Lady Darby Mysteries #13

A Tarnished Canvas

Rate this book
Lady Kiera Darby had planned to spend the winter practicing her painting, but instead, she must find the flaw in a killer’s masterpiece when an art auction results in one participant’s final bid.…

March 1833. Kiera and her husband, Sebastian Gage, have decided to settle in Edinburgh for the winter with their infant daughter. This also allows Kiera to enjoy long hours painting in her studio, making progress on the portraits she soon hopes to unveil in her own exhibit. She’s thrilled when she receives an invitation to the auction of the late Lord Eldin’s coveted art collection, and she and Gage eagerly accept. When the floor collapses beneath the gathering, killing one of their fellow bidders, Kiera and Gage are lucky to escape with their lives.

Within days it becomes apparent that what at first seemed to be a terrible accident is actually something far more nefarious. Someone deliberately compromised the integrity of the structure, though the police are unsure of the culprit’s aim. Sergeant Maclean requests Kiera and Gage’s assistance in figuring out who would wish to harm the bidders. As they dig deeper, it becomes increasingly apparent that the victim was not the killer’s intended target . . . and that Kiera was lured to the auction deliberately. Kiera and Gage must utilize all their resources to unveil a monster willing to risk the lives of dozens of bystanders to achieve their ends. But they’re on the verge of making a dire miscalculation. For one of the cleverest tricks in a painter’s repertoire is the art of misdirection, and their eyes have been drawn far from the gravest danger.

When Kiera and Gage attend an art sale of a recently deceased collector, the floor collapses and they, along with other attendees, are injured. Was it shoddy building materials, or was sabotage involved? Considering revenge or theft as possible motives, they investigate and work with the police to ascertain what happened. There are several suspects, and they find they need the help of famed Edinburgh criminal Bonnie Brock Kincaid to help solve the mystery. Kiera is also considering showing her paintings and preparing for her daughter's first birthday. A well written novel set in Edinburgh in the Bridgerton time period but with more mystery and less spice, A Tarnished Canvas is readable as a stand-alone, but much better if read in sequence. Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the ARC.

Apparently not only does Huber get paid extra to frequently remind us of peoples' hair colors, and to constantly describe exactly what Kiera is wearing, she also gets some sort of bonus for describing all the furniture. There is one scene where every piece of furniture in the room is described - -the different chairs, upholstery on the settee, the tables. I kid you not. Hell, there's even a scene where we have to know that the drapes being closed are olive green. Sigh..

And then there's baby Emma who is one of the most unbelievable children in recent literature. The perfect baby, with constant references,of course,to her golden curls. And with that nanny there 24/7 to take care of her, if she does have stinky diapers or temper tantrums or teething pains it can happen conveniently off stage.

As for the plot it builds to a climax and then falls flat on its face with an abrupt ending .It adds insult to injury by taking place off stage. Cue the happy ending, though Huber leaves us on another "had I but known of what was to come," that lets us know that book 14 will be arriving eventually. And I'll read it when it comes out, but this will never be a series I wait for with great anticipation of anything but more of the same.

A Tarnished Canvas is the 13th book in a series best read in order.

A quick rundown of the series:
Kiera, Darby is a woman ostracized by society when it’s found out her late husband had her sketch the dead bodies (obtained from questionable sources) he dissected for an anatomy journal he planned on publishing. Kiera had no knowledge of this at the time, but she couldn’t refuse with her husband forcing her to comply. He was an awful man, so I was happy he died before we’re introduced to Kiera.

With the knowledge of anatomy she acquired, and her superb deductive skills, Kiera’s a valuable source of information to Gage, an inquiry agent tasked to solve a murder while staying at her sister’s estate (book 1). Gage and Kiera initially lock horns.

Each installment tackles a new mystery, while at the center of the series is the relationship/romance between Kiera and Gage. Ms. Huber masterfully created two wonderfully complex characters, faults and all, so of course their journey isn’t all smooth sailing, but I’ve loved every minute!

