He called me his “mystery girl” on stream. Live. In front of thousands of viewers.
The wildest part? I didn’t even know who he was.
I was at my usual gaming café, grinding ranked matches in a popular MOBA game called NLA.
But instead of celebrating my latest win, I was fuming. One of my teammates had spent the entire game spewing sexist insults at me, even though I carried the match and we won despite him.
While the rank-up animation played on my screen, some guy walked up and tried to congratulate me. Tall, dark-haired, handsome, with a nerdy edge—usually, he’d be my type. But I barely glanced at him. After the night I’d had, I wasn’t in the mood to entertain more fragile male egos.
Turns out, that guy was MnstrX.
Yeah, that MnstrX. The most famous pro gamer in the NLA scene. The guy who’s won every single major tournament in the game—twice.
And now, he’s on his stream, calling me his “mystery girl” and offering to coach me.
What do you even do when the best NLA player in the world asks to coach you?
You say yes.
What started as “just coaching” quickly became something more. Alex Thorne—aka MnstrX—turned out to be thoughtful, kind, and way more down-to-earth than I expected.
And if you think climbing the ranks in a competitive video game is hard, try navigating a secret relationship with one of the biggest names in esports.
This book was SOMETHING alright. I'm not sure where to start; the amount of notes I made while reading, especially on all the inaccuracies, is astounding. My Kindle Notes and Highlights.
Let me first say, I LOVE the premise! (The ONLY reason I'm giving it 3 stars... well that and when Alex randomly put on a Shrek movie bc that reminded me of my bf and it was CUTE.) A romance novel with a gaming twist? Yes, please!! I even enjoyed how the video game mentioned in the book is loosely based on League of Legends, which I’ve been playing for over ten years—I play ADC/Sup & Mid with some jg experience back in Season 6, though you will never catch me top that shit is aids esp with the changes in the last 2-3 years. But while the concept had promise, the execution and writing? Not it.
I have mixed feelings about this and I'm not sure how to review it, or have all my thoughts laid out in a way that even makes sense. But maybe I'll review this in chronological order based on the events in the book, probably with quotes etc? Not sure yet.

Good Game, Gamer Girl has a lot of potential to be great, but it felt like a rough draft, with underdeveloped characters, and unanswered questions. And the lack of research into the actual game, esports, and streaming made it inaccurate; and at times, painfully cringe to read. While there are some cute-ish moments, some very cute quotes and I desperately tried to like the characters, some parts of this book were so aggravating that they overshadow the good.
I will say, though, 1 thing the author did right, was the portrayal of how toxic the league community/gaming community is towards females, I've experienced it first hand, being targeted by these sad lonely men who are actually trash at the game
⊹ 𝔀𝓱𝓪𝓽 𝓽𝓸 𝓮𝔁𝓹𝓮𝓬𝓽 ⊹ ❥Fast pace ❥Duo POV ❥ Unbelievable Cringe ❥Golden Retriever / Black Cat ❥He falls first and he falls harder ❥He is obsessed and she is oblivious ❥Hurt/comfort ❥Sweet & spicy ❥No breakup ❥One bed during a power outage ❥Secret relationship
This is based on LoL (league of legends), while the concept of league is there, the game knowledge = 0
I've been playing LoL since season 2 and I'm a Masters / Grandmaster support/jungle player and my account level is 1506. I PLAY THE SHIT OUT OF THIS GAME. And stream it + I'm a part of the League Partner program. It's my main game all will always be my main game.
But this book doesn't do it justice.. i guess apart from the toxicity that is league - the trollers, griefers, misogynistic men who think they're all that (honestly, ive seen more toxic women than men) but boy oh boy THE CRINGE IN THIS BOOK IS INSANE. Like I PHYSICALLY CRINGED WITH MY ENTIRE BEING
I'm not even sure the author plays LoL... or streams?
A very light romance about a girl trying to achieve a higher Rank than her ex in a video game called Nexus Legends Arena, only to cross paths with a popular streamer in the same community. He coaches her in her preferred role, she gets a deal with his org., she streams her games.
There are a few charming moments, but overall it is the most cringe-worthy aggravating read known to man.
As a girl gamer, I am appalled to be associated in any way with these characters and book or the inaccurate portrayal of how Ranked games work.
The only accurate thing the author did was portraying the toxicity towards females, but over time you learn to live with it—I'm past the point where it doesn't even bother me, esp since I play some of the MOST toxic games—COD:BO3, CSGO, League of legends (which this game is slightly based on) - I'm decently high rank in cs+league and have played both since they first came out 2012+2009.
The characters felt severely underdeveloped. The romance or lack there of was sweet sometimes with some cringe smut.
The game in question is based on League of Legends, which the author clearly does not play from all the inaccuracies. And Alex's org is pretty much TSM lol Alex's coaching was subpar and basic League concepts.
