As a basilisk, Bain Ophion has lived over two hundred years. For the last ten, he’s worked for his best friend, a sorcerer who runs Protective Solutions. Bain loves his work as a bodyguard and especially loves proving his skills when clients take one look at him and doubt. Yeah, he may dress flashy and have androgynous looks, but he also comes with preternatural strength. Humans don’t know that, though. Because, like all his fellow bodyguards, he uses a glamour to hide what doesn’t blend. Most humans aren’t ready to know about the supernatural world around them, but he’s about to learn that there are a few who are special.
Clive Manning has no idea which of his new clients is threatening his life, but when they send someone to break into his home, he knows he can’t handle this alone. He lives a perfectly ordered life and works from home for a reason. Lifelong fear. He calls Protective Solutions and hires a bodyguard, and when that man shows up, Clive is shocked. He expected something like a man in black and instead, he got a rockstar.
But Clive is highly attracted to this colorful bodyguard and soon Bain proves he’s very good at his job…among other things.
Basilisk is a long novella with a sexy shapeshifter who’s stunned by his fierce attraction to an uptight accountant and the accountant who learns his lifetime of fear had good reason.
I write urban fantasy, paranormal romance and romantic suspense. Okay, and some space opera and post-apocalyptic menage as Dani Worth. I'm a lover of all kinds of romances! Some of mine (so far) are M/F, M/M/F and M/M.
Currently, I'm focusing on M/M romance because that's been my favorite for many years. I finally took the plunge in 2015 along with my good friend and co-writer, Jocelynn Drake. We are releasing long M/M romantic suspense right now (Unbreakable Bonds) and are already planning another series as well--possibly one that combines our love of MM romance with our love of urban fantasy.
I enjoy unusual stories and credit growing up in a family of curious life-lovers who moved all over the country. Books and movies full of fantasy, science fiction and romance kept us amused, especially in some of the stranger places.
I do get questions about the open series out. Beri O'Dell, Crux Survivors, The Kithran Regenesis and The Brothers Bernaux are unfortunately all on hold. That publisher is in the midst of closing so I don't know what will happen with them yet. Also, they weren't selling very well either, but I'm hoping I can self-publish the last of the stories in them at some point for the fantastic fans they do have. I'm sorry for the delay.
I’m represented by Miriam Kriss of the Irene Goodman Agency.
A really solid opener in this latest M/M paranormal romance series by Rinda Elliott.
I’ve read a quite a few bodyguard romances in my day, but I think this is the first time I’m reading a series where the bodyguards are all supernatural beings (shifters, elves, demons, etc.), hiding their true natures in the human world, usually while protecting them from bad guys and other things that go bump in the night.
Needless to say, I really enjoyed the larger series premise, especially because the supernatural MC in this first story is a basilisk shifter, which I appreciated because it’s certainly something a bit different to what I’m used to reading within this sub-genre.
I liked the characters and their backstories, the preternatural histories and world-building (so far), and the chemistry between MCs Bain (the badass basilisk bodyguard) and Clive (the skittish human in danger). But I especially liked the spin on fated mates and the few—but present enough to be promising—secondary characters (who I’m excited to read sequels about).
The romance element is sweet and sexy, but it moves pretty quickly, what with the fated mates nature of Bain and Clive’s feelings. Plus, the story is only novella length, so it may not be as juicy/angsty/fleshed-out as some readers will want—but I enjoyed it either way, zooming through the whole thing in a sitting.
If you’re looking for something fairly low-angst and fast-paced, with a good dash of action, mystery, romance, and a found family comprised of supernatural misfits, this might be a fun M/M paranormal romance to consider.
I liked this opener from Rinda Elliott for her new paranormal bodyguard romance series.
This had a nice edge to the main narrative as it involved two completely opposite personality types but also one human and one preturnatual.
Clive's spent most of his life hiding away thinking he's seeing things when he ends up in trouble due to his work as a freelance accountant.
That brings Bain into his life as his bodyguard. Bain's a basilisk, a neat choice for a paranormal being outside of the usual beings.
This is a pretty straightforward plot, I'd have liked a bit more about why Clive was put in danger, it didn't really get a proper explanation. But that's a minor niggle in what was generally a quick, easy read.
Rinda always writes great relationships and the sexual and emotional connections are always strong, thst was no exception here.
I liked seeing Clive become less agitated and more relaxed around Bain and the basilisk himself began to feel like he wouldn't be alone.
There's plenty of opportunity for more stories in this series, too, and I'm looking forward to reading those.