In A Tarnished Canvas Kiera and Gage are wintering in Edinburgh, preparing for their daughter Emma’s first birthday, which holds both joyful and traumatic memories. While Kiera is immersed in her art, painting pieces for an exhibition she hopes to display, Gage is at loose ends with no major cases coming their way.

One bright spot is an art auction Kiera’s been invited to. However, the event is overcrowded, and the floor gives out injuring many and killing one. Kiera and Gage barely make it out alive. Was it an accident or sabotage?

When it becomes clear the collapse was purposeful, the police ask for Gage and Kiera’s assistance in finding the culprit and their motivation.

As usual, I was completely captivated as the mystery was unraveled piece by piece! Kiera and Gage’s relationship, as well as their friendships with a few of their servants, who also help with the investigations, are a huge draw for me. Emma continues to be adorable and the sweet baby moments between mother and child are touching!

The mystery comes to a thrilling and satisfying conclusion, but Kiera’s last words have me eager for the next installment!

I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy courtesy of the publisher. These are my thoughts and opinions.

1833 Edinburgh, Scotland

I love that the cover and inside pages shed light on Sebastian and Kiera's home life. They are spending March in Edinburg with their almost one year old daughter. It's a time for Kiera (Lady Darby) to focus on her painting and Sebastian (Gage) to be...restless. They visit an exclusive auction and the floor collapses beneath them. Nearly 100 attendees plummet to the floor below. Was it an accident or did someone compromise the building on purpose? The husband and wife team along with servants and family members work to solve the mystery.

Such a lovely series and I'm so glad it continuing.

My gratitude to Berkley Publishing Group for a complimentary NetGalley copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

After the run of really good installments in this series , this one felt like a bit of a crash.

I could not really stay engaged in the story because I didn't find the mystery that intriguing.

But even more the writing for this one felt odd. It was repetitive, overly explanatory of persons and events that happened in prior books, and extra descriptive of every room and outfit. I know Keira has an artists' eye and sees detail but it felt belabored. Simply too much exposition for a first person POV narrator. It has the effect of her explaining stuff that she already knows to herself.

As a result we'd get phrases like this: “It made me feel that in some way my mother—Emma’s grandmother—was with us in spirit.” Well, yeah we can work out the relationship, no need to spell it out.

There were a few bright spots. Bonnie Brock of course brought dangerous energy into every scene he was in. I am enjoying the inclusion of Henry in these books and actually would like to see more of his sibling make an appearance.

But overall this one was a dud for me.

Lady Darby books are my most anticipated rates every single year. I know I’m going to see favorite characters and get a meticulously researched historical mystery.

Keira and Gage are finally back in Edinburgh and that means we see Kiera's sister and her family plus the ever delightful Bonnie Brock. The Gauge household is as wonderful as ever with baby Emma stealing scenes left and right. There’s some lovely insight into the relationship between Bree and Anderly, too.

The mystery is actually tied to a real event, a building collapse. Keira and Gage attend an art auction and are injured when the floor collapses. They investigate to find out who is behind the sabotage that led to the collapse and hopefully stop them from doing it again.

Anna Lee Hubert is one of the most consistent writers that I read. Her books are like comfort reads, even when they’re dealing with death and destruction.

While these stopped being truly great several books ago, I still enjoy them. They're fun. Huber takes a real historical event and twists it into an entertaining mystery. This 13th book follows Kiera and Sebastian Gage as they try to determine how or why a floor collapsed during an art auction they were attending. I'll keep reading this series despite lowered expectations.

When one wants interesting historical details and settings, nuanced characters, and a mystery plot that doesn’t give up the answers easily, look no further than the talented pen of Anna Lee Huber.

A Tarnished Canvas extends the Lady Darby mysteries to the thirteenth installment and remains fresh and engaging for long-time fans or for those just discovering the early Victorian era series about a female artist who once lived a macabre life with her first husband, but now shares a loving partnership with her husband Gage, a professional inquiry agent.

