A DEADLY OATH
Powerful men within the Vatican’s Santa Alleanza, the most discreet and deadly intelligence service in the world, are monitoring Harveen’s activities in southern India. Now that she is on the cusp of a discovery that could shake the very foundations of the Christian religion, they mobilize to bury the truth once again – and this time, they will make sure it is buried forever.
✨ What a thrilling read it was! I didn't want to put this book down for a bit hats off to the writing style. The author amazingly intertwines dual timelines of 72 AD and 2024 and multiple POVs which didn't feel confusing at all and added so much depth to the story. The pacing was consistent ✨While reading Harveen's journey of unravelling the truth I was like- 😧😧😧😧😧😧 when she faced the adversities throughout her journey. Not just the physical one but complexity with morals as well. I was so hooked and I wanted to know What would happen next so I kept on saying to myself let's read one more chapter late at night because I won't hurt, right? ✨Character arcs didn't feel forced. ✨ Many times I found myself wanting to go into the book and experience the vivid and picturesque atmosphere around the Ancient Port of India, Rome, Italy and Jerusalem. I just wanted to be there. ✨I loved Jayesh's story as well and I love it when historical aspects related to such events come to light. ✨The Climax at the end was *EVERYTHING*. I didn't expect it at all. The element of "curse" in this story is so amazing and makes this a worthwhile read.
✨It's a perfect blend of mystery, history and supernatural genres and a blend of real and fictional elements and I highly recommend this one.
The Curse of Muziris by Hamish Morjaria is such a captivating read! The story revolves around an archaeological discovery and features three points of view—Jayesh (from the past), Harveen, and Don (from the present).
I love books with short chapters, so I was glad this was one of them. Even though the book has over 400 pages, it was a quick read!
Out of the three main characters, I liked Don the most, mainly because he recognized that his methods for achieving his goals were not right and was trying to find a way to correct them. Harveen and Jayesh, though from different centuries, shared some similarities—both worked tirelessly toward their goals, regardless of the consequences. I wasn’t entirely fond of Harveen’s recklessness, but I’m glad everything worked out in the end.
This book is packed with suspense and a lot of history. The last 100 pages are the most gripping! Jayesh’s story concludes here, but I hope Harveen’s and/or Don’s stories will continue in the future. I must also mention that this book gave me strong Dan Brown vibes.
Overall, it’s a great read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I’d recommend it to anyone who loves historical fiction, archaeology, Dan Brown novels, and suspenseful stories.
I thank the publisher for providing me with a review copy of this fantastic book!
It's a riveting novel that combines history, mystery, and suspense. Dr. Harveen Gill, an archaeologist, embarks on a mission to find the ancient, fabled Port of Muziris, which is said to have vanished centuries ago. Her search uncovers a relic linked to a devastating past, and as she follows clues across historical sites in Egypt, Rome, and Jerusalem, she unknowingly puts herself on a collision course with powerful forces within the Vatican. Their deadly interest in her discoveries reveals a secret so significant that they will do anything to ensure it remains buried.
Hamish Morjaria has done an excellent job of blending rich historical detail with modern-day intrigue. The way he has weaved together the ancient world and contemporary events felt seamless, and it was easy to get invested into this book despite the shifting time periods and settings.
What stood out most to me was the way there was a constant tension that lingered throughout the story. The stakes feel real and urgent. The edgy plot kept me turning pages, wondering what's going to happen next! I thoroughly enjoyed this historical fiction thriller. The mystery surrounding the Port of Muziris and the relic at its heart is captivating, and the author has taken proper care into making it an unforgettable reading experience.
A historical thriller that feels like reality but when you reach the last page, you realise that it was all a fictional story that kept you intrigued, entertained and engaged. And how your innocence could save your life. In short, a book that made you realise that fictional world is a profoundly picturesque experience. Well, that’s my experience with this book.
The curse of Muziris explores the story of a Trader in 72AD and an archeologist (Dr. Harveen Gill) in 2024. I loved the character Of Dr. Harveen. She was coded with an alluring, admirable and innocent aura. She’s looking to uncover a secret that sustains the capacity to shock the entire world in the most unpredictable manner. Because that secret is cerebrally connected to Christianity. But a thriller is incomplete without a plot twist. So, our protagonist is being tracked by the powerful men of The Vatican. And there starts a gripping game of Discovery, dedication and determination.
