for them to realize they’re perfect for each other. The journey of watching them both soften and open up is truly something special. 💖
The banter, the romance, and the mix of family dynamics make this book a total win. I felt all the emotions—seriously from laughs to tears and a few choice colorful words once or twice. If you’re looking for a five-star read that has it all, Down and Dirty is the perfect pick. Can’t wait for book two to get to know more of this group! 🏆📖
Wow... This was my first Motocross romance and my god did it not disappoint, I was hooked in and cursed having to work a full-time job rather than being able to read all day,
This story follows Skylar, the eternal people pleaser, always doing stuff for everyone else whether it's her brother, parents, her son and even her ex, and doesn't take time for what she wants, in enters Cory Ellis, the Motorcross star whom is in a bind and is in need of a Fake girlfriend to save his reputation, but like the track the lines between real and fake start to get real muddy.
Maddy has built a sturdy base for a great series, providing the right amount to detail in the locations as well as its characters, and boy do I want to know more about what makes them tick, I'm looking at you Micah. I am here for an angsty man! I am ready to dive straight into Slash and Burn.
I would highly recommend that you hop on your bike and face the whoops to read this and cause you will feel like you've just taken on a course along side Cory and Ronnie but it is worth every bump and scrape. For fans of Motocross Romance, Fake Dating, Single Mum X Teammates Big Sister, Enemies to Lovers with a delicious helping of Spicy Goodness.
I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH! Down and Dirty follows Skylar our resident bad ass single mom who’s strapped for cash thanks to her conniving ex who is also the father of her son Micah. In comes Cory, a seasoned motocross rider that is in need of a complete imagine makeover. One thing leads to another and even though they can’t stand eachother they agree to an arrangement where Skylar pretends to be his girlfriend and Cory pays her for it. What could go wrong?🙃
At first glance I was a bit skeptical of this book but my words were quickly swallowed because this debut book had me kicking my feet and giggling like a school girl!!! There are so many tender, vulnerable and down right hilarious moments throughout this book, I couldn’t put it down and ended up reading this in one day. I will say the third act conflict had me worried for a second because it messed with the pacing, but Maddy Lowe recovered beautifully and in a way that honored the true nature of the characters

Thank you to Maddy Lowe and Grey’s Promotions for an ARC of this book!
Down & Dirty by Maddy Lowe is a slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers contemporary romance that combines the grit of motocross with the complexities of family and love. Skylar is a single mom juggling co-parenting with her ex, Tommy, managing her younger brother’s motocross career, and dealing with financial strain. Her rough exterior hides the pressure she faces, especially when Tommy and his now fiancée, add to her burdens.
Cory, a brooding and ambitious motocross playboy, is focused on securing his future beyond his career. When he meets Sky, he proposes a fake dating arrangement—she gets a weekly salary to help with her financial struggles, and Cory avoids the media circus of dating a supermodel. What starts as a business deal soon turns into something real when Cory unexpectedly proposes, and they marry in haste.
However, Cory has been hiding the severity of his injuries, and the couple’s relationship is tested when his condition worsens. The story highlights the importance of communication in a relationship, showcasing how love can grow in unexpected places. Maddy Lowe’s debut novel captures the ups and downs of a marriage built on honesty and trust, leaving readers excited for her next book, Slash and Burn.
To Sky, Cory is a walking contradiction- he’s a rough motocross rider with polished endorsements deal yet somehow he’s gotten her to see a side of him he’s never shown anyone else. To Cory, he only had one goal and that was to win races and get deals until he met Sky and everything he thought he knew and planned for changed. She challenged him in many ways and what started out as a business arrangement on paper turned into the real deal faster than either of them imagined.
Cory knew Sky and Micah were special and just being in their orbit showed him just how much he wanted to put them first in every way and care for them without hesitation. It was fun to see Sky and Cory banter back and worth while falling so effortlessly for each other once they peaked behind the curtain and saw their true selves and explored their intense chemistry.
I’m excited to see where this series takes us in the charming town of Holden Cove and I love a good hockey romance and Cory’s hockey star buddy Grady is the hero in the next book.
Thank you @greyspromo and @maddylowebooks for this eARC in exchange for my honest feedback
this book is roller coaster of emotions and all the tropes are blended effortlessly into the book.
skylar is an amazing sassy fmc that doesn't take shit from others but also vulnerable. she put other's needs before her own and her struggles to complete her dream amidst everything and supporting her child was heartbreaking.
cory is one of the greenest flag to exist, he fucks up but also makes up for it. he might seem playboy to the world but he is broken, hurting and closed off guy. he has lots of layers to himself that just shows how kind, caring he is.
their chemistry was off the charts since the first, even when they hated each other. i loved how their relationship progressed slowly giving them time to understand each other and truly see them for who they are. they really had an intense tension between them and when they give in, everything just became 10x hotter. the fake dating and marriage of convenience was done so realistically and i loved how gone they were both for eachother. they worked on their issues and never gave up on each other. also the way he prioritised her and loved micah as his own was large points.
I went into this pretty blind, not knowing what it was going to be about. I ended up loving that it was a motocross, fake dating romance!
I was a little wary at first because I didn’t like how much Skylar hated Cory without even talking with him. There were just a lot of assumptions that led to so much hate. Not really what I vibe with. But I ended up loving their interactions and how they were with each other once they got to know one another.
Which is why I was so thrown off in the last 20ish percent of the book. I get Cory didn’t tell her about his scans (which based on the first time it was mentioned I actually thought there was more wrong with him) but riding was his livelihood and she just expected him to drop it immediately after she found out. I get she was scared but I really hated her reaction. The third act drama wasn’t it for me. I also wanted more of a resolution with her ex.
