A sexy enemies-to-lovers, grumpy/grumpy romance from Amazon top 50 bestselling author Ava Hunter
Ash Keller prefers to keep her heart colder than the morgue. Having sworn off love after a disastrous breakup, she’s learned to thrive in her new career as a death doula. When her millionaire client, Augustus Fox, asks her to accompany him on an all-expenses paid trip to mend family ties and fulfill last wishes, she agrees.
There’s just one nail in her coffin.
Nathaniel Whitford—her client’s absurdly gorgeous, grumpy doctor of a grandson—is along for the trip. A man who has hated her guts since she crashed his wedding years ago. It’ll be a miracle if she survives this vacation without being tossed into a volcano.
Still, Ash refuses to let Nathaniel’s smug smirk and rippling pectorals take her focus away from her death doula-ing duties. She can survive two weeks in paradise with his offensively handsome face. But when falling coconuts and family drama threaten to derail the vacation, Ash and Nathaniel strike a deal: Bury their animosity and make the vacation perfect for Augustus.
Soon, a tentative bond—and mutual attraction—forms between the unlikely pair. With every tropical misadventure and steamy late-night hookup, Ash realizes there’s more to Nathaniel than his barbed banter and uptight façade. Suddenly love seems more complicated than death. And as the trip comes to an end, Ash must decide whether she’ll keep her heart six feet under or risk it all…for better or hearse.
Ava Hunter is an Amazon top 50 bestselling author. She writes romance with heart, humor, and heat.
Her bestselling books include Babymoon or Bust, an accidental pregnancy rom-com, and Tame the Heart, a grumpy/sunshine cowboy romance with Yellowstone-vibes.
When she’s not at her computer with a hot cup of coffee, you’ll either find her reading the latest true crime book or traveling with her family. Otherwise, she’ll be behind her desk, plotting out or typing up her next dreamy love story.
Ava Hunter has officially stolen my heart! I’m obsessed with her books, and this one was a total win. From the hilarious banter to the slow-burn romance, I couldn’t put it down if I tried.
Ash is a death doula, and she ends up on a family vacation with her client. But surprise! Her client’s grandson is Nathaniel, the guy whose wedding she was paid to ruin three years ago. Nathaniel’s immediate reaction is to demand she leave, but his grandpa insists she stays. Cue the most entertaining banter, the drama, and some serious sparks flying.
Nathaniel falling for Ash was everything. He tried so hard to hate her, but he couldn’t help looking out for her, even down to managing her diabetes. And when I say he was into her, I mean OBSESSED. He was soft only for her, which made me giggle like crazy. They’re total opposites (he’s broody, she’s chaotic) and somehow, they just work.
Ava Hunter’s FMCs are unmatched, and Ash might just be my favorite yet. Grab this book now and prepare to smile like a fool!

Ava Hunter, you did it again! This book is amazing 🥹❤️
I absolutely loved Ash. She reminds me so much of myself!!! She’s a Scorpio, loves wearing black, she’s moody, cries easily… SHE IS ME, AND I AM HER! I felt such a strong connection to her character.
I couldn’t put this book down and finished it in 2 daysss!!! ALSO, THE SLOW-BURN ROMANCE BETWEEN NATHANIEL AND ASH WAS EVERYTHING 😍😌
And the fact that Nathaniel cares for Ash, especially with her diabetes, even before their relationship deepened—he is amazing, I can’t!
There were so many funny moments, mostly from Ash’s thoughts, and I laughed out loud more than once. But there were also emotional scenes that brought me to tears, and I mean my Augustus—my man!!! Overall, this book was the perfect mix of fun and feelings!!
Thank you, Valentine PR, and of course, Ava Hunter, for this ARC 🖤 It truly means a lot to me!
This book was EVERYTHING!! I absolutely loved it. The characters main and side, the setting, the buildup, the background- it was all executed so well. I loved that I didn't have to read the first book and I still felt like I knew Tessie and her hubby (I do plan on reading their book too). Nathaniel Whitford has entered the chat yall!! This man was just YUMMY and GOEY underneath the grumpy exterior we were first presented with. He had SUCH a big heart but was protecting it from being hurt. And Ashabelle....oh Ashabelle. I absolutely loved her. She was SUCH her own person. She gave 0 f***s and I was here for it. The chemistry between these two was amazing. The way their relationship started and then faltered and restarted was chef's kiss. The way that Ash helped Nathaniel come out of his shell. The way she helped open up the whole Whitford/Fox clan. She was just a sight to behold. I really appreciated how Ava handled her anxiety and inner thoughts. She was just such a protector of her people. She made me laugh out loud and smile SO big with how she made Nathaniel and people notice her without intent.