You know how when you read a book written by two authors, you can never tell which one is the better author? Yeah, now I know. This book was hard to read for many reasons. I wasn’t a fan of the beginning, but if it had stayed within that level of intensity I probably would have been ok. It didn’t. It went into this repetitive mess of “he’s just so cute, he’s just so adorable, I just wanna hug him and squeeze him and I don’t even know why”. There’s a scene when Clive has an interaction with a bed buddy and the dialogue was so hard to get through, so poorly written, just bad really. By the 30% mark we got hit with such a big inconsistency that I had to stop. Bain wears glasses with tinted lenses to mask his eyes because glamour and all that, his boss makes it a point to give them to him & tells them to keep them on. Clive questions Bain on said glasses because wow, he even has to wear them inside? Ok then. So one morning they wake up, look at each other, GAZE at each other, smile, and move on like nothing happened, I mean he HAD to wear the glasses for a couple of reasons right? So, what happened to the glasses? If you read past that point and know, please leave me a comment, I’m actually really curious.
I just, I could not. I couldn’t keep reading. It wasn’t holding my interest, the writing style was not up to par with other stuff I’ve read with her name attached to it, this book was clearly not for me. The devil is in the details. After it’s all said and done, my review may be a little harsh, but I opted for no rating because after all, she did co-write one of my favorite series.
I mostly give books I enjoy 4 stars because there’s always unnecessary things that I skip over, but I read every one in this book. It started out grabbing me and never let go. The main characters were great together and the story was just the right length. This is a new author to me, but I will be reading the second book.
A great start to a new series, loved it! Humans and preternaturals coexisting in the world and it’s very rare someone human sees trough the glamour of those creature’s, but Clive does and one becomes his bodyguard and they become friendly and then when Clive sees Bain’s true self, he’s scared for a few moments after shock but still falls in love with him and finds out they’re soulmates… Swoon right? The book is suspenseful, thrilling and steamy. I read this in one sitting. Bain and Clive are great together. I loved Clive and Bain! I can’t wait for Alaric’s book!
3.5⭐️A cute idea and new series opener. Bain and Clive were a good match. The plot was very angst free and didn’t have the same twists that I’m used to with this author, it was a quick read. Interested in Xavier.
Lots of sweet lust/love, but no real plot. The characters were what brought it up to a 3 as they were a bit unique and interesting. It never got past the 3 as the plot was made three? Four brief appearances and then disappeared with the villain and his motive left undeveloped and in the dark. Arrested? really? By whom? A lot of wasted potential - oh and the flow was chunky so I am assuming this is a young author. Hopefully they pay attention to feedback as there is potential here.
I enjoyed this first book in a series about preternatural who guard humans. It’s my first time reading about a basilisk shifter. It was a captivating story and a quick read. I look forward to future books in the series.
Although Rinda Elliot has co authored stories with a writer, Jocelynn Drake, on my auto read list, this is the first book I think I’ve read of hers. It’s the beginning of a new paranormal soulmates series and I enjoyed Basilisk, the first book.
The series central premise is an otherworldly security agency headed by an ancient sorcerer, Xavier, whose employees will be finding their soulmates, story by story.
Magical beings, here called Preternaturals, exist side by side with an unaware human society. There’s a vague history that is relayed by Xavier about the past and conflicts but it’s not well explored.
Basilisk is the first book and I would expect more world building from Elliott in letting the reader understand the universe in which these characters coexist. Because while beings like Bain get a wonderful description and fully developed history, he seems not to realize himself the extent of the universe he lives in despite the long years he’s lived.
And the reason why Clive Manning, human accountant, proves to be so special needs further explanation as well. I hopeful that these elements will become further developed in the stories to come.
The relationship between Clive and Bain was full of chemistry and felt believable. Although that short time and dramatic aspect of their relationship didn’t ring true towards the end of the story. Communication had been key up until then between them. And the villain got wrapped up too easily without much resolution.
I enjoyed Basilisk. I liked the characters and the series premise while thinking it needs more world building and further development. I’ll definitely be checking out the next book in the series when it’s available.
If you’re a fan of the author and this trope, definitely check out this book and series.
A new to me author but I'm already looking forward to more of this series. The way she has set up the prenaturals living among humans under glamour is interesting and I'm so delighted to see how our cryptic sorcerer continues to help his friends/employees find happiness. I will riot though if he doesn't get his own happy ending...anyway Bain is a riot, very much comfortable in his own skin while Clive is the opposite, a bit timid and someone who became a bit of a hermit who needed control in order to live with things he saw but could not understand. They complimented each other well...and that's all I have the patience to write because I want to start the next book already and KU means I can.
Pretty sure I have read this before, but as I am using kindle unlimited it is hard to tell. Nevertheless good storytelling with a dose of romantic escapism. Preternatural Bodyguard ends up together with his human accountant client in close quarters as they try to find out who is trying to kill him whilst the human learns about the existence of the real creatures he has seen throughout his life that he always assumed was a mental health symptom.