After recent escapades among Gage’s relations in Cornwall, Kiera, Gage, and their retinue return to their home in Scotland for a time of peaceful doings. Gage is between cases, but Kiera occupies herself with preparing her work for a show, finishing some commissions, and her family. Then, an unlooked-for invitation to an art auction leads to a horrific accident when the floor gives way and the pair are injured, but at least alive.
However, it wasn’t an accident and now they, along with their investigating assistants, including crime lord Bonnie Brock must get to the truth of the matter because there are strong hints that Kiera might have been the target.

A Tarnished Canvas was centered around a real-life event of a floor collapsing and kudos to Anna Lee Huber for working this event and so many period details and descriptions into her story. At times, the historical element is firmly at the forefront as are the relationship developments particularly between her maid and Gage’s manservant slowing the story down a bit- not that I minded much. Bonnie Brock is the spice of life whenever he appears and unsettles matters. The last third of the book kicked it up a notch and left me wide-eyed from the conclusion- which yes, as usual hints at a new mystery hovering on the horizon for the next book.

Heather Wild has been a long familiar and enjoyed voice of the series. She draws listeners in quickly to the story and deepens the connection to the well-loved characters with her distinctions for each one.

There are enough details for historical mystery lovers to dive into A Tarnished Canvas and try out Anna Lee Huber’s work, but I strongly recommend getting the series from the beginning so that all their character and relationship growth- along with those stellar mysteries are not missed.

I really enjoyed being back with these characters. By now they feel so familiar, and that’s always the best part of the series. But I have to admit the mystery didn’t thrill me this time. It felt a bit too obvious, and when Bonnie basically pointed us in the right direction straight away, it took away the suspense.

What I did like was seeing the author continue to drop hints for the bigger arcs. Trevor and his potential romance are just starting to take shape, Bonnie Brock himself adds such a messy, intriguing layer (I’m not sure I love the kind of influence he’s having on Kiera, but it’s definitely keeping things interesting), and Bree and Anderley seem to have more in store too.

So while I wouldn’t call A Tarnished Canvas the strongest book in the series, it’s one that keeps the overall story moving forward. For me, it was less about the case itself and more about those ongoing threads: that’s what makes me want to keep reading.

Another engaging and clever mystery with these beloved characters! 13 books (and 2 novellas) in and I appreciate how I am still learning about these characters. The mystery has an interesting basis in a historical event and has the atmospheric, bustling setting of Edinburgh. Of course, I am ALL HERE for the romance thread that continues to play out. I love that this series continues to be equally plot and character-driven. This one has a particularly poignant scene that further reveals the intellectual kinship between Kiera and Gage that I highlighted like crazy. :)

I was a little disappointed

Starting with the positive, the crime and the mystery surrounding it are actually quite clever. It is certainly nothing that I have seen before in a many historical mysteries that I’ve read. Kudos to the author for a fresh take on the criminal mind.

The book was not as sharp as I recall the first two books of the series being. I know that context has to be provided regarding things from the past so that readers are reminded of significant events that have bearing on the present story. However, I felt that much of the context (backstory) in terms of the previous books was repetitive and sounded almost like it had been cut and pasted.

I have grown weary of hearing about Keira and her family’s lapis lazuli eyes. I never mind hearing about the color or cut of clothes a character is wearing as it presents a mental image for me to focus on. However, I felt that the details went far beyond what was necessary and it felt very much like fluff/info dump. I know that for at least two books we have heard about the ridiculous width of sleeves that were in fashion… But I don’t see how this gets the reader any closer to the heart of the mystery unless the sleeve creates a problem of some note.

I find it commendable that the author provides a sense of self-reflection for the main characters, to better understand the situations they face based on gender, social standing, the difficulties of the servant class, etc., whether that reflection comes from main character or if she conducts conversation to provide said reflection.

I think the writing could’ve been a little tighter and that less detail in some situations would have been better.