Jayesh’s story was amazing as well but more than 72 AD.. I enjoyed the happenings of 2024. The writing style is simple, straightforward and easy. It kept me intrigued with the “What’ll happen next?” Of the story. Now, if you’re interested in reading a historical thriller then my friend go and grab your copy as soon as possible. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
I first came upon the story of Muziris and its disappearance in Sethu’s novel ‘The Saga of Muziris’. Since then, this once-magnificent port town that sank without a trace has captivated me. So when I noticed Hamish Morjaria’s ‘The Curse of Muziris’ I wasted no time in reading it.
Spread a little over 400 pages, the story is bifurcated into 2 timelines and has 3 threads. The book begins in the first timeline, which is around 72 AD, the era of Muziris, where we are introduced to Jayesh and Nannan, who are burying something in a vault, wishing it never be found again due to the havoc it creates. The story then cuts to the present time where we have the other 2 threads of the story - one follows Harveen Gill, an accomplished archaeologist and her team who are on a dig in Pattanam, Kerala, where Muziris was supposed to have flourished. The second thread revolves around Don who is part of the Vatican’s secret intelligence service, Santa Alleanza. Harveen is racing to find as much as she can about Muziris, which includes certain truths that the Vatican does not want to be revealed to the world.
I liked how Morjaria has used Muziris as the anchor point and branched out to explore liminal points in history. Did Jesus have a twin brother named Thomas? Does the Ark of the Covenant really exist? Morjaria breathes life into stories that continue to be furiously debated by archaeologists and historians alike, and takes us on a very vividly imagined journey into the past. I thoroughly enjoyed the setting, and the recreation of real characters blended seamlessly with fictional ones that made Muziris come alive. Being a history buff myself I could see that Morjaria has done his research carefully and read widely to tie in multiple elements, ancient settings, and timelines in history so that they merge into one well-connected story.
And then, there were these aspects that I wish he had paid a little more attention to. I see an almost boyish adoration of Lara Croft (she is even mentioned in the book) and Indiana Jones whose influences are unmistakable in various places. For example, Harveen is a cliched representation of archaeologists straight from the movies with her shorts and khakis and boots. We know bits and parts of some characters but nothing about others. And the little we know seems fragmented and they don’t add much to the story. Don is perhaps the most realistic character of all with some layers to his thoughts and persona. Character building, the experience the key archaeologists claim to have, their individual stories, and some other aspects leave a lot to be desired.
That said, it’s the real history and the pace of the story that kept me flipping the pages, eager to know what’s next. Undoubtedly, the writing and story both come into their own in the last 100 pages or so. Here’s where it appears as if Morjaria gave his writing the most attention, building up the tension, taking us towards the much-awaited conclusion. For a debut novel, the overall effect was impressive.
Recommended for a thrilling read and for those who love history’s mysteries.

My 💭: [30/10/24 7.17PM]
Whoa I feel like I have crash landed to reality after being on an edge-of-seat adventure spanning time and place. I love it when a book isn't just constrained to one genre and has bits of everything in it. Author @ham has done a really amazing job of smoothly mixing up everything and presented this tale to us.
To thoroughly enjoy and understand the story, you have to relish it slowly and throughly with patience. Because, there's A LOT of details in each of those chapters. I hate hate hate myself for being such an impatient reader - I simply kept wanting to see the twists at a faster rate. But, the slowburn pace of the story leads to a terrific revelation at the end, which makes all of it worth it 🙌.
In a true Dan Brown-esque narration, the story is told from multiple pov - Dr Harveen Gill who's our heroine and the lead of an archaeologist group, Jayesh who's a Muziri tradesman and significant person from loooong past around whom the whole story rests and finally, the person who may or may not have sinister plans for Dr Gill in order to keep her new discovery from the world's eyes. Very expectedly, I enjoyed the narration of the sinister person the most 🙈. I found Harveen very hard to like - she seemed to exude this manic energy all the time and it seemed like she was doing it all only for a promotion at work. So, I was kind of happy with what happened at the end 😬! Trust me, this is not a spoiler 😜.
Readers, those of you who enjoyed Dan Brown's Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code, you would definitely enjoy this read. The ending twist came SO out of the blue with a spooky factor 🤯! And obviously, to my immense pleasure, the Vatican City people proved to be as nefarious in the story as I had imagined.
The more I read these kinds of treasure hunting thrillers set in India, the more I get intrigued about my country's history. I know this is fiction, but what if, there are stuff like this hidden and waiting to be discovered? I am getting goosebumps!
