Having met the writer of this book at an Ozarks Romance Author's conference, I thought I'd give it a shot, when I spotted it on the clearance rack of my favorite used book store. I do not normally read romance novels (especially not the little periodical paperbacks like what Heartsong Presents publishes)--mostly because I consider them "chick porn," eliciting the same emotional longing for something else in women that girly magazines stimulate among men.
SPINNING OUT OF CONTROL was a pleasant change of pace from what I usually consume. Although in many ways predictable and simplistic, this historical novel did tackle the topics of slavery and the Underground Railroad, death in childbirth, alcoholism and related abuse, the tough challenges of pioneer living, etc. I enjoyed the gradual change in Kathryn and Micah's opinions of one another, once they got past the shock of their unexpected encounter. It was also sweet to watch Kathryn wrestle with the issues of her past and see that God was real and truly loved her.
I'd recommend this book especially for someone looking for light reading during a road trip or on the bus or over the lunch hour at work. Ms. McDonough does a fine job of making you feel you're actually living the life of a nineteenth century Virginian, while addressing some issues that are still relevant today.
I love this book so much. It's quite a short and great inspirational story. And I really love the way the author portrayed the setting, along with the characters. And my favorite character would be the heroine, who despite all the problems she faced in her past, accepted the challenge to care for and protect Kathryn sweet little girls.