Nice that Brock is still in the story, but for all Keira says that she is totally devoted to Gage, I don’t understand her propensity to poke the bear (Bonnie Brock) when she knows how he keeps score and expects payment for his favors. You can make that determination yourself, but it feels like she’s playing games with Brock, that some might look at as a light flirtation, but which aggravates me in the face of how the author presents Gage as such a devoted, loving, and protective husband. She won’t kiss Brock but pays close attention to his physical attributes…and even Gage has warned her to be careful.

For as intuitive as several people mention she is, it seems contrary to her character that she doesn’t simply keep Brock at arm’s length. Instead, when he visits her alone, she notes that she almost expected him to show up. And at one point when asking for help, she makes a statement that is described as “throwing down the gauntlet,“ knowing that he will take the “bait.“ I am not crazy about this aspect of Keira‘s character.

This is the 13th installment of the Lady Darby Mysteries and if you haven't read the first 12, I'd encourage you to go back and read them. You could probably read this as a standalone as the mystery is a new one each time but you definitely miss out on the personal stories which make up a good portion of the books - whether that is with Sebastian and Kiera or all the secondary characters that help move the stories along.

In this book, Kiera and Sebastian are in Edinburgh for the winter with their daughter who is just about to turn one. This is giving Kiera plenty of time to paint the portraits she hopes to exhibit and help her sister plan her daughter's first birthday. It's also leaving Sebastian a bit at loose ends...without a case he doesn't really know what to do with himself so when Kiera receives an invitation to the auction of the late Lord Eldin's art collection, they eagerly accept. What they didn't plan was that the floor would collapse under their feet, making them lucky to escape with their lives and wondering whether the collapse was an accident or actually something more sinister.

As the days go by and they continue to heal, Sebastian and Kiera receive a visit from Sergeant Maclean who informs them that the collapse was, in fact, deliberate and he asks for their help to figure out who would want to harm the bidders. As they dig deeper though, it turns out that the man who died wasn't actually the intended victim and Kiera actually wasn't truly invited to the auction so now there's the question around whether it was her that was the target and whether she is still in danger. As Kiera, Sebastian and their normal group of friends (and foes) work to figure out what is going on and why, they also continue to navigate the challenges of their pasts.

Huber did a fantastic job in this book of continuing to build on the relationship between Sebastian and Kiera. I also thought the relationship development between Bree and Anderley was done well - the way Huber had Bree articulate her feelings and concerns to Kiera made sense. I love continuing to see the engagement with Kiera's brother and sister and am excited to see where the next book in the series is headed.

If you're looking for historical mystery books and you haven't picked up this series yet, I think you're missing out. I'll continue reading these for as long as Huber keeps writing them.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the copy in exchange for an honest review.

1.5 stars rounded up

I'm still on site if I should round it up or not because this book feels more like a one star than 2.

I understand that this is the 13th instalment in the series, however, I do not think that we should spend a third of the book recapping on what happened in the previous 12 books. If anyone has any interested in that they should read the entire series. Considering I have already read the series I do not want to rehash every single book.

Then almost 2/3 of this book are spent talking about personal drama and inner thoughts in a very repetitive way. Lady Darby, who is setting up to have an exhibition, constantly reiterates her fears, concerns, doubts about how her work might be not well received.
Then we keep getting reminded about the fact that the exhibition will contain portraits of regular people who everybody disregards.

And then, if this drama was not enough, then we have the servants drama. Why they are getting along or not getting along if they see any future why they don't see any future and so.

The mystery is a topic of conversation in this book for about a maximum of 1/10 of the entire length of the book. It takes forever for something to happen and then literally nothing happened and nothing. It's actually revealed through the very end.

Also, the end is extremely rushed and anti-climatic. It has the same feeling as being in class, the bell rang and the the exam had to be given in, so one is in a rush to write the last few sentences to wrap it up.

I sure hope the next one is gonna be come considerably better.

I loved this book, focused on Kiera's art and art in general. It's so heartwarming how much Kiera and Sebastian love each other and their daughter, in the midst of the mystery and drama. A page-turning must read for lovers of mystery and history and art and this wonderful series.

