One speaks to the dead, the other talks to everyone else. Both have hearts that are whispering to each other’s.

Archimedes Kee has always had the gift. From his youngest days, he has been able to communicate with the dearly departed. Most of the time, they seek him as a way to correct wrongs or for help moving over to the next plane. Some just want to complain about badly written books. Generally, he does his best to aid the stranded spirits as he juggles working part-time at his grandfather’s bookstore, a job he adores, with attending a local college. Stuck in the grind of the day-to-day, he is totally unprepared for the arrival of Phil Kestrel, who blows into the shop like a hurricane with his blond hair, blue eyes, and unparalleled exuberance.

For the first time in forever, Archie can’t pull back into the protective shell he has learned to keep up. Phil is not only a charmingly sweet and sexy man, but he’s also slowly winning Archie’s heart one 80’s song at a time. After witnessing an unearthly book club meeting late one night the football star slash film major discovers Archie’s secret and proposes a plan. They make a ghost hunter show for extra credit and to bring much-needed foot traffic to the old bookstore. The plan has merit, so they seek out a local legend and face off against an anguished soul who puts their new bond to the test.

Kestrel and Kee - The Siren of Lake Killikee is an opposites attract queer paranormal romance starring a shy medium, a gregarious footballer, a resident bookstore specter with a decidedly wicked mind, one otherworldly feline, a small town filled with ghostly goings on, an elderly family member eager to play matchmaker, a haunted lake, and a spirited happy ending.

Arc Review:The Siren of Lake Killikee (Kestrel & Kee Paranormal Investigators #1 by V.L. Locey
MC: Archie & Phil 4⭐

“I’m no hero. I’m just some queer Asian dude who can talk to dead people.”

Tropes & tags
Jock/Tutor
Opposites attract
Paranormal with mystery element
Small-town setting
Found family vibes
Matchmaking elder
Haunted but cozy atmosphere
Resident ghost with attitude
Supernatural pet
Slow burn with sparks
Healing and acceptance
Spirited happy ending

So this is basically The Ghost Whisperer — but gay and good 😅

A low-angst, sweet paranormal romance with ghosts, laughter, and two absolute cinnamon rolls falling in love while chasing spirits 🫠

Set in a small town and centred around Archie Kee’s family bookstore, this story blends a gentle paranormal mystery with a slow-burn romance between Archie — a shy tutor and medium — and Phil Kestrel, the extroverted college jock who’s just too charming for his own good. It’s the perfect opposites attract setup: the reserved, anxious bookworm who sees ghosts, and the open-hearted athlete who falls first (and hardest).

I loved the found family feel throughout — Archie’s sweet, meddling grandpa totally deserves a “matchmaking elder” tag — and the haunted-but-cozy atmosphere is just irresistible. Between the smell of old books, the herb garden on the fire escape, and the family recipes floating around the kitchen, it feels like the kind of place you’d want to haunt yourself.

“We have a small apartment up there. Two bedrooms, one bath, a big living room/kitchen area, and a fire escape with a hundred pots of herbs… Herbs found in any Chinese American garden.”

Dreamy, right?

And then there’s Reggie, the resident ghost with an attitude and the best 1778-style English banter. He’s witty, a bit scandalous, and absolutely oozes Tom Hiddleston energy 🤤

Phil, on the other hand, is a walking ray of sunshine — innocently apologetic, unfiltered, and genuinely kind. (Though not that apologetic when it counts.) Archie might be oblivious, but it’s clear who’s smitten first.

The story isn’t just romance, though. The mystery element — the legend of the Siren of Lake Killikee — adds just enough intrigue to keep things moving, while also helping Archie come to terms with his identity as a queer Asian medium and what that means for him going forward. It’s light, but heartfelt, and the healing and acceptance arc feels sincere.

And that 80’s soundtrack? Absolutely incredible — I wish there were a Spotify playlist to go with it 🫠

I’ll admit, the middle dragged a little for me. The pacing dipped before picking back up again — mostly thanks to Phil being his adorable self and Archie finally opening up. The paranormal mystery isn’t overly complex, but it works perfectly for what the book is: a soft, character-driven, paranormal cozy with heart.