Very soon these two realise they mean more to each other than they expected.
Lovely no stress fluffy read with a few spicy scenes.
This is book 1 in a new series and features Clive, a human, and Bain, a basilisk. Bain is part of a protection agency helping to protect people. He is assigned to Clive, who is an accountant and has been receiving threatening emails. For all his life, Clive has been able to see the preternaturals and has always been scared and locked himself away at home. Bain was told to wear sunglasses when he met with Clive. This was a quick read with Clive learning that he wasn’t going crazy by seeing through glamours and soulmates. Love the world building and will definitely read more in this world.
I have read many of Rinda Elliott’s books and have enjoyed them all. This is the first book in the “Mystic Guardians” series. It had great world building and many characters you can’t wait to see get a HEA. Our first guardian is Bain. Hundreds of years old with a lonely past. Clive is our nerdy accountant that is very “special”. I love the interaction between the two along with all the steam and a great HEA. It was a quick read and I really enjoyed the overall premise for this series. I look forward to reading more in this world. I highly recommend this book. Enjoy.
The writing is very.... Young. It gives off that the author is trying very hard and wants to be passionate and thrilling but it's very high school crush.
I thought it was funny that the idea of spending their lives together for eternity wasn't a big deal, but the second Clive thought of the l word he started panicking. I would like to think that if you're planning to spend eternity with someone, you would at least understand whether or not you love them first, but I don't know. I've read worse.
Really enjoyed this paranormal romance! I enjoyed meeting the Protective Solutions crew, and I just know Xavier's gonna drive me bonkers with his vague-ness & cryptic, annoyingly opaque, nuggets of knowledge. Clive & Bain together are fire, especially Bain, when protecting Clive, and Clive, when furious at Bain. That part, I think, is my favorite. Ticked off little human, lookout! Looking forward to the rest of the series & the other human mates heading their way, to flip lives and worlds upside down, spin their heads, and fill their hearts and lives with love.
Fun... ish? Honestly, I was expecting to get sucked in a lot more based on the previous collab I've read from this author. This story was kind of simplistic, though, and I found myself skimming through the last half and kind of bored with it. I'll still check out the next book since it's out, but more as a time filler while I wait for a few upcoming releases than because I'm invested in the series 🤷♀️
An interesting paranormal mating book between a human and a basilisk where the human thinks he is insane because he has always seen creatures no one else has, and the basilisk thinks he is doomed to a long life alone because basilisks don't have mates. The connection they feel is surprising but confusing to the two of them and all overshadowed by the fact that they are meeting as bodyguard and client. A good read and interesting opener to a series!
My reviews are my own. If you liked this book, I’m glad you enjoyed it. If not, I respect your opinion. This is merely my opinion, so let's keep it courteous. My review is honest and voluntary.
The story was entertaining but a bit deceiving. At first, it felt serious, but then it suddenly turned into a cheesy romance. It is not awful, not as mature as I expected.
A sharp-dressed snake shifter (basilisk) meets a human and they fall hard and fast. More soulmates in the future as everyone in the office will eventually get struck by Cupid’s arrow.
There was a lot of character development disguised as monologuing, would be better to show rather than force a character to tell.
I just discovered this author and I am so very glad I did. It was unusual to read about a basilisk having his own romance, and Bain and Clive were perfect for each other. I can’t wait to read about Alaric’s soulmate appearing, because he definitely deserves it.
Good world building, Bain and Clive are great together, definitely an opposites attract from a personality viewpoint. My only complaint is the resolution of the risk to Clive happened off page. I would like to have seen that and how Bain and Alaric would fare against a “powerful wizard.” Looking forward to the next book.
A great start to a new series. Interesting plot, enchanting characters and a mixed world where preternaturals are a secret from human society. Bain and Clive didn't have an easy courtship as Bain was hiding a pretty big secret and someone wanted Clive gone. Through all the action these two managed to fall in love though.
2.5 This was terribly cliche and generic. There s nothing to the story that hooks you in or makes you care. They have sexy thoughts the second they see eachother, the whole story is them being in lust towards eachother.
I thought this book could have been so much more than it was. I enjoyed the story, but for me, it dragged a little. Clive and Bain were both likeable characters and the plot idea was good, but I just wanted more from them. 3.5 stars
Loved the two Mcs. Bain especially I liked that he didn't fit the mold of the usual bodyguard character. Could have done without the big misunderstanding at the end but it was resolved quickly. Overall, really enjoyed it.
I light and simple read. Didn't change my life but I enjoyed it. I take one star because the coversations between Clive and Bain were at times really really stiff, and because the "issues" at the end of the book felt forced.
I liked the characters in this story. So glad for the HEA. Didn’t mind there were no M/F relationships, just to people finding themselves and each other.