13 books in and still enjoying it! This one has a floor collapse at an art auction. Suspicious or accidental? Sergeant Maclean requests the help of the Gage's for the first time since their fallout. At the same time Kiera is preparing her paintings for the show she hopes to hold and getting ready for her daughters 1st birthday which is a huge celebration. Bonnie Brock makes a few appearances again in this one which was fun.

I like this series, there isn't much else to say at this point.

"A Tarnished Canvas" is a mystery set in 1833 in Scotland. It is the 13th book in a series. It can be read as a standalone and didn't spoil previous mysteries. The main characters were complex, well-developed, and acted realistically. I enjoyed reading about them. A main part of the story was how Gage felt like he had to be useful to be lovable and Kiera feared the criticism that she knew she'd get for the subject matter of her latest paintings.

Overall, the story felt historically accurate and brought out some interesting details about the time period. Kiera, Sebastian, and their servants investigated the floor collapse. They uncovered clues and followed up on them. It was clear that the one man who died couldn't have been the target since nearly a hundred people were injured. So why sabotage the floor and who was involved? I was frustrated that they believed that the collapse was not targeted at a single person yet kept investigating who the intended target was like there was one. They're experienced investigators but were easily side-tracked, not following up on certain clues or asking certain questions that I felt they should have asked sooner. But I guess if they had then the mystery would have been solved too easily.

There were no sex scenes or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this mystery to fans of the series.

I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

I have read every book by this author, including this one. This is number thirteen , and not my favorite. I still enjoy keeping up with the characters though. I felt this one was not an exciting murder mystery, since it happened at the beginning of the book. The rest of the mystery was helped along with Bonnie Brock , who shows up out of no where, and gives information to Keira. I enjoyed learning more about baby Emma, and her maid, and friend, who is in love with Gaige’s valet, and his side man of business , in their inquiry agency. The crime is at a private showing of an art collection. Keira is an excellent artist, and gets an invitation. The entire floor collapses, sending 100 people downward. One man dies, and many are hurt including our main characters. It is thought to be an accident, yet after being inspected, the main joints were cut deep, so as the wight increased, by the crowd the floor gave way. It was murder. Ms. Huber likes to form her stories around true events. She just changes them up a bit. This one moves at a slower pace with lots of information, and detailed descriptions of furniture, her dresses, and some of it almost comes across as if she is rethinking about things she already knows. I’m not sure if it was just filler, but it was used more often in this book. The ending tied things up , but most of us knew who was at fault before we got near the end. I will always read these books. It is more than a murder mystery. It is about an abused wife, people who turned on her , for no fault of her own, and her meeting the love of her life, looking into crime with him, since she has an eye for details. Marriage, and now being a mother. You should read these in order to. I have it 3 stars.

Part of me wanted to give this fewer stars because of Kiera’s not so secret admirer tries to play his hand. Not because Bonnie Brock actually tried, but because Kiera didn’t tell Gage. Look, I can appreciate Kiera not standing up to Bonnie Brock due to her past with her former husband and the aggressive way he seemed to want to “take what was his,” but why wouldn’t you discuss this with Gage? Now it’s going to look horrible when or if Gage learns about it. I don’t know, all of this is setting up rough waters for Gage and Kiera. Gage is already frustrated with Bonnie Brock and the rogue/criminal’s eye for his wife, I just wish they would speak plainly about it. Can you tell I don’t really care for love triangles? And then for Bonnie Brock to not see how out of sorts he made Kiera when he made his advances, it seemed a bit out of character for him to think Kiera would go along with it.