If I didn’t know there was going to be a Book 2, I’d probably feel the ending was a bit rushed — it ties things up emotionally, but there isn’t much of a solid “what’s next.” Still, it’s a spirited and heartwarming debut for the series, with the promise of more ghostly adventures (and banter) to come.

I signed up for everything Archimedes Kee. Everything. From Mandarin lessons to redcoats in the bookstore to kissing and loving, and sure, chasing down ghosts. And that means everything. I’m not going to let you face down some crabby bird water lady alone.”
“You’re truly something special, Phil Kestrel.” I tossed my arms around his neck and plastered my mouth to his. Firstly, because he was sweet and brave and sexy. Secondly, because if my tongue was tangled with his, I couldn’t blurt out that I’d fallen in love with him.

I received a copy of this book from GRR, and this is my honest review.

This book was a lovely surprise.

And by surprise, I mean I wasn't sure what type of paranormal investigation I'd be getting or how much it would be taking into account the college age, small town vibes, but this combines them all into a really sweet story.

There's loads of laughs too, alongside the more spooky elements and it's perfectly paced for the suspense narrative with tension rising the closer we get to the end.

Both characters are brilliantly crafted, Archie with his heritage and the pressure of expectations having inherited the family gift of seeing and speaking to spirits, and Phil with his enthusiasm and encouragement and general all round labrador puppy feels.

There's a whole bunch of brilliant secondary characters too, who I expect will also be regularly appearing in any future releases, who help to really bring the setting to life. I was particularly fond of the bookshop's resident Redcoat Reggie.

I'd definitely love to read more of this pair exploring the paranormal in their wee Massachusetts town.

#ARC kindly received from the author, I am voluntarily leaving a review

Overall this is the new adult version of a cozy ghost whisperer story. Does it add anything new to this genre? Not necessarily but it does a light refresh while keeping all the well-known parts the reader loves. There is the small bookstore as the main base but it's on the decline because neither Archie nor his grandfather care much about the social media status or online activities. There is the ghostly sidekick and he's everything you'd expect of a scandalous British soldier shot sometime 1778 who nevertheless cares about Archie. There are those cinnamon roll college guys at the center who fall for each other and while it's a slow burn opposites attract nobody has to worry about never-ending pinning or he-deserves-better-than-me moments, even the coming-out as a ghost whisperer isn't a big deal – Phil is taking that in stride. Maybe Phil is at first shown too much as the quintessential jock with a big heart but a simple mind but he certainly grows on you.

On the other side there's the case of the murderous 'siren'. Archie's first encounter with her and all the rumors about missing men made me looking forward to an eerie case but it seemed like the author was worried about the effect to the overall cozy charm and in the end it felt like neither one nor the other and like it always is when one part leaves me wondering, I also started wondering if it's believable to have so many paying subscribers for an completely unprofessional show. Would I pay to watch 2 cute guys wandering around seemingly pretending to talk with ghosts nobody can see? Certainly not. There are other stories more convincing in that case but nevertheless it was a really nice read and it won't be the last time I'm going to visit Kestrel and Kee.

**Arc received in exchange for an honest review**

The writing was excellent, the characters lovable, the atmosphere enticing. My only criticism is the length because I did feel like some scenes were just a bit too outstretched for my liking.
Otherwise, I enjoyed this book and will definitely read more from the author!