A legendary port, Muziris. A secret buried deep into the sand of time. A secret that was carefully concealed years and years ago. AD 72, a trader from the fabled city of Muziris concealed a relic that caused widespread devastation. Years after that, a torrential rain threatens to uncover the secrets lurking deep into the mud. As Dr. Harveen Gill sets out to prove her worth to Kerala State Archeology Department by finding the location of the legendary port of Muziris, she comes in close contact with uncovering the secrets and finding the truth. But sinister forces are behind her, will Dr. Harveen be able to survive the onslaught as her team trails through history?
'The Curse Of Muziris' is a historical mystery that takes us through a dual timeline adventure, one part set in AD 72 and the other in present day Kerala, where archaeologist Dr. Harveen Gill is on a mission to uncover the truth about the lost port. Harveen’s quest isn’t just about proving herself, it’s about chasing a secret buried for centuries. As the story unfolds, we travel through India, Egypt, Rome, and Jerusalem, uncovering secrets that could shake the very foundations of faith. What makes this book stand out is the setting. The monsoon drenched landscapes of Kerala, the hidden relics, and the rich historical connections make for a thrilling read, I thoroughly enjoyed the plot. I like the character sketches but I found them a little underdeveloped since this is a plot driven book. Although I read this book in warmer months, it is a perfect read for monsoon season as well.
Coming to the writing. Throughout the book, it kept me at edge. The pacing kept me glued to the pages and just when I thought I've figured it all out, another twist pulled me back in. The writing style is good, simple but intriguing. It’s got the intrigue of 'The Da Vinci Code' but with a fresh, Indian backdrop that adds a whole new layer of excitement. If you enjoy historical thrillers with a bit of conspiracy, mystery and a bit of adrenaline, this one is for you.
There are certain books where every page feels dense, and then there are some where you read 100 pages and feel like you haven't touched the tip of it yet. The Curse of Muziris falls in the latter.
If Dan Brown and Ashwin Sanghi came together to write a book, the result would be a plot like The Curse of Muziris. All you people who love a good thriller iron-clad in history and mythology and religion; this one's for you!
Set in the ancient port city of Muziris, Mojaria vividly brings to life India’s role in the Roman spice trade. He paints a picture of Muziris as a vibrant, bustling port teeming with merchants, sailors, and travelers from across the world. I could almost smell the spices and hear the chatter of traders.
The plot centers around a mysterious artifact believed to be cursed. Oscillating between the present and the past, through multiple POVs, Mojaria manages to deftly draw linears to the artifact's origin and history and present-day research and excavation. There's enough intrigue maintained throughout as forces are at work to overthrow the search.
I loved how Mojaria combines historical details with speculative elements, creating an intriguing mystery that feels both grounded and fantastical. However, I found myself wishing that certain aspects of the curse and its origin were explored more deeply.
The character development felt natural, and I appreciated that Mojaria didn’t rush through their arcs. The conflicts they face aren’t just physical but often moral, adding a layer of complexity that gives the story more depth.
The Curse of Muziris was the perfect blend of mystery, history, and a dash of the supernatural that had me turning pages as fast as I could. It’s the kind of book that transports you to another time and place. If you love Dan Brown books, Hamish Mojaria is the one you should be adding to your lists next!
The Curse of Muziris by Hamish Morjaria ⭐ Rating: 4/5
Hamish Morjaria’s The Curse of Muziris is a historical thriller that feels like a cinematic experience translated into words. It’s an enthralling journey that expertly merges the intrigue of ancient history with the suspense of modern-day mysteries.
What Worked for Me: The story is captivating, with unexpected twists that kept me glued to the pages. The narrative’s dual timeline—spanning the ancient port city of Muziris and a present-day archaeological hunt—unfolds beautifully, pulling you deeper into its mysteries.
The characters of Jayesh, the ancient trader guarding a dangerous relic, and Dr. Harveen Gill, the archaeologist uncovering secrets centuries later, were standout highlights. They’re written with such depth and nuance that you can’t help but root for them. The historical elements, blended with the thrill of the chase, had me gasping and, at times, exclaiming, What the actual…?!
Reading this while traveling through Kerala added another layer of magic, the descriptions of Muziris and the region felt alive, as if the book were a portal into another world.
What Could’ve Been Better: While the core story is gripping, the sheer number of subplots occasionally felt overwhelming, making certain parts of the narrative feel cluttered. The supporting characters lacked the same depth as the protagonists, and the antagonists, while intriguing, didn’t quite live up to the intensity of the story. They felt more like an afterthought in a tale brimming with potential.