Also, girl that is not how streaming works!! I used to stream frequently back in 2010-2018, had a decent following. I would know. There is no such thing as the the org starting the stream and shes at a different location, unless the org has anydesk installed so they can move the mouse on your PC to click "Start stream" on OBS LMAO but that is so fucking weirdchamp
bro, does this author even game? surely not probably out here playing animal crossing and calling it 'gaming' (but don't write about competitive games if you don't understand how they work)
p.s. animal crossing carried me through lockdown during COVID times but COD, CSGO, Apex and League will always have my heart and be my go to🥰
✯ ✯ ✯3/5 stars✯ ✯ ✯ this was a cute short read! some things felt a little rushed and sometimes the couple did annoy me a bit but it was fun nonetheless. as a gamer myself, i can confirm that there are definitely sexist men on these games and i feel for the fmc when she tries to use voice chat and immediately gets verbally attacked by them. it’s always annoying, but im glad she didnt let it stop her from playing and enjoying it ✨ as for the mmc, he stole my heart for sure💕. he was such a sweetheart and if y’all are into submissive men, this one is def for you 👀
Was this the first draft? This felt so rough. Most of the book is just bullet points of what was happening.
The character development was almost non existent. We are going to mention all these things like not talking to her family, random anxiety attacks, and her three year old feud with her ex all just in passing with no further look into it. We don’t even get a satisfying confrontation with her ex. She is sooooo worked up over their relationship that she rage games for three years to get even and then says zero words to him when they have a chance for a confrontation.
This was the least romantic romance ever. Both the characters are sad mentally unhealthy people. And it’s not actually addressed. Emma just actively chooses to have unhealthy relationship parameters and Alex is just a beta simp who wants to cry over silly things all the time and allows Emma to walk all over him and make strange demands for their relationship. He happily never gets anything he wants. The romance was awkward and weird.
There is also such a thing as too much consent. When you are already one orgasm in, pausing to keep asking if it ok to touch a man’s penis is just weird.
The ending is also anti-romance. I think it was meant to be proof that Emma was a strong capable woman. But it fell really flat after Alex did all the standing up for her against her ex, while she did nothing. Alex confronted the players blocking her rank up, not her. What the hell did Emma accomplish? Alex was the only one with a sane response to her moving out (to be like two floors away from him). Yes, their relationship moved fast. But there was no logical reason for her to actually move back out. In fact it was more in line with her keeping Alex at a distance rather than embracing their relationship. It was, as Alex said, a step backwards.
In the end, everything was anti climactic and illogical.
The only issue I really had with the story was that the hero was super eager - maybe a little desperate. Meanwhile the heroine was just a little annoying with her constant demands. It felt like everything in the relationship revolved around her and her wants and desires. The hero was willing to let her do anything and bend over backwards to make her happy. I guess I just felt like the story went too far with it, she became annoying after a while.
Safety was great No OW drama, very minor OM drama from heroine’s ex No scenes with OM/OW No cheating Both hero and heroine mention having an occasional ONS in the past, but no details
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was a super cute and fun read. I love books like this for a good palate cleanser after a more intense read because it was fluffy and low drama. Having a book where a couple actually communicates with each other instead of making assumptions and a bunch of angsty misunderstandings is a nice change of pace. And bonus points for no 3rd act breakup!
2.5⭐ I liked the premise, it reminded me of my favorite C-drama, Falling Into Your Smile.
This one definitely gave instalove vibes. It was cute but didn’t have much going on. The story had potential and could’ve been so much better with a bit more research. I mean c'mon, it’s an e-sports romance, yet I barely heard (yes, went with the audiobook at 2x speed) any real depth about the game itself.
I didn't understand why they had to keep their relationship a secret. The MMC was a little too enamored?? like the whole 'if she broke a nail, I'd cry' was a bit much.
I had an absolute blast reading this! It was SO cute!
as a female gamer myself, I felt so seen in this story! as females in the gaming community, we tend to get so much slack for different things in this hobby and I felt like this story really highlighted that perfectly.
“It wasn’t that there weren’t any positive comments and positive posts, but the negative ones seemed louder”
^^ That one quote alone hit hard! I’ve copped my fair share of insults on social media sharing gaming content and there have been times where this is exactly how I felt!
The romance was fast paced, and a little spicy! Alex was just the perfect guy too! So sweet! 🥹 I’m really excited for the next book!!
Good Game, Gamer Girl is a fast paced, steamy romance story with dual POV revolving around the gaming community. We read the story of Emma, who has not had it easy in the gaming community; and Alex, a popular streamer in the gaming community who is currently facing his own obstacles due to his arm injury.
I enjoyed the main plot of the story; however, I had a hard time connecting with the characters. The dialogue between the characters did not flow well.