This is such an entertaining paranormal romance. Archie and Phil are both in college but run in very different social circles. Phil is a popular football player, son of a senator, very outgoing with a sunshine personality. Archie is reserved, quite the loner who lives with his grandfather above their bookstore and is the only gay, Asian teen in town who also happens to able to see and speak to ghosts.
It starts as quite a slow story, both with romance and paranormal, though we do meet the ghosts that Archie interacts with on a daily basis. Phil is a breath of fresh air into Archie's quiet life, and it takes him a while to accept that Phil is actually interested in him, not just for his tutoring abilities. Phil is a total sweetheart, and turns out to be rather protective when trouble comes their way in regards to the paranormal mystery that gets thrust upon Archie.
Things take a darker turn when the couple interact with what is causing trouble at Lake Killikee. It's a mystery adventure that Archie doesn't want but becomes determined to solve. It also gets quite intense towards the end and is extremely well written throughout as I fell into the mystery and suspense of the story.
A highly recommended new paranormal series with a cute new couple and intriguing storyline. I can't wait to hear more from Archie and Phil, along with Archie's grandfather and their friends.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

3.5 B-

Overall a well thought out story.
I didn't read the blurb well enouigh to realize this is a New Adult book. That might not have mattered, but NA books are not my go-to category. In fact, these days I'm often looking for over 40 protagonists, not college students. That said, I did enjoy the main characters and the plot was well conceived. Phil, a football player, is angling for a way to spend time with the "weird Asian kid," (Arch's words for himsef). Arch lives with his grandfather above their almost failing used bookstore and has inherited a gift for seeing and communicating with ghosts. Arch and Phil are really sweet together. I understand the addition of the bookstore's resident ghost and visiting ghosts, but along with some school friends, it started to feel like the book was sort of packed with lots of side characters and backstories, possibly because it's the first in a series. I may go on to the next one and see if it feels less "crowded" since the backstories are all set up.

Archie lives with his grandfather and works in his book store. He has 3 resident ghosts who lives with him. I loved ghost Reggie, he was a Revolutionary War soldier who was killed when being found with a man. He was quite funny.
Phil comes to Archie to ask him if he will tutor him in Asian studies. Naturally the 2 of them like each other and when Archie needs to make some money to pay the bills the 2 start a podcast of them doing paranormal investigations.
Loved the book, I am hoping this might become a serial.

I really enjoyed this! It's a supernatural romance, that's fun and engaging, with ghosts, a nerdy nerd and a sexy footballer -what's not to love?! Vicki has obviously researched even the small details carefully and, as a result, the story and characters feel genuine. I loved the researched stories of the water spirits/ghosts, some were interesting, and one of them included a ghost who hails from my home town!
Archie and Phil are an absolute delight. Archie can see dead people, and Phil, who is one of the nicest MCs I've ever come across, (think cinnamon roll crossed with Golden Retriever), just accepts Archie 's a medium, and simply rolls with it. As the story progresses, they both grow into their relationship, their characters growing stronger and more interesting. They have a depth to them that just drew me to them as a couple, and felt an instant connection. They are the absolute backbone of this story, which is entertaining in its own right.
The book has so much to it, it's fun and entertaining, includes some interesting secondary characters, and brings all the elements together so well. The ghost story's also quite eerie, and I loved the premise. I do hope that this is the start of a new series, I look forward to more ghost busting by Archie and Phil.

"When he pulled back to look down at me, I could barely see from the tears of merriment in my eyes."

What an interesting story by author V.L. Locey. This is book 1 of a new series called Kestrel & Kee, Paranormal Investigators.

I'm normally not a fan of single first-person POV but it worked okay in this book. I normally prefer duel POVs. It took me a bit to get into the book and I assume the POV was the reason, but once I did get further along I enjoyed it. I also plan to read the next one in this series so to me that says a lot.

I loved all of Archie's self-deprecating descriptions of himself. It made him seem fragile but he wasn't in the least. He was stronger than he ever thought he could be. And Phil, I just wanted to give him a big old hug. He was down for it all and he never let Archie down for a moment. These two guys couldn't be more opposite, but I guess that's why opposites attract trope is so popular.

Now whenever I hear “Living La Vida Loca” I'm going to smile to myself and laugh, I won't be able to help it. I don't believe I've ever laughed so hard, I almost peed myself, I was glad I was home alone when I read that part.

Opposites attract, jock/nerd, fun ghosts, spooky specters, possible soul mates, loving grandfather, brings some heat

4/5 This was both a cute romance and a fun paranormal adventure. I thought Archie and Phil made an adorable nerd/jock couple. Phil was extremely endearing, and I loved how open-minded and caring he was. Archie was more wary about the world, but at every turn, Phil proved that he could be trusted (and that not much of anything fazed him). I loved how Phil was determined to think outside the box and help Archie raise money for the bookshop.