Ash has found her calling. She is a death duola and really liking what she is doing. She is asked by her client to come on a family trip with him for two weeks to Hawaii. He wants her help with closing things up a little bit. Of course she agrees. What she does not expect, is Nathaniel Whitford to be there. The Nathaniel Whitford whose wedding she crashed three years ago. The one who she gave evidence of him cheating to his almost wife. The one who made her change her career afterwards because of how terrible she felt. Now they are stuck on an island together with his family who seems to have nothing in common. This will be great....not. Ash isn't going to let this deter her though. This trip is for Augustus. But then Nathaniel surprises her. She finds herself questioning what she originally thought about him. He has a good heart. He cares about the little things. He is HOT. Things start to slowly shift between them to where they are at a truce and then they are kissing. And all the while she is in awe of the way he is making her feel. No one has done some of the things he has done for her. He is making her feel special and wonderous. But nothing can last beyond this vacation right? Especially since she has sworn off love and all. But this feels too good to let go. Will she be able to put aside her fears and let him know how she feels before it's too late?
Nathaniel is on the trip from hell with his family. He has decided that he will do what he is here to do which is hang out with and enjoy his grandfather while he still can. What he does not expect is her. The woman who he thought ruined his life three years ago. When really she helped him realize how wrong he was leading it. She helped him let loose and become the man he is today. He isn't going to tell her that of course. He knows she is a con woman and doesn't trust her. But then he starts to see how amazing she is. She really is her own person and so so proud of it. He finds himself enamored with her. He can't stop thinking about her and her big black boots and how she doesn't plan for anything and her tiny yellow bikini and the way her lips taste and how he wants more. He finds himself agreeing to whatever he can get from her while they are on this vacation when in reality he knows she is it for him. He just has to find a way to get her to understand that before they leave in 10 days.
I cannot say enough how much I recommend this book! I had ALLLLL the feelings. I am hoping that Babymoon or Bust is just as good.
Favorite Quotes:
- A smile blooms across her red mouth. She laughs, the boisterous sound filling the air like fireworks. "I am truly an elephant at heart." It really f***ing works.
- Immediately, he's snared by the contradictions that are Ash Keller. Her girlish flushed cheeks alongside the sharp, dark cat eye. Her quirky love for cryptids balanced by her love for his grandfather. Now that he's unlocked a little bit of her, he wants more. A hell of a lot more.
- She kisses like a monster. Hungry and electric and savage.
- "You know," Ash muses. "Love and death are so similar. The beginning. The end. It's all a mystery. An unknown. Both are always on our minds. We don't control the ride, the ride controls us. And no matter how hard we prepare, no matter how much we think we've got this, we can't escape. Love. Or death....But finding the grace to get back to one another, to understand, to forgive, is another kind of love on it's own. It's not death."
- "Talking with Ash sometimes feels like trying the password to a vault. Unless you get it right, it'll stay locked up tight. But that doesn't mean he'll stop trying."
- "Handsome. He's so handsome. So calming. He is like the best soft sweater on a rainy day."
-"Grief and love coexist...You can't have one without the other. You have to take the good with the bad. And when you do, you'll find the bad doesn't matter as much as the good."
Thank you Ava for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review :) Can't wait to read whatever is next by you!
First things first - I really appreciate when a character has any sort of physical ailment or lifestyle beyond our usual. I also really love a good hate-hate meet (instead of the usual meet cute) -- and really is there anything worse than meeting someone by being professionally paid to break up their wedding?
When I was reading this - I IMMEDIATELY liked our heroine, Ash, because I just felt like she was a REAL person. Not a cookie-cutter baker or something that we normally get to read about?
I've read a few good romances recently with truly good characters and Hunter accomplishes that! The romance is also good - but the character-building really made this one for me!
