This is the second time I’ve read this nourishing little book. I struggle with anxiety, and now I’ve added a little depression to that (a little numbness, but mostly grief and melancholy). One of my pastors wisely counseled me to re-read this book, and I’m so thankful he did. When I finished, I genuinely considered just constantly reading it, especially the last half, every day just read one small section. The third part about how God uses affliction, humbling ourselves under the trials and tribulations he brings, and trusting his raising up fed my soul. Everyone should read it even if you don’t struggle with anxiety and depression. It will help you help us who do. You will better understand the generational differences, the medical and therapy boundaries, and God’s goodness. You will be lifted up by the beatific vision. The instruction and encouragement on the use of the Lord’s Super was also helpful. The sad part is that this book is hard to find. Those of us fortunate enough to own a copy are going to be tempted to horde them.

First book of 2025 ✔️ and what an great one. I will be certainly recommending this one to friends as the struggle with anxiety and depression is so pervasive in this day and age. I was so helped - and convicted - by the practical, pastoral advice for dealing with anxiety and left so so encouraged by his exposition of what it means that “God will lift you up.” This book gave me much to think and meditate upon and ultimately exhorted me to set my eyes on Him. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

EXCELLENT book on dealing with anxiety, affliction, and depression. Pastor Renihan divides his book into two parts—First, The Hope That Is in You, focusing on the reasons and some practical solutions for anxiety and depression; and then second, The Mighty Hand of God, focusing on God’s purposes for allowing affliction (leading to anxiety and depression) in our lives, and pointing to the hope and guarantee of God’s promise to ultimately lift us up and make all things new.

I really enjoyed this book. It was very practical. I love the clear distinction regarding the fact that we are made up of both body and soul and then Renihan’s Biblical approach to identifying and addressing anxiety and afflictions as it pertains to the soul.

This book is worth its weight in gold in Part 2: The Mighty Hand of God and his exposition of 1 Peter 5:5-7.
