A year has passed since the war against Jack’s father that freed the humans from their roles as blood slaves and servants to the vampire race. Having left the palace behind in order to ensure that the outer towns are obeying the new laws, Jack struggles to come to terms with the grief and haunting memories that drove him from the palace in the first place. He’s content to lose himself in the outer lands and the obscurity that they offer him. That is, until he encounters Hannah. Growing up in the small town of Chippman, Hannah had long ago accepted the fact that she would never leave it. When Jack walks into her life, and turns it upside down, she quickly realizes that not everything is what she’d believed it to be. Knowing that Jack will reject her if he learns the truth about her, Hannah struggles to fight her growing attraction to him. For though the town of Chippman seems normal on the outside, its residents harbor secrets that they’ve taken great pains to keep hidden. Secrets that have forced the town to live under the rule of the one man that could tear Jack and Hannah apart forever.
***Though this is a stand alone novel it is highly recommended that the first four books in the Captive Series be read first.
***Mature YA/New Adult. This book contains some language, violence, and sexual situations. Recommended for ages sixteen and up.

Recommended reading order for The Captive Series. Captured (Book 1) Renegade (Book 2) Refugee (Book 3) Salvation (Book 4) Redemption (Book 5) Broken (The Captive series prequel) Vengeance (Book 6)
Erica Stevens is the author of the Captive Series, Coven Series, Kindred Series, Fire & Ice Series, Ravening Series, and the Survivor Chronicles. When not out with friends and family, she is at home with her husband, son, dogs, cat, and horse.
Ms. Stevens has written another great one! The Captive series is one of my favorites, even though it isn't something you'd find in my usual genres. Although I knew that I would read this book just because I love the series so much, I didn't expect that it would appeal to me as much, since the story wasn't centered around Braith and Aria. Honestly, I had prepared myself to be disappointed and possibly part ways with the series. I just couldn't fathom that anything could compare to the intense and forbidden love story that unfolded between Braith and Aria. I'm glad to say that I was pleasantly surprised!
Jake and Hannah's story is beautiful and endearing. I didn't want to put it down. I loved that their story was their own, and not a retelling of Braith and Aria's with the names changed. Yes, there were some similarities, such as the "bloodlink" bond, but the story was definitely original.
As I read more about Jake, aka Jericho, I grew to like him more and more. He was sweet, compassionate and fiercely loyal. The story provides many details about his time with the rebels through Jake's flashbacks. It was nice to have those holes from the prior books in the series filled in, and to see these events from his perspective.
Hannah was immediately likable and seemed to be the female version of Jake in many ways. It was gratifying to see each of these wonderful characters find the love and adoration they so deserved. I am so glad that I went along for the ride!
Entertaining read but missing the spark of the previous ones.
How on earth did I miss this book? I loved the Captive series but assumed 'Salvation' was the last one so I wasn't looking for a fifth book, anyway I was so excited when I found this, it takes place a year after the war, Braith and Aria are King and Queen, new laws have been put in place and things are slowly turning around. Jack and William are both struggling with their memories and grief so they've taken on the roll of travelling to the more obscure lands and villages ensuring that Braith's new laws are being followed. Jack and William find themselves in the remote town of Chippman and something doesn't feel right, on the surface everything looks as it should but they're getting a bad vibe. I enjoyed this book particularly Jacks memories and yes it's an entertaining read but for me it was missing something, it just didn't have the same spark as the previous four plus it was more than a little predictable.
Jack/Jerichos story was all I could have wished for!
Jack is a dominate force to be reckoned with. After suffering the loss of someone he loved last year he and William have traveled making sure all are following the Kings (Braith aka his brothers) law. Coming across a hidden mountain town gives Jack the action he had been itching for and the blood link he never knew existed. *sigh* Jack is sexy as hell.
Hannah is an “Undesirable” or at least she thought so until Jack can not manage to keep his eyes and hands off of her. Hannah finds herself in a dilemma force herself to marry Calvin (aka the big baddie) to save her family and town or take a risk Jack is capable of saving them all. Hmmmmm i would pick yummy Jack every time.
Awesome addition to the series. New and exciting storyline which tied in wonderfully with Braith’s rise to being the king.
2nd time reading review: The first 4 books in the series focus around Aria and Braith, which I absolutely love both of them. This is the first book from someone else's point of view, which I like and adds a different view point and added depth to the story. I'm starting to remember my favorite books in the series which are for sure books #4, the prequel, and #5. I'm truly looking forward to rereading the prequel next, while it is book #8, I remember how much you learn from it and why it is recommended to be read between books 5 and 6. Jack is still one of my favorites, Hannah not so much but I still liked her.