**Thank you to Forever & NetGalley for the advanced reader copy. I received this book for free, but all thoughts are my own. – SLR 🖤
This is such a fun and unique romance and I was just so obsessed! The heroine is a death doula and has to go on vacation with her current client. Little does she know, her client is the grandfather of the man whose wedding she was paid to ruin a year ago. He sees her show up to Hawaii with his grandfather and immediately says she has to leave, but his grandfather is adamant that she stay. The banter between them on this family vacation was everything!! She has diabetes and, try as he might to hate her, he couldn't help but also make sure she was okay at every turn. They fall for each other SO HARD and I could not get enough of them together. There is a bit of a sad tone to this one since the grandfather is dying of cancer and know he won't be around soon, but the romance was angsty and perfect!!!! Definitely pick this one up!
I really enjoyed this one! There were some cheesy moments but still liked it.
I had some doubts tbh because of the H's grudge towards the h (she ruined his wedding 3 years ago), but it turns out he's a really great and caring MMC! I loved how he cared about the h and how he was so thoughtful and obsessed with her 🤭❤️. From the moment he met her again he was completely attracted to her and he couldn't help it.
“She’s the woman he’s going to marry. And not someday. Soon. How has he lived without her his entire fucking life?”
I’m everything for the MMC who has never treated anyone with kindness and deep care except his FMC 💕.
I liked the h too, she has a soft heart and loves taking care of others but forgets to take care of herself! We have a MMC who makes up for it and takes good care of her 🫠. Her cheating ex did a number on her and that's why she's finding it hard to give her heart to someone else and fall in love again, but the H fought for her and never let her go 🫶🏻. __________
Safety:
Safe for me
— h (33) / H (probably 35~37? I'm not sure but he's in his thirties) — 3rd person POV — The h has diabetes — Cancer (side character) — Loss of loved one (the present) — Dislike to love — He falls first and harder — Push from h but the H didn't really let her do that 💕 — No virgins (It's been a long time since they've been with anyone) — No owd/omd/cheating — No 3rd act break up — HEA
Note :
(This is a spoiler but this is for those who have doubts and curious about the H's feelings for his ex-fiancée)
* This book begins when the h ruined the H's wedding 3 years ago. * The H met his ex because of his father. * At some point (and before the h ruins his wedding) he realized how bad he and his ex were for each other and that their marriage might end like his parents' (unhappy marriage).
“When Camellia called off the wedding, it wasn’t relief that hit him. It was a sensation more like being put out of his misery.” ********** “We weren’t a good fit,” he says roughly. “I knew it. Went along with it. Mostly for my father. Politics of the business. I suppose some part of me did love her. But…after you interrupted the wedding…I was relieved. Like I could finally be myself. I don’t know if that makes sense, but that’s how I felt.” ********** “Camellia and I…we didn’t notice each other. We didn’t talk. Not in any real way.” ********** “Their couple’s spark was not sparking like it should be. They were like Barbie and Ken robots. Pretty packaging, but she wasn’t the one.”

I knew going into this book that I was going to like it because I have enjoyed all of Ava Hunter’s books, especially her Runaway Ranch series! That being said I was not prepared for how much I loved this book! Right from the beginning I was HOOKED.
Ash Keller used to be a professional wedding objector. As long as someone had proof as to why a couple shouldn’t get married, she would go and object to the marriage. A bad breakup completely wrecked her view on love. When she got a bad feeling after a particular job she quit and dived head first into being a Death Doula, someone that helps people in their final months to embrace their remaining time and get their affairs in order.
Currently she is helping Augustus Fox get his family together for one last family vacation in Hawaii before he no longer feels like himself. Ash is excited for the trip until she finds out Augustus’ grandson just so happens to be Nathaniel Whitford, the groom of the last wedding she objected at.
Sparks between Nathaniel and Ash IGNITE and they have to deal with being close to each other for two weeks.
Nathaniel and Ash were so freaking perfect together! This man tried to deny he was obsessed with her but once he gave in he was so committed to her. Ash is a type 1 diabetic and he never makes her feel less because of it. He supported her through the whole story. This is a bit of a slow burn but when the spice hit, it HIT.
Ash has always felt like she’s too much for the world and that she doesn’t fit anywhere, Nathaniel is there to love her just the way she is, his “𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒃𝒊𝒅 𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒍𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒂𝒖𝒕𝒚.” The concepts of life and death are discussed a lot and I loved how they were handled!
I absolutely loved the character growth that the Whitford family went through. I seriously started the book of hating them and then fell I love with them by the end!

