From New York Times bestselling author Mary Kay Andrews comes a charming holiday romance about a newly single thirtysomething whose unauthorized vacation rental turns into a hilarious game of hide-and-seek when the new owner unexpectedly shows up.
Tilly Farriday isn’t feeling very jolly this season. Recently divorced and broke, she’s squatting in one of her rental agency’s properties until her new home is ready. The sprinkles on top of the burnt Christmas cookie that is her life? The new owner shows up early, forcing Tilly to hide in the attic to save her job…and what remains of her dignity.
George Holloway is here to sell his granduncle’s house—and to reconsider whether he and his fiancée are right for each other. Amid home repairs, George notices strange noises and missing food, but as much as he gets his rental agent on the phone, Tilly dodges every invitation to meet. He’s sure that someone’s here with him, and it’s certainly not the Ghost of Christmas Past, Present, or Future.
As Tilly and George circle each other, they both wonder where their lives are headed and if, maybe, meeting each other is just the Christmas miracle they need.

This story was a little disappointing as it has such a festive vibe to it with the title and cover but it isn't a holiday read at all. It just so happens to be the end of December as Julie is hiding out in a rental cottage the real estate office she works for takes care of. When the owner of the house dies and his nephew comes calling Tillie has to hide in the attic.
I had a couple of issues with this story. I don't believe anyone with a job and family like Tillie's would have to do this. A judge isn't going to give an ex-husband the entire house she paid for without some sort of compensation. Tillie wouldn't stay at a rental place of her place of employment and not ask for help from friends and family. Even if she had to sleep on the floor for two weeks in the midterm. The insta-love after both of them just got out of a relationship (in fact he is still in a relationship even though it is a bad one) didn't work for me either. This was just a flop all around. I have never read this author before and now I know why.
I'm not entirely sure what Amazon short story collection this is from. If you know please let me know in the comments.
Tilly Farriday works for a Vacation Rental Agency. Newly divorced and needing a place to stay for just a few weeks, she and her dog, Smoosh are squatting in a property that wasn’t rented over the holidays.
What she didn’t know was that the Owner had recently passed away, so when George Holloway arrives to determine what will need to be done to prepare the property for Sale, she has to rush up to the attic to hide.
Does she really believe she will be able to sneak downstairs when George is sleeping and cook bacon 🥓 and walk her dog undetected? 😆
George calls his rental agent on the phone, to discuss the strange things he has noticed but obviously, Tilly has to dodge his suggestions to meet.
But Fate has other plans.
Cute enough for a quick read, but it didn’t really have much of a holiday vibe!

I side with the OW in this. I hope she finds a better guy then this douchebag who was with her up to the 88% point but hated her and treated her like crap and admitted he was only with her because she was out of his league (meaning hot and successful). Yet the author attempts to feed off of the reader’s internalized misogyny to make us hate this OW Vanessa and think the poor hero is with a terrible woman. When in reality he didn’t like her yet stayed with her for two years, got engaged to her, made promises to her and let her down countless times. She justifiably got mad at him and became a nag (that’s what happens when your partner is incompetent) and the author wants us to feel sorry for HIM.
Honestly, fuck this guy. If you don’t like your girlfriend, let her go. Using her for what she can do for you ie organize your life, make you a better dude, when you don’t even like her as a person is shit behaviour.
And the minute he breaks it off with her, the heroine jumps in his lap and the book is over. Like she had just left the driveway and they started going at it and then THE END.
I’ll say it again JUSTICE FOR VANESSA. Spare me from these Christmas books vilifying other women to make the heroine look good. Also the heroine was a total hot mess so the hero just doesn’t like successful women and needs a basket case so he can white knight for her.
She better not get her shit together because dudes like this like a dependant woman.
Other than my beef 👆, this was really short and the concept was silly. At least the dude was the one who came back to his home town from his big city career this time so there was that.
Trouble seems to find Matilda ‘Tilly’ Farriday without her even looking for it!
She left her husband six months ago, was kicked out of her apartment because of her cute dog, Smoosh, and her new place isn’t available until January.
That’s not all.
She’s resorted to trespassing; living in a vacant home belonging to Piney Point’s richest citizen, a 96-year-old miserable old man.
The worst part?
If she’s caught in ‘The Crowe’s Nest’, her ex-husband, Denis, who is the town sheriff, would be happy to lock her up.
Denis is the least of her worries - Sticks Holloway has returned to Piney Point.
This was a fantastic holiday novella exploring the humour of Christmas miracles! I was completely absorbed in the story and rooting for Tilly. I laughed and I swooned and concluded that this would make a great movie.
I can always count on Mary Kay Andrews to make me laugh!