Overall, it was a good story. My rating would have been higher without the ending drama because I really loved how they were growing together. Cory really had Sky’s well-being in mind at all times.
Thank you to Maddy Lowe and The Author Agency for the ARC.

A big thank you to The Author Agency and author Maddy Lowe for providing me with a copy of Down and Dirty. This is my honest and voluntary review. 🧡
This is book 1 in the Holden Cove series of stand alone small town romances.
A huge shout out to the author, Maddy Lowe, as this is her debut book and she did an excellent job! 👏🏼 Her writing is wonderful and I cannot wait to read more of her work including book 2 in this series Slash & Burn!
I love a good sports romance but this was my first motocross romance and I LOVED it! 😍 Easily a 5 star read!
Skylar is always putting her loved one's needs before her own, including her brother's career before her own aspirations. Skylar can’t stand Cory but when he proposes fake dating to benefit them both how can she say no? Will their fake dating turn into real feelings?
I really, really disliked Tommy. He was such a jerk to Skylar and only cared about himself! Thank goodness she was no longer putting up with his crap. Now, Cory on the other hand! 😍 He is the perfect man. Sweet, caring, understanding, always puts Skylar first and not to mention HOT!
Overall rating: 5/5 Character rating: 5/5 Plot rating: 5/5
Down & Dirty by @maddylowebooks review! Motocross: a world I was born into and know very well! I won't lie, it's REALLY hard to read books about worlds you know well, because most don't live up to expectations, but this one did! Down and Dirty is book #1 in the Holden Cove Series that follows our MC playboy Cory, and FMC single mom Skylar. Both are having their fair share of on & off track drama and decide to band together to get through it. The way both Cory & Skylar are written & brought to life shows that a lot of research and care was put into it which I absolutely LOVE! I know my motorsport loving girlies tend to struggle with said motorsports romance books, but I can promise you that this one is SO much different than the others and one of the best out there! Cory & Skylar (and little Micah) have my heart 💜! Out now on Kindle & Paperback! . 🩵 Playboy/Single Mom 🩵 Motorsports 🩵 Small Town 🩵 Marriage of Convenience 🩵 Slow Burn 🩵 He Falls First 🩵 Enemies to Lovers . #books #bookrecs #bookrecommendations #Kindle #kindleunlimited #romancereader #romancebooks #spicybooks #Book #bookstagram #booktok #motocross #motorsportsromance
Skylar is a single mom who manages her brother's Motocross career. She has an arrangement with the child's father that isn't on paper. Up until this point, it's been OK, but he will be marrying soon, which means her finances will increase with having to pay insurance for a chronic disease for her son. She's in a bind. Cory is on the same team as her brother and has a persona of selfish to do and earn it all competitively, but he's aging out of Motocross. Cory has always had PR arrangements, and the recent one is blowing up with bad press. Cory and Skylar agree to a fake arrangement for money to help her finances and him for his his tarnishing image.
The more Skylar sees Cory outside of the public scene, the more she sees his real self, which is not some uncaring b@hole. They both start catching the feels and finally have their F#&^ it moment. When they give in, it's hot. Skylar and Cory both have some maturing to do and personal growth, so you see it in this story.
Thank you, author, for the ARC! Release Date: October 25, 2024
This novel was both a new to me sports romance and a new to me author, and I am excited to read more from her.
Down and Dirty is a sports romance that centers around the sport of motocross, That being said, it took me a minute to get into the the lingo and understanding of the sport itself ( yes, I did google the terms, but that is just a me thing).
I really loved the enemies to lovers, although I think a lot of that stems from the misunderstandings that they both have about each other.
I really enjoyed Cory's genuine care and concern for Skylar. Even when they were still in the enemeies phase, he could not seem to help himself to ensure she was taken care of or had what she needed. I also really loved that he genuinely saw her at this time too. Well, before they became more, he still say beyond what she was showing the rest of the world.
I loved Skylar. She does not let answer one step all over her; as a woman in a man's world, she has no other choice, but she was also soft; you could see how she wanted someone to know the true her, but she wasn't sure how to let someone do that but still be what she needed.
The banter between these too. Love, and the great thing is that you can see the clear moment when the relationship changed.
When we get the spice. hold on... because it spices!
I really enjoyed this novel and I look forward to the next one in this series!
Thank you Maddy Lowe and Grey PR for the ARC in return of a honest review.
This was an okay read for me. The writing flowed well for the most part, and that's always a good thing with a new to me author. I wasn't a fan of Skylar at the beginning. She had a bad opinion of Corey. Not for anything actual personal, but just what she thought she knew. I thought that was a pretty crappy thing to do and actually talk to people about. She did get better as the story progressed, and I did like her and Corey together. Corey was a good guy, and I thought that he developed well as the story went on too. I'm always a sucker for a fake romance, and I love it when the couple ends up being exactly what the other needs. They of course get their HEA, which is a must for me. The only thing I would have liked to be different would be a better conclusion with Micah's dad. That situation is talked about, but I didn't feel like it was resolved. Other than that, it was a good read, and I would be willing to read her again. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.
I liked these two. Skylar does make some assumptions about Corey but she quickly finds out that he’s nothing like what she thinks he is. He’s caring, with more depth and understanding, seeing her like no one else does. And while he’s already a good guy, Corey grows thru his relationship with Skylar, realizing that there’s more to life and their relationship than he would have imagined.
There’s a bit of angst – they got together under less than truthful circumstances so it isn’t surprising. It makes sense for their situation and their personalities, not drama for drama’s sake, and it is resolved in a way that worked for me.
While writing this review, I found out this is the first work by Lowe and I am pleasantly surprised. The pacing was a smidge off (it drug just a bit) but the characters were really well done and I liked the way their relationship evolved. I’m excited to see what comes with book 2!