I was entertained by Reggie, Grandpa, Sir Thomas, Monique, Roxie and Tray. I liked how supportive they were (even if some of them didn’t really believe). Archie still has lots to learn, but I liked how he was able to embrace more of himself and work on helping people. I like the idea of Archie and Phil continuing to work together in the future.

I received an ARC from GRR. This is my honest review.

Now, this is a book that I hope becomes a series. VL hasn't ventured into the paranormal and supernatural worlds since the lake Erie series many moons ago, which to me is sad because I really liked it. So I, for one, am stoked that we're getting supernatural again! First of all, I love Archie. He's both sweet, kind, and a bit fatalistic and unsocial, which given his childhood and gift makes sense. Now we have Phil, who is sweetness in human form with the charisma to the max. And we get a beautiful romantic dynamic that is paired to grow with supernatural mishaps and tax issues.
I enjoyed it immensely, and hope we get to see more of the Krestel and Kee show

The Siren of Lake Killikee is the first book in the Kestrel and Kee - Paranormal Investigators series. This is the story of Archimedes(Archie) and Phil. Archie has the gift of of talking to the dead which Phil thinks they should use to do a ghost hunter show for extra credit at college. This was a fun sweet book with a good mix of humor, college age characters, small town life and the paranormal. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait to read the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book.

This was a fun, cozy romp of a MM investigative romance. The chemistry was palpable and the intrigue was enjoyable without being too heavy/thriller-like. I enjoyed it quite a bit. I'm looking forward to continuing the series.

This was SO GOOD! I really enjoyed the relationship and familial dynamics. Archie's initial hesitation to take Phil on as a tutor, the jock friends that Phil stands up to and his leap of faith to believe in ghosts and stay when he could have taken off give Phil a place in my heart. I love how bits of Chinese culture and mixed in. The ghost story portion was interesting, not rushed and a great storyline. I can't wait to read more with these boys.

This was amazing. The premise of the story was promising and boy did it deliver. You can tell the author did research diligently. I do hope we get more Kestrel and Kee because this world will blow you away. And the side characters enrich the story so much and make you want to know more.

When I saw that book 2 was coming out I had to read this again. I loved the world so much and wanted it fresh in my mind before I started the second one. I’m so glad I did. There’s things you can easily miss on the first go. Details that you don’t get the full scope of but become clearer afterwords. I can’t think of a better time to read them. Definitely my annual Halloween reads now.

Surprisingly more engaging than expected - both MCs were appealing, with the scare-factor not too OTT and the romance level dialed to a suitable level without being overwhelmed by M-M action scenes. I'm actually looking forward to where the author takes these guys next. 3.5 stars.

A cute story, I enjoyed the MCs and the bookstore residents. I don’t care for college romances and this was one, including football and classes and school cliques. The ghost plot was interesting at times and boring at others.

Author V.L. Locey is off to a terrific start on her new paranormal romance series

Rating: 4🌈

Author V.L. Locey is off to a terrific start on her new paranormal romance series with Kestrel & Kee (Paranormal Investigators) The Siren of Lake Killikee.

It begins with Archimedes Kee ‘Archie’ Kee , Asian American, who helps run his grandfather’s failing family business, Kee’s Book Store in Liverswell, MA. Archie can interact with ghosts, a family gift passes down through generations that’s now especially relevant as Archie’s current location has several resident ghosts to converse with.

There’s Reggie, who died in 1778, he haunts the bookstore, reads the latest books, and considers himself part of the establishment and family. Also the ghosts in the streets, along with a spectral cat that comes and goes, as cats do.

But it’s the living that have issues to contend with, bills to pay, and Archie’s fluency in Mandarin brings him a handsome college football player, Phil Kestrel ,seeking help and a tutor for his Asian studies class.