The reason why I didn’t reduce the rating is how much I enjoyed having Henry and Kiera’s brother, Trevor, as well as seeing how not only Anderley and Bree involved, but Mrs McKay and Jeffers helping with the investigation. I am so sad about where Anderley and Bree’s relationship is sitting undecided. How awful it must have been at that time to have to make that choice. Bree actually is being afforded some really great opportunities because she is working for Kiera, but at some point the societal expectations and norms at that time really limit just how much leeway they are given. It would not be acceptable for any offspring of Bree and Anderley to be raised along side the Gage’s children. Sigh, what an impossible situation. And Bree was right, Anderley doesn’t understand because his life would go on as it is, Bree would be the one making all of the concessions.

Another wonderful installment, now waiting another year for the next!

A consistently enjoyable series. In this one, Kiera and Sebastian are at a grand Edinburgh home for an estate auction. The deceased was known as a collector of major art and there are a number of pieces Kiera thinks she might be willing to bid on. And then the floor collapses below them.

As they are asked to look into things, it becomes clear there's more going on than meets the eye. They get conflicting stories about who ordered the sale and how it was arranged. The police are insisting publicly that it was an accident -- even as they have evidence of some sort of sabotage. Kiera and Gage begin to suspect something more and look for evidence of theft, as well as trying to dig into WHY they had an invitation to the event at all.

Meanwhile, their daughter is about to turn 1, and their valet and maid are still working out their relationship and what that means for all of them.

This one was a little more complex, I thought. Lots of things going on that feel like they must all be connected, but there are a number of red herrings. In the end, though it all hung together well. I'll definitely watch for the next in the series.

It had such an exciting start, I love the taste of danger. Especially danger that was not a result from their investigation, Gage and Kiera are so close and protective of each other. Total couple goals. I wish we had more time between them and their family, I wish Emma's birthday party was a bigger deal and we got to spend more time with the cousins.

The mystery was okay, I did like most of it but by the time the culprit was caught I was no longer very interested. But then again, I'm here for the characters. I did like Bonny Brock and the amount of screen time he got in this one, I feel like its been a long while since we got to see him. The books set in the City are always my favorite.

The next book sound very interesting, based off the last sentence, I am a big fan of Kiera's brother and am excited that the next one seems to have a focus on him.

This is a very satisfying series. It has a strong but vulnerable heroine who is smart & talented. She is surrounded by a varied cast of very entertaining characters who work with her & husband to solve inquiries. There are great historical details & the Edinburgh setting is fascinating. As Kiera prepares an unusual set of paintings to exhibit, she is invited to an art auction where a tragedy occurs that involves more than meets the eye. As the situation becomes more complicated, their lives may be in danger.

well crafted historical mystery

The narrative draws the reader/listener into the story. The first question that came into my mind was is Lady Darby, the target of assassination attempt? Once that’s resolved the reader/listener is drawn into a 19th century terrorism plot. I will admit that I was unable to solve the mystery before the culprit was revealed. However, that doesn’t matter since by that time I was drawn into the story. This book is an excellent edition to my library of Lady Darby mysteries. I am eagerly awaiting the next in the series.

A near death experience at an art auction leaves several injured, one dead, and the question begging to be asked, "Was is really an accident?".

Another cozy read in the series! Not as gripping as the earlier books in the series, but easy enough for the genre.

It might be me, but am I the only one that sees the potential between Brock and Keira??!!! It really contrasts him and Gage, her husband. One is selfish and the other is selfless....I personally would fold so fast if I had a handsome Scot telling me "no one hurts what's mine"....and he's the leader of gang reminiscent of Robin Hood and his Merry Men??? Like, come on!

A disaster at an estate auction sends Gage and Kiera their next case. Police found that a joist had been tampered with that caused a floor to cave in. A number of suspects sends the investigators in different directions, keeping the reader guessing throughout the story. Threats, suspense, and intrigue move this book to its final conclusion. Although tedious at times, Huber brings this story to a satisfactory ending and closes with some hints about the next book to come.

A great mystery, but with just a bit too slow a pace until the last 30 pages or so. This series is always well written but in this entry the author spends a bit too much time on emotional issues and that makes the actual mystery drag a little. That said, Huber's books are always worth the time because of the interesting characters and excellent historical background.