I was gifted this copy by Amazon Original Stories and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
the setup… Tilly Farriday thinks she’s found the perfect solution to her current housing dilemma. Newly divorced and broke since she’s spent her last dollars on a new apartment after being evicted because of her dog Smoosh, Tilly is spending the two weeks in Crowe’s Nest, one of her rental agency’s vacant properties until her new place is ready. The house hasn’t been rented in over a year so what’s the risk? Well…just so happens that the owner’s great nephew, George Holloway has suddenly shown up!
the heart of the story… What are the odds something like this would happen, especially at Christmas time? It was as funny as it appears as Tilly hides away in the attic, trying to find a way out of the situation, bearing in mind she had nowhere else to go. It was a comedy of errors as George finds evidence that things are disappearing and Tilly is trying to elude him.
the narration… Eva Kaminsky, one of my favorites, delivered her typical great performance. Loved her as Tilly and she showed her comedic storytelling skills.
the bottom line… There’s a romance that develops but it’s not the insta love that is implied. I was looking for a light-hearted Christmas story and this was delightful. It’s a gem of a short story, just enough to whet my appetite.
Did I expect worse or wasn't it up to my expectations? Idk.
I've been reading so many different reviews regarding MKA’s books that I had to try for myself, and the result is that I liked it but, at the same time, there’s something that doesn't sit right with me.
Short stories are always tricky because many of them have potential but lack the space to grow, so maybe that's exactly what this was.
↠ 3 stars
Thanks to Amazon Original Stories and NetGalley, who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest opinion.
I picked this one because it sounds exactly like a Hallmark holiday movie I once saw. I don’t remember the name, but it’s not important because the storyline is the same. The book summary pretty much lays out this whole short story. The one thing the book summary doesn’t say is that Tilly and George actually went to school together (20yrs ago) and were both in Glee club. They also had secret crushes on each other. This was a funny and cute little holiday story that was enjoyable.
Holiday Hideaway was such a great way to kick off the season with winter holiday reads and vibes! It’s free to read now on Amazon Prime Reading!
🎄 ❄️🎁 2024 Holiday Read 🎄❄️🎁
This pairs well with a steaming cup of hot chocolate, fuzzy socks, a cozy blanket, and a winter chill at the window. I giggled. I smiled. I held my breath. I was completely lost in this hilarious holiday novella. 😄
When Tilly hits rock bottom in her life and finds herself humiliatingly hiding out in one of the rental properties of the real estate company she works for, her perfect plan goes to shreds when a handsome man shows up to claim, remodel, and resell the property. But the wintry air holds promises of love and memories of the past. There’s snow! There’s a dog! Not to mention, Tilly is just so relatable!
“A New England winter sent plenty of locals down to Florida, but Tilly had always loved her hometown this time of year—the white lights, the cool blue of the sky, and the short days that made it okay to hide away inside with a good book.”
Decorated with the perfect amount of Hallmark charm/quality and all the holiday fixings, it was so entertaining following along with Tilly throughout her dilemma. It was such a stress-free, fun, light-hearted, and relaxing read. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for more of Mary Kay Andrew’s work in the future!
Starting my 2024 holiday reads a little later than normal. This was a quick and sweet holiday novella. Cute story and likable characters except for George’s fiancée. 3.5 stars rounded up. 🎄
Fun and unusual premise for a holiday short story. High school classmates reunite in a different way and ends on a positively delightful note. I enjoyed the narrator and thought she did a great job with the voices. I borrowed it on from Prime Reading for the Kindle and Audible.
Spoilers, but read anyways because you don’t need to read this short story lol.
I enjoy a story about being stuck together for the holidays, but talking trash on your fiancé from the second you arrive is where it ended for me. She didn’t do anything except be a boss. The main characters are the villains here. Missing your fiancés biggest work event of the year and avoiding her calls while she’s worried sick only for her to drive all the way to your small town for you to break up with her all while your playing house with your high school ~crush~ is SICK 🤢😭
A fun little holiday rom-com! The book is cute and bingeable, but my true crime brain had a hard time wrapping my head around it not being creepy 😅 I thought the pacing was good for a novella until the ending. I got to the last page and kept scrolling for more! It was a little too rushed in the end, so that’s why I gave it this rating. I enjoyed it though !
More. I wanted so much more. I really didn't want this cute novella to end. Heartwarming, wonderful and just what a Christmas novella should be, except I wanted more.
Tilly Farriday is not having a good Christmas Season. She is recently divorced, low on funds and basically homeless. Since she works for a property management company, she is staying in one of the rentals that hasn't been rented for some time, without her boss knowing. When someone shows up, she hides in the attic, she really has no other place she can go.
George Holloway is one of the new owners of the Crowe's Nest, inherited from his great-uncle. He is there to access to property, make repairs and put it on the market. He is also there to avoid his almost fiancée. While inspecting the roof, George falls and breaks his ankle. Tilly can't just leave him unconscious with a broken ankle, so she takes him to the hospital.
that was cute, george is the kind of guy you'd want to protect at all costs, the cute little doggie was my favourite in this 🐕✨, it didn't scream holiday but still it was fine, the text exchanges were hilarious!, it was a delightful little read and the romance between tilly and george is as sweet as a candy cane 🍬❤️!
