Dear Summer : Part B

Rate this book
Summer Average Girl? Don't Believe The Hype. It's the mid-to-late 1990s in NYC. Pagers buzz with urgent messages, oversized hoop earrings glint in the streetlights, and every corner vibrates with the pulse of hip hop. Summer Rayne Williams might look like your average teenager, but behind her cool facade, Summer's life is a powder keg waiting to explode.

Secretly, she's the daughter of a powerful drug kingpin, a truth hidden behind a carefully constructed facade of normalcy. It's a legacy that seems to follow her, drawing her into relationships with boys whose charm masks a dangerous world of drug deals, street violence, and shifting loyalties.

Betrayals cut deep when those she trusts most shatter her world. Murder becomes a chilling reality, leaving scars on her soul. She even faces down the NYPD, their rough tactics pushing her to the edge. And through it all, Summer struggles to maintain her footing, battling to be an average girl in a world that keeps pulling her into the darkness.

Expelled from high school, caught in a web of secrets and lies, Summer Rayne must fight to hold onto her own identity and carve out a future amidst the chaos.

This isn't your typical teenage drama. Dear Summer is a raw, gritty, and unapologetically real story that will grab you by the throat and leave you breathless.

This is Part B to Book 1, you need Part A prior to reading this.

I read book A wrote a review and I can't find it.. I'm just gonna rewrite it along with book B.

This book had me hooked from the first page. It bought me back to my teenage hood, having friends that you love like family, Sharon secrets with them and keeping their secrets.. this book took me way back. The Author did an excellent job for a first time Author she really kept me interested intrigued couldn't wait to get to the next chapter. I'm really looking for more books from this author. I definitely will be reading them.

The author quite literally continued Part A of this series. I was expecting a time jump, but nope. It literally picked up with Summer walking into the house (and it also started with Chapter 8, not 1).

There were entirely too many details in this book. After a while, I started skipping past all of the home and store descriptions, and even the people Summer was describing. None of it moved the story along in any way. In fact, it probably would've taken off at least 100 pages of this extremely long book.

Another thing I didn't like was how slow the story was progressing. Day by day for long periods, and every now and again, some weeks may go by. Summer was still 15 years old and in the 10th grade for the majority of this book. We left Part A with her being 15 and in the 10th grade. I understand it's a book about her life as a teenager coming into her own, and set in the 90s, but each and every single day of her life is a bit much.

I was hoping there'd eventually be a plot to this story. Unfortunately, it wasn't...until the very last page. I was NOT expecting that plot twist! However, it was the perfect set up for the next installment. It sucks to have to read over 700 pages and be left with a cliffhanger, but hopefully, it'll get released this year (and be the LAST installment - I mean, come on. We're already over 1000 pages into this story. Let's move this thing along.)

If the author focuses solely on the storyline and not get too caught up in the details, it could be the raw, gritty, urban fiction that I'm sure many readers were hoping to read when selecting these books.

Surprisingly, I'm still invested. YES, I will be reading the third installment whenever it drops lol.

"Dear Summer" is a gripping read. This urban fiction novel stands out from the crowd, given its rich, epic saga-like quality and coming-of-age narrative. Set in Brooklyn, it traces the life of a young girl, capturing her growth and experiences in a captivating, raw manner reminiscent of iconic works like "The Coldest Winter Ever" and "B-More Careful".

What truly sets "Dear Summer" apart is its depth, spanning various facets of life, relationships, and personal struggles. The character development is impressive, making readers invest emotionally in the protagonist's journey. The vivid, authentic portrayal of Brooklyn adds an extra layer of engagement, making it almost impossible to put down.

It's not just a story; it’s an immersive experience. The pacing keeps you on your toes, and the narrative flow is seamless, ensuring you're hooked from start to finish. For fans of urban fiction seeking more than just a quick read, "Dear Summer" is a refreshing and enjoyable dive into the genre. Can't wait to see where the rest of the series goes!

I will say this.... Coya did a great job, but you can tell she is building an immersive world. This is a slow burn/build of character development. If you are looking for extremely fast pace this isn't the book for you. You will get to learn the characters, and it's a very character driven, conversational book. She does a great job of non-cringe for the age of the characters, I very much felt like I was reading a diary. I am happy I am starting from the beginning of the bricks laying. I love Summer Rayne and everything that comes with this world. The ending I was not expecting, but she is building as I said. I am looking forward to more from Coya.
