Alt Vegas: Nuclear Dreams

Rate this book
Newlyweds Kyle and Mandy arrive in the quiet town of Esperville, Oregon, ready to build and sell homes, imagining a bright future together. But Esperville hides a dark the land itself seems to swallow its residents whole. Vanished without a trace. At first, Kyle dismisses the town's disturbing history as local superstition—until a close friend is savagely attacked by a nightmarish creature, and Mandy disappears that same night.

Desperate to find her, Kyle teams up with Sam Oswell, a grieving potter haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his own son. Together, they uncover a doorway to "the Alt"—an eerie, alternate dimension where a breaking time loop, traps its inhabitants in a twisted version of 1950s Las Vegas replete with creatures, monsters and evolving lifeforms. This world teems with strange life forms, and reality itself is breaking down.

Worse, it is a two-way door, and Kyle soon realizes that the reality of the Alt has already bled into small and quaint Esperville with deadly results.

To rescue Mandy, Kyle must face mind-bending dangers in both dimensions, confronting a ruthless army officer intent on preserving the Alt's deadly cycle. Time is running out, and as the boundaries between worlds crumble, Kyle must risk everything—not only his life, but the fragile balance of reality itself

I received a copy for review from the author.

Kyle and Mandy have dreams making a profit by developing when they purchase land in Esperville, Oregon. Soon they find out the land is home to a portal to another dimension stuck in 1950s Las Vegas. It is a hard place with unforgiving desert and fiendish creatures.

This a fantastic creature feature horror novel with an alternate dimension flair. The characters, Kyle and Mandy, did not seem sympathetic at first as foolhardy newlyweds taking on more than they can chew. However, throughout the story they become more and more endearing. They are great underdog characters to root for. The portal to Alt Vegas allows for such contrasting settings. The lush and overgrown Oregon with the desert landscape outside 1950s Vegas. The last fourth of the book could have used another round of line editing, but overall this was a fantastic thrilling novel. Its biggest asset is its amazing creatures. Killer plants, and another creatures which I will not be able to get the image out of my head for a long time. These creatures create some unbelievable scenes of absolute pandemonium. This is a must read novel for fans of creature features.

Absolutely awful

Don't. Just don't. The premise sounds interesting but the book doesn't live up to it. The horror aspect is decent but not worth struggling through the rest.
The characters are unlikable, miserable people.
The plot doesn't deserve to be called a plot.
Worst, however, is the quality of the writing. This book was either a) written by AI, b) incredibly poorly translated from another language or c) has never seen anything resembling editor's desk. Possibly some combination of all three.
The number of missing words and misplaced punctuation marks - both in terms of missing and in terms of extras that don't belong - makes getting through this an act of will.
And to clarify, I don't mean "oh, this has a few errors and I'm a grammar snob." There are mistakes in every single paragraph. Sometimes multiple per paragraph. At least two sections are completely unreadable because the text is so incoherent.
If I had a physical copy I would have returned it ten pages in.
The only reason it has one star is because Amazon won't let me give it 0.

Well, This Was Different
I wasn't sure what to expect out this one, but I gave it a shot. It grew on me the more I listened to it. By the time this sordid tale was told I was engrossed in these characters and the choices they were making. This is a completely wild ride with hints of LIttle Shop of Horrors, The Twilight Zone, The Blob, and perhaps even a little of The Stepford Wives. What a ride.

I honestly liked the story. Alternate universe, good monsters, hero’s and end of world vibes. I listened on audible so not sure if the abrupt changes of view point throwing me off was bad editing or just came across better in print. Anyways worth a read!

This was a very strange book. I read lots of fantasy, horror, and alt reality books but this one was different. I spent several sections of the book in confusion. Overall, it was an interesting plot and I wanted to continue reading.

DNF. I listened to 14 1/2 chapters and couldn’t take anymore. Not my kind of book, but I gave it a fair shot.

3.5 - B movie sci-fi feel which is fun. Would love to see this as a B-movie
