That said American Mah Jongg for Beginners is one of the most well-organized and approachable guides I’ve seen for learning this game. Having only played Mahjong on a computer this was extremely interesting to me. Linda Moore does a great job breaking down a complicated game into something you can actually understand and apply—without making it feel like homework.

Right from the start, the tone is light, conversational, and encouraging. It doesn’t feel like a manual. It feels like sitting down with a friend who’s been playing for years and knows how to explain things in plain English.

The book walks you through everything—tile breakdowns, how the annual NMJL card works, gameplay mechanics, strategy, etiquette, and even how to play online or with just two people. I especially appreciated how each section builds on the last without overwhelming you. And the exercises? Actually helpful. You’re not just reading about Mah Jongg—you’re learning to play it.

Yes, it’s beginner-friendly, but it doesn’t talk down to you. The Charleston section alone is worth the price of the book if you’re new to American Mah Jongg. There’s also a great blend of cultural background, strategy tips, and those little “why it matters” insights that help things click faster.

The book is great I really enjoyed reading and learning this interesting game in the process! I used to think that mahjong is difficult and it looks really unfamiliar when you first start playing it, but the author explains everything so simply and easily that after a couple of chapters you want to sit down and try to play it. I especially liked that there are not just rules, but a whole atmosphere - history, advice, even etiquette at the table! There are even strategies for beginners, and everything is presented not boringly, but very clearly and with intended fun. It is easy to read, with humor. In general, if you wanted to learn how to play American mahjong, but did not know where to start here it is, the perfect start!

I never thought I’d get hooked on a game like this, but here I am, already practicing almost every night. What I loved most was how approachable this book is. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never touched a tile before—everything is explained in such a clear and friendly way. Solid Technical Manual for Mah Jongg

Chock full of details, this guide is sure to get the reader to the pro level as mentioned in the title. Pictures and diagrams were a great help. Complete to be the comprehensive source for the game. I've read only a little of Mah Jongg before and was curious since I play the solitaire. This is a completely different game and I'm not sure I'd be able to pick this up without friends and/or a teacher, but having the reference here would be a great way to come up the learning curve.

"American Mah Jongg for Beginners" is a good book for someone who wants to learn how to play Mah Jongg or brush up on the basics. I'm a board games lover and used to play this game as a kid, but now I don't remember it clearly. This book took me from clueless to confident in starting a beginner game. I appreciated the practice exercises in the book and the summary graphics at the end of many sections in the book. However, I got a bit lost after "shuffling" and dealing the tiles; it would have been very helpful to have a graphic there or a link to a video to demonstrate this. All in all, I loved the simplicity of the book and giving examples. It took me about 2 hrs to read it cover-to-cover.