Most of the time, I’d say I'm a fast reader, but it took me three days to get through this book. The story's not bad or anything, but the third-person POV keeps taking me out of the plot. I can think of a few books where this kind of narration really clicked for me, but sadly, this one just didn't do it. 🥲
Anyway, into the story, the MCs met three years ago when Ash (33) was paid by someone to stop Nathaniel's (36) wedding. Ash got some photos from her client showing Nathaniel as a cheater, and that's pretty much why she's got this job—to prevent any marriages that are just going to crash and burn. The client's identity was finally revealed at the 92% mark, confirming my suspicion that it was the ex-fiancee.
Currently, Ash is working as a death doula, providing assistance to Nathaniel's grandfather who is battling cancer. Her client invited her to join his family for a two-week vacation, and that's when she found out that Nathanel is actually her client's oldest grandson. 🫣
It was clear there was some bad blood between them, thanks to their past. But once his sister showed up in Hawaii, Ash realized she’d been played by her client. The woman in the photo wasn’t just some random person; she was actually Nathaniel’s sister.
This realization filled her with guilt, and she ended up apologizing for messing up his wedding. But he told her that the wedding wasn't meant to happen and that he actually felt relieved it didn't go through.
After that, they made a truce and began spending time together. Before I knew it, two weeks had passed and they had fallen in love with one another. Then they agree to keep seeing each other and not end their relationship that was just starting.
The story wasn't bad, as I said. I really did enjoy it. But the storytelling made it hard for me to immerse myself in the story. If it were written from the first person's POV, I would enjoy it even more. I'm sure of it.
I like that Nathaniel didn't let Ash push him away when her insecurities got the best of her. I appreciate his commitment to her and the reassurances he consistently provides. The patience, understanding, care, and love he has for her were just downright swoonworthy! 😍
As for Ash, I appreciate the thoughtfulness and care she has for others. I admire her overall goodness and how she always wants the best for everyone around her. I just hope she can see herself in a better light and stop thinking she’s not enough. Her insecurity is no joke, but I was happy that instead of keeping it all in, she finally decided to let Nathaniel in and was honest with him. 🤗
With that being said, overall, this was still an okay read. I like their banter, the pace, and how they eventually got into the relationship. 💖
Book info: - Third person POV - Strangers to lovers - Side char dealing with cancer - Dealing with loss and grief - Mention of cheating (h's ex) - Dislike to love - Forced proximity - Grumpy x Sunshine - No cheating, OM/OW, separation - No V - HEA (1 yr later, married)
Note: - He was mostly with his ex to keep his parents happy since they had a lot in common. He said that he thought a part of him loved her; I mean, they were together for years, so I guess it's not totally out of the question to feel some love for her. But he made it clear that what he feels for Ash is something way deeper and more all-encompassing.

SO CUTE SO SWEET!! Finished in less than 24 hours bc I just couldn’t stop. Ash & Nathaniel were so stinking cute and I loved their story so much. Ash was so different than your typical romance fmc and I LOVED THAT. she was such a fierce bad ass with a soft interior and I loved her. And Nathaniel!!! A man down bad!!!! I loved him so much. A black cat on the outside but a golden retriever on the inside 💘 this had so much potential to be a 5 star but the burn just wasn’t slow enough for me!!!!! I wish there had been even more build up and tension bc their bickering and bantering at the beginning of the book was low key my favorite part. The timeline was also a little quick for me but whatever they were so cute. Also!!! He kept going on about how “mean” and “feral” and “morbid” Ash was but she really wasn’t?! I would’ve loved to see her a little meaner tbh 🤭 Such a sweet story of finding love & acceptance where you least expect it 💘💘💘
grumpy x grumpy ⚰️ he falls first and HARD 🖤 enemies to lovers ⚰️ vacation fling 🖤 death doula x doctor ⚰️ no third act
I KNEW this was gonna be but it had no business being this good. Ava put something magical in this story between Nate and Ash. Their hilarious not so meet cute to being trapped on a Hawaiian island with a family that is so distant is not what Ash pictured when she joins her client on a family vacation one last time. The last thing Ash could imagine was Augustus grandson, Nathaniel who she may or may not have ruined his life. Their hilarious banter and morbid jokes had me absolutely cackling and loving the way Ash shows herself to others. She’s so unapologetically herself and I love that Nathaniel can’t even help but to soften where Ash is concerned even when he doesn’t want to.
