Born in Biggar, Saskatchewan, I married my high school sweetheart, Marlene. Ten years later we had our Daughter Jackie. We moved to the USA for twenty years, recently returned home to Canada. Marlene and I now live in the beautiful Okanagan valley. If I'm not reading or writing action adventures, I am probably hiking, biking or playing tennis. Some of my favorite authors include: Thomas Perry, Robert Ludlum, Dan Brown, Clive Cussler, Harlan Coben, Orson Scott Card, and many others.

As a passionate Formula 1 fan and an avid reader, Braking Point by Wayne Kerr was a truly exhilarating experience. This book strikes the perfect balance between a compelling story and the high-octane world of F1, setting itself apart from the typical romance novels or autobiographies often found in motorsport literature.

The novel follows two vastly different characters throughout a single Formula 1 season, exploring not only the intense competition on the track but also the personal struggles and relationships that define their lives. The focus on family and friendships as central themes adds an emotional depth that elevates the narrative beyond just racing. These characters felt real, and their arcs kept me invested from start to finish.

What really sets Braking Point apart is the meticulous attention to detail. Each chapter is centered around a specific race, complete with a map of the circuit at the beginning—complete with labeled turns—and updated leaderboards for both drivers and constructors at the end. This creative structure allows readers to follow the season as though it were real, giving the book a sense of authenticity that is rare in sports fiction.

As someone deeply familiar with F1, I was thrilled by how accurately the author depicted the tracks, even down to the smallest nuances of their layouts. It's clear Kerr spent countless hours in a simulator to capture the intricacies of both the circuits and the cars. The descriptions of the races are so vivid and precise that I often found myself biting my nails, racing through the pages to see how pivotal racing moments unfolded between Niki and Shu.

What makes this book even more accessible is the way Kerr introduces the reader to F1. In the opening chapters, the author provides clear and concise definitions of racing terms, catering to both seasoned fans and newcomers to the sport. Even as a longtime F1 enthusiast, I learned a few things from these explanations, which deepened my appreciation of the story.

Overall, Braking Point is a quick yet unforgettable read. The blend of richly developed characters, gripping narrative, and immersive racing details makes it a standout addition to the world of motorsport fiction. Whether you're a lifelong F1 fan or just someone looking for a thrilling story with emotional depth, this book is a must-read. Wayne Kerr has created an amazing story that puts readers in the driver's seat, delivering a heart-pounding journey from start to finish.

this read like an extremely long wikipedia summary at best and the drunk guy at the sports bar mansplaining motorsport to you at worst.

while i appreciate the (excrutiating) attention to detail, what the author really wanted to write was a sim racing manual and it shows. characters are one-dimensional cardboard cutouts, there is zero conflict or palpable development and any inter-personal relationships are discussed in the most unnatural sounding exposition dialogue imaginable.

SPORTS is a vehicle (pun intended) for NARRATIVE and narrative is the bones and flesh of STORY. this book barely had either.

what pissed me off the most were the glimpses of potential shining through every fifty pages, but none of the interesting aspects were in any way addressed (the sexism preventing niki from entering f2 and the nepotism that ultimately lands her the full time seat, the classism shu experiences that is shoved under the carpet a page later, the family dynamics and conflicts that are resolved within a page and amount to "wir haben uns alles ganz doll lieb" and zero nuance, i could go on but i wont)

I haven't read a racing book in a long time and this was a great way to return to the driver's seat. This book definitely deserves the pole position.
I love how the book is structured around each race of a Formula One season, the top level of racing. The details about the cars from the driver's position and the pit crew are fascinating. The characters, at all levels, come across very authentically.
Don't get me wrong, it's not only about the race; many of the characters have lives away from the track. I won't say more to avoid spoiling the reading for you.
This wonderful story gets 4.9 stars from me, I am picky about certain things.

for a sports romance, the sport element was written so well. normally when reading a sports romance, the detail and time isn’t dedicated to the sport but more towards the romance but in this book you can tell that the author really dedicated time in trying to explain the effort and process that goes into being an f1 driver which i really appreciate. however, this did lead to the fmc and mmc not being as fleshed out as i hoped they would be leading to some plot points just being left. if niki’s struggles with being the first female f1 driver and joshua’s family relationship was developed in greater detail, i definitely think i would enjoy the book more.

I am always a sucker for sports themed book. I actually learned a lot about F1 racing. I admit I had the plot pretty much figured out part way through but there were characters to cheer for and that made it fun read.