Original review: So far this is my 2nd favorite in this series, #4 was my favorite because the war chapters were amazing! However, I have loved Jack from book 1 and there were some interesting and unexpected things in this book. I'm really hoping one of the next books is focused more around William or Daniel
That’s right! After four books of being truly awesome supporting his big brother, Braith, Jack is back as the hero of his very own book, and it’s fantastic!
I love The Captive series! (The first book - Captured - is free on Amazon... GET IT NOW!). It completely took me by surprise when I discovered it last year, and I devoured the books back to back in an absolute whirlwind. I took the opportunity to do a reread of the whole series before I started this, which I recommend if you are a little bit shady on details, as a lot happened in those four books, and while there is some recap, I really appreciated having it all fresh in my mind before I started.
And fair warning – this review will contain spoilers for the earlier books in the series.
So this book picks up a year after Salvation ended, with the big battle against Jack’s sadistic vampire father over and his big brother, Braith now the (very sexy and swoony) king. Vampires and humans are now living side by side in a new society, and Jack and William have left the palace to explore the outer regions and ensure that Braith’s new laws are being adhered to.
Truly, they’re both on the run. Neither of them are dealing with their grief, or the memories of the past, and with nothing holding them down they have taken the opportunity to go off exploring without having to deal with real life.
Their travels bring them to the town of Chippman, and into the life of Hannah. Hannah is a vampire who runs a tavern with what is left of her family. While she appears to have a happy life, we soon discover that all is not as it seems, and the vampires of the town are actually all “undesirables” - not normal vampires, but those who have something ‘wrong’ with them. They banded together in one place to escape persecution from society under the old king’s rule – but of course, that just made them easy pickings when a sadistic, power-hungry psycho moved into town with the intention of ruling them and making their lives hell.
Jack and Hannah are drawn to each other from the moment they first lay eyes on each other, and as the secrets of the town are uncovered, and Jack pisses off the bad guy - making an already tense situation even more dangerous – the attraction between them grows, the UST hits epic levels and, they can’t keep away from each other.
“Undesirable”… “Hannah, you might be the most desirable woman I’ve ever encountered.”
Oh yes, Jack is a smooth one alright! Having witnessed the love that his siblings have for their partners, he recognises what is happening to the two of them, and he dives on in, and I love that! Hannah is more reluctant, but knowing her background, and the life she has led, it’s completely understandable. And she doesn’t resist for too long before caving to the sweet and tender yet violently protective vampire.
But danger is still lurking, and the bad guy just won’t go away, so be prepared for some truly disturbing evil stuff and some epic action scenes!
Braith, Aria and Daniel all make an appearance, and I loved the opportunity to catch up with them! I also loved the time we got to spend with William. The friendship between him and Jack is fantastic, and I loved his part of the story.
The story moves at a quick pace, and kept me enthralled the whole way through. The ending had my heart racing, with lots of action and a couple of big twists which are clearly leading to at least one more book – hooray! Although rest assured, this one is definitely cliffy free, and ends beautifully.
I loved this book! I loved being back in Erica Stevens’ world, I love the characters, and I loved Jack and Hannah’s story. I can’t wait for more.
By far the best book yet! Don’t get me wrong, I adored Braith and Aria (still do), but the plot, development, dialogue—the everything—the writing style has gone through such an evolution that it’s mind blowing.
The plot: I had to force myself to put down my Kindle at 1:00 a.m. I nearly murdered my family because they wouldn’t let me read. I couldn’t stop thinking about this book no matter what I was doing. The plot grabbed me by the throat and dragged me through without a second’s rest. The “squee” moments and the “hell no” moments were mixed together with perfect balance to keep my eyeballs affixed to my screen. Highest marks here.
The characters: In books 3-4, we get brief glimpses into Jack’s psyche, usually when he’s thinking about the war or trying to navigate Braith’s volcanic temper regarding Aria. In this book, we delve much, much deeper, exploring how Jack ended up with the rebels to begin with, and what goes on in that head of his. A lot of it I would never have guessed and it was all the more fun for it.
I adored Hannah! She’s tough, determined, but also has a plethora of insecurities due to her “defect” and the lifestyle she was raised into. She and Jack are beautiful together and they’re one of those couples to make the fangirls squee and scream with delight.