This book was so funny to the core with the most tender moments and a bit of angst added in there. I love the will they won’t they tension. When she stands up for him and he saves her life (a couple times). So so good there’s so many wonderful things I can say about this but it’s truly an experience.
While this ties into the Babymoon and Busy world it can be read as a standalone but that book is also a must read and getting to see small snippets of them made my heart so happy.
Adding Nathaniel to my list of book boyfriends 🥹 what an absolute ANGEL of a man!!! But if i had to hear how “feral” he thought Ash was again i will throw a fit 😭 although this was such a cute read i found a lot of the descriptors of the characters VERY redundant and that honestly annoyed the every loving shit out of me. And why couldn’t Ash tie her shoes herself???? Idk
I would’ve given this a higher rating if it wasn’t so similar to Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.
Family vacation in Hawaii? Check. Terminally ill family member? Check. FMC is the outsider among the guests? Check. FMC has a medical condition? Check. MMC is the oldest sibling and a doctor? Check. MMC dislikes FMC due to a misunderstood previous encounter? Check. Virginal white dress dilemma? Check. This is so specific to DDBS, I gasped when it came up. FMC gets stranded without her medication? Check. MMC in a dangerous situation and no one can get to him? Check.
I fully understand that some general ideas and concepts will always be repeated throughout the romance genre, that’s not what this is. Let’s maybe not recreate someone else’s book with new characters? Just a thought.
Anywho, enemies to lovers is tricky imo bc it can be very repetitive. There’s not a lot you can do with two characters who dislike each other except make them bicker, and I’ve never been convinced that bickering and “will they/won’t they” is enough to carry a whole ass plot.
For me, this was already feeling repetitive by 30% and I was bored by 45%. The premise is interesting and started off pretty cute, but the writing is just alright (third person POV is a hit or mess for me) and the lack of originality made it fall flat.
The timeline is also off in the beginning. Nathaniel confirms he didn’t quit working at the hospital until after he and Camellia broke up, but Delaney tells Ash the photo was taken while Nathaniel was on “leave from the rig.” This doesn’t make sense since we know the photo was taken before the wedding, and Nathaniel didn’t begin working on the rig until after the break up.
Chapter 6 ◍ He took a job in the ER, allowing him to put his father off for years, but after the breakup with Camellia, he finally said fuck it. He resigned his position at the prestigious hospital, gave up his loft and Mercedes, and went to live as a doctor on a floating oil rig off the coast of California.
Chapter 13 ◍ Delaney taps the screen. “I remember this day. This was on set. We filmed at Go Go Girls.” She knows the place. Ash drives by the legendary LA strip club at least once a month on her way to the cemetery. Delaney frowns, her brows bunched. “Nathaniel was in town. He had just gotten leave from the rig.”
PS: I think this has been oversold as grumpy/grumpy. Nathaniel goes out of his way to be kind to Ash by like day three of the trip. He’s not actually grumpy at all, he just doesn’t like her because of what she did at his wedding. And Ash, yes, she’s a little bit snippy with the family at specific times, but otherwise, she’s really sweet to everyone around her. I don’t really get the “black cat” situation, maybe I don’t understand what that is. All I got from Ash was oh, I’m so edgy bc I like true crime and talking about death, but I’m also misunderstood, and messy, and no one gets me bc I have diabetes. That’s it. That’s her entire personality. Oh, she also wears a lot of black and never ties her shoe laces. Idk what part of that was supposed to classify her as grumpy or “black cat,” but it just didn’t really resonate with me.
ava hunter's ability to deliver an entertaining, delightful romance with each release is beyond impressive. and for better or hearse is no different. with a grumpy x grumpy dynamic at the forefront, a delicate balance is struck, examining the link between love and grief.
after meeting in a less than savory, unconventional manner, ash and nathaniel are back in each other's orbit during an important family trip for the whitford family. a death doula and a doctor using his training in an unusual setting? they make quite the pair. though there are less than fond feelings between the two at the start, thanks to adventures in hawaii and chemistry they can't deny, the tide begins to turn, absolutely pun intended. with one another, they find a kindred soul, someone who has always felt other, someone who has struggled to feel accepted. eventually, quippy, flirty banter gave way to a true, deep connection.
in particular, nathaniel was a real man of conviction. once he knew who and what he wanted, convincing ash that they should give it a real go became his main mission. when she doubted them or herself even, nathaniel was there, ready with the stability she needed.