You can consider taking whatever I say here with a grain of salt because, as I came to realise, I am definitely not the target audience of a romance novel, however, I still believe that the criticism I have is warranted and well-deserved. Also, this will probably be a rant, so be warned.
The main offence, I don't think, can be argued, is that it was mind-numbingly boring. It took me so long to read despite having less than 300 pages because I literally could not read more than one chapter at a time before my mind would start to wander due to the lack of stimulation. Like, I would start planning a grocery list in the middle of a chapter because the only thing that would happen was 'they cuddled to sleep. When she woke up, she could smell the pancakes he was making for breakfast. They ate breakfast. She started streaming. She ended the stream. They went to bed. They cuddled to sleep...' you get my point. The scenes that could have been impactful were rushed to the point where I thought I was zoning out and skipping paragraphs because they were resolved in half a page just so we can go back to the bland stuff faster, ig. It was so boring that it legit made me miss the godforsaken third act breakup, and I HATE those, but at least then something would happen.
Every problem they ever had was resolved on the next page or two. It was absolutely an instalove/instalust situation (again, I hate those), so from page 70, there wasn't even the yearning to keep us going. The smut was so bland and uninteresting, any ff on ao3 would probably handle it better. Also, entirely too many mentions of balls and the use of the phrase 'milk him' is enough to deserve jail, gross. Like bros (gender-neutral), does anyone find the term 'milking' hot? Because personally, it makes me want to crawl out of my skin or start banging my head against the wall or both. Another thing, I feel like they confessed to each other on 3 or 4 different occasions, and each time they acted like it was a revolutionary step in their relationship, eh?
Alex, oh Alex. I don't think I have ever encountered more tryhard Nice Guy™ in my entire goddamn life. Let me give you a quote that made me want to gouge my eyes out so I can illustrate this point better: for context, the FMC just opened a can. "That's when I noticed her nails were painted pastel lilac. I silently cursed myself for not offering to open it for her. If she broke a nail because of me, I'd probably cry about it later, I'm not kidding." XDDDDDDD There is, in fact, such a thing as doing TOO much, and this guy spends the entire runtime doing just that AND on top of that completely disregards her feelings just so he can play out some bullshit white knight fantasy that he has. There are several scenes where she's like 'don't fight my battles,' he says, 'okay, sorry' turns around and DOES IT AGAIN, and she forgives him every single time. Girl, he ain't gonna learn like this. He's literally the 'oh no I dropped my feminist literature' meme and I HATE his stupid ass.
Also, there wasn't enough of the mockup League of Legends to keep me entertained, and the stuff that was there often was nonsensical adding to my annoyance even futher.
The only reason it gets half a star over 1 is that it wasn't Rina Kent's level of bad and toxic.
NOTHING HAPPENS!! Literally nothing happens in this book. There is no main conflict, the main characters fall in love quickly and easily, and the author does not bother to explain anything from the FMC’s past in any detail. We are told multiple times that Emma was in a bad relationship and that impacts her now, but we never learn what her ex did, how she responded back then, and how she’s tried to move on since. We just get told that the relationship ended three years ago but that she is still somehow still as affected by it. The MMC is just a golden retriever who immediately falls in love with her and wants to care for her in every way. There’s no tension! I get that the author is trying to avoid the third act break up, but you still need some sort of conflict or tension that lasts longer than 2 pages. Every “fight” is resolved by Emma telling Alex he’s wrong, him agreeing with her, and then they have sex. BORE-O SNORE-O!!!
When I came across Good Game, Gamer Girl: A Spicy Gamer Girl Romance I just had to pick it up. More gaming girls in novels please! It was also just the thing I was looking for, something short and sweet, an easy read. Currently on kindle unlimited!
Emma is incredibly relatable. She has an ex who made fun of her for enjoying a game she liked while being at a low skill level. Screw that dude! So she made it her goal to become better at NLA than him, and succeeded. It's a bit hard to believe she didn't have her own gaming setup while achieving this, but fine. Commence the meet cute, which means Alex bumping into her, awkwardly congratulating her and then bailing because he was late for work (streaming NLA). Emma, used to being hit on in a scene that is dominated by men, is almost disappointed that this cute stranger didn't try to flirt with her. Thing is, he cannot get her out of his head and tells his chat about her. One thing leads to another, and Alex is clipped asking for his mystery girl to reach out to him, offering her a coaching to climb further.
I feel like it might be a bit hard to follow Emma's coaching sessions with Alex if you're not into League of Legends, but if you do, I'm certain you'll love it even more. Their getting to know each other is sweet, and while I approve 100% of supportive boyfriends, Alex is the greenest flag you'll ever meet. Give me just a liiiittle more interaction between the MCs where they're not on the same page / where he doesn't immediately agree with her. Like them building a goddamn shelf together - I liked that a lot. The bonus chapter for example made me super happy! Two of those snippets I wish had been part of the book because these small struggles just make Alex and Em become so much more real.