Overall: Despite a few missteps, The Curse of Muziris is an immersive, jaw-dropping read for fans of historical thrillers. If you enjoy stories where ancient secrets and modern discoveries collide, this is the book for you. Highly recommended for readers looking for a story that lingers long after the last page is turned.
Some books are fun, some teach you something, and an occasional few make you do both—while leading you down a never-ending Google rabbit hole. The Curse of Muziris is one such exciting book. Flipping through its pages, I found myself searching up lost ports, ancient trade routes, and secret Vatican societies. If a book can get you to doubt history, it's doing something right. The book interweaves two thrilling stories. Jayesh, a merchant, in 72 AD keeps a deadly relic under wraps which will annihilate everything that comes its way. Dr. Harveen Gill, a determined archaeologist, in 2024 is in search of the vanished port city of Muziris. But the more she excavates, the nearer she gets to exploring a secret so explosive that the Vatican's sinister Santa Alleanza will go to any lengths to keep it buried. The stand out about this book is the way it interweaves fact and fiction so skillfully that the distinction becomes blurred. It took me back to the days of reading The Da Vinci Code —thrilled and unsettled, trying to guess how much of this might actually be true. The writing is relentless, with brief, punchy chapters that keep you on the edge of your seat. The historical facts are so engrossing that I found myself stopping to look things up again and again, only to plunge back into the story, ravenous for the next plot turn. Harveen is a very interesting protagonist, though her impulsiveness made me want to shake her from time to time. Jayesh's tale, despite being centuries removed, was equally pressing and compelling. The finale? Totally surprising. If you enjoy historical thrillers that are uncomfortably real, then this book is for you. Paced rapidly, thoroughly researched, and completely addictive The Curse of Muziris is a must-read for anyone who's interested in history, mystery, and the hidden secrets beneath our past.
What if the shadows of an ancient curse still linger, waiting for the right moment to claim those who dare to uncover its secrets?
The Curse of Muziris is a gripping historical thriller that intertwines the present and the past, offering a masterful dual timeline exploration of the ancient port city of Muziris. The story follows a modern-day archaeologist, Dr.Harveen Gill and Jayesh, an ancient Muziris trader (AD 72).
The novel intertwines a compelling narrative of lost treasures, ancient myths, and the quest for a powerful relic. It is a captivating blend of historical fiction, mystery, and adventure. The dual timeline narrative is expertly crafted, jumping between ancient Muziris and present-day Kodungallur,Kerala.
Morjaria’s prose is lush and atmospheric, painting vivid pictures of Muziris as a bustling, cosmopolitan port, thriving with activity from the trade of spices, especially pepper and other goods. The historical accuracy is impressive, with the author carefully blending real events with fictionalized elements, breathing life into a period and place that is not often explored in literature.
The story unfolds with layers of intrigue, as it intertwines past and present events seamlessly. The author masterfully weaves together historical elements with a gripping mystery, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. The pacing is consistent, with each chapter revealing just enough to hook the readers without overwhelming them.
The supernatural element of the "curse" surrounding Muziris adds an intriguing dimension to the story, though it remains subtle and mysterious. While it’s clear that there is something deeply significant about the relic and its power, Morjaria doesn’t rely too heavily on overt supernatural explanations. Instead, the curse serves as a shadow over the narrative, lending it a sense of foreboding and suggesting that the forces at play in the story are beyond mere mortal control.
Dan Brown fans, historical thriller lovers - this one's for you. 𝙃𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙡𝙮 𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙙 !

The most discreet and deadly intelligence service in the world, are monitoring Harveen's activities. Because she is about to discover a truth that will shake the foundations of Christian religion. They are going to bury the truth AGAIN.
The story is set in two timelines, AD 72 and present. Harveen and Jayesh, two different characters from different timelines yet feels so identical. This book is a perfect combination of suspense, mystery, history. I loved how brilliantly author portrayed the past and connects it with Rome, Egypt and Jerusalem. The book is written so perfectly that dispite being written in different timelines, it was very easy to read and get into.
Different timelines is the treasure of the book as it depicts the ancient historical scene and modern day methods. The book has short chapters which makes it more easier to read. The storyline, the characters, the mystery will make you keep turning pages. While reading it felt like I was there at the port of Muziris. There are thousands and thousands of books which are definitely worth it. You just have to find the right book.