Some of the characters from the earlier books also make an appearance and I was a little surprised to see them again. There was one point where I was thinking “Braith and Aria—leave! This is Hannah and Jack’s story now!” But they fit in nicely and it was kind of funny to see Jack come to understand just what it is Braith went through when he lost Aria. (The “how did you not kill me” conversation was so funny!)
I have received word that there will be a sixth book—one dedicated to Aria’s brother, William. I’m a little hesitant, but then I was hesitant with this one. I have high hopes and it looks like I will be a fan of this series for some time yet!
I loved this book the most of the ones I've read of the series so far. Of course a lot has to do with it was about my favorite vampire rebel Jack! I just absolutely adore him & loved watching him go through things his brother went through previously...karma huh, lol. This book had a much better pace & the grammatical errors were definitely less than in the previous books. I'm glad Jack was front & center & he got the love he deserved. I loved William being with him as well & would've never seen his story going the way it did. Hopefully we'll get more of all of them. I devoured this series & again the sexual situations are few & in between you still feel the smoldering heat between all the couples. I sure hope this series continues. I did miss Ashby & even Gideon but thank goodness others made an appearance.
"He was where she belonged, where she would always belong."
This was cute. Though it still had some of the darker elements like the rest of the series, I would say it was still a bit more light hearted, especially with the romance, which was super cute. I liked the heroine, and loved Jack like I did in the previous books. It was a bit insta love but I understand why it is since they are bloodlinked, and the insta part didn't really annoy me which is good. The plot was enjoyable too and never dragged, though this felt a bit more like a novella. I didn't care for the flashbacks too much at the beginning but I also understand why the author put them there, and even if I wasn't a fan of them necessarily, I still enjoyed seeing some of those characters and what they were like before.
I enjoyed seeing Braith, my bae, and Aria again, and William of course who is one of my favorite characters in this series so I'm exited to see what's to come of him now in his book after what happened to him here. So overall, a great, easy read.
For me, this series has been an average read until I read Redemption. I'm not a huge fan of Aria and Braith. Their story was good but at times felt over dramatic and repetitive. What made me still kept on going was the awesome cast of side characters this series has. I've been more interested in William, Daniel, David, Jack and Gideon. I was over joyed when I found that this one was about my favorite rebel vampire, Jack and I enjoyed this more than the previous books. And I liked Hannah. She was sweet and compassionate, just like Jack. The camaraderie between Jack and William, Jack's flash backs of the time when he first joined the rebel and his memories of David was a joy to read. I just wish there were more memories of David. I missed his dynamic character and grieved for him. I'm hoping all the rest of the characters will get their own stories too.
This was very good, but I don't know if it is quite a 5...I think more of a 4-4.5. It took longer than I would have liked to get into it and because of the pace, writing and a little bit because if Hannah I wouldn't give it a 5
I loved Jack's character but I wasn't a huge fan of Hannah. She was fine and nice enough, but I really disliked the way she handled the Calvin situation. She just vacillated too much from strong to helpless, focused too much on sacrificing her self-worth to keep others safe, instead of being proactive and smart about the situation. She didn't want to be thought if as weak, nor did she want her friends to be seen as weak, yet she constantly threw herself into the mix like no one else could defend themselves. It was irritating.
Jack was awesome. It was nice to get to know him better and have him find something he needed. Because he chose Hannah was pretty much the reason I liked her. He had tons of depth and was just amazing. Their chemistry was pretty good too...fun reading.
Some of the story seemed a little to drawn out while other parts felt rushed. I really think the horror that was Calvin should have been uncovered sooner and drawn out a bit more. The same with everything that happened to William. It was so fun to read about Aria and Braith as well. It just couldn't compare to Salvation because that story was a long time coming with an epic ending. That being said, I still stayed up way too late to finish this and was immersed the whole way through. Overall I am so happy we get to continue in their world because I really could read stories about them for forever. Yay!!
I love this series and was waiting for Redemption. It did not disappoint.
For those who haven’t read the earlier books, the series is set in a world where Vampires and Humans live side by side openly. The ruling family are vampires, but a recent revolution has seen the sadistic king overthrown by his son Braith, who has abolished the laws repressing humans and married Aria, who used to be human.
Redemption tells the story of Jack, or Jericho, Braith’s younger brother. In this book we see Jack in a new way, through the eyes of Hannah, a girl who lives and works in a bar in a small town far from the Palace.
As Jack and Hannah give in to their magnetic attraction to each other and begin a tentative romance, they are plagued by Calvin, the law enforcing bully who has set himself up as the strongest man in town and has his sights firmly on Hannah. A testosterone fuelled standoff takes place between the two male vampires, with the stakes rising each time they clash. When Braith and Aria make a surprise visit, they discover Calvin has hidden secrets and the conflict passes the point of no return.