Archie and Phil’s developing relationship is wonderful, especially when Phil is let in on the truth about Archie’s gift and the bookstore’s resident ghosts. As the plot switches over into a investigation into the mysterious presence in the lake, and what it means for the town’s inhabitants (living and non-corporeal), it picks up speed but starts to lose some depth in the background and plot.

I liked how Locey created and then wove in the various ethnic languages and historical references from the town to make the paranormal stories and investigations the deepest, and saddest part of the story. It could have been even more detailed, but perhaps that is going to be part of the next book. It’s certainly got my attention. And it introduces certain families of the town who might have a part to play in future stories as well.

Most of my quibbles have to do with the relationship between Archie and Phil, and Archie’s gift. Archie and Phil are just getting to know each other, they admit that they really like each other, which seems reasonable and , actually quite adorable.

But, as in too many stories I’ve read, they jump immediately into the “I love you “ conversation and confessions stage which hadn’t, imo, had a the same amount of narrative time or believable aspect to their relationship that other elements had. Really like on the way to something else? Yes, absolutely. Instant love? No. That case wasn’t made. Especially when there’s so much else going on around them.

And we really know very little about Phil here. What’s the background on him?

So in Kestrel & Kee (Paranormal Investigators) The Siren of Lake Killikee I feel that V.L. Locey is setting up a terrific location, characters and themes for a new adventure and series. There’s so much she wants to lay down that not all got fully developed or explained, just put in place for future adventures and books to make use of. I absolutely adore Archie , his grandfather, Reggie, and look forward to learning more about Phil and the rest of the town.

This is a definite recommend for lovers of paranormal romance.

What a treat this was! Known for adult MM romances, V.L. Locey has put together a wonderful YA/NA story about two teenage boys finding love, acceptance, and a vengeful ghost or two.

If you ask Archimedes Kee, he'd tell you that covering his high-school's "socially awkward Asian-American gay teen boy" quota sucks. Big time. Working part-time at his Grandpa's bookstore while also studying to keep his grades high doesn't leave Archie with much time to make friends, and as a result, his social life is rather lacking. At least in terms of living people, that is... His undead social circle, on the other hand, is overflowing due to the fact that Archie ticks another box in the diversity checklist: he can see and talk to the spirits of the deceased. When one of his high-school's most popular rugby players asks Archie to tutor him in Mandarin, Archie doesn't trust his luck. After all, why would this golden retriever of a young man want anything to do with an outcast like him? But sparks fly between Archie and Phil Kestrel from the get-go, and when Phil suggests starting a ghostbusting channel to raise funds so they can save Grandpa's bookstore, Archie can't say no. The only issue, of course, is that the case of the Siren luring men to their doom in Lake Killikee is not scripted at all...

Since this was my first V.L. Locey book ever, I was curious to see where it'd head after reading its intriguing blurb. "Asian-American medium teenager teaming up with local ray of sunshine to go ghost-hunting? Sing me UP," I thought. Boy, did the book deliver! This was a sweet tale where the supernatural mingles with cozy romance seamlessly. Although the book balances different sub-plots that go in very different directions, and range from "tutoring the rugby star" to "there's a ghost murdering people nearby" (with a few layovers in places such as "my crush gives me his varsity jacket" and "the gay ghost haunting the bookshop won't shut up about the nitty-gritty details of knowing another man carnally"), it never falters. There were very sweet and happy moments, there were emotional scenes, there was a good scare or two here and there - overall the book took me places, and I was happy to let it do so.

One of my favourite things was the way Locey very explicitly challenged bi erasure through Phil's kind but firm reminders that it's not a gay relationship when he's a bisexual man. It felt amazing to have such explicit rejection of biphobia, and even more so to not have it become Phil's sole personality trait and role. Although it wasn't stated explicitly, it felt like Phil might have ADHD?, which also made me ultra happy, and overall I will die for Phil Kestrel anytime he needs me to take a bullet or two.