When Alex brought up the convention it was obvious that they were going to Which she has now upgraded tremendously. You go, girl!
PS: While reading this I was constantly wondering two things: which champs they were playing - my money is now on Caitlyn and Tresh, and what inspired the name of the org - probably TL? :D
PPS: I'm a support main, too. And I can't wait to read about Ryan!
I picked it up as an audiobook to keep me company while busy at home, and it was exactly the vibe I needed. Cute, light, and entertaining. Yes, there’s a touch of insta-love, but I still really enjoyed how the romance and story unfolded.
I’m not a gamer, so I can’t judge the accuracy of the gaming aspects. But if you’re like me—zero gaming knowledge and not too fussed about realism—you’ll still enjoy it.
I can definitely see myself picking up more books from this series and author!
Super sweet and charming with fluff and open communication. Very low drama.
And for anyone like me who goes into gamer girl books worried: there is no doxxing, no stalkers, 1 shitty ex who has left an emotional mark on her but barely comes up on page.
I have a confession. I have reviews that still need to be written for something like five books I've read, and I haven't even started. I was also supposed to be asleep several hours ago, but let me explain why I'm writing this review at 1 AM instead of acting like a responsible adult.
I read this book - Good Game, Gamer Girl - today, in about three sittings. I had never heard of it until two days ago when I saw a post about it on, I think, Threads and thought it sounded cute. And then I opened it up this morning and it somehow was everything I wanted in a book.
Okay, a summary: A young woman is on a years-long quest to beat her ex-boyfriend's ranking in a competitive online game after he broke up with her for sucking at it. Right as she accomplishes this goal, she runs into one of the top competitive players of that game in the world. They're into each other immediately, but instead of dealing with that, they try to focus on keeping their relationship professional; he's going to coach her into becoming pro-level herself, since he's off with an injury.
No monsters. No tentacles. No weird stuff. Just absolutely freaking adorable. Emma has actual problems and insecurities. Alex just wants to be with her. It's perfect.
Nothing crazy happens in this book. Nobody gets kidnapped or brainwashed; there's no Act 3 breakup, no horrible fight caused by a simple miscommunication that a normal couple would resolve in one sentence. It's cute, it's funny, it's straightforward, and it's a breath of fresh air.
The actual sex takes a while to get going; it's plenty explicit, but they spend the first portion of the book pining instead of fucking. There's basically nothing kinky or even questionable here - there's oral, handjobs, and regular old sex, but no anal or choking or bondage. And honestly, I'm totally fine with that. It's a short book, very sweet, and I feel like anything kinky would have felt more shocking and out of character than hot for them anyway.
I'm going to be gentle because this is a debut novel.
I really, really wanted this to be a 5 star for me. Even after seeing more critical reviews.
I love the focus on an FMC who is a gamer. And I think it's important to spotlight the intense (and sometimes dangerous) shit that gets thrown at girls and women in the gaming world. I love a nerdy MMC who falls first and falls harder. And I'm a fan of slice of life novels. I even enjoy insta lust/insta love Conceptually, this book was a slam dunk for me.
I think the book really needed more critical editors in the early stages. Alex, the MMC, was way too desperate from basically the very beginning. I would have said this book, specifically Alex, had too much angst even if this was about 14yo teens navigating their first dating experiences.
I didn't feel like there were a lot of moments that built their relationship. Alex continues to treat her like precious glass that he needs to protect from the world, even after she tells him to cut it out. And she continues to seem honestly indifferent to him romantically. It felt like they were mostly together because they were both lonely and they were nice enough to show a modicum of care about the other person's well-being. Lots of "oh my gosh, no one has ever been so nice and attentive to me", and not enough about what they saw in each other as individuals. I was told about how much they meant to each other, but I never really was shown that. Not in a healthy way, at least. Their romance felt really immature.
Honestly, I feel bad reviewing this poorly, especially because it doesn't have a ton of reviews. But I also want to be honest about what I thought about the book. I really, really think the author really would benefit from more involved editing at the early stages.
6🌟 I absolutely loved this book. The cuteness between the 2 main characters, the gaming and streaming the way that they did stuff and interacted with the everyone. They actually were adults about everything. They talked things through, this was so cute. No bad drama loved that. I wish more books did similar stuff. I literally don't know how to describe what I'm feeling.
Honestly, it was fine... but really it was kind of boring, not gonna lie. The FMC wasn't very likeable at all, the MMC was basically a doormat. Though I give him credit for trying, but every time he did try to be a bit more assertive and stand up for the FMC, she made him feel like crap for it. As for the story, ehh. It was fine. There was no real conflict, though. Any bit of conflict that was there was very quickly and easily resolved. I don't know, guys. I didn't hate it... I'm just not happy I wasted my time reading it. 🤷♀️