I love the characters in this book. Erica Stevens has a wonderful ability to write irresistible characters and she worked her magic again in Redemption. Jack is fabulously charismatic and absorbing, and though Hannah is a vampire, she is a normal girl doing her best under difficult circumstances. Calvin is also wonderfully creepy and brings a chilling shadow into the town and the book.
Redemption was just the compulsive read I was looking for and I can’t wait for the next instalment in the family saga!
I loved this novel and the chance to revisit some characters I thoroughly enjoyed meeting in previous books in the series and learning more about Jack.
This book picks up about a year after book four left off with Jack traveling throughout the country to make sure that his brother's laws are being enforced. He is using this excuse as a means of escaping his grief and it isn't until he arrives in an isolated town that he finds purpose and a reason to move beyond the grief he felt after his father-figure and mentor dies. He meets Hannah and feels an almost immediate connection to her. She is reserved around him, however, as she and many other vampires living in the town are considered defective in one way or another. They keep to themselves and don't trust that Jack, and the king's laws, will protect them from further persecution. However, they are being ruled by a tyrant that controls the town and, when Jack steps in to help, others, including Hannah, begin to trust him.
There is plenty of action and romance in this book with characters that the reader can relate to. Stevens also writes with enough humor to temper the darker sides of the plot. I wouldn't mind seeing a book 6 in The Captive Series.
Ok, so I gave this book 5 stars because I just LOVE the characters. There's something so dynamic about Erica Stevens vampires. They fall in love quickly and forcefully and gosh(!), I don't know one human who's had a rabid relationship such as her characters (not that I wouldn't want one myself-wink wink). Introducing Hannah to the story was a little bit of a rocky start. Sure she's young and she's got mixed feelings but it just seemed prosaic. Why can't someone write characters who know what they want even if they have little to no experience, huh? However, Hannah redeemed herself as the awkward youngling to the sexy woman she was supposed to be albeit a little shy. Now Jack. Oh Jack. That is one sexy beast! He exuded strength and dominance that can melt the heart of most any woman. I guess that's why his character is so loved. His royal attitude, you'd think, would scare off his love interest considering she's so naïve but it worked. I'm glad Braith and Aria were added to the story as well. It's always good to reintroduce your favorite characters and know more about them besides "they lived happily ever after." Can't wait for another book to be published because I know there's going to be one. I'm a forever fan of these books.
TOTAL SERIES HANGOVER! There's no way you can NOT fall in love with these characters. Jack & William stumble into the Island of Misfit Toys and it turns out to be the Garden if Eden. I can't wait for more!
I’m finally finishing up one of my favorite vampire series and although I LOVED books 1-4 this one fell flat for me. I enjoyed seeing everyone from past books again and meeting new characters. But I found myself skimming a lot which is never a good sign. I still love this series though and plan on continuing with the next book which I’m very excited about because William has always been one of the best characters. 3.5 Stars!
Audiobook is well narrated. I felt a bit bored on the storyline. It honestly seemed like the author kept repeating things as in trying to make you believe something that you already knew because you just read/heard it. The story finally picked up halfway into the book. This may actually be a set up book for additional stories and people in the future.
I loved Jack and was excited to see him get his own book. While I liked it, I didn't find the love story as engaging as Braith and Aria's. I still loved Jack and Hannah as a couple. The ending was very good and even though I know how things turn out with William that scene was hard to read.
Although I did end up enjoying it I did find the theme of bloodlink a bit repetitive from the previous books. Nearly DNF but found the ending to pick up again so did end up finishing eventually

this is the 5th book in The Captive series, and i would recommend that you read those first, HOWEVER, this is written as a stand alone, follow on, and it is not really necessary. i just think it would help!