the link between love and grief that I previously mentioned was especially prevalent with a side character, one who offered lots and wisdom and clarity to those who loved him and all of his complexities. additionally, all of the tessie, solomon, baby bear cameos as ash's cousin served as her most trusted confidante while navigating falling in love with the most unexpected person. as a fan of babymoon or bust it was sweet to see the family they formed continue to grow and flourish.
at this point, I trust ava so completely. if she writes it, I will read it.
thanks to ava hunter and valentine pr for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
For Better or Hearse is an enemies to lovers, grumpy x grumpy romance, with MCs in their 30s, she gives black cat energy, opposites attract, “I hate everyone but you”, and has type 1 diabetes rep.
Ash is a death doula and her current millionaire client (Augustus) has hired her to join him on a family vacation to Hawaii. When they arrive she finds out he’s the grandfather of Nathaniel, a man whose wedding she was paid to ruin a few years ago and definitely has some feelings about her… Ash has always had a unique odd job here and there, but has really found her stride with being a death doula. Basically she works for Augustus as a sort of hired companion, she both plays chess with him and accompanies him to chemo appointments. Her job is to make the transition from living to death easier on her clients and their families. She ends up on his “one last family vacay” to Hawaii and that’s where most of the book takes place.
I liked parts of this book but I didn’t love it. I had major issues with the pacing of it and just felt like it was too long and too repetitive with the same convos/conflicts happening. I’ve been very hit and miss with this author though, Sing You Home I did not like, while Rope the Moon I really liked.
This was the most perfect vacation book ever. I read this all day in a beachfront cabana in Puerto Rico and the vibes were absolutely fucking vibing.
The FMC is a death dula who was hired by the MMC’s grandfather. The grandfather is dying of cancer and he’s planned this epic, two week Hawaiian vacation for his family to spend quality time with them. As a death dula, Ash is there for whatever her clients need when they need support the most.
She’s a black cat personality, wears all black, red lipstick, she’s covered in tattoos, and loves macabre shit. I LOVE HER.
It felt so nice to read about an FMC like me. Us morbid, macabre girls are pretty much never represented in romance books, especially the rom coms. It was like chicken soup for my soul. Plus, I love it when an FMC is more memorable and interesting than the MMC! That doesn’t typically happen.
But the MMC is a hot doctor who becomes completely obsessed with her, protects her and takes care of her 24/7, and calls her “Bigfoot” as a term of endearment.
I loved every second of this.
The other thing that I loved about this book was that the FMC is diabetic and the representation was spectacular, in my opinion.
I love it when different types of people are represented in books, but when it’s done WELL. Not forced by the author in an unnatural, try hard, I-want-people-to-praise-me-for-this-on-social-media kind of way. This was just done well and felt very natural throughout the story.
My only criticism is that I think this book should have been written in first person. It felt like a third person book that realllllly wanted to be written in first person. If you read it, you’ll probably notice that too.
Anyways, MORE BOOKS LIKE THIS PLEASE!!
More macabre, creepy, death-loving, heavily tattooed, all black wearing FMCs please! I’m foaming at the mouth for it!! 🤪
P.S. This book is not sad. Just wanted to note that in case you read the word “cancer” earlier and got turned off. It’s brought up from time to time, but the general vibe is this book is fluffy, cute, romantic, and tropical.
For better or Hearse is a great summer to fall read. Ash is a death doula who loves all things morbid and macabre. Nathaniel is the man whose wedding she stopped 5 years prior. What could go wrong when they're stuff in Hawaii for his grandpops last vacation?
Let me tell Ash is absolutely amazing. I loved her take no prisoners attitude and the way she cared so much for Augustus. She was the glue the family didn't know they needed. I like how she didn't let her diagnosis stop her from doing anything. Nathaniel is grumpy and trying to runaway in life. You can tell he cares and has that gooey center. I think the character growth was really great.
As someone who's lost their grandparent to cancer this book will hold a special place in my heart. Thank you @authoravahunter for the gifted copy.

Oh this book was a lovely surprise, I didn't think I would like it as much as I did, but Ava did an excellent job with it.
