‘Stonewitch’ delivers the perfect blend of comfort reading and engaging storytelling in this penultimate volume of the ‘Hedgewitch’ series.

McKenna’s love of folklore and the natural world shine from every page and her masterful touches allow the reader to truly experience the power and beauty of the ancient histories and mythology of the British Isles.

I may yet be proved wrong, but I feel that the final volume to come, ‘Queen’s Witch,’ will be the strongest yet and provide a stunning climax (with some surprises) to this brilliant series.

'Stonewitch' transports us to the Scottish Highlands, where witches from across Britain and Ireland are competing in the Covenmoot Games! The Oak Patrol witches are determined bring home the coveted Covenmoot Cauldron, but it soon becomes clear that something (or someone) is terrorising the Moors. Can Cassie and her friends set aside their differences, and overcome their personal challenges, to defeat the dark forces at play?

The 'Hedgewitch' series has long been a favourite of mine, so my hopes for this fourth instalment were high. Happily, I can confirm that 'Stonewitch' delivers all of the cosy, magical adventure that Skye McKenna is so good at conjuring! A truly enjoyable read, complete with stunning illustrations, 'Stonewitch' is as wise as it is warm. Heavier plot points are perfectly balanced with well-placed elements of whimsy and a delightful system of magic.

Out on September 25th 2025, 'Stonewitch' is a five-star middle-grade fantasy, not to be missed by anyone who enjoys the comfort of cosy, magical adventures.

Thank you to Hachette Australia for gifting me an early copy of 'Stonewitch' for review. It was absolutely enchanting.

“We all tell lies from time to time, sometimes with good intentions. Yet to be constantly aware of the falseness of our fellow humans, that would destroy one’s ability to trust.”

I love this series so damn much, is everything I’ve ever wanted: witches, cozy vibes, Scottish Highlands folklore and powerful middle aged women. I love you Miranda Morgan 😭😭

DNF at page 181. I persevered when Ivy just can't let go of this rivalry with Cassie and then they get to Covenmoot and we met Prunella who is just as bad then they are out in the field and a comment from a young witch "Imagine getting excited over a eemock" just pushed me over the edge and I had to stop reading. You are all young (approx 15 years old) witches and think you know more than centuries of other witches.

Outstanding fourth instalment of the Hedgewitch series, couldn’t put it down. Set in Scotland and following Cassie, Rue, Tabitha and Robin on the next stage of their journey as witches working towards their licence.
We also hear more about the overarching story in this series, as we find out more about Cassie’s mother and her involvement with the Erl King.
Fantastic scene setting, characters that are developing and evolving across the series, great storyline and storytelling, really looking forward to the next, and I believe last in this series.

You know what I absolutely adore, a series where, even on book four, I’m guessing what’s going to happen next, and that’s exactly what I spent the majority of Stonewitch doing. I have to say, I tend to adore third and fourth books of series as the foundations are laid and they’re always where the real fun, danger, and excitement take flight (pardon the pun) and Stonewitch was an absolutely joyous adventure in this wondrous world Skye McKenna has created.

Cassie’s plotline in this novel (don’t worry, I’m not going to give too much away), may be my favourite of hers yet. Not only is she advancing in her witch studies adding to the intensity, but she’s really finding her feet as an individual, although that doesn’t necessarily mean she always makes the right choices. I have a soft spot in my heart for Cassie Morgan and Stonewitch only amplified it further. Any fans of this series’ protagonist will be satisfied by her journey in this novel.

The SETTING! Oh my gosh, what a stunning backdrop for a novel. Skye McKenna is jumping us all around the UK with the series and it’s one breathtaking location after another. Taking us up into the Scottish Highlands was a genius move as, for starters, it’s completely different to any of the locations previously explored, but it means more of that Northern representation I continue to crave in Middle Grade fiction. With epic, gorgeous descriptions, again, I could make a strong case for this being my favourite setting of all four books.

It wouldn’t be a new Skye McKenna book without some fantastic new characters also. With the Covenmoot, we get introduced to a whole bundle in this novel, some friendly, others not so much, and some downright conniving and evil. I won’t say who’s who so as to avoid spoilers, but I do want to shout out Una. She’s headstrong, mysterious, somewhat enigmatic, and wherever her journey goes in the final book of the Hedgewitch series, I will be incredibly interested to see.

Almost the ideal segue, I became increasingly aware in my last hundred pages that I was about to finish the second to last novel in what has been a sensational series by Skye McKenna. Am I quite ready to be considering the end yet? No, not at all. Do I think Skye’s laid the groundwork for a blockbuster finale with Stonewitch? Yes, yes I do. I finished Stonewitch on the edge of my seat for the final novel, a state I believe all penultimate books should have you in, and I cannot wait to see how this series concludes in book five.

A brilliant back to school treat for any readers aged 9+ (and I’m including the adults here too), you simply must go and preorder Stonewitch. And whilst you do that, I’m off to seriously contemplate jumping in my car – ahem, I mean on my broom – and vanishing off to the highlands…

A mild case of witch's block as the result of an attempt to come up with an original spell, means that young Cassie is only too eager to take any opportunity for inspiration that comes her way. And fortunately for her, a truly magnificent chance comes in the form of the forthcoming competition between various covens in the British Isles, to take place in Scotland this year.

Held every 5 years, this is a series of challenges that puts witches through their paces. And what could be a more perfect hunting ground for Cassie to develop the perfect spell? Even if things don't go quite according to plan...

The latest book in the series will definitely be enjoyed by readers in the target group. It gets 3. 5 stars.

I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

Author Skye McKenna did NOT disappoint! Once again I dived right back into Cassie Morgan's world of witches, faeries and magic. The plot thickens as we get closer to the fifth and final volume, which I am so excited to read (I've already pre ordered it !)
Cassie and her coven mates never cease to amaze me, they make me discover so much about places in Britain and around I have not visited. They grow up together beautifully and make friends everywhere they go. It is also very sweet to see how the relationship between Cassie and her aunt Miranda has evolved.
This book was incredible, as were the previous ones.