Then there was Archimedes, the snarky smartass with a heart of gold, who was the funniest and most interesting narrator I could've asked for. Clever without coming across as pedantic, and kind without losing his bite, Archie was an amazing character. He also challenged racist remarks and assumptions about his Asian heritage and his sexuality, and I felt like a proud parent as I watched his journey of self-acceptance regarding his gift. There were a few moments in which I cracked up quite loudly, and oh, Archie, how I'll miss you until the next book! (Because there's gonna be a next book. Right? RIGHT!?)

While these two characters would've been more than enough for me to devour the story, their charm was sprinkled with a great plot that was neatly paced - not too fast, not too slow. It was quite interesting to progressively learn more about the ghost haunting Killikee Lake, and I had a moment of Spanish Joy when I saw that one of the characters was from my own home country. It's not every day that you get a dona d'aigua in a book written by someone who's not from Spain!!

Overall I strongly recommend giving this book a chance, because it's well worth your time!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I enjoyed this much more than I expected I would. I think it was too short for one thing, but the author packed a lot into what she gave us. We're introduced to Archimedes Kee, or Archie to his friends, few as they may be in the beginning of the book, and his grandfather. Archie works with his grandfather in probably the most haunted bookstore in their small college town. Archie is blessed, or cursed depending on the day, with the family gift of being able to interact with ghosts. His parents died in a boating accident when he was a child, and he grew up with his grandfather. The gift skips generations so his grandfather can sense when ghosts are around but can’t interact like Archie can.

We get to meet Phil Kestrel, when Archie goes to the student union to hang fliers advertising his services as a tutor. Phil is a big blond football player puppy dog type who just overwhelms Archie. Reggie, a gay British ghost from before the Revolutionary War, describes his as “a burly blond honey pot!” The gay part is important since he was shot by the owner of the tavern that used to occupy the bookstore space while engaging in certain acts with the owner’s son-in-law.

Phil and Archie get closer over the first few chapters until they’re dating. Archie doesn’t tell Phil about his supernatural abilities for fear of scaring him off. He eventually does discover the truth after they return home from a date and interrupt a ghostly book club meeting by accident. Phil is unnerved by seeing floating books, but after Archie explains everything, he's fine with it. I’m really glad there is no relationship angst because the author gives us enough angst with the title character.

The title character, the Siren of Lake Killikee, was a woman who had been accused of witchcraft and tortured and killed by drowning in the town’s lake. Men have been disappearing from the town for decades and it had been blamed on her ghost. This is where I’m cutting off the plot review. I don’t want to give anything away. It’s a good solid story and it should appeal to MM romance readers, horror enthusiasts, and those who enjoy a good ghost story. It’s well written and the characters are fleshed out fairly well. Like I said earlier, I think it’s too short so I don’t get the character development I’d like, but I think we’ll get that in the next book. One thing that did bother me and it’s because I’m weird. Phil says his father is both a congressman and a Senator at different times in the book. I’m guessing this might be an editing error. I doubt anyone else even noticed, but I’m political and I notice stuff like that. LOL

I highly recommend this book. You’ll fall in love with Phil, Archie, Grandpa, and all the ghosts. The plot is good and there’s just enough horror to keep you from getting too comfortable. Can’t wait for the next one!

This book is absolutely adorable! It’s true I’m a huge fan of Locey’s writing, but this story really ticked off so many boxes for me as a reader. I know I’m having a wonderful time when I stop to make note after note like “This is such a delight”, “I love this so much”, “this story is warming my heart with glee” while reading. As well as seeing the characters brought to life in a way that I can’t wait to return to their story to continue becoming invested in their lives. That is exactly what happened while reading Kestrel and Key.

I don’t always look at the synopsis for authors that I automatically read, but the cover of the book made me do so in this case. When I saw that it was kind of “spooky”, I wasn’t sure it would be for me. But Locey’s history of diversity in storytelling that did not steer me wrong was enough to dive right in. (I’m looking at you Crow and Sparrow) And I’m so, so glad I did. It’s one of those kinds of stories that I didn’t know how much I needed until I read it.