A cute and festive rom-com. It is an easy, enjoyable read with a creative meet-cute. It isn't overly Christmasy so it can be read and enjoyed any time of the year.🎄🎁
This story is about a recently divorced rental agent called Tilly who is ‘borrowing’ one of her company’s rental properties over the two week Christmas period as she is broke and struggling to make ends meet. Unfortunately, her plan is fouled when the homeowner dies and his nephew George (who Tilly happened to go to high school with) shows up to get the old house ready for sale.
Romantic hi-jinx ensues.
This is a novella of about 70 or so pages, and so is easy to squeeze in to any schedule, adding a touch of holiday spirit to your reading. No Pulitzers here, but an entertaining story and fun way to spend a couple of hours on a snowy evening. Which is exactly what I did. 🎄
I thought this was super cute! I loved the hilarity of the story with a woman hiding in the attic of an old house when the owner arrives. This was very sweet.
Fast, quirky sweet, and effective for what it is. I liked it!
It made me chuckle plenty of times and had me rooting for the main character in less minutes than most books can make me do in 5 hours.
If you're looking for something short and cosy with a side-dish of sweetness: This works well.
It's not exactly very Christmasy, to be honest, but that makes it subtile for all year around, to be honest. Because it's really short, I didn't really mind. I thought it was fun and cute.
i’m usually not a big holiday book girlie but for some reason that’s exactly what i’m in the mood for rn but this was just ... meh.
it wasn’t really a romance, wasn’t really a gen fic, like idk what this was even trying to be or what the point of the story was. i didn’t really like either of the characters, especially the mmc because why did he treat his now ex like total shit the entire time.
but this literally took me an hourish to read and is the first book i’ve finished in a month so three stars even though it’s probably more like a 2/2.5.
Piney Point a small coastal town. Tilly works for a vacation rental company and she's having a wave of bad luck. She's recently divorced from the sheriff, who took everything, was kicked out of the apartment she was living because of her beloved dog Smoosh, her new place will only be available in January, and she's broke. So she's staying in Crowe's Nest one of the rental houses for 2 weeks now when a jeep stops at the front. She runs to the bedroom, takes all her stuff and goes to the attic but forgot the groceries in the kitchen.
A man walks in with a key so he must be family and calls the rental and she answers. He's George great-nephew of the owner now deceased and comes to prepare the house to be sell ASAP. She can't get out because he's staying. The next day she tries to run away when we went to town but her car didn't start, so she returns to the same place. When he's coming down from the roof he falls from the ladder 20 feet to the ground and hits hard, not moving and she has no choice but to take him to the hospital. He got some stiches in his head and a cast in his fractured ankle and can't put any weight on it for two weeks.
She already knows who he really his, George Holloway from high school and they sang together in the glee club. He knew too she was there because he noticed food was missing and mice do not cook bacon in the microwave and when he had her car towed! She comes clean with him, stays to help, and convinces him to upgrade the house instead of selling it right away. He confesses he head a crush on her back then, when he was bullied and nicknamed sticks! He was very smart and entered the MIT with 16 years-old! Now he's a hot, well muscled man, rich, with he's own company and doesn't want to go back to Boston and ends everything with his overbearing fiancée.
Will Tilly and George have their own HEA in the future?
I loved this short story and the most original funny/hilarious text messages banter!
Too short to rate but super cute for the beginning of the holiday season. I enjoyed listening to this one while trying to relax on this Sunday. It was lighthearted , cute , and just what I needed.
ℋ𝑜𝓁𝒾𝒹𝒶𝓎 ℋ𝒾𝒹𝑒𝒶𝓌𝒶𝓎 by Mary Kay Andrews is a delightful and witty short story that I thoroughly enjoyed. What immediately drew me in was the cute little backstory between the two main characters—they share a history that made up for a sweet reunion, once they recognized each other from their past.
Adding to the charm of the story is the adorable dog named “Smoosh,” who steals the spotlight in many scenes, adding a playful and heartwarming element. The fact that the story is told from both the female and male main characters’ points of view makes it feel well-rounded, allowing us to connect with each of their perspectives.
The humor throughout is spot-on, especially in the text message exchanges between the two leads. These moments are sharp, funny, and add a modern touch to the romance. The witty banter between them kept me smiling, making this a light, feel-good read that’s perfect for the holiday season.
I only felt that the first 70% of the book was flowing very well, with a good pace, but then the author rushed it and I would’ve loved to get more of the backstory of the FMC and MMC during their school years and during the glee club, which is where they met.
Overall, Holiday Hideaway is a charming story that balances humor, romance, and a touch of nostalgia. Mary Kay Andrews packs a lot of heart into this short tale, making it a cute and quick escape.
Thanks to Netgalley, Amazon Short Stories and the author for the ARC! 🎄
