For too long, the planet Stewart, the ancestral home of one of the oldest dynasties of the Free Worlds League, has remained in the clutches of Clan Wolf, locked behind a mutual nonaggression pact between the Wolf Empire and the League. But the Wolves have unexpectedly abandoned much of their territory, leaving many systems ripe for the taking.
The news of the Wolf Empire’s poorly defended border spurs Count Gavin Stewart and the Silver Hawk Irregulars to take back his family’s homeland while the Wolves are away, but his invasion threatens to destabilize the entire region. Recognizing the long-term danger, Captain Trenton Marik, Gavin’s longtime friend, must travel to Stewart and convince Gavin and the Irregulars to withdraw before the Wolves return home in force and strike back.
But rumors of a conqueror claiming Terra—an ilClan, which demands all Clans bend the knee—stir up divided loyalties within the League’s Clan Protectorate province, and the Protectorate’s warriors must choose between fealty to the League or obedience to the ilClan. And the best path to proving their loyalty is to swiftly punish all who would dare invade the Wolf Empire…
Unfortunately when we write ourselves into a corner sometimes there is no escape..... All the "woke" new writers have ruined the 35+ years of Battletech..!!!!! Even this book has no where to go. Microsoft pretty much destroyed the series with the "Dark Ages". Gates bought and neutered the series disarming the inner sphere like he would the Earth..... Sad as it is as an owner of every book and every video game since 1993 this series will eventually die. Not because it should, but because its most its edge. Breaks me spirit to write this, but if you are really a Battletech fan, you feel it coming. Were not breaking new ground, were looking to fill in tiny spots. Filling spaces with stories that will never become legend like Wolf Dragoons. Get rid of the weakness of "woke" authors. ...... Return to the ideals that let Battletech run for 35+ years. Quiaff?
This book got me back into the modern fiction. The characters are relatable, and the premise is pretty good.
It’s more fighting than plot, which is why I only give it 4 stars. I would have liked a deeper look at the cultures involved, but this was a book designed to move major plot points forward. It’s overall well done.
I enjoyed this one, lots of politics - but that includes some sign of big 'story arc' movement - and some nicely realized battlemech battles. I did wonder why nearly all of the inner sphere mechs were 'classic' designs though?
Honestly my biggest complaint about ths book it wastes the readers time. How the universe is at the beginning the universe is pretty much the same at the end. The journey is not really worth the time. Is it better than most of the other novels from the current batch of writers yes, but we havent had many good books lately.