What I loved most in this book was the vibrant portrayal of Kerala during the monsoon. Being a Keralite I was able to relate with many such things mentioned in this book. Its beauty and chaos beautifully mix the intensity of Dr. Harveen Gill’s quest. 𝙒𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 : Even though there are multiple povs, it was not at all confusing, in fact the way these three stories interwine with each other is something that made the story even more addictive. The plot itself is very interesting. Story unfolds three different personalities, at different time places, making it very intriguing and powerful. The short POVs made it highly engaging with short twists and questions at the end of each pov. Loved reading this book.
𝙁𝙖𝙫 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙧 : I loved reading about Jayesh and his story alot. I personally love reading about characters from their birth. It makes me feel a part of their journey. Jayesh was one of them. Watching him grow to please his parents to wanting betterment of his town, i loved everything about him. Don was also a character that intrigued me.
𝙇𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 : The book ends with a loud and clear message and the way it was narrated ? Nope didn't see that coming. Greed of any kind can be harmful. (If you read the book, you will understand exactly what i want to say) Jayesh wanted betterment of his town but he was ready to go to every extent even after the betterment of the people living there. His desire was insatiable and he faced its consequences.

The Curse of Muziris by @hamishmorjaria is both thrilling and intriguing, with the most daring protagonists in both the timelines of the story. One timeline, set in 2024, follows Dr Harveen Gill, a smart and adventurous archaeologist as she tries to figure out the reasons behind the mysterious fall of Muziris, an ancient port in India. Another, set in the first century A.D., follows Jayesh, the son of a pepper-trader, and his ambitions to transform his native place to the greatest empire that the world had ever seen. Both of the protagonists are fascinating characters, bold enough to resort to the most daring means to achieve their goals. I loved each of them so much.
I believe that best historical fictions are those which do not just provide us with mere escapism, but also arouse our interests to know more about any particular era in history. I do not know if this book can be categorised in historical fiction ( since one timeline is set in 2024), but I feel so interested in the history of South India after finishing the novel. ( which means please drop some book recommendations in the comment sections )
This book also gave major Da Vinci Code × The Mummy vibes, but in a very exciting way. That said, I think we need to stop labelling every thriller that explores the controversial history of Christianity as similar to Da Vinci Code, even though I loved that book a lot. Da Vinci Code was spectacular in its own way, but The Curse of Muziris has far more interesting set of characters. Also unlike, Da Vinci Code, this novel feels 'cinematic'.
When I was reading the 'Curse of Muziris ' it reminded me of one of my favorite author the legendary Dan Brown , by this reference you guys might have got the idea what this book is going to deliver to the readers.
The plot revolves around a mysterious artifact thought to be cursed. The author masterfully draws parallels between the artifact's origin and history, as well as current research and excavation, alternating between present and previous perspectives. When I was reading this book I felt like one of the character of the book and I can literally felt the places , adventures described in the book . I am someone who loves history so the historical references that author has given quite intrigued me and because of that I managed to read this book in just one go. Here Dr. Harveen Gill , an archeologist by profession sets out to find the last port of Muziris which followed her discoveries in Egypt , Rome , Jerusalem and India but someone was monitoring her actions , to know further read the book.
If you are someone who loves to read the blend of historical thriller with blend of suspense that this book is going to be of your interest.
I think I just found my new favorite historical fiction. Unlike a lot of books that feel dragged and oh-so factual, this book will make you feel none of that boredom!!
This book follows three parallel storylines, and the way they all eventually came together is my favorite part of it. It had the right amount of mystery to keep you hooked and the adequate amount of facts to keep you informed of everything going on. It's very well-written and well-executed. For a lot of times, it literally felt like real history instead of the fictionalized version of events.
if you are someone like me who struggles with longer chapters, this book even has that covered for us and I sooo thoroughly enjoyed it. if this interests you, then pick this book and you might just have your next 5-star read too!!
A truly captiviting read and a good start for this year's book list. A fast paced historical thriller making it mighty difficult to keep down. Set on the backdrop of lost port city of Muziris, the book traverses between the rich cultural and trading tapestry of ancient India. And surprises you with a unlikely connection to Vatican secrets. With that the novel does make archeology a very exciting profession! We all like a Da Vinci style story don't we?. Well this one does work in that genre and is quite enjoyable for its suspenseful narrative. Can imagine this becoming a movie/webseries soon!