Jack, Braith's younger brother, is still with the Rebels, although now they are visiting the outlaying towns and villages to ensure that Braith's laws are being followed, with the abolution of blood slaves. some are not taking the new laws so well. Hannah is an inn keeper in such a town, but this town is putting on a front, with a leader who SAYS he is abiding by the new laws but isnt wuite. Calvin has his sights set on Hannah, ut Jack's reaction to Hannah makes him bring his plan fast forward and everyone lives are at stake. Also the town is keeping a secret, one that Hannah fears could force Jack away, and leave her in Calvin's sadistic hands.
i will be honest, i didnt write reviews for the other 4 books, but rated them all 4 stars, and i did think i might struggle to remember the story, but I didnt! Its laid out with enough information to bring it all forward, and then some, but not in a retelling sort of way, its all very well written, so you get Jack's story, with Braith and Aria popping in for some time too!
i loved the interaction between Hannah and Jack in the beginning, well ll through, but especially in the beginning as they both have no clue whats going on between them, and once Jack bites Hannah, there is no way either can fight it. Jack's discovery of Hannah's secret (so not saying!) is a good one, and Hannah's reaction to Jack's reaction, or lack thereof, made me smile.
i starred this 4, but i'm upgrading to 5. its all wrapped up in this single book, and thats why. but i would love to see what William, Aria's twin brother gets up to now he....well, again....so not saying!
I loved this book so much and I am so happy to read about all my favorite people from the Captive series. I love Jack even more then before, how he acts with Hannah is so romantic, primal, loving, and so not what he thought he wanted for his future. I love Hannah, she is strong, loyal, loving, and protective and the connection she has with Jack right away is great. I enjoyed meeting new characters and learning about the so called "Undesirables". Calvin is such an evil man, he dominates everyone around him, he has made them all feel like they are nothing and others would hate them outside of their town. It is great when Jack and William show up in this town and finally Calvin has some opposition. I loved what happened between Jack and Hannah and thought it was so funny how now he can relate to his brother Braith. Then one of the best things happens in the story and I get to enjoy all of the things I loved from the prior books in this series. There is all kind of drama, action, heartache, worry, joy, and undeniable love in this book and how it ends might lead one to think there could be more in the future. This author has done it again and even though it has been quite awhile she the last book it was like I never forgot this story, how I felt about the characters, and her writing was just as good as ever.
I was excited to see that there was another story featuring Jack once I finished the first four books in The Captive series. I found Redemption to be an enjoyable, almost self-contained read. It was a lot easier to understand and relate to Jack’s character after reading the first four books in the series but I’d say this story could be read as a standalone. Jack was an intriguing character and it was interesting to learn more about his past and how he ended up fighting for the rebels during the war. I could understand his grief about losing David after realising that David was the first person who ever really gave him a chance to be himself. Hannah was also a really great character and I enjoyed getting to see her regain her hopes for a better life, beyond the town and the label of ‘Undesirable’ she had lived with her whole life. The whole storyline had a bit of a wild western feel to it - from the tavern setting, to the small-time town ruler being challenged by to lawmen - all that was missing were tumbleweeds and a one-on-one showdown at sunset. It was easy to read and I enjoyed the story. I’d recommend picking this series up if you’re looking for a good young-adult paranormal romance read with vampires in it, or if you’ve read the first four books and are curious about Jack’s character.
I absolutely loved the Captive Series by Erica Stevens and I was so excited to hear Jack was getting his own story. It may have taken awhile but the wait was worth it!
Jack needed some happiness after his conflicts with the war and his family drama. Although content with how things turned out, he was still grieving for all that was lost to get to that point. I wanted to reach in and comfort him on a couple of occasions...in more ways than one. *wink*
I loved not only Jack's POV in the story, but also the flashbacks to when Jack first met David, Aria, William and the other human rebels. It made me warm up to him even more and definitely gave you a better perspective of where Jack was coming from in the Captive Series previous books.
Erica introduces us to some new characters in Redemption. Some you will love and some you will HATE! The way Erica can mix romance with suspense, action and gore is AMAZING, but what unfolds is something I don't think any of us saw coming!
This was my least favorite book of the Captive series. I felt the antagonist was a weak and his story a bit of a yawner. I was looking for a twist on his character that would surprise me but I was disappointed Sigh.
These books straddles modern and old tech in a disconnected way. There are no cars but there are zippers. There are no guns but there are disposable blood donation bags etc. I had trouble finding any continuity for what was gone and what remained from modern technology.
Overall, I felt like this story played it too safe compared to the other books. Still it has been a fun series to read. I am looking forward to the next book.
I had read the first four books in the series and loved them. When I saw this book not being about Aria and Braith I didn't really want to read it, because I had grown to love their stories. I'm glad I finally got to read Jack's story! The details that were given made me feel apart of the story, like I was actually there! I could not put the book down.
When Aria screamed when William died, I felt the pain and the sorrow she felt. The writing brought everything to life and I felt like I knew these people! I actually shed a tear or two.
I've read the four previous books about four or five times, now when I re-read them this will absolutely be included.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book! You won't regret it!
Great job to the author, you have another loyal reader!