Ash and Nathaniel met in the worst possible way and they met again after a while, all because Ash is a death doula (these are the non-medical people who accompany and advise the sick and their families when there is no turning back) she is hired by Nathaniel's grandfather and he (the grandfather) takes her on a family vacation, do you see where this is going? Well, the story is good, I couldn't stop laughing and crying at some scenes, I loved Ash's personality because I identified with her, but also with Nathaniel, the two of them make such a cute couple that this grumpy couple just made me smile. The side characters were such an integral part of the story that I just wanted to know more about them, no doubt Ash found everything she wanted and more in Nathaniel.
The drama left me screaming, and that was almost at the end, but I still loved it. Without a doubt, this book, as I said, surprised me in a very good way.
📌 I received an e-arc, and this is my honest opinion/review of it.
The author is becoming one of my favorite authors when I want a romance with a ton of depth and emotion and truly well developed characters that I feel like I really know by the time I finish. There was something really beautiful about the plot of this one and that may sound weird since it’s about death and Ash’s career as a death doula but this showed how yes, there is so much pain in death but there can also be beauty and tenderness too. Speaking of tender, the way Nathaniel is so soft and gentle with Ash even though her vibes give off tough girl was everything. They have such a slow burn but their banter and chemistry to get there made it worth the wait. I loved Nathaniel but I was obsessed with Ash, there was something about her that got under my skin in a good way. She tries so hard to be tough and unbothered but inside she is soft and gooey with a heart of gold. The tropical setting was beautiful, Ash’s relationships with both Augustus and Tessie were amazing and the romance was mature, authentic and so entertaining!
ummm i was expecting to love this book because it’s ava hunter BUT i was not expecting to be obsessed over it 😭😩
if you listen to me for any book recommendations, please just read this one this spooky szn!! I can’t even fathom or describe how this book crept up on me and snatched my heart

Rating: 5 ⭐️
I knew I was going to love this book, but it honestly shocked me how much I fell in love with these characters.
Ash Keller is a wedding objector turned death doula who is a secret softy but will absolutely cut you. When I tell you this woman is a badass, I mean it. I aspire to be her.
Nathaniel Whitford seems like your classic spoiled rich playboy but then man, oh man, is he so grumpy yet so incredibly sweet toward his grandfather and (in the beginning) secretly sweet toward Ash 🥹
Between the nicknames of Big Foot, Tall Handsome Asshole, and Morbid little beauty, I thought I might pass away. They were so playful and fun and heartbreaking and everything inbetween.
I cannot recommend this book enough. If you read anything during these “ber” months, please, i’m begging, read this one!!! 🖤🫡
Tropes:
☠️Death Doula x Oil Rig Doctor ☠️Forced Proximity ☠️Black Cat FMC x Secret Golden Retriever MMC ☠️Grumpy x Grumpy ☠️Enemies to Lovers ☠️Vacation Romance ☠️Boy Obsessed ☠️Diabetes 1 Rep
I didn’t realize how much I LOVE the grumpy x grumpy trope until this book?!?! Like I am actually obsessed?!
I was ecstatic to read this book, although I didn’t read the book prior because I can NOT do the pregnancy trope 🥲, and I absolutely adored it. The Hawaii setting?! Magical. The snarkiness?! Hilarious. The romance?! To absolute DIE FOR!! A must read if you ask me🤭
This is a sequel to Babymoon or Bust. And it's so good. Like amazingly good. Not that I was amazed it was going to be good! I've read a few Ava Hunter books, and each one is just so entertaining.
Ash is our black cat protagonist. She wears the hell out of black, and she doesn't believe in a happily ever after. After a big betrayal, she's not looking for love. She's found a career that's making her so happy after years of bouncing around different jobs. As a death doula, she's found her calling.
Her millionaire client Gus asks her to go to Hawaii with his family. And it would be a good trip with a client she gets along with so much. Except for one of his grandsons is a man she's met before. When she crashed his wedding a few years ago. He's never forgotten the woman who changed his entire life.
Ya'll these two 😍. I didn't think there would be a chance for them. I mean, they have a pretty big event in between the two of them. It's not a sweet romantic time... at first. They are on two opposite sides that looks like it won't be breached.
But even though Ash is prickly, Nathaniel is a great guy. And he warms up to her. And us. He's a doctor, and whew he does some sweet things that show, even though Ash is the last person he wants to help, the good guy just shines through.
Theres some life circumstances that are sprinkled in the book. Ash has suffered some big losses and it paints her whole life. And Nathaniel's family... they are some goobs definitely!
There's romance, Hawaii, and some pretty funny lines here. The people who start the book aren't the ones who finish the book.