I cannot gush enough about how much I loved Archie and Phil! They both made me so happy, especially with how they treated each other. The story is told in single POV through Archie’s eyes. I loved Phil so much that I thought I wanted to get inside his head as well, but I see the reason to keep it grounded with Archie. And let me take a moment to say that Sir Reginald practically stole the show. Locey always writes outstanding side characters and this is a perfect example of that. There are so many fine details that make the story compelling to read and I appreciate the hard work that goes into doing so.

I feel like my thoughts are scattered all over the place trying to convey my love for this book. I honestly think you just need to experience it for yourself. I would highly recommend Kestrel and Kee for readers looking for a different kind of story with highly personable new adult-aged main characters that find love (with charming first time experiences) along an interesting path that includes spirits and fantastic side characters. So. Much. Fun! All the stars and more!

Kestrel & Kee—The Siren of Lake Killikee
VL Locey

This short novel was written in 2022 and has now been released I believe as a standalone. However, having now read it, I'd be invested in more Kestrel and Kee adventures.
Phil Kestrel is the big, blond jock, who is openly bi.
Archimedes (Archie) Kee is the South East Asian heritage student who lives with his Grandpa above the bookshop he works in whilst studying.
Archie needs to raise money for their property taxes quickly so offers his services as tutor.
Phil approaches him and surprises Archie with his enthusiasm, sweetness and golden retriever energy.
In fact, he likes 'likes' Archie and the feeling is mutual, but Archie's big secret? He talks to the dead - resident ghosts including Reggie the sometimes rude, gay British soldier. Never mind the twins next door who invite demons for tea parties.
As the two start to hang out, budding filmmaker Phil suggests they livestream some ghost hunts.
This is part romance, part supernatural mystery as the lads try to figure out where the missing people have gone from the lake and part fun romp as Grandpa and his girlfriend Monique get involved along with Phil's friends Roxie and Tray.
It's a fun read, suitable spice and it's the side characters like Gramps and Reggie that make it fun.
I was a bit jarred by some of Phil's character; ironically it's the parts where he sounds more 'dumb jock' than when he's sweet or funny, because the latter felt more real.
Either way I enjoyed it and would like to read more.

I ADORE THESE TWO MC's.

Archie Kee is an average college student--except that he's also a seer, and can see and speak to ghosts. He and his grandfather live above their bookstore, a bookstore that's currently struggling due to a lack of interest in paper books. Archie and his grandfather aren't the only ones who live in the bookstore: They share the space with a British Revolutionary War-era ghost who gabs constantly about the recent rumors being spread by the other local ghosts. He's also a perv 🤣

One day while trying to avoid a group of jocks, one of the hottest jocks at his college approaches him and asks for tutoring---and now Archie finds himself with a very hyper, sexy, golden retriever of a jock who seems to be absolutely enamored by Archie. Phil seems too good to be true, but soon they find themselves entrenched in a deadly mystery that will surely scare Phil away, right??

Phil is SO FREAKING SWEET to Archie, I totally adore how much HE adores Archie and treats him like a prince, which Archie deserves. I also fell in love with Gramps and wanted to hug him.

Aside from the characters, I really enjoyed the historical aspect and the balance between positive spirits vs. negative and how the author humanized them (even the seemingly evil spirit). The story is relatively lighthearted with a good amount of humor to balance the spookiness.

I can't freaking wait for the next book.

Loved it💜

This was such an enjoyable story, a real page turner and I read it in one go. Archie is adorable and special, although he has gone through life knowing he was weird, seeing and speaking to ghosts since he was a toddler, but he had no friends and kept his weirdness to himself.

He was of Asian heritage and his family could be traced back centuries in China. They had a special gift, well some of them did as it could skip generations, and his amazing grandfather who had a wonderful sense of humour didn’t possess any special powers.

Archie’s parents had been killed when he was two and his grandfather had raised him.

When Archie met the gorgeous big blonde football player Phil at college it was lust at first sight although he had no idea Phil fancied him and thought he was just going to tutor him in Cantonese.

When they decide, with a bit of help from a couple of friends, to start a podcast and hunt ghosts they have no idea what they have let themselves in for. They try to solve a centuries old problem which nearly gets them killed!

I loved the side characters in this book and Reggie, the resident ghost in Archie and his grandfather’s bookshop was hilarious.

Thoroughly enjoyable and I really hope the author decides to write another adventure for Archie and Phil. I would definitely read it.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

The Siren of Lake Killikee is the first book in the Kestrel and Kee Paranormal Investigators series by V.L. Locey. I really loved this one and found Archie and Phil such adorable and appealing characters. This story has a new adult feel, with both guys being in college.

The groundwork for the suspense portion is laid early on, but most of the action happens in the second half of the book. We learn that there are rumors of men who have disappeared from the lake, as well as some gossip about it in the ghostly circles. When Archie and Phil go to film what they think will be a routine ghost sighting video with a ghostly farmer in a pumpkin patch, it leads them to learn more about the lake’s ghost and they are determined to help.

I really enjoyed the way the book incorporates Archie’s culture into the story as well, including some of the Mandarin language and Chinese legends about various spirits. While both Charlie and his grandfather were born in America, they have a strong connection to their history and culture that is brought into the book and it adds some nice elements to the story.

Oh my God this book was such a pleasant surprise! I wasn’t sure what I was getting into when I first read the blurb but as soon as I started it, I couldn’t put it down!

I’m obsessed with anything ghost related. Then you add an Asian character and the greenest green flag jock, and I’m a goner.

Archie hated seeing ghosts all his life. He felt he was cursed for being the one with the ability to see the undead because it made his already odd personality even more odd.

When the hottest guy on campus asks him to tutor him for his Asian language course, Archie can’t help but wonder if he’s being pranked. No way is Phil talking to him. Nobody talks to him, especially not such a beautiful man.

Their tutoring turns into a sweet friendship that becomes more the more time they spend together. Phil not only likes Archie, but accepts his gift and the two team up to help the evil spirit on the lake.

Their relationship is so beautiful and sweet. Phil becomes a great supporter for Archie and shows him that being unique is a great thing.

I loved, loved the grandpa! His encouragement for Archie to be himself was so inspiring. He never made him feel inadequate for being gay and that alone made me love him more.

I can’t wait to read book two. This one was absolutely amazing.

This book was interesting and quite entertaining, it is a good paranormal mystery adventure. It also has Archie and Phil, the jock/nerd college guys who form an unlikely friendship that leads to a sweet romance. Their story is told from Archie's POV.
Archie is shy and awkward, he has a gift that he has kept hidden from everyone except for his Gramps. When Phil accidentally discovers the supernatural, it's a bit of a shock, but he soon becomes Archie's biggest supporter while Archie gradually accepts that his gift was given to him for a purpose. By the end of the book he has learned some, but it felt like he still has more to learn - perhaps in future books?
Phil is popular, he's a nice, sweet guy that has an exhuberant, quirky personality. I liked how he got along with everyone, but Archie was clearly his favourite person.
There is paranormal activity and a mystery to be solved, some tense moments, first times, and a great cast of secondary characters that support the MC's - I found Reggie to be absolutely hilarious and he caused some LOL moments.
Overall, I would recommend this book.

It took five full chapters for Archie to realize he was smitten with Phil Kestrel. I think it took me less than one to fall for this engaging, bouncy 80s-music- loving football player. In fact, both these characters wound around my heart early on but for very different reasons. Phil is essentially a giant retriever puppy in a football coat. Archie is smart, wise, caring and warm despite feeling like “other” growing up as the “Weird queer Asian kid”. However, these two fit together like finely crafted puzzle pieces.

And although readers are let in on the fact that Archie can communicate with ghosts quite early, it isn’t until chapter 7 that Kestrel and Kee, Paranormal investigators, is formed. This allows Locey to do some beautiful world-building and character development and gives the budding romance time to bloom. The novel flows effortlessly, thanks to this attention to detail by the author.

Grandpa Kee is a riot (the drugstore scene killed me). Ghostly Reggie is a hoot. I basically cannot adequately express how much I loved this story. I hope the author brings us back to this fresh, new world. 5 stars.
